Aquatope of White Sand Episode 2: Working at the Aquarium

When we last left our heroines Fuuka begged Kukuru for a job at the aquarium. Did she get it?

Grandpa gives Fuuka a job and a place to stay

Kukuru told Fuuka she’d ask her grandpa, the actual director of the aquarium, about her request. Grandpa not only gave her a job but allowed her to lodge with them. Kukuru’s grandparents are easygoing folks, you see. Meanwhile Fuuka tried to ditch calls from her mom till she couldn’t anymore. Kukuru was called by Karin to discuss something important at Udon’s family bar.

Udon's mom drinking with the guysUdon used to her mom's shenanigans

We got hints about something Kukuru with a hefty debt, More on that later. We also learned the beautiful fortuneteller from last time was Udon’s mom. Must be a side-job during the day because she’s a single mom who had to work double duty. That or she wanted extra cash on the side. Oh and yes, Udon inherited her mom’s sexiness.

Fuuka struggling feeding the penguinsWe’re skipping ahead a bit because the bigger developments of the episode happened when Fuuka started her new job. Her first assignment was feeding penguins as a show for visitors. It was a popular attraction. Unfortunately for her the penguins weren’t very cooperative, biting and pecking her several times.

Fuuka sulking in the bathtubKukuru was harsh on Fuuka who felt terrible for her failure. Fortunately it didn’t take long for her to find out why. The next day while washing the entrance some douchebags wanted to talk to the director. As Kukuru attended to them Karin paid a visit. Fuuka told her she might be fired soon. Karin told her the reason Kukuru was so serious and strict was because the aquarium was in danger of closing down. She wanted to do everything she could to raise enough money by the end of the Summer to save it. This further fueled Fuuka’s resolve to work harder.

Fuuka drives away the douchesBack to Kukuru. The douches wanted to make a deal with her, offering to lend her money to help keep the aquarium afloat but she’s like “I don’t need your help.”, smelling their shadiness a mile away. They did very little to hide their wicked intentions. Fuuka and Karin quietly saw them leave until they bumped into the cute aquarium welcome sign and broke it. Fuuka got so pissed she chased them away. Kukuru was happy she did.

Fuuka and Kukuru have a momentAfter introducing Fuuka to everyone else at Udon’s bar and announcing plans to throw a welcome party for her our heroines went on an evening stroll. Now that she knew what Kukuru was fighting for she told her the truth about her situation. How she ran away to Okinawa after failing to become an idol. Why she gave up the Center spot to Ruka and the mixed responses she got from others after quitting. She knew how much Kukuru loved the aquarium and was like “My dream may be gone but I want to do all I can to help make yours come true”. At first she was fine with staying anywhere in Okinawa but now she knew it had to be at the aquarium with Kukuru. Kukuru gladly accepted her help.

Another good episode.

Kuuya and KaiPS: I didn’t mention the male employee at the aquarium, Kuuya, because there wasn’t much to say. He had a “What a pain” attitude most of the time. Then we may have got some hints about something this episode. When Kukuru introduced Fuuka to him he got a little defensive. Turns out he wasn’t good around girls. After Fuuka chased the douches away Karin convinced him along to Udon’s bar. He asked Kai to come with him. When it comes to the “uncomfortable around the opposite sex” trope that doesn’t automatically mean the character is gay. However, the “open book while drunk” trope is usually more reliable. In this case Kuuya, while drunk, said he’s glad Kai came along because it’s better to drink with hot guys around. Then when Kai offered to help Kukuru at the aquarium when she said she needed guys to help with heavy lifting Kuuya was like “You’re doing it for me, right Kai!?”. Now this isn’t confirmation but the drunk trope is rarely wrong in fiction so…

Those penguins are really vicious. I wonder why Fuuka didn’t drop the fish so she wouldn’t get pecked so violently. Thankfully, it’s good that she her come clean about her failed dreams in the end. Wonder how their relationship will develop from here.

This show is so gorgeous. It also reminds me of Umi Monogatari. Perhaps it’s the sea theme and the somewhat melancholic undertone. I hope Aquatope takes a different direction from that one.

If Kuuya is not gay, then I’ll be very surprised. He even wears a hairpin. I think he and Kai might end up being really good additions to the cast. As much as I adore the “almost all girls” universes, there is also something really powerful about girls in a normal universe who choose to be with a cutie girl even when there are guys like Kai around. Still not expecting yuri, just hoping ^^

Yeah, I never got why people get so upset when guys are in a yuri work. An all girl universe is a fun concept on its own, sure. But there is something when there are perfectly good guys around, but the girl still chooses the girl.

I prefer this setup as well, dont think too many people would mind what you say if it was actually more common, but to play devils advocate, it probably has to do with the fact that the male will 95% be an author avatar.

Which brings in enough of its own problems, now in a show with lots of girls in it?
Where people are more interested in, I don’t know… the girls?

Sadly too many authors are interested in their own wish fulfillment.

I like all-girls as a personal safeguard, they cant have guys muck it up if they dont exist lol

I can definitely understand not feeling “Safe” when ther’es a guy in what looks like a yuri work. But I’ve seen people say a yuri work was garbage just because a guy was in it, even though the girls didn’t care about the guy at all (and the guy didn’t push any romantic feelings towards the girls either)
That’s more the sort of thing i”m talking about.

I’m as worried as anyone else about how this one is going to go.

I cant speak for everyone but for me at least I only have a problem with male cast members when its a purley subtext show. A male character usually ruins it since they always seem to be pushed as the main love interest. Obviously there are exceptions like symphogear and non bon biyori where the male characters are awesome but they are far and few between. As for a yuri show with confirmed relationships male characters dont bother me because they clearly aren’t in the running.

I’m still very hesitant about this one since he obviously has feelings for her and it’s made by one of my least favorite studios. But so far it has been very enjoyable which really shocked me because of the studio. Also unless something changes later on wouldn’t really feel baited if it goes the het route since not even getting any subtext between them.

Yeah, PA Works hasn’t been the best. They have some winners, but few and far between. I’m pretty cautious about this one too.

It’d be nice if we were in an age where we didn’t have to always worry that a guy being in ruins everything. But we aren’t. I do get the worry..

Plenty more to go still so we don’t know what to expect yet.

Feels good covering an anime where everyone is as “blind” as I am. No need for big red CAPS.

  4. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who picked up on the gay vibes Kuuya was emitting. I mean, it’s hard to read that scene at the bar any other way imo. If that is is the case, that will be a welcome development since it’s not often you get guys in a potentially yuri show that turn out gay. It’s obvious Kai likes Kukuru, but she doesn’t seem to have any interest as of now. Obviously too soon to expect anything, but I’m cautiously optimistic about a relationship between Kukuru and Fuuka as they start to get closer. Only time will tell. Overall, I’m enjoying this show so far and it’s beautifully animated too.

A little late to this one, I blame… games.

Another good ep. Fuuka and Kukuru had a few rough patches but they seem to have smoothed them out and are on good terms again. It’ll be a steep learning curve for Fuuka, but she’ll get the hang of it eventually.

    Penguins are kinda nuts honestly.

Love the art in this show. P.A. Works has nailed it again. If all else fails, which is always something to expect, at least this will be remembered as a nice looking show.

I hope we see more of Udon-chan and Karin. They’re both really cute!
