Okie dokie. The next manga to review will be one where sex plays a pivotal role in the story and is not solely there for fanservice. This is Hanjuku Joshi.

Yae and Chitose in action

Plot Summary: High school freshman Yae dislikes how girly she is but all that changes when she meets someone who’s like her complete opposite, Chitose. In another section of the school, senior Mari enters a relationship with a teacher 7-8 years older than she is in Ran-sensei. However, their relationship is a somewhat complicated one.

The story can be divided between two couples and a minor third one in the extras: the innocent love of Yae and Chitose and the more mature sexcapades of Mari and Ran.

Yae and ChitoseLet us first discuss the main couple that gets the most attention in the manga, Yae and Chitose. Their story revolves around anger towards stereotyping, struggles to accepting one’ self, understanding each other to further strengthen the already established bonds, adapting to the new world known as a romantic relationship (both inside and out), and a little bit of truth and resolution. Suffice to say, a lot happens in a story filled with many love scenes.

Yae is labeled as being stereotypically girly and this upsets her greatly. She is not athletic and squeaky. Chitose on the other hand, is a bit of a tomboy. She’s very athletic, very easygoing and carefree and popular with the girls, yet she is only attracted to Yae for a very simple reason. After they are united, both girls slowly strive to improve their personalities and becoming stronger, casting aside their weaknesses while learning about each other to become worthy of being forever united.

Ran-sensei and MariNext we have the secondary couple of Mari and Ran. Mari is a rebellious third year high school student who believes that the only way people express their true feelings for each other is through sex and this is exactly how she lured the…wise on the outside but frustrated and lost on the inside Ran-Sensei. After hooking up, it is an erotic journey where both ladies attempt to gather their thoughts and find greater meaning in their current relationship. There is also a sense of similarity with Yae and Chitose’s relationship. Funny enough, the only debate made over the student-teacher relationship they have is determining who has to be on top.

hanjuku_joshi-140As was mentioned in the introduction, sex plays an integral role in both these couples’ love lives. Believe it or not, a lot can be said about both relationships by the kind of sex they have. Trial and error leads to better communication and pleasure. The first time is always the most important and any lovemaking after that serves to improve the skills of the people as duty bound white/transparent gel/liquid activators.

The third couple is more fluff than anything else. It’s cute.

Overall, a most interesting read that may stimulate both the mind and lower regions depending on the readers’ tastes and desires. As usual when it comes to manga like this, read them at a safe location.

Nice review dood! I finished Hanjuku Joshi a while back and I really like it. It’s slightly ecchi but actually has a very sweet love story. In addition to the 2 main characters Yae and Chitose, the side story involving Ran and Mari are also very good. At first, when you suddenly see them making out in the library (when Yae and Chitose walk in on them), I thought it was just there for fan service purpose, since there wasn’t any build up at all. But then I was surprised that the story turns its focus on them and narrates the events leading up to it. Now things make a lot more sense. And in the end, their relationship is quite moving as well. The omake about Chitose’s otaku/fujoshi sister is hilarious. Overall I’ve really enjoyed reading this manga and would also like to second Overlord-G’s recommendation to yuri fans.

Yup. Give both relationships a chance and you’ll notice it’s sweet like cotton candy mixed with “love juice”. Weird combination but an effective one nevertheless.

Just read the whole thing 🙂 Good review and very very cute manga. It had some very good one-liners and touched interesting topics, but the dialogues and the development of the relationships still left things to be desired. It had a bubbly feeling, which was a great thing to make you feel happy, but at the same time it felt clumsy and childish on particular moments. It’s good but not great. Very entertaining anyways 😀

I do not know much about how people behave but I can honestly say I do believe people like these four…even the bonus couple (to an extent), do exist, which is why I was not as judgmental to them. Oh well, what do I know? I’m still…a beginner.

I meant more… about how fast the main couple ‘fell in love’. Also I don’t necessarily talk about reality but about the quality of script. Still as a whole the manga is pretty good 🙂

Ah yes, they did fall for each other quickly, didn’t they? My best guess is the plot was more about the relationship as a whole rather than the process of falling in love. There have been several yuri stories where the girls fell in love in a snap.

This one’s my all time favorite manga by far. I found it erotic, cute, fun and relaxing. There’s no unnecessary drama, things get done when they have to be done and the girls do not go over and over the “i like her but she’s a girl!” stuff.
I absolutly love Morishima’s art and the way she mix sex and mature topics into her bubbly/cute-as-f*ck works.
The characters felt human too, not the typical, boring stereotypes. I was a little bit disappointed because Ran couldn’t make out with her childhood friend but i fell in love with the devilish Mari, so i’m ok (:
Oh, i would love a girlfriend giving me some Moe Moe Powah! ~ xD

Ran already has Mari so it’s all good. She didn’t need to go through with a “one last night” thing with her childhood friend.

The cute and sexy combo works so well with yuri I believe.
