Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night: Episode 4: The Next Vid

With the quartet all together it was time for JELEE’s first meeting as a team.

Sunflower Dolls interview

We began with Kano watching a Sunflower Dolls interview where her old crew announced plans to start a comeback tour. She wasn’t the least bit pleased with this development.

Kiui on video call with her crewLater the gang celebrated a solid debut for their first music video compared to Kano’s old black screen songs. Mei tried to work on the next vid but got stuck. It was time for the tech wiz to share her expertise. Kano wanted to meet Kiui in person but the pink one was too nervous. Yoru vouched for her but I like to think seeing Kano being extra chummy with Yoru gave Kiui the idea to suggest a meetup at Kano’s pad.

Kiui meets Kano and Mei in personTo Yoru’s surprise Kiui told their new home girls the truth about her being a high school dropout. Kano could relate while Mei saw it as an evenly balanced team. Remember Mei and Yoru still go to school.

Thinking about the scandalWe’ll have to wait and see before learning the truth about the Sunflower Dolls scandal. There’s definitely more to it than an alleged backstage brawl. No surprise the loudest of the trio was somehow involved. Based on first impressions she oozes “bitch energy”.

Mei collected Kano's airMei once again reminded me of my spiritual sister as seen here collecting her oshi’s air as her first objective upon entering Kano’s abode. Bless Mei.

Kano blushingThings got a bit chaotic with everyone getting rowdy so Yoru calmed the mood by sharing Kinder-esque candies. Unsurprisingly Yoru got a jellyfish. To commemorate the occasion she gifted it to Kano as a good luck charm for the Team JELEE leader. Her reaction was delightful. Like Girls Band Cry I hope this show does not fail me.

Girls disagree with Kano's planned scheduleThe group meeting appeared to be going well but before and during it Kano looked to be a little impatient. This was made clear when she unveiled her planned schedule going forward with the first order of business being to upload the 2nd JELEE video by Wednesday. The gang didn’t like her not discussing it with them as it clashed with their own busy lives, two girls with school and Kiui with VTubing. Kiui asked why the video HAD to be uploaded by Wednesday but Kano couldn’t bring herself to explain why and stormed off. Yoru wondered if she’s pushy too when Mei recalled Sunflower Dolls’ comeback tour starting on Wednesday. Kano’s actions suddenly made sense.

Mion, Kano's sisterThey heard footsteps and hoped it’s Kanon but we’re actually introduced to her older sister Mion, the real owner of the apartment. After some amusing bawling from Mion Mei took the opportunity to ask about Kano in hopes of better understanding her.

Yukine Hayakawa, Kano's MomThe reason Kano initially wanted to become an idol was to please her mother, the Sunflower Dolls’ producer, Yukine Hayakawa. She’s so diligent and devoted to pleasing mom’s wishes she probably rubbed her ex crewmates the wrong way. Then the scandal happened and things fell apart afterward. For a while she’s quite depressed until Team JELEE became official and the sun shined on her life once more. Perhaps for the first time in a long while.

Two things:

1: Why do I get the feeling they’re doing away with the dead parents trope and replacing it with a divorced parents trope?

2: Cultured fans want more female producers/coaches/commanders/managers etc. Why is it when we do get them they’re usually either side-characters or antagonists? Damn you insecure fanboys.

After a successful all-nighterLong story short they talked it over, revealed their weakest moments to each other (though Yoru’s has a bit more hopeful. Again do not break my dreams writers), made up and agreed to pull an all-nighter and finish the video that very night. To their surprise it paid off as the 2nd video was even more successful than the 1st.

Very good stuff as always.

  1. I was glad to get some deeper insight on Kano’s past, and now that we have, things definitely fit better into place. I’m glad that the others were able to learn all of that and understand her better, because I think it only served to strengthen their group. Though I hadn’t expected them to pull an all-nighter and finish in one go. That’s dedication! I’m happy to see it paid off though, and I have high hopes for them.

I hadn’t expected the producer to be her mother, but now that also puts the drama into better perspective. Definitely curious to find out what the full story about that scandal is, but for now, I don’t really like that cheerful girl much.

Finally, I’m right there with you. I hope the writers will give us what we want by the end, as I definitely see the potential. Good stuff again!

They make a great team. Glad they understand Kano better and showed how capable they are working together.

Interesting reveals along with more curiosity about what exactly happened that caused such a scandal.

That girl didn’t give a good first impression.

Please do not let us down.

Heh. Kanno’s mom reminds me of Tomoyo’s mom from Cardcaptor Sakura. Makes me wonder if she’s a Friend of Mara as well…

THis show is really hitting the spot for me. Each one of our heroines gave up something they loved because of the expectations of others. The story is really about them using this music/art collab to become the best version of themselves. JELEE are rediscovering those parts of themselves that they thought they could do without, to “fit in.”

Also, Kiui’s pink hair is flawless! Does she have a colorist? Did she do it herself? If so, second career right there.

We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.

Very good assessment Miss AJ. That’s an accurate description of what all four are fighting for in JELEE.

Very good question. Her pink hair is beautiful.

It’s interesting to learn more about Kano’s family, which can explain why she wants to have the video out by Wednesday so it can overshadow Sunflower Dolls. It can explain Kano’s sense of urgency.

Mion an alcoholic, not too surprising despite her pretty looks. Also funny how she seems to have a liking for Kiui.

Still, should be interesting to see how the video went viral.
