Yuri is my Job! Episode 1: Help “Wanted”

Time for the big show of the Spring 2023 season to lead the way.

As usual I only ask to follow two rules during my weekly coverages:

1: No source spoilers (manga/Light Novel/ Game etc.)

2: No discussing/comparing similarities/differences between anime and source.

Hime worshiped

We were introduced to our main heroine Hime lauded by boys and girls as the pinnacle of cuteness and virtue.

Hime's true selfHowever, this was a facade. Getting everyone to fawn over her was part of her master plan to marry into a wealthy family. Later in the episode we’d get a hint that there’s more to her facade than a mere get rich quick scheme.

Hime bumps into another girlAfter school Hime’s still thinking about her plan but not paying attention to what’s in front of her and bumped into another girl. She apologized and tried to charm her way out of the situation but her power worked against her as the other girl was taken aback by her cuteness. Hime tried to walk away but the other girl, Miss Mai, seemed to fake her injury. She’d later appear wearing an arm cast but I still don’t know if she’s lying. For the time being it wasn’t important.

Sumika corners MaiMiss Mai’s sexy gyaru friend Sumika heard what happened and “kabedon’d” our wily heroine. With nowhere left to run Hime’s at the mercy of the two and taken to Cafe Liebe.

MitsukiMiss Mai asked Hime to wait a moment. She decided to take a peek and was shocked to meet the beautiful Mitsuki Cannons. After brief pleasantries Hime saw her as a fair older maiden from a shoujo manga. This was connected to earlier in the episode where Hime’s classmates compared her to the token innocent protagonists in said genre but Hime thought herself more a heroine who caught the eyes of an ouji-sama or something like that.

Hime kabedon by a familiar beautyOnce her orientation began it became clear what kind of cafe it was, a cosplay cafe starring ladies playing the roles of lesbians in a classic all-girls Catholic school setting. Customers were treated to a vintage scene of a gorgeous senpai wooing her shy but also attractive kouhai. Seeing this Hime thought it was too much for her and again tried to retreat until she’s caught in a familiar situation. She’s surprised to learn the hot megane senpai was the hot gyaru Sumika. You could tell she’s a pro because her kabedon technique in real life and on stage were different according to our heroine.

Sexy chefDunno who this hot chef is yet but she’s my #1 hype girl.

Back to work and Hime had trouble fitting in as customers could easily tell she wasn’t trying. With a little push from Mitsuki and the customers’ critiques Hime used her full fake cutie powers. It was well received.

Mitsuki twitched at being called Onee-SamaThings got sour when Hime called Mitsuki onee-sama. After their shift was over she let the shortie have it. Hime couldn’t tell what kind of person Mitsuki was off stage other than she’s mean to her for some reason.

Mai has Hime work there a while longerHime hoped to be done with Cafe Liebe after Miss Mai came back but upon seeing her still injured arm knew she’s out of luck.

Kanoko's accurate guess of Hime's situationNext day Hime’s worried homie Kanoko rightfully guessed her friend’s current situation but Hime didn’t want to admit it.

Maria-Sama ga Miteru homageBack at the cafe Miss Mai could tell Hime and Mitsuki weren’t getting along so she had them take part in the Soeur, I mean “Schwestern” system. Same thing really. Maria-Sama ga Miteru hizzle up in ma nizzle! Miss Mai wondered why Hime called Mitsuki onee-sama. It’s because when she first saw her she emanated a beautiful and dependable senior aura. Mitsuki refused to accept a screw up as her “imouto”.

Mitsuki begrudingly fixes Hime's necktieHime took this as a challenge and went all out to prove herself worthy only to not read the room and make things even worse. Seeing the customers’ reactions to their scuffle Mitsuki saved face and begrudgingly applied the “CROOKED NECKTIE FIXING OF DESTINYYYYYYYYY!”…all while having an absolute scorn for Hime behind the scenes. Our heroine was more confused than ever.

I’m sold. Ready for more!

It’s a very good start. Some of Hime’s mess-ups could have been avoided if Mai explained the whole sisterhood thing, well Hime wouldn’t mess up this badly, although she find a way to given her ditzy facade.

Oh yeah, the Yuri (well the acting) is good so far, but I wonder if Hime can defrost Mitsuki. Only time can tell. But yes, Hime is cute for sure.

A very good start! I’m in!

Sumika is my current favorite. I do love sexy gyaru!

From the OP it looks like Hime’s cute friend, Kanoko, will join the crew? And pairs up with Sumika, which I’m all for!

    I’m excited for more!

    Hi.

I didn’t look up anything from the source (as usual, because I’m a lazy ass) but I found myself really enjoying this episode!
Clearly there’s a running theme of playing a role, with Hime playing the incorruptible pure girl and the whole cafe roleplaying.
I did get a laugh out of some scenes, like Hime’s whole class basically worshipping her lol
Honestly think Mai just saw Hime off the street and decided to recruit her good old fashioned guilt trip style which makes it funnier for me.
Although apparently no one hasn’t explicitly spelled out to HIme that yuri is the main thing in this cafe! You can’t just be throwing “onee-sama” out there casually!

What are the Odds of this getting a Dub? It doesn’t seme to be a HIDIVE one since if CR doesn’t enounce one soon it’s probably safe to say I should just follow it Dubbed.

I’m tired of being out of the loop all season because the Dub studios still neglect Yuri.

  6. Pretty good start. I’m definitely excited to see where this will take us, considering it is one of the hype shows of the season. Let the Yuri Spring season commence!

If I had to guess, I think Mai was injured but is either exaggerating how bad it actually is or even if she isn’t exaggerating, will keep the sling on longer than she needs to as to keep Hime around longer.

I fully and completely believe Mai is a schemer who did not get “taken in by Hime’s cuteness”, but noticed that Hime was a talented actress. I definitely do not believe for a moment her arm was really that injured.

Poor Hime thinking she’s supposed to be a shoujo manga heroine looking for her dream guy, thus trying to get the audience to find her “cute”, when the whole point is how characters intearact with each other, and the audience is literally the audience.

It’s cruel to not explain things better, but methinks Mai is a bit sadistic and also figured it would bring some new life into things. I am very much looking forward to more of her ❤

The episode was not as strong as it could be, but it’s mainly setup, and I’m sure things’ll get a lot better.

    Very good first ep!

I’m also thinking Mai wasn’t really injured but just faking it because she saw potential in Hime. Sounds like a logical plan.

    Sumika is pretty sexy.

Seeing the two sides to Mitsuki is pretty wild. She can really put on a good face in front of the customers. Interested to learn more about her and why she’s the way she is.

All in all I liked the first ep and I can definitely say you’ve got me hyped up for this one. Looking forward to watching more!

So instead of Hime being the heroine in shoujo manga, she’s now the protagonist. She will do everything to get Mitsuki to like her. Mostly because of her pride. For now. But we’ll see. Not much to say as right now I still soak it in. I need more.

I also think Mai’s arm isn’t really broken. She just saw a good recruit in HIme and she wants to hold on to her for as long as possible.

I can’t fault Hime for messing up. It’s not like she was given the run down on how to act in character. It’ll probably be a bit difficult at first since she’s already playing a character. Speaking of acting, I imagine Mai snickering to herself in the back overseeing Hime’s screwups 😉 . This aside, I wonder if there’s more to Mitsuki’s aversion of being called “Onee-sama”.

    Nice premiere.

Hm, in the opening it is shown that they have known each other for a long time. I think that Mitsuki remembers, and that makes her angry

Maybe that’s the case, but in that case, wouldn’t Mitsuki have given off a stronger reaction when Hime first saw her at the cafe? I guess being in character would’ve masked such a reaction.
