The 2016 Yuri Anime Awards Results

Another potential contender in the 2017 awards, Riko Saikawa.

And with that another enjoyable Yuri Anime Awards ceremony has come to a close. Thanks again to both and new fans for showing their support for their favorite gals and couples. Let’s find out who were the victors.

WARNING! MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ANIME AND VISUAL/KINETIC NOVELS AHEAD.

First let us begin with the music awards. For those wondering why songs from Amanchu, Magical Girl Raising Project and the like did not make the cut, it’s because I was already pushing it with 10 nominations. If I went gung-ho there would have probably been 16 nominations and it would have been overkill. I learned my lesson in regards to “too many choices”.

Anyway the Best OP of 2016 goes to Izetta: The White Witch’s Cross the Line.

The Best ED of 2016 goes to Flip Flappers’ Flip Flap Flip Flap.

fine-and-izetta-longing-for-one-another

The winner of the Best Confession of 2016 goes to Izetta: The White Witch’s Magic Broom Ride followed by Flip Flappers’ Interdimensional Love in 2nd and Euphonium 2’s Euphonium Blockbuster in 3rd.

dark-mimi

2016 Best Antagonist (Since not all these adversaries were truly evil) goes to Flip Flappers’ Dark Mimi. Definitely an intimidating adversary when enraged. 2nd place goes to the Izetta: the White Witch’s avenger “Sophie” and 3rd is the somewhat complex yet extremely dangerous Swim Swim from Magical Girl Raising Project.

mio-kusekai-in-all-her-glory

The Best Hunter of 2016 was KEIJO!!!!!!!!’s Mio Kusakai: gorgeous foreigner, gifted keijo athlete and proud lesbian who would happily treat a lucky lady to a day like no other human alive ever could. If there are no takers she’ll give ladies who catch her eye a “preview”. Illya 3rei!’s Kuro Einzbern came in 2nd with her badassery and mad “mana consumption” skills. 3rd goes to Brave Witches’ Countess. Think of her as Mio Kusakai lite. She’s also one of the few Witches to wear pants and not long stockings.

Next up is the Digital Warfare category. After thinking about it a bit I realized a 2nd round will not be necessary.

First up is Starlight Vega as we find out which lovely lady in Aria’s harem was chosen as the favorite.

Aria X Melody.jpg

The BFF Melody came out on top over the seductive beauty Lyria and the mature appeal ice queen Scherza.

Next up are the Road Queens. Who were elected the fairest of American Yuri Road Trip experts?

Highway Blossoms Amber and Marina Campfire

Why Highway Blossoms’ Amber and Marina who bested Love, Guitars and the Nashville Skyline’s Amanda and Juliet.

Asuka from Nurse Love Addiction certainly had an…interesting journey in her first year of nursing college. Let’s find out which of her four suitors was chosen by fans as the favorite.

asuka-and-sakuya-in-a-predicament

Arguably the most canon of the four, Sakuya! Nao came in 2nd followed by Miss Kaede in 3rd.

Next is the couple who impressed “plreaders” most in Part 1 of Ne No Kami: The Two Princess Knights of Kyoto.

Nenokami

It’s Ruka X Shinonome!

Next up is the favorite New Generation couple from A Kiss for the Petals‘ new series.

Aya and Ai.jpg

The indigo haired twin sisters Aya and Ai prevailed over Nagisa and Rina in 2nd along with Hazuki and Manami in 3rd.

Last but not least in the Digital Warfare battles we have the favorite couple from Kindred Spirits on the Roof

Yuna X Hina.jpg

Yuna and Hina! 2nd place went to my personal favorite duo of Youka and Aki while 3rd was awarded to Seina and Miki.

And now, the moment everyone has been waiting for. The results of the Yuritopia Classic. Before that though. Let us discuss the stories throughout the tournament.

yohane-being-awesome-as-usual

The first big surprise of the tournament was one Yohane making it all the way to the World Title Finals, BARELY besting the two gay Aqours juggernauts Riko and Mari in Round 1 and then dominating Round 2. I guess being one of, if not the most entertaining member of Aqours helped her out big time. While I too am a huge Yohane fan I was very much surprised by her getting as far as she did. Let’s face facts. Compared to Riko and Mari, she didn’t ooze as much gayness though she had some moments, or rather vibes, with her popular fellow first year Zuramaru.

Think about it ladies and gentlemen. Yohane COULD HAVE BEEN the 2016 Yuri World Champion. Amazing.

Money shot 2

The other big surprise was the elimination of the leegendary tag team of Haruka and Michiru in the 2nd round. Perhaps it was due to them losing some steam in the 2nd half of Sailor Moon Crystal 3, mening they didn’t snuggle as much. While their status as one of yuridom’s greatest Tag Teams will remain intact they sadly didn’t impress fans around here enough to warrant more than qualifying to the 2nd round.

Having said all that, the biggest story in the tournament was a hard fought war between two heavy hitting couples, both funny enough featured a redhead. 2016 did feature several lesbian redheads like Pandora’s Nene, Anne Happy’s Hibiki and even Aqours’ Riko to name a few alongside the big two (Riko’s as red as a red cabbage so she counts). Anyway no matter what category the two competed in they always went all-out against each other, always coming in 1st and 2nd. They were so evenly matched that they dominated whenever the other team wasn’t around to push them to their limits. These two teams were of course…

papika-x-cocona-in-bedfine-x-izetta-in-bed

Flip Flappers’ PapiCoco and Izetta: The Last Witch’s FinéZetta. Time again the two went the distance but in the end there could only be one…

Fine and Izetta loving each other.jpg

It was a clean sweep for the victors. They are the 2016 Yuri Tag Team Champions, Finé is the 2016 Yuricontinental Champion and Izetta is the 2016 Yuri World Champion. Izetta also won the 2016 Michiru Magazine EuroYuri Tournament.

When one stops to think about it their victory is well deserved. While the show got a mixed reception one thing is for certain, many in the Yuri Nation agree that the best part of Izetta: The Last Witch was Finé and Izetta’s love story. What started as two girls from different world meeting and becoming bestest friends continued years later when the two reunited under…interesting circumstances and it was quickly made clear that nothing had changed between them. In fact their bond grew stronger until the truth could only be denied by the usual naysayers. Only one thing was missing to make this a perfect lesbian love story but even without it it is still a great one. I still stand by my words that alongside Flip Flappers, Izetta: The White Witch is destined to become a future yuri classic.

And that’s it. Te 2016 Yuri Anime Awards are in the books. Here’s hoping 2017 will deliver more yuri goodness (Animated, drawn and digital) that will stand the test of time.

Most of my vote won. Or in second place, so freakin happy. And even though Yohane didn’t win I’m still proud of her.

Yuna and hina are best couple! Also, Flip Flappers deserved more. 😐

While Izetta wasn’t that great of a show to me I will agree in saying Izetta and Fine were the sole highlight of the show. Those two were the only reason I even kept watching it. Though I felt Cocona and Papika had a deeper bond and we saw better relationship and character building between these two I won’t complain with Izetta and Fine winning.

All worthy winners, as too are us yuri fans.
Looks very much like the autumn season was the one that was most favoured. Considering how good the stuff that aired then was, I guess that shouldn’t really be a surprise.

Glad to see Ai and Aya won best couple for New Generation. You can’t spell twincest without ‘win’, after all. Joking aside, their story was my favourite of the three couples from that visual novel.

With Urara Meirocho and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, I think we can safely say that 2017 is already off to a good start

Yup. Fall was the best season for the Yuri Nation last year.
They were the couple that got the most hpye and they lived up to it.

A very good start indeed. Hopefully the pace won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

This was a very great turn-out for victors! I am very happy that Mio won as best hunter since she is one of my faves, and I am also a bit surprised that Haruka and Michiru didn’t win anything. I am not surprised of who won in the end, since they were GLORIOUS!

  6. PapiCona should’ve won, but I guess more people watched Izetta than Flip Flappers. Oh well, I like both ships, so I’m not going to complain too much.

For as much as I love Yohane, Riko and Mari are still my favorites above her, so I’m glad they won. 😛

Yohane coming this far into the tournament was surprising to me too. Though she is my favorite Aqours, I expected Riko or Mari as you did.

The winners of this year all happened to be those from the shows I haven’t really checked, and I’m impressed how so many yuri fans adore Izetta: The Last Witch.
Initially I wasn’t really interested as it wasn’t a Slice-of-Life anime, the results made me so curious that I might have to watch Izetta to see for myself!

I rooted for Izetta x Fine all the way so I’m deliriously happy that they’re the biggest winners of this tournament. Most of my other choices also won their respective categories, so once again it proves that yuri fans have good taste, haha 😀

Thanks for the hard work OG for putting together this entertaining competition for the nation year after year!

It was VERY hard to pick this year, there were so many great shows, the two yuri champion pairs deserved it, as those were probably my top 5 (along with Pandora and Amanchu! and New Game). this year is starting strong, with Kobiyashi of course and Demi-chan (you know that vamp wants some snow woman) I think Citrus is getting an anime (if I’m not mistaken) so hopefully it’ll be a great year for yuri too!

These were great results! I’m very proud of the amount of Yuri we were blessed with in 2016 and I have high hopes 2017 will bring us even more, besides the few guaranteed show’s we know are coming. Thanks as always for your hard work during the year and for doing all of this.

Great to see Izetta winning lots of awards. While I had a few issues with the show, it had some great yuri aspects in it. Looking forward to what 2017 will bring for us!
