Yuri Quickie: WATATEN! Precious Friends

Since I dubbed Summer 2023 the “backlog season” due to there hardly being any anime that caught my interest at the time I figured it was the perfect time to finally work on my ever growing backlog. Let us begin with a movie to a most delightful series. This is Wataten! Precious Friends.

Check out my review of the anime HERE.

Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! Precious Friends

Full title: Watashi ni Tenshi ga Miorita! Precious Friends

Length: 66 minutes

Plot summary: Our heroines agree to go on a “practice field trip” after Hana told the gang about her cool grandma. Of course Mya-Nee is dragged along for the ride.

Hana takes photos of the girlsAs far as the plot goes there is not much to delve deep into. The movie is one of those “longer episodes” type of fares where the appeal is watching the gang on the big screen or in our case, HD Blu-Ray goodness. Everyone is as adorable and wonderful as fans remember.

  • Hinata being the genki Mya-Nee loving siscon. It is innocent of course.
  • Noa is the poster girl for “kawaii”, according to her.
  • Hana the soft spoken kid with a sweet tooth and love for an odd mascot.
  • Last but certainly not least the fantastic titular angel/tenshi main protagonist Koyori determined to be a great leader and Kanon always by her side to make sure she does well.

Hana's grandmaThe aforementioned grandma lives up to the hype and is indeed cool. Her story is lovely and as viewers can see is still a cougar. “She’s still got it” yo. Speaking of sexy older women the three mamas pop up every now and then and because this is a kind of vacation movie people of culture are indeed blessed. Not as much as we would like but for a fluffy show what we got was nice.

My one nitpick is our true heroine was relegated to the game she made famous in the anime, meaning not enough screen time to cherish her greatness but make no mistake, she remains an inspiration to CULTURED people everywhere.

Noa fantasizes about Hinata againKoyori and Kanon sleeping togetherThe yuri remains as precious as ever between our main couple of Koyori X Kanon and the cute side-couple of Noa X Hinata. Our leads are set for life as they constantly filled my heart with bliss making me crave those “rushed” timeskip finales showing them enjoying a married life somewhere in Switzerland. Meanwhile Noa’s quest to become the second most important girl in Hinata’s life continued. Ganbare Noa! You will succeed one day. Lastly Mya-Nee X Hana is there for peeps who like the “Wait until she’s old enough” relationship. Fans of mine who I am actually rooting for there.

That is the gist of it. A must watch for Wataten fans and Girls’ Club aficionados, especially those with a cuteness level of infinity.

    It was absolutely wonderful~
Just more of the same stuff that made the original such a joy to watch.
I actually caught her when she first showed up, and I think I actually caught every appearance of her. I wasn’t the best at spotting her in the original, so I was surprised. Guess my observation skills leveled up since then.
HinaNoa will always bring such a smile to my face ❤ Those two have got quite a future ahead of them!

There are a lot of Noa and Hinata moments with a few Kayori and Kanon moments as well, which I am really happy about, but still a fun and cute movie. Also, it’s interesting that Sakura’s (Hana’s grandmother) and Machi’s relationship seems very familia.. At least we learn where that hair clip came from and the origins as well. But aside from that, the comedy and cuteness is about the same stuff from the original series.

Sadly, Kouko got the short end of the stick, but at least she got a little screen time in the beginning and after the credits.

Koyori X Kanon didn’t need many moments to convey their eternal love.

Hopefully one day Noa’s dream comes true.

      Justice for Kouko!

she got more screentime than that. Much like the original show, she was in it a lot more than a first glance offers. The after credits scene was just the way of letting those who missed her realize this fact (I was terrible at spotting her in the first season, but somehow was really good at it during this movie???)
