Lycoris Recoil Episode 10: Not The Dark Knight

This episode gave me certain movie vibes.

Mizuki and Kurumi's sad goodbye

The first half of the episode was split in two parts. The first was Chisato catching Mizuki and Kurumi researching how they could help with the heart crisis. She announced Lycoris Recoil would be closing its doors and wished the two the best in their future endeavors just like Takina. They did their best to pretend they’re okay with her decision but as the taxi drove away they put all their hopes on Takina. I highly doubt this will be the last we see of them.

Takina in the shadowsTakina meanwhile acted like a good soldier during HQ briefings on their mission to assault Not Joker’s hideout. When she found an opening she interrogated the captured goon who spilled the beans on the arms deal. It’s a classic “skilled short person makes the big mean brute look like a chump” scene. She got him to reveal Alancorp played a large role in the arms deal. Takina knew who the real target was.

By the way about the scenes between NJ and Alan Luthor and the DA Chief, it’s not just for fun I compare Majima, Mr Yoshi and the Chief to The Joker, Lex Luthor and Amanda Waller. The main plot about everyone having their own sense of right and wrong, morally correct and justified gives me so much The Dark Knight vibes. I know other shows or movies brought up these debates but that’s the movie I go to whenever heroes and villains debate on which side’s morals are correct, be they lawful good or chaotic “good”.

Takina confronts Majima about YoshiDuring NJ’s and Not Amanda’s debate about justice (It was the classic “distract the enemy while navigators try to track their location” trick that failed because the DA suck) Takina stepped up as soon as he said “Don’t tell you’re gonna get Blondie to bail your asses out again”. She’s like “I don’t care about you. Give me Luthor!” and he’s like “Nah. You’re boring”.

Mika full of regretAs we saw last episode Chisato put up a strong happy front but inside she’s full of pain and sadness. After closing up shop longtime customers one after another begged them not to go. Chisato was sad her homies and sweetie were gone but happy LycoReco was loved by so many. Before they left Master Mika had a special gift for Chisato seen in the next screen grab. It’s a present he saved for her first step to adulthood but given the circumstances now was as good a time as any. She was grateful to him for teaching her the ways of the warrior, LycoReco, the friends she made and meeting her soul mate. However, when she brought up Luthor the master choked. The time had come to tell her the truth.

Chisato kimonoShort recap. Mika had Luthor implant a super heart into Chisato to expand her lifespan a little longer. The catch was Mika had to promise to turn her into the ultimate killing machine. As we know that didn’t happen. He wondered if he did the right thing keeping it a secret for so long. When he came to love her like a daughter he knew it’s wrong to keep the truth hidden but he saw her love for Papa Luthor was what gave her strength and he didn’t stop her from becoming stronger because of it. Though Chisato was a bit upset she didn’t hold it against either of them. Were she told the truth sooner she may not have become the Femme Vash we know and love. She was given the freedom to make her own destiny. She still loved her dads. Master Mika was proud to be one of her fathers.

Majima's master planBack to the plot. Majima took a page from his idol Heath Ledger’s playbook and basically acted like the Easter Bunny of Doom placing guns across the city encouraging the people to “break down the walls of false peace covering Japan” and do with their lives as they saw fit. Chaotic “good”.

Chisato gets calls from the Chief and Hacker BoyAs Chisato and Master Maki turned on the news she got calls from both Not Amanda and Hacker Boy. The Chief wanted Chisato to take down NJ while HB was like “Don’t do it or Mr Yoshi is toast”. Chisato chose to go rescue Mr Yoshi to hear the truth from him. She and Master Mika counted on Takina and Fuki (and what’s her name) to handle NJ.

Great stuff as always. Action packed episode next time for sure.

    Another exciting ep this week!

Hope that Mizuki has a good time in Vancouver.

The Takina interrogation scene was intense. She’s so ruthless at times.

The classic moral debate about right and wrong. Always something that can keep a conversation going, unfortunately not long enough to track Majima’s location. The DA for all they’re talked up to be, can’t ever seem to get things right.

Nice moment in the cafe with Mika and Chisato. Plus Chisato looked amazing in that kimono. Would be nice if Takina got to see her wearing it at some point.

Majima is really going to get the whole city riled up now with his plan going into action. As if the stakes weren’t high enough already, they just got set higher. We’re in for an action packed final few eps here!

    The calm before the storm.
Majima had everyone in the palm of his hand with that plan of his. Free guns for everyone!
And let the inevitable chaos reign.
But before that, I really like the moment between Chisato and Mika. Really touching and pulls my heartstrings.

  3. Man, this show just keeps one-upping itself every week! This episode had a little of everything and I think it hit all the points brilliantly. The first half was bittersweet with Chisato basically trying to send everyone away so they wouldn’t have to be faced with her impending doom. It was really clear that she’s not actually as genki as she portrays herself all the time, and even she can get lonely. It was nice to see how all their patrons loved them though and are hoping they won’t close up shop for good. It really drove home just how peaceful of an environment Chisato has built for others with Cafe LycoRyco. I don’t believe we’ve seen the last of it.

It was so great seeing Takina back at the DA, but in contrast to her original attitude, it was clear that she didn’t care about recognition or being the ‘perfect soldier’. She had one goal and one goal only; to save her beloved by any means. Seeing her interrogate that big goon was such a great moment. She really gave no f**ks about anything but answers. I really like dark Takina. I believe in her resolve. It was funny to me that she and NJ agreed they don’t care about the other, and basically said just stay out my way and we’ll have no beef.

The second half was just a bunch of sweetness. It was such a heartwarming moment to see Mika and Chisato bonding like the father and daughter they’ve basically always been. Even when he told her the truth and she had every right to be mad at him and Yoshi, she still chose to forgive them because ultimately they’re her dads and she loved them. They’re not perfect by any means, but they’re still precious to her. Which is why naturally, she was going to choose to go after Yoshi when given the choice. Looks like they’re gearing up for some serious action next week, and I can’t wait!

Also, I’m certain that’s not the last we’ll see of Kurumi and Mizuki, because their faces said it all. They don’t want to abandon Chisato until the very end, because she’s dear to them. All of them are family and it’s wonderful to see that dynamic. Good stuff, as always.

Everything from Chisato feeling lonely without the gang and her sweetie around to her Father-daughter moment with Master Mika were excellent.

Takina’s laser focused on saving her beloved blonde. Get in the way of her mission of love and you will regret it. So good.

Best of luck to our heroines and Mika in their upcoming battles.

Best believe Kurumi and Mizuki will be back to help eventually.

Yoshi being held hostage only makes me wonder that Majima is brought as being Chisato’s final boss. It’s obvious that he grants ability regardless of they are good and not, but I guess this gives me the hope that Chisato will make it and the possibility for a happy ending.

I like how Takina acts, but hopefully Mizuki and Kurumi help her in the end. Also, Chisato looks good in that kimono. Still, I can understand why Mika didn’t want to train Chisato to become a killer given how much of a precious cinnamon roll she is. Hopefully they can Majima in time.
