YMC #24: Tenbin wa Hana to Asobu

I have been on a roll with reviewing yuri manga lately. I guess I felt that I haven’t done these in a while so I went full force and posting review after review. Why stop here? Let’s keep it going with Tenbin wa Hana to Asobu.

Tenbin_01_000Number of Volumes: 2. 12 chapters.

Genres: Supernatural, Comedy, Yuri, Romance, School Life.

Plot Summary: Lotus Girls’ Academy. A school whose aim is to educate young girls to be pure and modest. Youko is a new transfer student here, and immediately takes a liking to Shuu, who shows her around the school. However, Youko discovers a big secret about Shuu… she’s a vampire (not exactly)! Youko then does her best to be the best friend she can be and help Shuu protect her secret… whether Shuu likes it or not! But how does Shuu really feel about Youko… and why does her blood taste so different? And to what lengths will Youko go to help Shuu?

This is not a spoiler because it plays a major role in the plot. See, Shuu has Vampire Syndrome, meaning she has to periodically drink human blood. That’s not all. Despite having a feminine appearance, Shuu is neither male or female. Thus, when she turns 18, her official gender will be determined by the amount of blood she has consumed from one gender over the other. I guess, in a way, this decision has both coming of age and romantic repercussions for Shuu.

The main cast

-Shuu is a faux madame. she’s an elegant ojou-sama to her peers but a tsundere to the people she trusts.

-Youko’s a lovable, energetic girl with a one-track mind. She’s by no means an airhead, just incredibly focused when something or someone grabs her attention. Oh, and she has superhuman senses.

-Misora’s a devoted fangirl who is both in love with Shuu and reserved at the same time due to how much she respects Shuu.

-Aika and Rika are pretty much a confirmed couple. Aika is the self-confident haughty girl with a kind heart. She also likes to make bad puns. Rika’s pretty much her sidekick and foil.

-The Doctor’s a wise goof who helps Youko and Shuu while occasionally playfully teasing Shuu.

There is little else I can say about this one as it is a pretty straightforward comedy that relies on its gimmick to grab readers’ attention. It’s an easy read and while it is nothing impressive, it is not a bad manga either. Heck, the gimmick does its job of creating some tension (Minor tension, but tension nonetheless).

What would you say, are there many “yuri actions” involved other than maybe bloodsucking? I started reading this some years agao I think, but never finished it, probably because it wasn’t finished at that time. Thinking back now, it was a fun read, but I think I’m looking for romance too much, to be satisfied with a light yuri comedy only.
