Yuki Yuna G-View Part 2 Discussion

Welcome to the second half of my YuYuYu review. As previously mentioned this part of the review will contain massive spoilers so it is highly recommended only viewers who have seen the show continue reading. I will be discussing several topics regarding my experience with the show and how I view it as a whole.

Here’s part 1 which is the series review:

231st G-View: Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru

Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru Cover

1: Alright the first order of business is the following: YuYuYu is not a dark anime. Some examples of anime that involve “torturing adolescent girls (With or without super powers) who are tasked with saving the world from destruction” that are dark include Day Break Illusion, Black Bullet, WIXOSS, Gunslinger Girl and Madoka Magica. The central theme that makes these shows dark are the exploration of how sick, demented and evil humanity can be when either pushed to extremes or they are simply molded into malevolence for whatever reason. YuYuYu does not go that route. Yes the circumstances and price the girls have to pay to protect the world is high but it comes off more as somber than disturbing. In this show’s case it has a group of zealots (I think they’re zealots) known as the Taisha who follow an archaic method, which has also been used in the aforementioned examples and more, of protecting the planet; by sacrificing virgin maidens to aid or appease the gods all for the greater good. Again this is more unfair than disturbing. Also technically nobody “turned heel” on the show, they either became filled with rate and guilt or had given up hope/run out of options.

Togo's first experiment 3

By the way, this scene is not dark. Keep in mind Togo must have done A LOT OF RESEARCH before attempting this risky test. She knows what is at stake after getting the shocking reveal. She was basically in “pinch” mode and wanted to learn the truth by any means necessary. Of course she had to be careful.

To put it as simply as possible YuYuYu is an emotionally driven anime, not one that explores the dark side of humanity.

The tree

2: The pacing. So much foreshadowing and hints leading up to the shocking reveal near the show’s climax that made me want to applaud the writers for how they slowly had events unfold and not go directly for the chaos. Now this has the price of missing the opportunity for some “mainstream bait” because it has been proven that many humans who consume entertainment media have short attention spans. On the other hand this slow and steady pace of storytelling in the span of 12 episodes while making as few missteps as possible is the sign of a well thought out script that did what it was supposed to do, get the viewer who waited invested so when the big reveals came one after the other said viewer was hooked and it could possibly lead to new viewers catching up in the meantime. Again the events were already revealed to viewers with the golden tree in the beginning of the OP, images showing the Heroes covering parts of their bodies and the burning red planet in space. Clever foreshadowing.

Ultimate Death Ball

3: The ending. Here I will discuss why the ending worked. First of all there was no “Universal reset” button. After many hurdles and Yuna literally knocking some sense into Togo and reassuring her everything would be alright our heroes fought tooth and nail baring the unspeakable amount of pain they were enduring at the time from Mankai henshin, combined all their power and successfully thwarted the ultimate Vertex assault of an ultimate death ball aimed at the Shinju-sama’s core. The Vertex took a massive blow, so much so that their forces were indefinitely immobilized to the point of uncertainty of whether their forces could regenerate anytime soon.

Not quite there

After the battle the Shinju-sama apparently released our heroines. I think for most viewers it was clear that whenever the Heroes went Mankai they sacrificed part of their bodies in exchange for a major power boost transformation. The Shinju-sama used that power to reestablish the shield against the Vertex. Once the Vertex were defeated and the Faerys sacrificed themselves to restore energy to the barrier the Shinju-sama relieved out Heroes of their duties and let them live their regular lives anew. What made this moment work are several parts:

-The world in the barrier suffered tremendous damage from the ultimate Vertex assault, more so than usual fights. Who knows how many lives were lost or severely injured outside of what the news reported.

-The girls did eventually recover from their disabilities BUT…once again going back to the show’s main theme of struggling and overcoming challenges our Heroes still had to work hard to regain their motions such as Togo having to get used to walking all over again and Itsuki slowly getting her voice back. She spoke slowly for a while before fully recovering. Even though the time was limited to show the recoveries what we did get was effective enough to hit the FEELS right where they count. Also this is an anime. We can 0nly speculate how long the recovery process was.

End message

4: As for this message it simply means Team Yuna’s story ended. If money talks it could mean other legends could be told of other Hero groups. Remember that one time during the story it was mentioned that Team Yuna was not the only group of Heroes in the world. It could mean that the world Team Yuna protected was one of others. It could mean there are other barriers around the world with remnants of the human race being protected by gods of (possibly) different religions in different sectors. After all, where did Karin come from? Which sector sent her? It is possible any questions viewers have could have been answered in the “Wasshio Sumi wa Yusha de Aru” light novel prequel or, again if money talks, could be a sign of another legend.

YunaTogo semi-epilogue

Lastly YunaTogo’s conclusion. Basically a typical case of “the internet wanted a happy ending but if it does not go the way THEY wanted it to happen, activate rage mode”. This is a common case not only in anime but any fandom across the globe. The sad truth is this trend will continue long after my generation moves on wherever we will go. Anyway long point short what awoke Yuna from her WORLD SAVING COMA was not the power of friendship but the power of Togo’s love. As I mentioned in the review Togo’s feelings for Yuna were beyond “best friends”. Togo came to visit Yuna each and every day. When Yuna recovered only Togo was there and only she needed to be. Sometime during the climax Yuna noticed how strong Togo’s feelings for her were and in her own way reciprocated. A promise to always be together. Some will call it corny but this is what I look for in dramatic yuri. I have said this before but “I love you” is not always necessary to get the message across. I did not want to make this example but I am sure Togo’s devotion reminded some viewers of a certain time traveler, though obviously a far different route.

Need more proof? The following is not fanfiction:

http://jeweledbranchofhourai.tumblr.com/post/105323837087/dammit-a-now-i-really-wanna-play-the-vn-edit

Even after all I explained here I did not even mention the connection of the Heroes’ misfortune with the way some War veterans who lost everything are treated to this day despite their sacrifices for their country.

In the end I hope all this was interesting coverage. Watching this show was most fulfilling. However, for people who thought everything I said was drivel there is another coverage post that…speaks more the internet’s language, shall we say. Thanks goes to fellow Yuri Council member Neko Haruka for the find:

There’s a VN of it? hope it get’s translated and about it being Togo’s love that bought Yuna back i totally agree personally i hope the writers just come out and say yes they are a canon couple despite how obvious it was still that punch from Yuna to Togo it worked wonders and now to wait for the YunaXTogo and FuXKarin fics to start appearing i know there’s two Yuki Yuna fics already but sadly that’s all so far

I have to say this is a very good series and agree Togo’s love awakened Yuki from her comatose state, not the power of “plot device”-sama.

School plays/performances are always ripe with subtext. Hell, the 3rd season of Cardfight! Vanguard practically gave birth to the series’ only real yuri pairing (Misaki/Kourin) through a heavy edited version of the Bamboo Princess. The “King of Knights, Alfred” (played by Kourin) saves “CEO Amaterasu” (played by Misaki) from the Vowing Sword Dragon and they fell in love. I like to also point out that this took place in a co-ed school and the role of the male lead for the play was given to the only other female member of the Cardfight! Vanguard club instead of Aichi, the actually protagonist. If that isn’t what I call blatant subtext, I don’t know what is. Then again, I often joke with my friends there are no straight characters in Vanguard (just some characters are really in denial).

Also, when will people learn that different shows in a GENRE will share similarities in tone and theme and aren’t trying to rip-off another, more popular series. =_=’

In regards to the post linked about Comparisons with Madoka
“due to the nature of the plot and the elements used, madoka is painted as “black and white” while yuyuyu opts for a more “grey area” interpretation of the girls’ struggle”
I wouldn’t agree that Madoka made it so “black and white”. Also, the girls had to sacrifice humanity, aging, and any sort of physical development to be magical girls. The “wish” was often granted in such a way to not really benefit the girls either. Though it did define their powers. Not to mention that they had the whole “soul gem tainting” to worry about, and the fact that they couldn’t be away from their soul gems or they would turn into dolls basically. I think far too many people miss this point, that the girls are not human once they get this power. And will never be human again. They will never grow old, they will never gain weight, they will never get bigger in the chest area, nothing. Some might consider that a gift, but many wouldn’t like that idea.

Anyway, that out of the way, I still would say the show was “dark”. I don’t think it has to be about the “disgusting” whatever of humanity to be dark. but, that’s just a difference in interpretations between us it seems.

I think the ending left a lot to be explained really, and opened up a whole SLEW of unanswered questions. I don’t think we were given a very good explanation of why they were given back the offerings really.

There were also other little things that happened throughout the final episode that I thought were borderline silly. An example being Karen jumping into the fight, when she already lost use of all her limbs, and couldn’t see/hear anymore. All she could do was talk. Yet, somehow it just worked for that moment.

Also, what did they even do…? Take down one big vertex? While there still were millions pouring in and all the girls were basically bedridden at this point? Why did those just stop? the wall was still very much broken.

These sorts of things throughout are why I can’t really say this is one of my favorite things ever. Thinking back, I really do think that Selector’s still holding the top spot for the season right now. But, I still greatly enjoyed this show. Just, the final episode seemed to pull too many “easy button” cards. I do like the touch of them having to work to get back use of whatever they offered up, but still…

I can definitely agree that YunaMimori is 100% a thing though. The writers were not holding back with these two xD

FuKa’s got a lot going for it as well.

The thing about anime characters who spend a lot of their time training for battle, they eventually learn to develop a sight beyond sight, meaning to fight without needing to see. I need to remember some examples but I know it has come up a couple of times in several shows. I think both Samurai X and Samurai Jack had points where the leads went “blind”.

No usage of limbs. She shouldn’t have been able to do what she did. But she did it regardless. Not to mention she was reacting to their voices. Even with the “sense” thing, she could not have done that in the state she was supposed to have been in.

One last thing I forgot to mention. How many Faerys did the “goddess” Sonoko Nogi have before becoming completely immobile?
How many times did Karin go Mankai?
        Yup.

        Like

      • cirno9fan says:

Regardless of how many times she went Mankai, the show made a point to illustrate the loss of each limb and then made a point that she had no hearing/sight. This all was shown/said flat out.

        Like

    • Hanneman says:

Well, the point of having a sight beyond sight is the other senses taking over the fuctions lost. I remember the lead in Samurai X having his hearing to compensate for his lost vision. Considering she couldnt neither hear nor see, she couldnt possibky know where the hell she was, nor where the Sun Vertex was and the direction it was headed.

Thats the only point i can make, since you could say that, upon discovering a way to actually do something, she didnt need her limbs to move the Mankai’s arms.

Potential explanation to how Karin was able to do what she did (I noticed it too and do not hold firmly to this theory myself, but what you said got me thinking): it is evident from Togo that if a disability is a significance hindrance to actually combat, there is some form of augmentation. Every time Karin lost something, something was added to her outfit. This addition could be the possible compensation. An exoskeleton “muscular” system and/or a direct sensory bypass for use only when in combat. Initially Karin was going in and out of Mankai too fast to adjust to the changes and possible worsening the extent of the damage. However after feeling useless, she was able to enter the state one final time where she was able to adjust to the changes after having physically rested a bit.

However this doesn’t explain why Itsuke didn’t receive anything, communication seems important on the battlefield. As for Fu, my dad was born blind in one eye, not as big of a hindrance as one may think.

Regardless, I think it could have been handled better.

Again this show is not dark. What some people perceive as dark is a kinda weak to what dark REALLY is. Compared to Black Bullet and even WIXOSS, YuYuYu’s serious moments were serious, not freaky as bat poop.

Oh do not worry about that. People on the internet complain about endings all the time, especially in shows or movies like this. It’s the internet dood. I often forget that. Maybe it’s because I deal with this stuff weekly being an internet wrestling fan. Having to hear it from anime fans as well just…yeah. Hard to endure without losing it at times. Thankfully my rage against ranters doesn’t last long but it has got me into trouble a couple of times. Oh well, freedom of speech and all that jazz.

A visual novel followup, a PSV game and some other content. You know, the “more answers for your money” business approach. The main Yuna story is done. Best we could hope is for another group.

Well, I put something into ‘dark, grim’ category when it ‘crush hope’ which at one point YuYuYu did, but the thing I want to say is most ‘dark, grim’ anime seems a bit too fond on relying on sudden twist and sudden drama and they should learn from YuYuYu by building the necessary atmosphere or condition to make said twist and drama more effective regardless on how truly troubling the issue it offers…

Though I guess I am bit biased on YuYuYu because ‘disability’ to me is more disturbing than ‘death’, about on par with ‘torture’ especially when the disability is total disability like what Yuuna suffer in the final episode…

It’s not like someone was very sad and created a card game with no clear rules that involved many many girls…ehh..( still love my selectors to death )

Anyway, considering things again, it was a suitable ending, the coma thing yes was corny but it fitted well, also I adhere to the NO to the love triangle, Yuna and Togo are delightful together ( omg that VN ❤ )

I could definitely see Yuuna and Togo are going to be compassionate life partners. Yunna is portraying as the man of the house – protective, braveness, and a fighter whereas Togo is like a wife role – supportive in term of emotional aspect and house works, intelligent, and a caregiver. Those two are the right matched couples forever. I do wish to have this show for a least special episodes (OVAs) or another season (this time they are like senior members in managing or mentoring the next generational heroines from the same or different locations.). There are many scenes where they are more than just friendships; i.e., starring eyes to eyes w/ blushing in possible romantic way, holding hands like couples, deep emotion issues when one is in danger, and etc….Due to Madoka show, many future shows in the same genera would always get comparison and benchmark. Anyway, this show is giving our nation the positive wave and good final GOODBYE!!! 🙂

I’ll say this outright: i disliked the ending. But not by nitpicks, because they usually pass by me and i dont even notice them. The thing is that i disliked how they handled the ending, not the ending itself. It felt rushed to me. It seems like the writers got to the final episode and thought: “Damn, how can we wrap everything in 22 minutes?”, and shoved everything without the development needed. Like the recovery part. It felt like everything was done in a week, even though i know it took longer than that.

For example, it was the only emotional episode that didnt have any effect on me. I didnt feel glad, relieved, any of that.

I was happy, at least, that they took the happy route, instead of a reset ending.

About the finale: I liked how the final battle went down, from Yuuna knocking sense into Togo, to everyone(Karin included) saving the world from a Vertex Death Ball. I was a bit surprised that stopping that attack threw a giant wrench into the Vertex’s plans, but the ruinated world is still there, so the war’s not over yet.

As for the aftermath, the recovery process may seem rushed from a meta point of view but I liked how they gradually got their lost functions back. One thing, though; It seemed, to me, that not only did the Shinju returned everything to the girls (Sonoko included), it may have abolished the old Hero system in favour of one where future Heroes can use their Mankai forms without the drawbacks. Can’t quite remember if that was implied but if it was, then that bright could only have happened because of Yuuna,Togo and the others. That’s something it (and the Taisha, by extension)

I, too, agree with the fact that it was Togo’s love for Yuuna that brought her back from the brink but not only that.I would also say that Yuuna’s will to see Togo and everyone else brought her back.

I liked how Fuu and Karin had eyepatches when they were talking to each other. It was a nice little touch.

Alrighty, then. Overall, this was an enjoyable anime. I was totally fine with the pacing and I loved everyone. Sure, there may be comparisons to Madoka and all that but that’s neither here nor there. I liked this review and I’ll read that link too. If there’s a sequel anime focusing on another group(which is highly doubtful, I think) it’d be nice if they made cameo appearances or something, since their story is over.

That’s it for now. I may have more to say but yeah, great stuff milord.

Yup. It was a bittersweet victory.

Your theories explained in the second paragraph are all plausible. Would be interesting if the VN goes into more detail about that.

Once again going back to the whole willpower playing an important role in the Heroes’ recovery along with medical assistance of course. But yeah Togo’s love being the key sounds more romantic.I’m a sucker for mushy stuff.

More fuel for the FuKa ship.

One could only accomplish so much with the allotted time remaining. Despite the rushed feeling the important parts of what made the ending work were all there.

If another story does happen, cool. I am in no hurry to see one though. Also as I mentioned Team Yuna’s chapter had a solid conclusion and need not be further expanded beyond elaborations on some tidbits.

  14. I might have to make my own review over this show to sum up my thoughts as best as I can: This is a well-done series (story, animation and characters) that takes the Mahou Shoujo genre piece and make something unique. Takahiro, with Akame ga Kill, seems to draw inspiration from the dark schlock fantasy series of yesteryears. However, Yuki Yuna takes inspiration from classic Mahou Shoujo (Sailor Moon and Magic Users Club especially with the team dynamic). I don’t feel the Madoka comparison is very apt, if only on the surface. That and the line of criticism ‘X is like Y’ or ‘X isn’t good because I apply the standards of Y’ to be a really weak critical line and only done by people that are a bit lazy.

Dark doesn’t really apply to this series, its more bleak if anything-especially in the later half of the series. And here where this show works better for me than Madoka-we get to see the heroines’ daily life, no doubt due to Studio Gokumi’s track record of SoL shows (A Channel and KinMoza). There’s something when the episodes that feature them working out daily life problems (like with Itsuki in episode 4 and all of episode 7) and the ones that show them fighting off the Vertex Kaijuu are equally compelling and thoughtful.

Yeah the ending I figured would piss some ppl off (check out ANN comment section for the series’s weekly reviews) but I feel that the happy ending is well deserved. Considering the amount of suffering and grief that the girls went through I find that Shinjuu-sama felt sorry so just gave them back their ordinary lives. Thankfully, it is a gradual (but very poignant) return-a cheaper show would have done ‘bam they are cured NOW’ so glad they subvert that. Oh, and the scene when Itsuki regained her voice and Fuu’s reaction was not only very well done but also caps off their character arcs. In fact, the last two episodes are a fantastic cap off and summation

The last scene in particular, I quite liked not only in a full circle sense but Yuki Yuna’s VO narration serves as a perfect summation of what the show is about and throughout the show we the audience have seen that philosophy in play.

TL;DR-Madoka came out and some ppl saw it and made Genei/Daybreak Illusion based off of what made Madoka popular (dark and edgy but minus the thoughtful ideas and concepts of Madoka) whereas Yuki Yuna was made by ppl who saw what made Madoka good and then using that as a basis made something that in many (but not all) ways surpasses Madoka.

I can’t wait to see what PonyCan USA will do for the Western release of this show, but now I’m definitely adding it to my list of potential buys.

  15. Addendum: While it would be nice for another season of this series perhaps, I think having either an OVA or movie based on the prequel LN would be really good.

As far as pacing goes, I think Yuyuyu’s brilliant. It’s a pretty character-driven show, so, at least to me, the slow pacing works. There’s a lot of foreshadowing indeed, not too much to be overdone and not too little, and yea, the OP’s brilliant. At first I thought it was just a visual thing, but to think the OP itself is another foreshadowing.

I actually like the ending. Sure enough the recovery process seem pretty rushed, despite they weren’t able to recover in almost the entirety of the season. I see it as a sign of Shinju-sama relieving them of their duties, and thus allowing them to recover and also no longer being able to transform. I agree with what you said regarding struggling and overcoming challenges.

All in all, the anime is an emotional coaster ride through and through, and I’m just glad they get a happy end.

    Also, YunaxTogo is ftw.

It’s so well done how they pretty much spilled the beans on what would happen yet be subtle enough for most to not notice.

Yeah. Even though the girls have a right to not believe in Shinju-sama helping them heal it is still a godlike entity that protects the people so why not help the girls who risked their lives to help keep the sanctuary safe despite getting screwed over in a way?

Yeah a bad ending would have been nothing but catering to internet mooks who think that stuff is deep or some lame-ass “life sucks, deal with it” or “nothing is gained without sacrifice”moral. If I wanted that I would get plenty of that in college or at work.

      Yup. YunaTogo is love.

Gotta disagree on the “not dark” part. While darkthemed -focused, It’s at least partially dark. At least for the last few episodes.Even after ep 12, I could still feel the after-pangs of the existentialism breakdown of Togo-san from the previous episodes after I tried putting myself in her shoes o-o Also when Fuu and Karin talked about how their duties as heroes would be left to their kouhai now, I could feel a bit of despair in my mind as I thought about the endless cycle of fighting for a remnant of a world now sizes smaller than what it was years before.

I think in those last few episodes, it surpassed even Madoka in terms of “dark” element.

unrelated: still so many mysteries but not as mystery inducing as the ending of Wixoss spread. and those trailers for yuyuyu were so deceiving. they did good.

Oh, if Japan decides to release a sequel to yuyuyu (not talking bout the prequeL), then I just hope if they do timeskip into future setting, that they don’t make too many references or appearances of yuyuyu’s cast. b/c i fear to see if they would go het relations. or to know them as now deceased heroes recorded in legend.

I got the yuyuyu soundtrack today…..but it sucks for the sole reason that a few BGM tracks aren’t in it….. like for example episode 6’s 2:35 – 4:00 time, the happy “everyday casual” sort of feel wasn’t included in the soundtrack….(actually that’s all I can point out, but it’s still sad don’t you think?)
It’s like the very FIRST BGM played in Nanoha’s First Episode which never got on any soundtrack. It was always unlisted, unnamed and yet was re-used in the PSP games.
Here’s a link to that very rare Nanoha BGM btw:

    According to GS Magazine 3月号,
mimori togou ‘s miko ability is the key point in next story..
No doubt yuki-yuna-is-a-hero is not a dark anime because the staff had said they don’t wanna do a dark anime

P.s. : There is a English translated version for GS Magazine 3月号,
