YMC #12: Blue Friend

This next manga I’m about to cover is an interesting one as it is a spiral of many emotions in the span of 7 chapters+ 1 bonus epilogue chapter. It is one of those comics where the romance does play an important part, but it is more about seeking the key bearer and accepting the key to unlock the door out of the darkness…and you just so happen to fall in love with said bearer. This is Blue Friend.

Plot Summary: Blue Friend tells the story of Ayumu, an energetic youth with high spirits (Who does have a brain, surprisingly.) and aspiring softball player, and Misuzu, a seemingly cold bishoujo, who has legitimate reasons for being angry at the world, what with being bullied by jealous girls and suffering from androphobia. They happen to meet and slowly become tight, entering a clyclone full of emotions spinning around the two. However, things get even worse when an unknown conspirator is after Misuzu and plans to use the past to seal her in the darkness forever. It’s up to Ayumu, the key bearer to find a way to free Misuzu…but can she?

As I mentioned, the manga is a basket full of poison apples, waiting for innocent victims to chew on them and send them to a hospital with a case of emotional stress. None are safe, as angst, fear, obsession and secrets to be unraveled are but a few of the emotions that await. While the themes in the story may seem familiar to literature aficionados, what makes BF a worthy read is how it presents the emotions and makes readers empathize with Ayumu and Misuzu. Ayumu’s reactions to Mizusu’s actions and the pain Misuzu feels deep down as she continuously shows difficulty in revealing the truth to the one person she has cared for in a very long time all the while being very possessive of Ayumu.

This manga is not for the weak of heart, as it is not bloody but still has some intense moments all thanks to the art style and excellent mood setting atmosphere. Again, only 7 chapters. The 8th one is more of a prolonged epilogue but definitely should not be skipped either as it provides closure. Whether it’s good or bad is up to you to find out.

Depending on what kind of person you are and your mood, Blue Friend will either make you feel a lot or just be another angst-ridden soap. Either way, it’s definitely worth a look, yuri fan or not.

    Azuma best gurl, yes.
I read this one thanks to your review, i try to avoid things with the topics this one touches.
This was screaming “abandonment issues” all over the place, i had my fears about a ‘bad ending’ (you know, some ‘yandere action’). Fortunatly, Misuzu got over her issues with the help from Ayumu until she could stand up by herself but most important: she decided not to continue depending on Ayumu and move on. The girls continued with their lifes. Sweet memories and such.
A good read and a satisfying ending ~
