YMC #26: Kimochi no Katachi

Here’s another manga that may pique yuri readers’ interests.

Number of Volmues: 2. 7 chapters.

Genres: Comedy, Romance, Yuri, Angst

Plot Summary: A love story between Satsuki, a girl who is having trouble accepting who she is due to a past experience that continues to trouble her to the present day, and the sempai she has a crush on, Kano, who is initially oblivious to both Satsuki’s feelings and her own.

To sum up the manga in one sentence, it’s a good manga with a serious message hidden behind its fluffy exterior.

The first chapter pretty much spoils the end results so I recommend starting from chapter 2 and once you finish chapter 6, pick up chapter 1 before going to chapter 7.

Satsuki's pain

Now then. What made this story interesting, as explained in the summary, was Satsuki’s struggles with accepting the fact that she is a lesbian due to both an understandable past experience and to avoid possibly being bullied by her female classmates. The fact that said girls already showed hints of being discriminative did not make things easier for Satsuki.

Kano, on the other hand, had a less complicated issue. Basically, she liked a lot of things but did not understand what it was like to truly have amorous feelings for someone. Heck, even when the signs of her liking Satsuki were there, Kano was initially oblivious to this.

The two most important supporting characters were male hunk Kishi and best friend Mana. What you need to know about Kishi is that he played the role of “male interference”. Whether he’s likable or not depends on the reader. Personally, he was alright.

Satsuki and Mana

Mana was both Satsuki’s supportive friend and the person dedicated to knocking some sense into Satsuki’s head…by any means necessary.

Overall, another short story that told everything it needed to and then some. I see no reason to not recommend this one to all Nation members, especially considering the message it wants to tell its readers: Lesbians have hearts too and said heart can be just as easily broken if bullied or misjudged. Also, some pains do not go away easily.

P.S.: After reading the manga, check out the below post for a more in-depth look at the serious topic brought forth by this manga.

I read this not too long ago. I started with the first chapter but read through the rest. It’s a cute story imo. Something anyone should read if they like yuri manga with a good dose of cuteness in it.

A friend of mine introduced me to this manga. I cried…a lot. I have been Satsuki. Mortally afraid of being found “different” among her peers, she would rather cut herself off from any meaningful contact.

“The Line” is not metaphor. It actually exists within the hearts of many a young lesbian. I only wish this title could be licensed. I would donate copies to high school libraries around the country.

I can understand the pain you went through if it is similar or the same as Satsuki’s. However, I am glad that, like her, you were eventually able to find the happiness you sought long and hard for.

How comes I didn’t know about that? It looks so good!
But before I’ll read it let me ask you something, if you had to name a yuri manga that is the most similar to this one, which one would you choose?

When i first read to this, i cried as well. I remember i read it the way you recommended it. After that, i went right away to the Yuri Talk post to see people’s opinion.
The first chapter really made me grind my teeth. Is just like you said “it’s a good manga with a serious message hidden behind its fluffy exterior.” Now that i’m rereading it, i’m following the manga’s order and i found myself sad again because of the lizard… that lizard sure is an important metaphor. It hits me even more because i can’t stand bugs nor amphibians. Good thing i, like Satsuki, have a supportive friend like Mana.

I hoped more people would comment there but it’s a touchy subject so it’s understandable.
Lizards are pretty cool, the larger ones anyway. It’s hard to notice the smaller lizards who run away quickly and hide.
Everyone would want a friend like Mana.

now that I’m back to watching less than 10 current anime series (last season of > 10 being a rare exception), I have a bit more time to catch up on things. This manga is a good read. It also uncommon to see one switching between regular and 4koma layouts. But I guess it’s fitting enough since the dramatic portion of the story is told in normal format while the more lighthearted, fluffy, comedy happy moments are in 4koma.

While it is pretty short, there’re 2 parts that really stand out to me. The first is in how it depicts
Satsuki’s internal angst, using the line and lizard metaphors. It is very effective and really touches my heart. The other part is when Kano-sempai unexpectedly showed up at Satsuki’s home to support her. Unlike her usually more ditzy self, she presented herself with confidence and helped resolve the conflict very maturely. Another “small sempai” well worthy of the love and adoration of her younger girlfriend (I’m sure you caught the Non Non Biyori reference here).

I’m half done with Octave right now, and will continue with it after this, as well as marathoning Bamboo Blades on the side.

Glad you found the time to read this one as it’s a short, yet impact worthy manga.

Holy Shorties are valuable treasures to the people who fall in love with them.

Enjoy both Octave and Bamboo Blade.
