YMC #2: Heart-Pounding Excitement at Mononoke Girls’ Academy

Genre: Yuri, comedy, drama, school life, supernatural.

Number of Volumes: 2, 15 chapters.

Warning! Includes NSFW material.

Plot summary: While passing through a cemetery on a rainy morning, Amano Arare somehow arrives in the world of mononoke at an all-girls boarding school. As a human, she is in danger of being violated or even eaten by the various youkai there. Luckily, with the help of Kiri (a nekomata) and Pero (an akaname), Arare is able to not only survive, but become a student under a false youkai identity.

While HPE is another romantic comedy at heart, unlike LFG, manages to gracefully incorporate relatable ideas and melodramatic plot into a rather inane story. This really adds a lot of substance to the plot and the silly humor, which can actually already stand on its own. This manga will have you both laughing and invested in the leading lady’s dilemma of working out how to make her relationship with the girl she’s fallen in love with work.

Like I said, it has an interesting way of tackling the issue of how far one is willing to go/what a person is willing to do in order to be with the one they love, albeit a bit silly in the sense of what exactly our heroine has to do. I also commend the story forĀ  its proper buildup to Arare’s decision. Nicely done writers.

What I also liked is the supernatural side of the manga. Most of the monsters range from well known to mostly obscure mythological creatures that are obscure to a Westerner such as myself but well known to fans of Japanese myth and folklore. Of course the addition of spicy yuri goodness is a plus. As I stated earlier, this is a romantic comedy so while the main romance is captivating enough, the rest of the manga’s humor does its job well providing silly antics to amuse its readers. I mean look at the above page with the Akaname (Tongue demon). Expect much quirkiness from the demons and how they use their natural traits. Oh, and of course, the obvious reference:

In conclusion: Japanese monsters+romance+ecchi yuri goodness=a good time for those who don’t mind some T&A in their products.

I just reread this one, i agree with you is a pleasent manga. I loved the fact Arare didn’t change her decision and i guess you could say ‘all’s well that ends well’ but that chapter 15 wasn’t really an ending, was it?
Oh well, who would take a manga like that seriously? It was great, anyway. When i first read it, all the bizarre gurls gave me the creeps but now i like them all. And those side stories with Sensei and her lover, and Beni’s back mouth, hahaha, they were great.
