367th-369th G-View Triple Whammy: Chio-chan, Jashin-chan and Asobase

When it comes to comedy there is one question that has been difficult to answer since the concept of laughter became known among human beings: “What is funny to you?” Some feel “the misery of others” is funny, others find crude humor (farts, belching, vomiting, pimples etc), hilarious. Something as simple as funny faces can bring tons of laughs. The point I am making is that with the following three comedies readers will have varying opinions on all of them. Also they share similar joke and gag setups so I figured that instead of reviewing one at a time it would be simpler to talk about them all at once. So join me as we take a look at three Summer anime comedies in Chio-chan no Tsuugakurou, Jashin-chan Dropkick and Asobi Asobase.

Chio's School Road.jpg

Alternate Titles: Chio’s School Road, Dropkick My Devil and Asobi Asobase: Workshop of Fun (English)

Genres and themes: Absurdity, Comedy, School Life, Slapstick.

Jashin-chan Exclusive Themes: Angels and Demons, Supernatural

Number of episodes: Chio-chan (12), Jashin-chan (11+Bonus episode) Asobase (12+OVA)

G-Ratings:

  • Chio-chan: 8/10
  • Asobi Asobase: 8/10
  • Jashin-chan: 6/10

Before we get to the plot summaries let us go over the kinds of humor all three shows have in common.

  • Western video game references such as Payday.
  • Breaking the 4th wall
  • Physical humor
  • Exaggerated facial expressions
  • Yuri

All the shows feature jokes about the above at certain points though the amount differs. For example, Chio-chan uses a lot of Western video game reference humor because Chio loves Western action games, especially shooters. Obviously each show has their own style of humor alongside the above similarities but I found it interesting that somehow three comedies airing on the same anime season all use these kinds of jokes. How effective the jokes are, again, depends on the viewer’s sense of humor.

Let us now go over each show starting from my favorite to least favorite. I know most reviewers do it the other way around but whatever.

chios-school-road

Chio is surprisingly athletic.

Plot Summary: High school student Chio Miyamo has adventures commuting to school every day. Chio runs in to problems both big and small, such as construction, a biker gang, a sudden urge to use the bathroom, and more.

At first I thought the show would be about Chio overcoming daily obstacles that get more ridiculous over time as she tries to get to school on time. It kind of is but the “get to school on time” thing is pushed aside the back burner very early and instead the show is about the crazy shenanigans/people Chio and friends come across/get involved with on their way to school. The show’s cast are all delightfully strange. Even the person who appears the most grounded of the cast has their own crazy side. That is exactly why I enjoyed this one most of the three, its wild and crazy brand of humor. I had no idea what to expect going into each episode and each time I was surprised. Even segments that had similar setups, such as Chio constantly making parkour practitioners look amateurish all found ways to make me smile. However, this wild and crazy presentation may be too much for some to handle.

Legendary ass.jpg

It is also the naughtiest of the three comedies yet surprisingly profound at times. Also this magnificent booty belongs to the best side-character. You will walk out of this show with SOME interest in the sport of kabaddi.

The show’s presentation is amusing. It looks plain at first glance but it has several moments that show the impressive amount of detail that went into it. Heck, even the CG did not feel out of place. It was more like a brief 3D segment actually. The soundtrack is quite pleasant with a few standout tunes. The OP and ED are nice.

While I could go into detail on all the side-characters the one who I found the most intriguing was Chio herself. Despite being an avid gamer who, like me, enjoys letting their imagination run wild after playing a very cool game (though I prefer going crazy in private) she is athletic, capable of doing things parkour practitioners wish they could pull off. Despite this she prefers staying out of the spotlight. As the show progresses she does somewhat open up more to people. Other things I liked about Chio are her inner monologues. I have a thing for characters who overthink things or panic inside their heads such as when Chio tried talking to Yuki for the first time. The answer was simple but to her it was like she had to climb Mt Fuji to even be worthy of talking to her. She did not bring up the famous mountain but you get the point. What also helped was the fantastic performance by her seiyu Naomi Oozora. The range she showed as Chio was so good!

Asobi Asobase.jpg

Next up is Asobi Asobase. My 2nd favorite of the three Summer comedies.

Plot Summary: Three classmates play simple hand games. One of the girls is good at games, but hates them as she always lost to her older sister and forced to do chores while growing up. Another girl is of American descent, but raised in Japan, and who only pretends to be bad at Japanese. Another girl usually observes their games, and loses to the other girls.

Asobi Asobase Facials

Asobi Asobase has the most exaggerated facial expressions of the three.

Here is another show that I thought was about a group of girls playing random games with ridiculous stakes. However, while the games they play are not the main focus they do play a secondary role, meaning they are not cast aside. Sometimes the girls play games with usually disastrous results but most of the time they inadvertently turn every person who interacts with them into schizophrenic and paranoid lunatics. The main trio may not be the nicest or brightest bulbs out there but compared to everyone else they are saints. Like Chio-chan Asobi Asobase is more about the soon to be mad mooks they meet up with either to play one of their initially straightforward but ultimately chaotic games or ask  a favor of/”help” the loons. Examples include Kasumi’s butler, that one rival club and the character Aoi Yuuki voices.

Hanako's crazy expression

Besides the mad cast the other defining characteristic of the show are the exaggerated facial expressions. That and the girls screaming a lot, especially Hanako, will either make or break the show for the viewer. I found most of it hilarious. While there was not a seiyu whose performance stood out to me like in Chio-chan there was some very nice voice acting…besides that of my one true love of course. One extra tidbit I liked about Asobase was that some episodes, despite being split into multiple short sketches, continued immediately after the events of the last sketch from the previous episode. For example the last sketch of one episode had the girls filming a sci-fi movie (the end product was as ridiculous as some readers think it was) and the start of the next episode kicked off with the student council president rejecting their film. It is nothing major but to me it was a nice touch.

Asobi Asobase Swimsuit

Best girl for more than her body.

The animation uses what I can only describe as a “light canvas” style, meaning the characters and background all looked like they were being shown in a highly lit room. It was no trouble for me but for some the brightness could be an issue. The soundtrack is nothing special but the OP is charming and the ED is metal as F. Speaking of the ED, be sure not to miss the episode previews as sometimes there is an amusing live-action puppet show as the narrator explains the rules of whatever game they are playing. While they are similar to the games on the show where the rules are simple but the end result is disastrous the some of the games mentioned on the puppet show are on the bizarre side.

Jashin-chan Dropkick

Last but not least we have the Summer comedy I picked up that I enjoyed the least, Jashin-chan Dropkick.

Plot Summary: Yurine Hanazono is a college student who summons Jashin-chan, a demon from the underworld. Now they must live together in a run-down apartment in Tokyo’s Jinbōchō district. If Yurine dies, Jashin-chan gets to go back to the underworld, so she constantly plots to kill Yurine.

Jashin-chan Dropkick

Some of Nerine’s Jashin-chan kills are more brutal than this. Luckily not all of them are censored though one was intentional.

When it comes to Jashin-chan I was instantly wary because it reminded me of another slapstick comedy I despise, Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. Luckily it is more enjoyable but not by much. Jashin-chan is also a better character than Gabriel from Satanichia Dropout but again not by much. It is hard to explain why I did not find most segments on this show funny but it just did not click me for the majority of its run. The problem is not the slapstick as I grew up with the Western classics of Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Tex Avery cartoons, the more popular 90’s Cartoon Network originals etc. I just did not find most of the cast amusing in any way save for two, Yurine and Medusa. Most of the episodes at best got me to chuckle once or twice.

Jashin-chan about to lay the smackdown

This was the one segment I did like.

The segment where Jashin-chan wore the turban seen above was the ONLY one that got me to laugh out loud and repeat it more than once. So the show goes like this. Jashin-chan is usually up to no good, be it planning to kill Nerine (and failing), goofing off somewhere and wasting money needlessly or causing trouble and surprisingly having a 50% success rate…or maybe it is 25%. Point being she sometimes gets away with being mean but this is when she is not going too far or the bullying is directed toward the “pity character”. The other characters do their thing and not much else. Viewers who enjoy what that “thing” each character does will have little trouble watching the show. This is the comedy that had the most 4th wall breaking and token anime references. Everyone is aware this is an anime adaptation of a manga series and roll with it whereas the other two are a bit more subtle with their breaking.

The overall presentation is decent. Nothing really stood out to me in animation or music. It was all fine. I suppose it was very colorful so there is that. Even the more brutal kills.

I mentioned not liking the cast very much. To explain this let us briefly go over the characters I cared to remember:

  • Jashin-chan is mean by nature. She is a demon after all despite this being another show where most angels are depicted as meaner than demons. Even so she has a few moments of decency every now and then. These are also where I found her mildly amusing.
  • Yurine is cool. No complaints about her.
  • Minos…has decent tiddies. Other than that she existed.
  • Medusa is the most likable. She is a kindhearted gorgon forced to hide her face from most humans for obvious reasons (Look up gorgons). She is also Jashin-chan’s girlfriend and a saint for putting up with her shenanigans.
  • Pekora is a “pity/bullied character” and nothing else. Viewers who like pity characters will like her. Me. I need more than that in a pity character like our future ruler Satanichia and Rin from Bakuon!!
  • Mei Tachibana tried being an inspiration but instead is a a poor person’s Sanae from Ika Musume.

Everyone else I did not care about.

Now for the main event of all three from least to most.

Asobi Asobase had one segment with yuri in it of both the legit and questionable kind. It was certainly interesting thanks to the Engrish and outcome.

Chio and Manana, best friends

Chio X Manana.

Next is up is Chio X Manana. Two childhood friends who bicker and prank each other a lot but when push comes to shove there is no one else they would depend for support than each other. Also pay close attention to Manana’s emotions every time she thinks about Chio. Then there is the girl with the fantastic booty I showed above. Let me put it this way…she is a true hero and inspiration to lesbians all over the world. It is not hard to figure out why. Just pay attention whenever she appears. Sadly her appearances are rare but when she gets the spotlight or gets a cameo we are blessed. Also be sure to watch the last episode all the way through.

Jashin-chan X Medusa

Jashin-chan X Medusa.

Lastly we have Jashin-chan X Medusa. An interesting couple to say the least. To an outsider the first thought that comes to mind is most likely “abusive relationship” but it is more like an invisible bond that ties the two together. On paper a relationship like this should not work at all or is predicted to have a disastrous premature end…but somehow they pull it off and are admittedly adorable together. Their relationship is the highlight of the show. There are other yuri moments (Jashin-chan kinda has a harem like Ika Musume) but they are not as delightful or amusing as Jashin-chan and Medusa together. While Jashin-chan and Satanichia Dropout have a 6/10 G-Rating I agree with Rory and say this is superior because of JashiMedu.

Overall it is exactly as I said at the start of this triple review. The enjoyment of these shows depend entirely on the person’s sense of humor. I really liked Chio-chan and Asobi Asobase but Jashin-chan not so much. Other people could see Jashin-chan as one of the greatest anime comedies of our generation and not think highly of Chio and Asobase for all I know. It is all up to the viewer at the end of the day.

I knew you had something against Jashin-chan because of how long the G-view was taking, but didn’t think it was this bad. I was even surprised to see the title because for me Jashin is way different to the other 2 shows, would never group them together. While I agree the comedy was superior in Asobi Asobase, I don’t think the comedy was the main draw at all in Jashin-chan (even if the genre says comedy in websites, is different what a website says to what a show actually contains), it might have been in Dokuro-chan and Gabriel, but this isn’t either of those shows even if they look similar at first glance, sure the first episodes looked like it would be a gory comedy, but as the show progressed with Medusa’s role becoming more apparent and Jashin mellowing down with the attempts of killing Yurine I realized this show is enjoyed more if you watch it for the Slice of Life of these demons and Jashin x Medusa moments. For me the show was more similar to the yuri slice of life in Kirara than a comedy that tries to make you laugh, that’s probably why I enjoyed it more and wouldn’t compare it to the completely different bag that was Asobi Asobase.

I say this as much as I can: If someone really enjoyed a show that I didn’t, great. Cherish it as much as you like. Won’t change my mind on it though.

Also I enjoyed it the least. Doesn’t mean I hated it.

My favorite was definitely Chio-chan, second Jashin-chan.

The other show was not good for me sorry, that faces were so ugly :/ and the story was not good for me

    Good post!

Wouldn’t say the faces were ugly but not the best either. None of the shows had much of a story because they are not story driven. Yes they had ongoing character subplots but not a main plot.

Asobi was my favorite but then Chio x Manana ship is getting stronger. So now Chio-chan is my number 1. Asobi made me laughed a lot more though. Jashin-chan was alright. Sometimes I don’t understand the jokes.

I am a gamer my self and sometimes I too thinking with my gamer’s brain. I liked Chio-chan’s monologued as well.

And Asobi definitely not a show about cute girls doing cute thing. There a lot of facial expressions and I found it hilarious. Not everyone gets it, but that’s okay. Overall I had a lot of fun. Watching these shows after a certain yandere show helped a lot.

Yup. Asobi and Chio were pretty good while Jashin-chan is an acquired taste.

I’ve been there on more than one occasion also.

True. Some didn’t find Asobi funny or found the weird facials not as good as those of Kakegurui for example.

Chio-chan along with Harukana definitely helped ease the tension after watching said yandere show and Asobi kicked off Sunday mornings with a fun start.

  4. Rory says:

For me, Chio-chan is my favourite of the three comedies as well. Asobi Asobase was good, but Chio-chan’s greater yuri potential gave it the edge. I think both being wildly unpredictable really helped to sell the comedy.

Jashin-chan grew on me as the season progressed, and I ended up enjoying it a bit more than you did. That was probably thanks to Medusa – I know Jashin could be a jerk, but the parts that focused on her and Medusa just being girlfriends were delightful.
Whilst Medusa did have to put up with Jashin’s shenanigans, the gorgon showed that she can give it back if she felt like it. Reminds me somewhat of Yui from Mitsuboshi Colors in a way.
A couple of pieces from the soundtrack stood out to me: the broken flute music added some extra humour to scenes. There was also what I can only really describe as a pleasant, slice of life tune. I also really enjoyed both the OP and ED.

Having angels and demons together brings to mind Gabriel DropOut, and I’d consider Jashin-chan around the same quality. Ask me to pick one of the two, and I’d say Jashin-chan simply because of Medusa.

All in all, the summer was a pretty good season for comedy.

Yup. Chio-chan had more yuri goodness, giving it an edge. It was also wilder whereas Asobi was crazy. Good stuff from both.

Ah yes. Good comparison. I found Medusa more enjoyable myself despite Yui and her being similar.

Could not keep interested in asobase
    Moving forward!
Chio was definitely the funniest of the three. The comedy was always handled well, and I never really felt like it was “more of the same” like I did as I watched Asobase.
Jashin was the least comedic, and it really deserved its own G view, as it had a lot of character growth/plot development/yuri, but if you didn’t like it, there’s nothing that can be done of that. It just was sad seeing such a moving cute show being shoved in with two other shows like it was an “afterthought”.
I’ve said it elsewhere to other people, but, Jashin-chan really surprisingly turned out to be the feelgood comedy of the season. The laughs were less than Chio, but it made up for it in adorable moments in spades ~
Wasn’t sure who to ship Yurine with, Pekola was a choice because of how Yurine always strangely went out of her way to help her, but then Poporon showed up and while it started out pretty bad, their relationship possibilities really began to open up near the end!
Maybe an Ot3’ish thing with Jashin and Medusa? I mean, Yurine will die in less than a century, while Jashin and Medusa will live on for eons. Something like that might work? Medusa seems open to sharing as long as Jashin always remembers who #1 is. Doubt Jashin’d ever forget that though. She’s pretty darn smitten with Medusa ❤
off topic but: why did you keep on calling her “nerine”? Her name is Yurine. Some wrestling thing maybe..?
Chio was just nonstop hilarious, and it was nice to have that spice of yuri on top of all the laughter. Too bad Chio’s a dense thickheaded protagonist. I mean, poor Manana. Gave a flat out love confession…

You kept your dislike of Asobase short. Very commendable.

I didn’t love Jashin-chan as much as you did but it filled your heart with great joy and that’s what matters most.

Ah. I’ll go correct Yurine’s name.

Manana kinda struggled (boys and crap) but realized the person she wants to spend the rest of her life with is Chio. That was wonderful.

I would really like some more Chio-chan. That would be splendid but I have a feeling all three are one and done. If I’m wrong and all three do come back in the near future, awesome.

        I am trying

Well, for Manana it was probably status more than “Love” when it came to anything with boys. But in the end, she did choose chio over everything (even if it was based off a total misunderstanding XD)

Didn’t watch the other two, but Asobi was freaking comedy gold to me. Every episode had me laughing so hard that I literally thought I might stop breathing and made my stomach muscles ache. I think what sold the comedy was not as much the faces, but the voice acting. They were all great, but Hanako’s VA was a legend and she absolutely outdid herself on this one. I hope she gets some kind of recognition and more popular. I loved the girl from the Occult club most I think, she was fun. Definitely can say this is my comedy of not just season, but probably year. It’s safe in my Summer Top 3 at least for sure. I really hope we are blessed with a second season. I also must mention, the ED was metal af! Probably my fav ed of the season, maybe year.

Can’t deny the excellent performance of Hanako’s seiyu. I also agree that some of the seiyu stood more than others like the aforementioned Occult Club president.

I enjoyed all but one of the segments. The Boss Baby parody was lame. Other than that it was a really good comedy for sure.

  7. Asobase and Jashin-chan were really fun and comedy shows with their own quirks. Asobase being about three girls and outrageous, ridiculous faces. Jashin-chan being about two comedic duo and their angelic/demonic friends. Every girl in each show is lovable.

I only watched the first few episodes of Chio-chan but considering how its manga ended, the anime turned out to be yuribait. I would not put it in same league as Asobase and Jashin-chan.

  8. Mauron says:

Asobi was a bizarre and fun series that needed more puppet segments.

With Jashin, I was never able to decide if I preferred Jashin x Yurine or Jashin x Medusa. Both had positives and negatives in their relationship. Minos was underutilized.

Yuki developed a desire to play Kabaddi after her first game. Considering how that ended, and her other interests, I’m hoping she can win Kushitori’s heart. Chio x Manana was great throughout.

  9. Asobi was ok for me, nothing amazing, quite. I was pleasantly surprised by the possibly trans character and the Yuri moments, but the show never went further with them, so eh. Maybe if a season 2 comes along and develops some of those things further.

I liked Chio-chan quite a bit. A lot of those situations were just brilliantly over-the-top in the most needless ways. And I really like Chio’s monologues as well, perhaps partly due to also being an avid introspective gamer. Though Kushitori actually didn’t do that much for me, possibly due to my dislike of the more “hands-on approach” female pervert archetype. She was ok, but not really special for me.

    And as for Jashin-chan…

I liked Yurine a lot. Definite #1 character of the show for me.

As for #2…Pekola. I like characters who struggle a fair bit, and I guess I find myself in a vaguely similar situation (minus the homelessless) in my life right now…so I guess I connected her in some ways like that.

Though…I didn’t actually end up really shipping anyone at all in that show. My ships sorta got off on a weird track in episode 1, and then I realized that was a weird direction, but then I never really found myself on the right track to shipping anyone afterward either…Medusa & Jashin I never really quite “saw the love” between, and the cop was just again, an archetype I dislike a little. As for Yurine x Pekola…while I can see where it would come from, and I like both of them, both of them just seemed a little bit too distant from each other, and thus it never really went anywhere, and the show did little to really bring them closer in the end, so…

Like I said, it’s all about the person’s sense of humor.

I doubt Asobase is a series that would go in-depth exploring transgender characters. If I’m proven wrong and they do explore it, great.

      You dislike gropers. It’s cool.

You’re in the group that can’t see JashiMedu working out at all. Understandable.

I mean….she literally said “I love you” to Medusa. There was also the piggyback. How Jashin was basically BSoD’d when Medusa actually seemed like she was gonna break it off. Medusa’s about as forthcoming as you can be with what she thinks of Jashin….I am thinking maybe you averted your eyes because of how it’s kind of an “abusive relationship”? Like, any two real people in a relationship like that is destined for failure and ending in something worse than just “failure”, but I think it works because they’re demons,a nd they’ve known each other for centuries.

I don’t think there’d be anything wrong with saying you didn’t like the relationship, but well, it’s going into the “Lioness only kissed Nina because of friendship” territory to say there’s not something between them. I can get being uncomfortable with the relationship though.

      • Oh, I’m not saying I can’t see there possibly being something there, as such, the show made that clear enough. I’m just not on board the ship, essentially, myself, due to my own mind derailing things right at the start before the show really introduced the ship, even if I can very much see the ship there.

Asosbi Asobase was my Anime of the season. So funny and absurd with lots of great characters and way more continuity than you would expect (in the the last episode they show the leader of the shogi club that they introduced in one of the first episodes and I completely forgot about her).
That OP is so devilishly devious, I love it so much.
There was that scene that could be yuri since they never specifically said that Oozora was a guy (even though they heavily implied it).
They did tease a season 2 in one episode and I really hope it happens.

Chio’s School Road was also really funny. Some of the stories were very relatable (like playing at night and trying not to be found out by your parents).
There were definitively some cute Chio x Manana moments.
The previews at the end were really cool (I want to see Andou’s sister taking on the other girls in her school, would make for a great spin off). The “bloopers” were genius.

I watched the first episode of Jashin-chan and it wasn’t my kind of thing.

Maybe Oozora is transgender. We could certainly hope.

Chio X Manana were a cute ship and thanks to Manana’s feelings and the bloopers the chances are high there’s much more to their relationship.

Best to leave right away than force yourself to continue.

They all brought me joy and laughter especially after watching some intense shows like Happy Sugar Life or shows that really left me hanging – they’d help me forget about those things. However, Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro is my number 1 out of these three. The cute Chio x Manana ship and the silly things that one would never think of happening when going to school but could really happen. I was so happy with that accidental kiss they had at the bloopers 😀

Next is Asobi Asobase, their uh… expressiveness caught by surprise in the beginning but it’s really funny as it went on.

And lastly Jashin-chan Dropkick, I liked the the gory stuff and cute moments of Medusa and Jashin-chan 🙂

Especially the way they reacted after kissing. Clearly there’s much more between them and that’s wonderful.

I’m used to crazy and random absurdist humor like this so it didn’t take me long to get into it. Glad you were also able to enjoy it.

It’s better than Dokuro-chan at least.

  13. For Asobi asobase is all fun and all the downside for me is just the expressions made me want to close one eye.
For chio-chan…. no words can describe the awesomeness that show is(especially the ‘bloopers’) and I’m so jealous of Chio’s athleticness.
Lastly, Jashin-chan… I’m fairly a simple person and very easily amused, from 4th wall breaking, bad jokes to comedy gory so this is up to my alley. I totally love the op for Jashin-chan though. But that probably biased for Jashin-chan’s seiyuu’s amazing voice(which tbh I was totally not expected and not prepared for but I guess play in the factor the fact that I ABSOLUTELY adore Mari it just made it way better in my head)

Chio-san was the funniest of the three in my opinion. Such a colourful cast of characters it had and the situations Chio found herself in due to her overthinking things or trying to apply game logic to the real were very funny. I’d watch a series involving Chiharu taking on The Seven Spears of her school. They even had bloopers at the end of the show! On another note, Madoka’s love of butts easily rivals Katsuragi’s love for boobs, which is why a Kabbadi showdown between those two would be one for the history books.

Asobi Asobase also had a colourful cast but they were mostly on the crazier end. The facial expressions and the voice acting from the main trio, especially Hanako’s, made the show for me and the gags had me laughing for the most part. Tsugumi Aozora was an enigma and any mystery revolving around her(?) was left unresolved. I totally feel bad for Higuchi-sensei. The poor lady can’t catch a break.

Jashin-chan got some laughs outta me but it wasn’t as good as the other two in that department. It was a nice slice-of-life show about a human girl and her heavenly/demonic buddies otherwise. I get the similarities to Gabriel Dropout but here’s the deal; I compare Jashin more to Satania due to those two being the butt of the jokes. However, I say that Jashin really deserved Yurine’s judgements while Satania was a poor, defenseless demon who did nothin’ wrong;). Medusa’s the best and the Jashin/Medusa moments were sweet when Jashin wasn’t being a spendthrift.

Shipping-wise, Manana/Chio’s good, as is Jashin/Medusa. Yurine/Jashin’s a maybe from me.Poporon/Pekola…I think there’s something to work with there, especially since Poporon was being such a tsundere towards her that one skit.
