481st G-View: BOCCHI THE ROCK!

Not the first Girls’ Club/Band anime starring a socially awkward girl but one that took the world by storm. Not since K-ON! has a show in this genre received this much adulation from open-minded animeniacs. Question is whether it is worthy of the hype. Let us find out as we take a look at BOCCHI THE ROCK!

Bocchi the Rock main girls

Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Yuri

Themes: Bands, Music, School

Number of Episodes: 12

G-Rating: 11/10

Plot Summary: Hitori “Bocchi-chan” (“Loner”) Gotō is a lonely high school girl whose heart lies in her guitar. She does nothing every day except strum her guitar by herself at home. However, she happens one day to meet Nijika Ijichi, who is looking for a guitarist for her group named “Kessoku Band.”

Hitori plays another somber melodyAs mentioned in the introduction a Girls Club/Band show starring a socially awkward girl is nothing new. Heck before this is not even the first anime adaptation starring a girl named, or nicknamed in this case, Bocchi. However, what makes this one special is:

1: How relatable Hitori is to many people who also/still have great difficulty conversing with people or are afraid of the outside world. Basically socially anxious people. While I am not exactly one myself I know several friends who were/are that have experienced similar struggles as Hitori in their teenage years.

2: The show made social anxiety hilarious without mocking the very real struggle some people go/went through. First of all is thanks to the excellent voice work by Yoshino Aoyama. Second is how everyone reacts to Hitori every time she has her, let us say, “episodes”, and treats her or learns to adapt to her behavior. It is both funny and sweet on their end. It helps that they all know she is a wonderful girl who just needs the right approach and patience to see her greatness not just as a guitar player but person.

Hitori imagines the horrors of sports festivals3: I rarely go over the presentation this early in reviews but because it plays an important role in the comedy I will make an exception. Intentional pun incoming but the animation in BTR, especially during Hitori’s “episodes” should not rock as hard as it does. Her increased worries about the dangers of the real world are presented in so many different kinds of art styles such as hand drawn, graffiti, and live-action set pieces just to name a few. Seriously I was not expecting this much punch in a Girls’ Band show. Take the wild imagination scenes in cartoons like Bobby’s World and Doug and magnify them by 100. That is what Hitori’s outlandish visualizations of what could happen to her are like. Be it the terrors of working her first job or adult life for a “stoned” loner they are presented in gloriously insane mental scenarios though some of them could be considered “justified concerns”.

Kita heard Hitori play4: Hitori’s facial expressions. It is tied to the presentation but also deserve a category of their own. They are that good.

Having said all this praise about the comedy it, as always, depends on viewers’ sense of humor how much they enjoy it.

Hitori tries to memorize drink menu through songNext to the excellent comedy is Hitori’s journey of slowly leaving her comfort but quickly going back to it. Again something people could relate to. It takes a lot of courage to step up and become great but old habits die hard too. Basically Hitori shows us it is possible to achieve great things one step at a time but fully leaving the loner lifestyle is a whole other story. For some it takes a long time to fully become an extrovert and for others they may live most of their lives as an introvert who at best puts one foot outside. Fortunately for our heroine she has kind and understanding people around to support her on her journey. Naturally many of them too have their own stories to tell and are equally fun to watch show what they got on their own or interacting with the awesome loner.

Kessoku Band trying to reach out to Hitori as alwaysLeft to right: Kita, Ryo, Nijika and Hitori.

First up is band leader and drummer Nijika. She is a cheerful soul who often has an idea and goes for it, sometimes recklessly but is of course very understanding. Most of her struggles revolve around leadership, personal goals and Manager Onee-chan.

Next is Kita. The outgoing redhead, vocalist and most social of the group. Her cheerfulness and nearly limitless energy is the bane of many introverts, meaning the her band mates but they do their best to hang in there. Her joy and cuteness are infectious. However, she too has worries about her abilities and self worth.

Ryo is Ryo. Ryo is the bassist. Ryo is enigmatic (kinda). Ryo is a cheapskate and wealth of knowledge…so long as it is a topic she is interested in. Ryo is what one would get if they made a documentary about enigmatic rock stars. Ryo has an androgynous charm that drives girls wild. Ryo is a fountain of secrets. Ryo is only truly understood by one girl. Ryo is Ryo.

Besides our lovable heroines there are plenty of delightful side-characters from Hitori’s family to a certain shark toothed rock legend who stole the show for some. She too could have her own documentary although she is less enigmatic than Ryo because Ryo is Ryo.

Having said all that the rest is what veterans of the sub-genre would expect from a Girls’ Band show. Lots of practicing, fun times, hard work and awesome performances every now and then. This leads us to the soundtrack. It has multiple EDs and Insert songs. All bangers. The OP is one of my favorites of Fall 2022 and the 2nd ED Karakara, specifically the start of the song. Oh how many times I replayed the first 15 seconds…

The 'end' of HitoriThe yuri in BTR must be experienced with as little knowledge as possible to truly appreciate it. The simple way is to think of it as Hitori’s harem but delving deeper reveals what can only be hinted as the difference between idolization and legitimate passion for someone.

Overall Bocchi The Rock certinly lives up to the hype, especially for Girls’ Club and Band show fans. Hitori’s social anxiety is a hoot thanks to excellent execution. Her character growth is great, especially for people who can relate. Her band mates are equally lovable and the side-cast are full of great peeps. The presentation deserves a ton of praise in and of itself in its variety and the yuri must be experienced with little knowledge beforehand to be appreciated more. Definitely a personal favorite of Fall 2022 and year. The ending left a ton of room for a second season. With it being one of the mega hits of the year I would be shocked if we did not get one at some point.

  2. Definitely one of my favs of the season! Just great stuff all around. Not sure if there’s too much more to say. I’m certain we’ll get a S2 at some point. I eagerly await that day.

Sure, shows focusing on girls bands do well, but I do enjoy Hitori and how they brought out her personality. Yes, CloverWorks is on a roll and how well they brought Hitori’s episodes and her expressions to life. Also, the characters are fun, especially our favorite drunkard, Kikuri.

But I have a feeling that this show has a good chance to receive a second season at some point, but it’s one of my favorites from this year along with others. 2022 bought some really good titles and I expect 2023 will probably bring even more.

This was a real sleeper show that crept up on all of us by surprise.
Bocchi the Rock features very relatable characters, I love the personalities of Kessoku band and how you can see yourself in one (or a mix!) of them (for the record, I’m somewhere between Bocchi and Ryo!)
The comedy is top notch. I can’t help but laugh at all the jokes, and the animators really outdid themselves with all the visual gags in the show. Live action footage, stop motion, the works! Its the show that keeps on giving.
Bocchi x Kita is life, that final episode sealed it.
But Bocchi is just… very shippable lol. She deserves all the attention!
I’d love to get a s2 but I’m willing to wait as long as they keep it as funny as this one.
Overall this is such a fantastic show!

A really great experience! You covered pretty much everything, so my words are short (probably)….(spoilers for the coupling that OG made sure to hide from eyes that have yet to behold the greatness of)

I’ll say it again: I really liked how they handled Kita and Hitori. She goes from obsessively and unhealthily fangirling over Ryou (others even point out the problems with it the whole time) to being Hitori’s greatest support. Starting out first having a spark thanks to HItori (though we didn’t really get to see much of the detail behind the initial spark), and even doing a bit of her delusional fantasies towards Hitori. Treating her like some kind of pariah. But, as the show goes on, the delusions slow down, and eventually, she’s the one who always knows what’s going on with Hitori (or at least is fully aware something is wrong, even when others go “that’s just Bocchi”). She realized who Hitori is, and the actual good parts of her, as well as the more “negative” parts of her. And embraced it.

And also, during that transition, she starts to realize that Ryou is not at all what she initially thought she was, but continues trying to delude herself into thinking that Ryou is this “mysterious cool girl”. Even with those delusions, you can see that her pull towards Ryou has greatly weakened by the end of the show. All the while, she’s becoming the “anchor” that Hitori needs to keep from drifting off into total seclusion. It’s fine if people want to be secluded, but Hitori doesn’t want that, she’s afraid. And Kita ends up being someone who gives HItori those pushes that she needs, when she needs it. Hitori’s growth is by no means all due to Kita, as she had help, and worked very hard to get where she was, but there’s no doubt that Kita really had a hand in coaxing Hitori out of her closet bunker.

It all started with Kita asking for guitar lessons. Which Hitori’s social anxiety was the only reason she ended up starting, but the time with Kita, was a good time for her to start some actual social interactions. And I could probably go on and on, but the show gives everything pretty clearly.

All the while, you see how Nijika and Ryou interact, to give a nice contrast to how Kita and Ryou interact, and even a parallel to how Kita and Hitori interact. Nijika has no delusions whatsoever about Ryou and what kind of girl she actually is. But she embraces that, and also is not afraid to call her out on things. Similar to how Kita even goes “Hitori, get back to reality” a few times. Everyone else just kinda treats Hitori’s fantasies as something that just must pass. But Kita’s the only one who actually calls her out on it. Though it takes till later in the show for this to work, there are instances throughout where Kita’s influence is noticeable. And it’s not like Kita’s always forcing her out of those, just like how Nijika doesn’t always stop Ryou from doing Ryou things.

Though one thing that we didn’t get to see much of, was how Hitori may very well get lots of support from Kita, but she also greatly supports Kita. With Nijika and Ryou, there were a few hints of how Ryou supports Nijika, but not as clearly as Hitori and Nijika. This is pretty common when you compare a protagonist with a main character though. The spotlight just is always heavier on the protagonist and interactions with her.

Uh….I’ll stop there. Fantastic show. One of the best of the season and year overall. Hoping greatly for another season!

Man, this one was quite a banger. The characters here were pretty lovely and relatable in some aspects and the presentation, especially of Hitori’s episodes, were nothing short of spectacular. I’ll definitely watch more of Kessoku Band’s (mainly Hitori’s) escapades.

Hitori has harem queen potential, since she seems to be very shippable. By the end, her affinity with Kita’s the highest to me. She even had some with best drunk Kikuri.

As a funny note, if you had done this G-View at 489, it would’ve marked 100 G-Views since you did your G-View on the other Bocchi anime 😉 .

Kita is one with the strongest affinity with Hitori thus far, yes. Kikuri would make a lovely age-gap contender for sure.

Missed opportunity, yes. Still happy to have reviewed two anime starring girls (kinda) named Bocchi.

Fantastic anime and a total sleeper that caught everyone by surprise. With all the other big titles this past season, this wasn’t really on the list for top shows but man the power of cute girls doing cute things can never be underestimated. Impossible not to love this anime and all the fun antics it brought each week. By far one of, if not the, most enjoyable anime from this past season. It was such a treat to watch each week and all the art is spawned is just as fantastic. Goes without saying, but Kita is totally my favorite. She hit all the right notes for me. They have to do another season as this was just such a hit with everyone, I’d be shocked if this is all we get. Surely on the money end, this has to be selling Blu-rays like crazy. Hope we see Bocchi, Kita, Ryo, and Nijika again in the near future!

ngl this was such a blast to watch (even after 2 times rewatching it) not just because of the yuri and everything great that encompasses the anime, but also, after knowing that the author’s a huge fan of Asian Kung-Fu Generation, it just made me so hype for Kessoku Band’s music that I started marathoning the discography of AKFG, possibly my most favorite Japanese rock band :3 you can defo tell AKFG is in the anime’s DNA with all the references they throw (ex. one of the episodes has a Kimi no Machi Made music video reference)
