492nd G-View: Gushing Over Magical Girls

Let us get right to the point. This anime fulfilled a long dormant desire that was not fulfilled since the likes of Valkyrie Drive Mermaid, sin – Nanatsu no Taizai or even Kandagawa Jet Girls became less common over time. An eagerness to see animated stories about girls craving each other sexually with fewer restraints than usual. This scratched that itch but was it more than long overdue naughty Yuri goodness? Let us find out as we take a look at Gushing Over Magical Girls.

WARNING! This show features content not suitable for viewers under the age of 18 or, to put it bluntly, strong morals or dislike of ecchi media. Viewer discretion is advised.

Plot Summary: Utena Hiiragi is a very shy girl but also hardcore fangirl of the magical girl group Tres Magia. One day a mysterious creature notices this strong admiration and offers her the chance to become just like her heroines…The catch is she had become a supervillain against her will. Not only that but her new form and powers slowly awaken something inside Utena she did not know she had…or perhaps did all along.

Gushing is simply put a story about a “Bocchi” who gets superpowers and through them awakens a naughty side that was subconsciously there but nurtured through the power of “eeeeeeviiiiillll”, aka perversion. As her powers grow and becomes naughtier, so too do her “misdeeds” against the heroines but the fascinating thing is despite most of her actions being morally questionable…there is almost never any malicious intent in what our dear anti-heroine does. It is a combination of the reason why she loves magical girls so much and the opportunity to enact her fetishes.

Most of them revolving around bondage. This too has its origin believe it or not. I remember a webcomic called Sunstone that also revolved around BDSM. The thing is, I personally do not get “it” myself and while the comic was good I lost interest over time for several reasons. Not so with Gushing. I still do not understand the appeal of “it” personally but I could at least see why some characters on the show found an inexplicable pleasure at the hands of The Bocchinatrix‘ “torture”. That, and MOST of the scenes were very sexy and exhilarating. I will give credit to Sunstone for helping me understand the more dramatic scenes related to BDSM along with the methods, rules and most importantly difference in intensity. There is a method to Utena’s madness and its reception. It is important to remember them as the story progresses.

Another important thing worth remembering while watching is that behind the naughtiness, behind the epic battles between good and “evil”, behind the backstage scheming and shonen anime/mahou shoujo tropes are young ladies who want to enjoy their lives with people they care about. The chill scenes of the girls hanging out and doing chill stuff are very sweet and a very nice reminder of what I just mentioned. Cute and sexy weirdos on both sides having fun and either helping others or wreaking havoc (intentional or otherwise). Gotta give props to the classic secret identity trope in superhero media. I know how it works by now but I cannot help but chuckle at the fact Tres Magia and Enormita are bitter rival groups yet slowly become homies just because an invisible magic conceal their true identities post-transformation despite them not looking all that different transformed. Thank you Superman. This is also another good use of the “protagonist makes allies better by association” trope.

Back to the mahou shoujo stuff. The battles range from fun to legit badass. Sometimes we forget this is a comedy and get a quick reminder during the fight. While the main draw is what happens after most battles they too are worth watching.

The presentation excels where viewers expect it to. High quality sexiness aplenty. Naturally the show is best enjoyed uncensored (specifically as uncensored as the show could get without getting an NC-17 rating. That will be saved for the Blu-Ray. The soundtrack is a pretty good mix of cool, cute and sensual. Nice OP and ED too. Be sure to pay close attention to the ED in the latter parts of the show.

Time to discuss the main sextet of lovable naughty weirdos starting with the main mahou shoujo team of Tres Magia.

Magia Magenta is the lovable yet naive leader of the team. She enjoys being a role model, especially to children and will do her best to fight the good fight no matter how demeaning the cricumstances.

Magia Sulfur is essentially the “Buttercup” (Powerpuff Girls) of the group. She has a Southern Japanese accent though the HiDive subs went overboard with her trash talk. Despite her no-nonsense attitude she is nowhere near as crass as the subs make her out to be.

Magia Azure is the elegant beauty of the team. Mature, elegant, graceful and an honorable miko. She is also the best character on the show with the best body, best moments, has arguably best arc of the season and was so powerful that only one single solitary thing could outshine her. Readers know it had to be something extremely strong to break her best girl streak.

Admittedly Pink and Yellow do not get as much development as their perfect comrade but they for sure have their moments.

Next up are our anti-heroines who have less reason to hold back their naughtiness, Enormita.

I already talked a lot about Utena and what made her such an awesome and compelling protagonist. Simply put she speaks for the cultured people out there who understand and embrace the truth of anime naughtiness. It is a truth few understand. It is a truth even people in their 50s and beyond have yet to comprehend. There already exists a Utena out there who changed the game forever. This Utena did that for me in 2024.

Korisu is both the “daughter” of the group and the wild card. She is a precious cinnamon muffin who can speak but only when necessary choosing instead to show how she feels. The more she trusts someone the easier she is to understand. That being said there is a reason Utena described her as the most dangerous in her debut performance.

Kiwi is arguably THE star of the show. Although Utena is the game changer Kiwi is an inspiration to us all. Someone who motivates all to follow their dreams and reach for greater heights. When you truly want something and are capable of achieving your goals, be like Kiwi and go for gold. That is all I will say about that. Apart from that she is a gyaru with a sharp tongue but if she likes you is the sweetest peach on the planet.

There are other important characters introduced in the latter half of the show but it is best for viewers to see for themselves. Totally worth it.

All I will say about the Yuri is it must be seen to be believed. Even mentioning anything would lessen its power. It exceeded my expectations. Let me put it that way.

Overall Gushing Over Magical Girls exceeded my expectations. I heard the rumblings of how naughty the series was but like my spiritual sister said week after week “I thought I was ready…I was not ready”. That best describes my reactions to most episodes. This show changed me basically. The presentation is at its best where expected. The action scenes are both cool and naughty. The cast of characters are delightful, especially as viewers come to learn more about them, even two particular meanies. I have my own Utena to admire, Kiwi is an inspiration and Blue is perfection. The BDSM and other naughty scenes were quite the spectacle. The Yuri exceeded expectations. Yes, some fetishes were not to my tastes but even the episodes featuring them had their highlights so they were not busts, far from it. As mentioned in the above warning this show is mainly recommended to viewers who embrace quality ecchi Yuri goodness. Not for everyone but if you can take it, I say go for it.

Add this to the ever growing pile of “Needs Season 2” Yuri anime.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. This show truly surprised me and I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. I like it when I get so into a show that waiting a week for the next ep feels like eternity, that’s what this show did for me. Not a lot of shows do that for me, but this one did.

Hard to pick a favourite out of this lineup, but Azure/Sayo and Kiwi are top characters for sure, both had a lot to love about them. And of course you can’t not love Utena. Like you said, she’s a heroine for the cultured and she lived up to that week after week. It’ll be hard to top her another show to top her performance, I don’t think anything on my immediate watch list will feature a character quite like her.

All in all just a really great fun, sexy, dramatic at times, and silly show that I had a blast watching for the past few months. I think I really needed a show like this to help me get back into enjoying anime once again and maybe just break that slump I’ve fallen into. Thank you, Utena and company.

It exceeded expectations, sir. Ours at least.

Kiwi and Blue reigned supreme no doubt.

Utena is the cultured champion. Bless her wickedly kind heart.

Hopefully thanks to this show we will be seeing you around these parts more often my friend.

I really liked the anime but there where somethings they did that if someone read the manga might disappoint them. When they find out it was just something the anime added and it’s not really in the manga. Like some relationships the anime try to make deeper then they actually are.

  3. I’ve said it a few times, but to sum it up again, this was such a pleasant surprise. Shows like this can be hit or miss for me depending on how they handle the subject matter. This show absolutely hit it out of the park. I really looked forward to it every week.

Azure was the best girl through to the end, and her character arc throughout the show was fantastic.

But Utena really shined when she was in her element, and I absolutely loved every moment. Kiwi is also super fantastic.

So many wonderful moments came out of this show, as we’ve already discussed, and it truly does deserve an S2.

Definitely my anime of the season, and probably year. I wish all yuri anime had this level of fanservice. It certainly separates the real anime fans from the tourists.

    Kiwi ❤

it was a fun show, surprising the level of ecchiservice it had

First half was fun, but basically just fetish fuel. Still fun, but it really felt like the show was lacking something special to stand out. Then the second half everything really started moving! Got a great deal better from there on out

Would very much look forward to another season! Need more of Baiser and her pseudo family organization!

What a long, strange trip this series has been. We follow our timid protagonist, Utena. A shrinking violet of a girl, with a thing for magical girls. We got a look into her closet in ep. 4 and you gotta respect her figure game.

I loved seeing Utena grow in confidence and technique with her BDSM skills. THe first episode, she was pretty crass and unrefined. When she started to learn what got each member of Tres Magia tuned up, she refined her techniques. For Magenta, it’s Humiliation. For Sulfur, i’s aggression. For Azure, it’s Domination, and Binding.

One thing people either don’t know, or forget about BDSM, is it’s all about trust. If you’re a Sub, you trust your partner to know where your limits are, to know when to stop, or when to push you a little more. Azure figured it out ( and it was glorious).

Blindfolding can be a serious turn-on. You are completely at your partner’s mercy. To not know where the next stimulation will come from, the anticipation can be effective all on its own. Before I get into a lecture about the intricacies of nipple clamps, lets just say, I liked how the characters grew to embrace their kinks.

I also love how each of the characters is loving and supportive of their teammates. Just watching how Utena freaking adopts Korisu is just the best thing ever.

It’s the perfect mix of raunchy and wholesome.

As mentioned I’m not personally into bondage but the aforementioned comic showed me enough to understand its appeal to those who do. Plus the BDSM was much more enjoyable in this show.

Yup. Utena and Kiwi are the parents, Korisu the baby, Loco the big sister and Leber the future daughter in-law.

      A cultured balance indeed.

It’s definitely a present surprise as the anime adaptation went a bit further than what I expected without censorship. That said, some of the kinks are a bit well, weird, but it’s interesting to see how Utena developed. Also, the Yuri didn’t disappoint here.

Well, I’m not going to share my full thoughts as they are in my blog post that you can read, but I’m for sure that this will get a second season sometime in the future, given how well received it is.

It’s even more fun as a Precure parody. They make that clear from the very first frame- a blue sky with clouds and pentagon sun flares- quoting the first frames of the first (Futari wa Precure) and 20th (Hirogaru Sky Precure) seasons, and continues with a lot more specific references.

Yes the show exceed my expectation by a thousand times. I was ready for a little ecchi show but no, this is an education show. The ecchi scenes were so details and just when you think they done, they keep on going, I was blown away. They made me say the same thing every week that’s how good this show was.

I love this show so much. I love Azure, she’s so beautiful and hot. You know I have a thing for big boobas. And I respect Kiwi, she’s our inspiration, please give her happiness with Utena. And thank you Utena, I learned a lot from you. Korisu is a bundle of cuteness. And for a certain couple, keep on doing it. You guys belong together. Still sad this show’s ended. I won’t lose hope for second season.

Absolutely. We learned quite a bit about the intricacies of BDSM in a “show, don’t tell” kind of way. Very nice.
Oh yes indeed. Time and again the show surprised us in the best way possible.

      Azure is love.
Utena is on her way to becoming a legend.
Kiwi taught us a lot about being better people.
      Korisu is a joy.
Bless “those two” so very much.

      Fingers crossed as always.

A stellar review for a very stellar series. I dare say, it wouldn’t have done so well if it was sanitized in any way, shape or form. I hope a 2nd season is greenlit.

It was quite a blast watching Utena’s development into an unwilling, yet awesome, villainess. She may not have signed for this willingly but if it’s to help her precious Tres Magia attain new heights, she’ll be the greatest villain they ever faced!

Utena and Sayo/Azure were the best girls in my book. Just like Utena, Sayo’s development throughout the show was a sight to behold. Aside from Kiwi’s never-ending quest to take Utena to a hotel(heh) and Loco/Leber, I liked how the rival teams interacted with each other when they weren’t on the job; Haruka with Korisu, Kiwi with Kaoruko and Utena with Sayo.

This one did well from what I gathered. Better than most Yuri so SURELY it has a chance for a 2nd season. Pretty please?

Utena is a legend in the making I tell you!

      Blue is perfection.

      Kiwi is love.

Loco X Leber are magnificent. Hopefully they’re a sign of the Winter season being the spiciest of the Year for Yuri from now on.

surprisingly really good too. I really liked the characters, watching them all interact and play off each other. Such a banger start to year 2024!

    Also Sulfur still best girl
