OG’s Summer 2019 Halftime Impressions

I already posted my Summer 2019 first impressions of shows I’m not covering weekly HERE. Time to continue by checking out how the shows I picked are doing at the halfway point, meaning most of them being 6 episodes in.

Note: I won’t include leftovers like Carole & Tuesday, Star Twinkle PreCure and Aikatsu Friends Season 2. I’m enjoying all of them.

Homare X Shion.jpg

I ship these two. Homare X Shion.

First up is Sounan Desu ka? The first of the two “Ecchicational” shows this season. So far it’s been the same, Homare teaching her fellow castaways survival techniques, being scrounging for food, building up fires, acquiring water and, one I am not personally fond of, hunting. The most recent episode was personally discomforting but the show has been pretty good so far. Homare often having to undress with the other girls slowly but surely following suit, except Shion who is the pampered ojou-sama of the group, though she does her best when emotionally capable/motivated. As the above image shows I ship her with Homare.

Dumbbell nan Kilo Moteru Bikini 2

What a wonderful beach episode it was.

Next up is Dumbbell nan Kilo Materu? The show so far has surpassed my expectations. Some viewers got the wrong idea about this show being a bodybuilding anime, meaning the goal was to become muscle mistresses. While that is Ayaka’s goal it’s played more for laughs than taken seriously. Instead the show is about sexy girls working out, keeping themselves in shape and teaching viewers very useful exercising techniques at the gym and home along with some fun shenanigans thrown here and there. Some I was unaware of. It motivated to exercise again. It’s a super sexy, hilarious and educational show. One of my Top 3 of the season. So far it’s not a yuri show but it isn’t a het harem either. Even if it were Mr Macho Man is too busy being an inspirational Real Man’s Man to noticed the ladies initially being attracted to him. They too stop caring after noticing this themselves. No complaints here.

Zina and Putin.jpg

Zina and The Lord of Darkness. He may be evil incarnate but his exaggerated physique here is impressive.

The last member of the fitness crew, the Russian Bombshell Zina, debuted in episode 6 and as expected she fits right in with the cast.

Moving right along we have Joshikousei no Mudazukai. I said this during my first impressions and it has not changed, when the show isn’t focused on “Baka” it’s amazing. Time and again this has proven to be the case with Baka having more of a punchline role, as it should be. The recent three episodes introduced or expanded three lovely maidens.

Majime.jpg

Majime.

First we have Majime. We got glimpses of her here and there but in episode 4 we were properly introduced to her. To get the attention of the person she likes she overthinks things and does hilariously weird stuff. She’s also a chick magnet but again her eyes are fixated on one person.

Lily and Majime.jpg

Lily and Majime.

Episode 5 gifted us with “Lily”. Take a wild guess what she likes most in this world. She likes being a flirt and getting comfy with…you know. However, she has an Achilles heel, an allergic reaction if you will. One person in particular gave her a hard time (not the teacher). It’s not hard to figure out why this person gave Lily a hard time. BTW, no, Lily isn’t the person Majime is attracted to.

Loli and Majo.jpg

Loli and Majo. I hope their story continues.

Episode 6 introduced “Majo”, the “creepy girl” archetype of the class. Guess what her favorite movie genre is. She understandably had a difficult time socializing with others but as the above image shows she may have found her soul mate.

One thing all three of these girls have in common is their lives were forever changed thanks to the two Best Girls:

Chuuni.jpg

Chuuni.

Her nickname isn’t “Chuuni” but she’s so a chuuni.

And most importantly the best of the best.

Robo

Robo the Sage.

Blesseth be Robo.

RE;Stage Dream Days duo

Sayu X Mana.

Lastly we have the personal surprise of the season, RE:Stage: Dream Days. As I said before the show’s main story is standard idol fare, group of girls coming together to form a group and entering an idol competition. What has made it special so far are the characters. While they fall under familiar archetypes they manage to stand out from the crowd in one way or another. First up are the main couple Mana and Sayu. Mana is like the Saki (Mahjong) of the idol world: Very talented, having an amazing older sister but was afraid to go for it. She needed an extra push from her soul mate. Saki fans will immediately recognize the setup. This brings us to Sayu, Mana’s Nodoka essentially. Lite Tsundere who has a couple of secrets that are slowly being revealed.

Kae X Kasumi

Kae X Kasumi.

Second couple, Kae and Kasumi. Kasumi is the token “cool girl” of the group while Kae is a descendant of Tony Stark.

Mizuha X Mii.jpg

Mizuha X Mii.

Lastly there’s the older members, Mizuha and Mii. Mii has a longer name but everyone calls her Mii for obvious reasons. They’re like the Nozomi and Nico of the group except Mizuha doesn’t grope other girls as she is content with one. She has the same wavelength though.

The only change to my schedule is my dropping Fire Force. Why? Not enough Maki and the rest of the cast don’t do much for me. I replaced it with Kanata no Astra. Why? Quitterie.

That brings us to my Summer 2019 Power Rankings so far (Excluding leftovers):

  1. Symphogear XV
  2. Dumbbell nan Kilo Materu?
  3. Joshikousei no Mudazukai
  4. Machikado Mazoku
  5. RE:Stage Dream Days
  6. GRANBELM
  7. Sounan Desu ka?
  8. Kanata no Astra
  9. Magical-Senpai

I actually got back to Joshikousei, while still not one of my top shows this season, it definitely does provide some good fun~ her name is “yami” which is a common LN way to refer to “darkness”. IIRC it’s her actual name too, and not a nick. Because the teacher refers to her by it. Could be wrong on that though.

Sounan desuka continues being hectic fun~

RE Stage is one of my three favorite shows this season~ Only being beat out by Symphogear. It’s just so very good!!

    Symphogear
    ReStage
    Machikado
    Sounan desuka
Granbelm – Accelerator (can’t choose between the two…)
    Cop Craft
    High School Girls
    Yamishibai

    Ongoing Rankings:
    1. Star Twinkle Precure
    2. Kiratto Prichan

I’ve been shipping Homare with the glasses girl since ep 1. And out of the three “normal” girls, she seems to be getting accustomed the fastest to their new lifestyle (gutting rabbits and brandishing stone knifes).

Joshikousei no Mudazukai is getting better and better with each episodes. I love how even the OP features a lovestruckt Majime gazing over the Robo of her life. I hope we get more shipworthy situations between Majo and Rori, and that zombie movie have not scarred our poor girl for life.
And we need more of Yamai, and her fantasies regarding her elven wife.

    In no particular order:

Re:Stage: Thousand Kill Angel x Dark Shadow Princess is the best ship. Dark Shadow Princess is best girl. Fun show overall.

Wasteful Days: Headcanon: Baka is a trans man, but doesn’t realize his identity yet. Lily’s guy’s-are-icky detector notices this. Majo x Loli and Majime x Yami are cute, even if Manjime doesn’t realize this yet.

Dumbbells (Not Baka and Shamiko, the other kind): Selling point for me remains the bisexual muscle fetishist. Too bad she missed the arm wrestling competition, because she would have been soaked by that finish.

Are you lost?: I’m glad I’m not stuck on that island with them. Their main food source so far has been inedible to me, so I would have been stuck with bugs and goo until rabbit day. My initial ship ideas aren’t working as well now, so I’ll have to redo that one.

Isekai Cheat Magician: Possibly the most generic isekai I’ve ever seen, I’m only continuing with it because there’s yuri potential. Battle fetishist villain was a plus.

O Maidens: Pervy girls are always a plus.

Hensuki: Same as above. The sadist and masochist need to forget about cakey and hook up with each other.

Astra: The good: Positive intersex rep. The bad: Girl becoming cuter by taking off her glasses.

Revised opinion of Isekai Cheat Magician after episode 5: If they keep doing what they’ve been doing, there’s a nice yuri ship there. Episode 2 had early potential, but 3-4 didn’t build on it much. Episode 5 expanded on it enough that unless they actively screw it up, I’m happy with it.

Lily could sense Baka being uber het compared to the other girls. Your headcannon is a nice alternative.

Because Angel X Princess are the cooliest.

It’s been established in episode 7 that Homare has a yuri harem. Shion is #1 harem girl.

Quittore is all I need to keep me going in Astra.

As I usually tell cirno9fan hope the other shows you picked please you in the long run.

I’d go with Lily having a gross detector over a guy-and-het-girl detector, but I’m sticking with my explanation.

Yeah, definitely a Homare harem. That was clearly an event that gave you an easy choice on which route to go down.

The 4koma REALLY short Re:Stage afterstory manga has shoujo ai as main tag, so no wonder that this is a surprise this season.

Granbelm is obvious because of the subtitle.

    SGXV is number one.

Machikado goes the same obvious yuri direction as Granbelm.

Are you lost?: When anime ends, I read the manga from the beginning, because it has ecchi as main tag.

Dumbbell is really funny and ecchi.

    Top season 6:

    SGXV

    Granbelm
    Machikado

Have fallen behind with Sounan Desu Ka mostly because there are so many shows I am watching, but I will catch up probably soon. But Dumbbell is surprisingly very enjoyable and thankfully Machio didn’t create a harem, Still, the characters are enjoyable.

Re;stage is surprisingly a very enjoyable watch, probably more compared to the idol anime that aired in the same season last year, Ongaku Shoujo. Having only 6 girls in the main cast does wonders than a big one. Also, the pairings are quite obvious, but enjoyable. Kae, Kasumi and Minori are nice additions to the cast. Kae is probably the most relatable due to being technologically advanced with her gadgets as seen with her smartphone and idol rating goggles.

Survivor Girl episodes are short so it shouldn’t be hard to catch up.

      Dumbbell has been a gift.

It is gayer and more upbeat than Ongaku Shoujo TV, yes. OS was still good though.
Kae is a precious super genius, Kasumi her cool girlfriend and Mii is Mii, Mii.

Sounan desu ka: The killing part was hard to watch. I keep reminding myself they need the meat to stay strong and healthy. Overall I’m enjoying the show a lot. I ship Homare and Shion too.
Dumbbell: This show is a blessing. The beach episode was so good. Zina is a wonderful addition.
JK no Mudazukai: This show keeps getting better and better. Thanks to Robo and Chuuni. New characters have been fun so far. Majime should confess already she’s so in love. Lily maybe has a crush on Majime but she doesn’t know yet. Give Chuuni her princess.
Re: Stage DD: I love this show. They paired up nicely. They found their soulmate and stay together in every episode. Pony Canyon knows what yuri fans want.
Magical Senpai: I’m enjoying this show so far. The usual Ecchi anime with hilarious (failed) magic.

It’s not easy to rank them because they are all so good and funny. High quality anime. But here goes
    1. Symphogear XV
    2. Machikado Mazoku
    3. Joshikousei no Mudazukai
    4. Dumbbell
    5. RE:Stage DD
    6. Grandbelm
    7. Sounan Desu ka
    8. Magical-Senpai

After the latest episode we can agree Homare legit has a yuri harem. Shion remains her #1 of course.

      Blesseth be the fitness girls.

I have a feeling Mudazukai will stick to shipping, which is fine for a show like this. We got some wonderful lesbians so it’s all good.

Thank you Godoka and Kumaria-Sama for the precious gift that is Dream Days.

Sexy clumsy magician shenanigans is sexy.

I love how Re:Dream Stage gently coupled all the girls right away. Angel X Princess is wonderful (I can imagine what they spent “all night doing” after their music session ^^) Saya and Mana are soulmates. And I ship the charming new cuties Yukari X Haruka too.

Joshikousei is lovely. I too was annoyed at Baka in the beginning, but now she doesn’t bother me at all any more. She has a central and important role: to be the target for Robo’s brilliant comments, to bring out the adorable, outraged, blushing side of Loli (I laugh at the riding on her shoulder invitation every time), and now to bring Majo and Loli together (oh how I ship those two, such a surprise pairing… although I ship Majo with her sweet, sweet Kohaku too). And Chuuni’s elf princess fantasies are delightful.

Dumbbell girls are sexy, but they can’t compete with the first two series ^^

I’m also enjoying Tsuujou Okaa-san, and I think Wise should make cute little Porter her permanent comforting hug pillow.

RE;Stage is the gayer of the two whereas Mudazukai is the funniest show of the season.

You would have thought otherwise were Dumbbell gayer I bet.

Isekai series aren’t my forte. They need something extra or specific to get my attention.

Hihi, no doubt I’d like the dumbbell girls even more if they were gayer… But I think the ultra-moe dream stage girls and the robo-majo-kohaku-loli cuteness would still win ^^

I also find most isekai series a waste of potential, and boring. Porter seems to be enough to carry Tsuukou Okaa-san for me though!

I tried Okaa-san Online hoping for some lighthearted momcom, but wound up with some thinly veiled momcon.Unfortunately the main character was Maa-kun and not Maa-chan.

From what I saw, WisexPorter could be cute though.

  9. So many great shows, and ships, this season indeed.

I do find it slightly amusing you might’ve dropped Fire Force for Kanata no Astra, due to Quitterie, just before Fire Force properly introduces Princess Hibana, and especially before Hibana gets character development…

One gay princess or dark skinned beauty isn’t enough to get me back. Do keep in mind I have dropped het shows before in spite of a potential lesbian character or gorgeous black beauty. I’m not watching DanMachi Season 2 after all.

Offtopic leftover Aikatsu Friends: Am I blind, or why don´t I find Aikatsu Friends S1 in your anime list?

As for S2, someone wrote that the yuri level is an 11 this season. Does that mean that S1 is a 10?
