Yuri is My Job! Episode 10: The Cook’s Book

The Gyaru and The Beast arc continues. This time we got a highly anticipated backstory and the ongoing dilemma between our potential second couple.

Sumika confronts Kanoko again

It looked like Kanoko felt troubled by her Inner Beast coming out revealing her deepest feelings for Hime to Sumika. The following day she hoped to bottle it all up again and not act on them instead focus on restoring the status quo between herself and Hime. That was until she saw Sumika waiting up the stairs. Sumika decided the next course of action was explain what she meant by Kanoko bringing romance to Cafe Liebe (again) was a terrible idea.

Mai, Sumika and Young NeneWithout revealing her name she told Kanoko my sweet Nene’s backstory. At first it was the three of them at Cafe Liebe. All was well…until SHE joined the team.

Nene and GoeidoHer real name was Yoko but I’ll use her stage name Goeido. Sumika could tell Goeido was bad news from the start but couldn’t deny she was a gorgeous charismatic enigma. She also knew Nene had fallen for her. At first Sumika didn’t take action but was wary regardless.

Goeido tells Sumika it's just for showOne day Geoido approached Sumika wondering why she kept her distance. In the present Sumika said her problem with their relationship was it interfering with her and Nene’s sisterhood pact. Nene was Sumika’s Petite Soeur at the time. Back to the flashback as Nene showed no intention of hiding her love Goeido foreshadowed later events by telling Sumika “Don’t worry about it. I’m just putting on a spicy show”. As the two openly dated Sumika felt her sisterhood with Nene fall apart. She couldn’t take it anymore and warned Nene her girlfriend was bad news but she’s like “It’s none of your business”.

After that Nene wanted to spend more time with Goeido and less with Sumika. The gyaru wondered what the big deal was with falling in love. Was it really necessary in the workplace or life in general?

Sumika catches Nene and Goeido kissHer worries came true as she’s shocked to find the couple kissing. We’d learn it wasn’t the kiss that shocked her but Goeido wearing Nene’s Kreuz. She pretty much dumped Sumika for the shady babe. Looks like that warning from last time did it.

Goeido quits Cafe LiebeSumika thought maybe it wasn’t all bad until one day Goeido just up and quit the cafe ending her relationship with Nene in the blink of an eye. Poor Nene left the stage for the kitchen.

Kanoko feels no need to go further with HimeKanoko: What does any of that have to do with me?

Sumika: You don’t like seeing Hime with Mitsuki, right? Stop this madness before it’s too late.

Kanoko: Stay away from me! I refuse to be a “good kid”. I will never stop loving Hime. I couldn’t care less about the sisterhood, Blume elections or any of that crap.

Sumika: You’re eventually going to destroy the balance of the cafe, right? You want Hime all to yourself, right?

Kanoko: No. All I need is Hime by my side forever. As long as she never falls in love with anyone there’s no need for me to confess. Besides, if you want to ban workplace romance so badly I’m not the one you should be talking to. Are we done now?

Sumika: So you won’t stop?

Kanoko: I said I won’t do anything so what more is there to stop?

More Hime X Mitsuki cutenessAs Kanoko saw Hime and Mitsuki bonding even if partially staged her inner beast couldn’t handle it. All she wanted was for Hime to go back to her “old self”. With Sumika being the enemy and Hime no longer running for Blume she wondered what other choice there was. She briefly considered running herself but quickly dropped the idea. Suddenly fans of hers showed their support but she ran off like always.

Kanoko snarls at SumikaSumika tried to calm the situation but only fanned the flames between her and Kanoko. Back in the dressing room Hime wondered why she wasn’t getting along with Sumika again. Kanoko tried saying there wasn’t a need to talk to her because she wasn’t “not so bad after all” like they thought. Hime pushed for answers but Kanoko couldn’t tell her it’s because “Sumika doubted her despite saying she wouldn’t make advances on Hime”.

Distraught KanokoSuffice to say holding back her love from Hime and being accused by Sumika was tearing her apart. The next day things were strained between the besties when Sumika saw a teary Kanoko and went to comfort her but Kanoko thought she’s accusing her of making a move on Hime again.

Yes. Kanoko looked hot in the screengrab.

Nene tells Sumika to stop being a guardianAs Sumika wondered what to do my sweet Nene laid down the law again. As Sumika explained the situation but didn’t get an affirming answer from Nene she just asked why she sacrificed their sisterhood to be with Goeido despite her warnings? Nene’s like “Falling in love was my choice. I know you’re trying to be nice but you have no right telling me how to live my life. I loved, had my heart broken and cried. Guess what? Life goes on. It was one failure. Maybe one day I can love again. Same goes for Kanoko. She knows the risks of loving someone.” Sumika worried what would happen if she too had her heart broken to which Nene said “She’s not a ‘destroyer’ anymore, right? She’s in emotional turmoil so why not try a different approach.”

We’ll find out what her next move is along with the Blume election results next time. Good stuff as always.

  3. I can totally understand Sumika’s concerns and why she feels the need to intervene. They once again have a solid work environment and are all friendly enough with each other. So naturally she doesn’t want to see that destroyed. However, she had to get a stern lesson from Nene that you can’t interfere with other people’s love lives and she was absolutely right as well. Only the parties involved can decide how to handle the situation and pushing them in an opposing direction will only cause friction and likely more drama. So Sumika definitely needs to approach it differently.

Not sure how she will exactly, but I’m sure she will in a way that will allow them to grow even closer and eventually become a couple, as we know they will. Hopefully then Kanoko will chill out a bit on her obsessiveness over Hime then too, since her long term plans of keeping her to herself forever isn’t very healthy. Nice to see Yano and Hime continue to develop behind the scenes. Looking forward to finding out who will win the Blume contest next week.

Loved the backstory and extra reveals. Nene telling it like it is to Sumika was excellent. She’s right on the money.

It’ll be very interesting to see how Sumika tries to help Kanoko and set her on the right path because the one she’s on now is unhealthy and can only end in despair for her.

It’s interesting to see Nene’s backstory as it shows why Sumika feels this way, but maybe part of this is because she is still in the closet and feel some kind of resentment that Yoko took Nene away from her and then dump her just like that.

Obviously, Sumika can’t control love as it’s possibly not the best approach. Still, kind of feel bad for Kanako, but it’s obvious she doesn’t stand a chance against Mitsuki. Jealousy is a strong feeling, but I do hope Sumika find some resolve, maybe steer Kanako to her maybe.

Sumika: you’re gonna do something bad so I’m gonna stop you
    Kanoko: no I’m not
    Sumika:????

I like how this dumbfounds Sumika until the talk with Nene. Kanoko may not do anything funny but she’s someone who’s gonna get hurt and Sumika can be there for her when that happens.

I found this arc interesting. Because both of them are wrong but also right at the same time. Kanoko is too possesive toward Hime but she’s not gonna do anything to jeopardize their friendship. Sumika is so obsessive banning romance in the workplace but also she doesn’t want to see Kanoko got hurt. And she WILL get hurt. Maybe she see herself in Kanoko back when she and Nene were “together”.

Anyway, thanks to Nene, Sumika finally realized that she can’t prevent love. Despite the heartbreak Nene was happy. She probably will do it again if she found someone she loves. There’s a lot of workplace that bans romance, and it never works. Well, she still a teenager. She may or may not know that she was in love with Nene (I’m looking at you too, Hime). I’m looking forward to see what happens next. Because I got nothing and the show is about to end.

I want to add that this arc is not a side couple arc. They’re the another main couple.

      Quite right Nee-San.

Yes. It’s 99.9999999% likely Sumika subconsciously loved Nene but didn’t realize it.

You’re right. They got just as much screen time as HimeMitsu.

You know a show is good when the author remembers not just the names of every character in the show, but also even remembers both names (real and stage) of a newly introduced character.
So glad we got more Nene, and I love that she isn’t just a broken heart stereotype but rather a real person continuing on. Also loving the complex dynamic being set up between Sumika and Kanoko is.

Finally the Nene backstory we’ve been waiting for!

She had a rough time in her early cafe days, things did not go as she was expecting them to. Goeido played a mean game there with Nene, giving her that affection then dumping her in the end, but in the long run Nene was able to come out better and now she’s in the position to give Sumika advice.

Speaking of Sumika, I can see where she’s coming from when dealing with Kanoko. She wants what’s best for the cafe as she’s been through a difficult situation before, but at the same time she’s forcing her views on Kanoko too much which is also not a good thing to do. As mentioned though, Nene had to set her straight saying not to interfere with another person’s love life.

Also do feel that Kanoko is way too possessive of Hime. She verging on yandere with her pretty much. So I can see why Sumika wants to get her to refocus at take a step back on the matter.

It’s a complex situation with these girls but it’s exciting to watch!

Oh and I gotta ask you, Nene with short hair or long hair?
