Uma Musume 3.1: The Mares’ Third Charge

Our favorite batch of (mostly) gay horsies return once more to the delight of many fans. Elated to be covering their journey once more.

We joined our former fangirl pony, now beautiful racer mare, Kitasan Black already competing in a big race. She’s victorious in all her previous ones but this was her first race in the big leagues.

Unfortunately she and the other horsies were blown away by “Mihono Bourbon on steroids”, aka Duramente and her “Negative Speed Force” power. She might as well be Kita’s “Reverse Flash”.

Disappointed but undeterred she’s ready to train the next day. Her fellow fangirl pony turned beautiful mare, roommate/soul mate Satono Diamond wished her a good morning. Notice both sleep with plushies of each other. Very important.

We got the gist of Kita’s goal, to become a great racer like her childhood hero John Cena, I mean Tokai Teio.

I highly doubt anyone here will get the joke.

Anyway Kita kept getting distracted by one good deed after another. At least it helped with her training.

Hopefully it won’t be too long before we’re blessed with Diamond’s debut on the battlefield. She also joined a different team than Kita, who joined Team Spica, because of course she did. Gotta have a setup for the two to eventually race each other in a high stakes match. So Diamond joined Team Campella because the Satono family had a special connection with them.

I hope Sakura Bakushin O becomes the Twin Turbo of the season, meaning that one horse whose presence brings joy to the world. She doesn’t need an emotional journey like other beloved side-horsies, just have her be glorious and show up often. Her namesake’s name is wonderful.

You know this season is already off to a great start with Silence Suzuka back from her International tour and by her beloved Special Week’s side.

I hope Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka grew closer after last season.

Gold Ship will always be welcome. She’s a national treasure.

And with them the three couple and Gold Ship roll call is complete. Coach Guy’s there too but since when have we been invested in him?

Kita asked Teio Cena’s advice on what she focused on during a particular race in Season 2. She said the post-race interview, meaning she’s confident in her victory. However, we would soon see that answer confused Kita.

This episode also served as a cameo-palooza. See how many horsies you can spot and recognize throughout the episode. I like to think this was the reason the CR subs were delayed.

As everyone watched Kita train we were formally introduced to another important horsie this season, Diamond’s sister or cousin Satono Crown.

I never get tired of seeing these horse girls make male bodybuilders look like chumps. #Horsepower.

The day of the next big race was upon us but passing fans discussing the race and give their predictions made Kita really nervous. Diamond tried to motivate her to be herself/race her way but talk of the festival helped her realize maybe the answer is to become a people’s champion just like Teio was to her. That or a horse who brought joy and hope to everyone.

I really liked this moment not just because we got to see Pony Kita and Diamond again but because it was a “I used to be fan watching my hero compete. Now I’m the one wearing the cape” moment. The start of a full circle cycle. Love seeing such stories.

Unfortunately her journey to greatness had only begun. Duramente and other potentially mighty horsies would make Kita’s campaign a very difficult one. Best believe we’ll be here cheering her and eventually Diamond on.

Again so glad to be talking about mostly gay horsies again.
