It’s finally time to learn the truth of the dark fairy.
So Liella moved on the Nationals. Awesome. Wien being the diva she was cut a heel promo saying “I will not accept this!”. Kanon’s like “Brah. The people (of the anime, not the real world) voted for us fair and square. They saw the passion in our performance. If you’re not down with that get off the stage”.
Fun fact. Everyone was so focused on the competition they didn’t realize it’s held on New Year’s Eve.
Kanon couldn’t stop thinking about Wien because despite turning heel on school idol fans before her performance and her soft post-result tantrum she had to know what her deal was. That and the school idol fanbase let her have it on social media for insulting the genre. Wien being gloomy of course meant she posted on Twitter or Instagram. It doesn’t matter which.
I paused the episode and stared at Wien gloomily stare at the “depressing sky” for a couple of minutes. Who knew it’d be the last time I’d be entertained by her. More on this at the end of the post. Thanks to some help translating her tweets Kanon learned the truth about her. She saw her most recent tweet, recognized the stadium and ran over.
Okay. I jumped the gun. The below exchange was the last time I found Wien funny:
Kanon: You weren’t accepted into the Vienna music university your older sister was studying in.
Wien: How did you know about that?
Kanon: Because you tweeted it.
Wien: (d’oh!)
Kanon: I know how you feel. I too failed a big music entrance exam.
Wien: Fool! We are nothing alike. How dare you pity me? You stole my dream from me!
Kanon: What do you mean? Tell me!
NOW!
Wien: Mother and father said if I won Love Live they would recommend me into Vienna.
Kanon: Is that the only reason you competed?
Wien: Of course! Why else would I lower myself to such drivel? Were it not for the uncultured peasants known as school idol fans I would have been victorious. You know full well which of our performances was superior. Now do the right thing and withdraw from the Nationals.
Kanon: No. We won fair and square. The fans resonated more with us. They felt we connected more with them. Our passion was stronger than yours.
Wien: What folly.
The second half of the episode was pretty straightforward. Headmistress called Kanon to her office. Kanon was invited to enroll into the Vienna Music University. What caught her attention wasn’t so much the huge opportunity but the quick glimpse of who she thought was Wien (Most likely her big sis). The gang were worried and rumors spread in Yu(r)igaoka that she would accept and study abroad. Kanon said she’d stay and finish her studies in Yu(r)igaoka. She thought the road to finding her love of music would take her to a big university but through forming Liella she realized she already found that love. The gang were elated…except Chisato. As she thought about it she spotted a sneaky Wien in a corner and gave chase.
Chisato: KANON’S NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A “YOU BETTER TELL ME” FACE WIEN!
Wien: Mother and father said if Kanon went to Vienna I could accompany and become her apprentice. But you heard her right? She said no. The fool. I do not need her to achieve my goal.
Chisato: The big fancy school sees THAT MUCH potential in her?
We ended the episode with Chisato announcing to everyone Kanon should accept the invitation. There’s a brief moment earlier Kanon showed some doubt about declining the invitation despite doing so.
There are some inescapable fates in the world of Love Live. Girls studying abroad is one of them.
So anyway, about Wien. As mentioned in a previous episode what I liked most about her was her teleportation powers, mind games and trolling of Kanon. Now that we know what her goal was (Still not sure why she’s obsessed with Kanon. Probably because the Vienna University were watching her too) I am indifferent. Even if it’s revealed last minute she has some feelings for Kanon I still see her as a less interesting Mia Taylor. Mia did the “musical daughter” thing better.
Good stuff as usual. I assume the next episode will be the last unless we get a surprise 13th. Remember Liella S1 was the only one in the franchise so far with 12 episodes.
Of course I noticed who hugged who during their victory announcement.
The Yuri Empire 
Expected that Wien didn’t win first place, maybe because she alienated a bit too many people during that stream that some didn’t want to vote for her. Then again, winning just for personal matters just won’t end well. Surprising how she goes through the stages of grief rather quickly.
But the way she acted on stage shows that she really lacks sportsmanship, which makes her more polarizing of a character in the franchise compared to Lanzhu.

I should have guessed that’s what you meant when you said Liella winning was predictable.
Lanzhu wanted to become the Ultimate Solo School Idol. Kinda haughty of her but she still wanted to make fans smile. Wien on the other hand only saw Love Live and its fans as stepping stones. We’ll see if she cane redeem herself in the finale but right now she’s lame.

Ah, it’s a shame you don’t like Wien anymore. My interest in her kinda deflated this episode too. (Her name is even Wien ie. Whine).
She just grinds my gears, and not in a good way, especially with her temper tantrum on stage.
I am curious; if you were the writer of this show, what background would you give Wien instead?

She was a fun troll to Kanon. Now she’s just an out of place heel who could be a decent villain in wrestling at best. Maybe she can redeem herself in the finale. That’s a big maybe.
I’m not good at “This is how I have written this character” or “This is how I would have ended the story” stuff. Not my style. Instead of doing that I’d write my own story with my own cast of characters. Don’t ask me what kind of school idol story I’d write though because I don’t know.

Well she has 1 episode left, I’m really hoping they don’t ship her off to Vienna at the end, I want the return of troll Wiene…

I think Wein has cemented herself as the worst Love Live rival to date this episode. I can see her posting a multiple part rant on (insert social media site here) why the school idol fandom doesn’t know what real talent is and calling them a number of horrific slurs.

Wien lost her composure in this ep for sure. She went from a mysterious but very talented school idol, to just someone unwilling to accept that someone is better than her.
I think what stood out the most to me, because it got me thinking shortly after watching the ep, was why was Wien so obsessed with Kanon from the start? There is nothing to say that she knew Kanon was also being scouted for this music school Vienna so it makes her stalking and mind games with Kanon even more puzzling. I’d get it if Wien knew all this time, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I don’t know, her battle with Kanon makes even less sense after the revelations of this ep. Like you said, she’s just a less interesting Mia Taylor. That really sums Wien up in a nutshell.
The rest of the ep was excellent. Liella put on one of, if not the, best show to date and got the attention they deserved. Excited to see them perform on the biggest stage next!
Kanon and Chisato having the same “TELL ME” face was so funny. Those two really are made for each other.
Looking forward to how this all wraps up, be it in 12 or 13 eps. Either way I’ll be sad when it’s over. Until the eventual movie is announced of course.

Being upset you lose is one thing but being a sore loser and blaming supportive fans is not cool. Maybe she can redeem herself in the finale. We shall see.

Congrats to Liella for winning the regionals! Their hard work and passion really paid off and they showcased what being a school idol’s all about.
As for Wien, whatever intimidating aura she had was blown away by how much of a sore loser and jerkwad she turned out to be. I’d bump her down to mid-boss level with that shameful display. Her lineage is like Mia’s except we don’t know if Mia’s family put any ultimatums on her like Wien’s family did.
It was funny that Chisato and Kanon both wanted answers from her. Anyway, Chisato doesn’t want Kanon to pass up this great opportunity to learn music abroad, even if it means they won’t be together for their last year. She is the embodiment of taking chances this season after all. Kanon’s got a weighty decision to make next week, that’s for sure.
On a side note, the Vienna Academy of Music scouted Kanon for her singing talent. Wouldn’t that mean even that an illustrious place like that keeps at least one eye on school idols? If so, then Wien truly is too narrow-minded and underestimates the genre. She has a lot of learning to do.
