Strike Witches 3: Road to Berlin Episode 8: Foggy Hearts

As mentioned last time this was the episode I’m sure many Yuri Witches fans were waiting for. Let’s see if they could equal or surpass what we’ve seen thus far.

We joined Eila and Sanya on patrol around the forest Barkhorn’s team kicked major Neuroi booty. As Eila discussed her big plans for Saturnus Day (Some kind of Christmas. Not sure if it’s related to the Roman god Saturn) the forest got really foggy. Sanya had strong senses like a radar and detected the source, a Neuroi. It retreated deep into the fog.

Due to this unexpected turn of events the higher ups ordered a postponement of the Berlin attack. Barkhorn was furious and Mina tried calming her down but she was just as frustrated deep down. Sanya saw this and took immediate action, requesting to form a team to hunt the fog Neuroi. Eila (of course), RAMBO and Shizuka would join her.

Before heading out the team had special navigation training across difficult to see terrain. RAMBO and Shizuka had trouble while Eila and Sanya would rely on their soul mate bond to guide them.

For the sake of the plot (aka because the plot said so) their bond was tested and they failed because Eila thought she saw Sanya get sneak attacked and tried to protect her while Sanya didn’t see anything but the premature shooting alarmed the Neuroi. That and it looked like Sanya was pushing herself. Afterward Sanya had a bone to pick with the Neuroi (Revenge for her homeland) and wanted to take it down at all costs so she requested a rematch.

Eila asked RAMBO and Shizuka for advice on how to make up with her girlfriend but not much came of it except some free gun measuring. As if that weren’t bad enough Sanya would later take her off the mission.

Throughout the episode Eila worked on a special decoration for the Saturnus Day tree when Mina came to help her understand Sanya’s feelings. Then as the sun rose she figured out what the Neuroi did to mess with her senses last time and rushed off to help Sanya.

Several Neuroi have used the “Double Team” surprise attack this season. Sanya realized Eila was right all along.

All better.

I thought the Strike Witches would have to go all “Screw the higher ups. We’re taking back Berlin ourselves!” as the episode had discussions about taking orders throughout the episode but nope. Only Eila defied Sanya’s orders to rescue her and the others. After the for Neuroi’s defeat the fog faded and the attack on Berlin was back on.

Their S2 episode remains the best of the three but we were reminded of how sweet their love is here so it’s all good. Next time it’s Mina’s episode. Will we get another dramatic scene between Mio and her? Probably not but would be nice to hope.
