Update to The Yuri Anime List

2020 List Update: Western animated series added to the list are in “Red” because it’s easier to include them here instead of a brand new list.

Here is some more detailed information about the list.

How I Manage Shows in the Yuri Anime List

The Yuri content Grading System

Yuri Intensity Level Explanation

For both veterans and newcomers alike, here’s the most accurate yuri anime guide that I could think of. Keep in mind that as long as anime continue existing and yuri remains a viable genre, this list will be endless. Also keep in mind that canon, soft yuri or subtext is not an issue. As long as the girls in question show ANY REMOTE SIGN OF ROMANTIC OR SEXUAL INTEREST FOR ONE ANOTHER, meaning touching, more than friend like behavior, repeated teasing with a goal of earning the girl in question’s attention, it counts.

Here’s how it works. The highlighted ones I’ve already reviewed and you can check those out for more details. I’ll post how many episodes the show has and if I haven’t reviewed it, I’ll include more details until the day I finally review it (It ain’t easy reviewing all this stuff. I’m not feal87). Lastly there’s the intensity level which indicates how intense the yuri content is.

  1. Serial Experiments should be waaay up there!

Lain’s feelings for Alive were like the driving force for the choices she made! Surely BAD END was waiting at the tunnel of that but it doesn’t belong in the bowels of the list. But I guess this makes sense to the general fans…so..erm…ah!

Any ways, this is one great list and the construct was really great!

Erm, so, I was looking for that 2011 list you were talking about, where can I find it?

    • Overlord-G says:

Well, I shouldn’t have added Lain to the list because I haven’t seen it yet. I only heard rumors about the yuri. This list is far from updated. I still have many old shows I have yet to see.

It’s in the Yuri news/topics section.
It’s both topics on the Yuri Awards.

    Madoka: “Hey, Shinji. Suck It!”

Speaking of Madoka, I’m assuming you are planning to wait until the end of the current season before adding Lagrange, Pirates, Symphogear, etc to the list.

I was wondering, was this only going to be an anime only list, or were you thinking about adding manga/light novels too? The manga versions of Hidamari Sketch and K-On might just boost both series each one grade. A couple of the Blue Drop manga series, especially the first series, could possibly be Grade 1.

Also when you consider the entirety of the Strike Witches cannon, not just the anime, the intensity might just increase to high due to the number of both cannon and implied couples.

I plan on reviewing Ga-Rei Zero eventually. Stay tuned for that.
K-ON’s yuri is hardly noticeable and not enough to send our radar skyrocketing to orbit.
BRS TV has to finish before I make my final decision. 2 episodes aren’t enough to confirm this. Also that rating is for the OVA, not the TV anime.

Dedicated history, or good plot or great characters, I love them.

While people out there are watching Shonen animes, I find myself in this whole new universe, of wider mind perception and beauty.

Almost 35 y.o. and yet huge fan of these animes.

Thanks for stopping by and the comment dood.

As for the shounen anime comment, shounen isn’t my favorite genre (Possibly my least favorite for the moment) but that’s not saying the genre sucks as there are some non-action oriented shounen out there that I’ve greatly enjoyed.

Grade 1 Yuri anime? Not sure. Any of the other grades? Plenty. Saki season 2, Railgun season 2, Hyperdimension Neptunia (Hopefully) and there’s currently (Fall 2012 season), Jormungand season 2, Seitokai no Ichizon season 2, Hidamari Sketch season 4. There was also Sengoku Collection in the Spring and Summer that I’ve yet to mention here. Dog Days season 2 is another one.

Keep in mind, these aren’t 100% yuri shows but there’s (will be) definitely yuri to be found in them.

Most of them are already on the list and in their respective Grades. Unfortunately, none of them are new. So far, the Grade 1 shows on the list are currently the only ones. There are some on the video I haven’t mentioned in my list but none of those are Grade 1 either.

Let me explain in more detail what Grade 1 means. Grade 1 shows are those that you know are all about yuri. You don’t have to look up anything online. no subplots, no surprise yuri. The show is mainly about yuri. So far, the ones in the Grade 1 list are the only ones right now.

Nobody said it was easy finding couples in the Grade 2 and lower shows. Some of them you need to endure male interference, but most of the Grade 2 shows still have a great focus on yuri but it’s not THE main focus.

Basically, the lower the grade (1-5) the more you’ll need to endure for yuri.

Do you happen to know this one Hentai (pardon the messiness of my explanation) in which this young girl goes to a Catholic boarding school and there’s rape and whatnot with the nuns and the priest (also there’s something to do with her mother) , but I believe there’s two scenes where the main character makes love (no raping here) to another girl. I’ve seen the scenes before and even once had found the whole thing I believe, but that was a long time ago and since then have had no luck in finding it. Sorry for the long and messy explanation, but if you happen to have even the slightest clue that’d be great. Also I guess it would be a Hardcore Hentai from what I remember. Thanks.

No worries friend. I’m not much of a hentai person anymore. Shoujo Sect and the Sono Hanabira OVA are the only ones worth my time these days. Basically I’ll only watch a hentai fully if it’s entirely yuri. No het scenes.

Hmm, there’s a hentai game called Yukkuri Panic: Escalation that fits your description.
If it isn’t a game, there’s Anal Sanctuary, Cream Lemon: Escalation, Crimson Climax, Holy Virgins, Sin Sorority. Hope one of these is the one you’re looking for.

I’ve seen Cream Lemon: Escalation and its similar but not quite it. I’ve looked through these and I don’t think they are the one I’m looking for, but thanks for the suggestions of what it might’ve been. I guess maybe you might not know of/have watched it since there’s rape and also there was a male involved in one of the scenes (trust me, I don’t like rape and I wasn’t watching it to see the guy get it on) but then again, for me it is very difficult to find any decent lesbian hentai scenes.
Also in my quest to find it, I came across a (hentai) scene involving a girl who clearly was a lesbian and she was about to make love to this one girl but (the clip) ended before they did anything. As for this one, I’d love to see more but the clip was in Japanese and I had no clue of what they were saying and there were no subtitles. So, sucks for me. Anyways, sorry for the long post and thanks again for the help.

Overlord-G, do you even know about Yuri? If you upload a Yuri anime hentai version without male or dildos interference I’ll be glad because when there is interference of males and dildos, it’s an insult to us pure Yuri. Me and my GF was almost near to our first time romantic sleepover when we put on Yuri hentai anime but those other grades beside grade one disturb our moment and I didn’t have the chance. So please erase those evil fake Yuri hentai version which I mentioned just now. I thought you know which is Yuri OG and I also recommended my other friends to search your anime lists for some Yuri according to their taste of course but I was wrong to recommend them (sigh), I can’t find other websites about pure Yuri or those are just for male as their toy (T_T)

KPM is on my schedule as of now. The reason El Cazador is Grade 2 is because the yuri does not become explicit until the halfway point. Also, for a show to be Grade 1, the yuri has to be advertised from the start, not revealed later on.

Oh? I have not added any of the three shows you mentioned. I’ll take care of it soon.

I loved the tension between Shizuma and Nagisa, and how Nagisa came to love and understand Shizuma, there was a lot of romance and passion between all the characters (not a lot of sex or nudity) but I felt compelled to continue watching each episode. I suppose its also similar to the Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl anime, how after Hazumu changes he/she begins to feel more love and compassion from everyone else around them.

I think to best describe what I’m looking for is a relationship buildup, introduced to a brand new character in a new area (school, home etc) and they fawn over someone, and its not instantaneous love between characters, but it builds up over time until the last couple of episodes where they kiss (or more). And throughout the entire plot you’re thinking, will they work out or not.

Its a lot to ask hehe. Sorry for this

CANAAN and Maria’s relationship, while giving off strong vibes was not that important. It was tertiary. It was more about CANAAN and Alphard’s feud.
Shinobuden is Grade 2 for the same reason He Is My Master is. Like Anna with Izumi, Shinobu’s feelings for Kaede grow stronger with each episode her love is shown. The line Shinobu used somewhere on the show was an excuse to hide the truth. The other reason is because Shinobu’s the main character. The reason it isn’t Grade 1 is that her and Kaede’s growing relationship is not the main focus of the show.

If you’re still updating the list, I’d like to challenge some of the gradings:

    • I think “El Cazador” should be raised to a Grade 2. Ellis and Nadie’s relationship, though never explicitly said to be romantic, is pretty heavily implied to be so, especially in the last few episodes. Kind of confused because an earlier comment implies that it should be Grade 2 already but it’s in Grade 3…?
    • .hack//SIGN does not have three seasons etc. – that is the .hack Project. The anime are stand-alone, so I think treating them separately is acceptable; in that case, .hack//SIGN should be separated from the rest, which do not have a lot of yuri. In SIGN, though, the yuri is significant enough to warrant a Grade 2 with Low/Medium intensity. Although it is only expressed fairly subtly, Tsukasa and Subaru’s relationship is quite obviously romantic, and is recognised as such by the other characters. Their relationship is crucial to Tsukasa being able to re-establish her identity and become somebody she is proud to be, which I view as the main thread of the plot, so I would say the yuri is definitely plays a /very/ important role.

Sorry about that – you can probably tell I’m a fan of Bee Train. Other than that, thank you very much for compiling this list – it’s a wonderful resource!

  89. gotta disagree with the Yami to Boushi and Neptune one (which wasn’t ranked).l,
Yami to Boushi had the protagonist’s love for the other girl as driving theme, but overall, it was medium.5 to me; not enough episodes to make it high plus several other factors. Neptune has gotta be at least low there, I mean, in the anime ver, ALL the characters were girls, even the mob character guards.

Looking forward to the Winter/or was it Autumn YuruYuri OVA of 2014 + future episodes of YuukiYuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. I didn’t think Yuuki Yuuna would straightaway focus on the mahou shoujo fighting stuff by the very first episode but I guess that’s how it is. From the lovely trailers I watched of the “yuyuyu” pre-airing, I thought that the first episode at least would focus on mostly school life and not jump to mahou shoujos right away. Of course, I had not realized to read the summary of the enemy on other sites that the setting was “the god era” which should have really tipped me off that it would not be a mere school life anime. Really, I actually thought that yuyuyu would be a school life setting anime with the usual amuzing friendship fights and club activities of funsies and that the “hero” transformations were just some imagination fights the characters dream up/write in a original story and then have the anime end with a cliche line like “This is the story of how Yuuki Yuuna became a hero” or something.

I wonder if they’re aiming for a second season of yuyuyu since they also announced (on the day that the anime aired episode 1) that there would be a PS VITA game of yuyuyu coming in Febraury 2015.

    • er,to clarify when I said “not ranked” I meant that I don’t count it as Grade 4 in my mental ranking lawl.something abit higher but not high.

And cereally, it’s visibly boring now in Autumn b/c there’s no fun Yuri or non-Y chromosome focused anime out yet. i still have to continue watching hanayamata episode 8+ and finish Sakura Trick as well, as well as Kanamemo, and Yama no Susume, and the K-on! movie and some 5 or 6 yuriges, but really, it still feels boring.

So I tried following Pokemon XY anime in my boredom. A half mistake as the brat main character Eureka keeps trying to pair almost every female character in the series up with her elder brother main character Citron which really steamed away a ,by nature, Yuri lover like myself. But I’m still bearing with it hoping that something interesting will happen soon. And to knock away some of my boredom, I started getting back into Pokemon games again, only to find out Wifi for the games of 2012 below were cut off this year. And I don;t have 2 DS so I can’;t trade to myself either.

It’s even more boring when there’s no one offline I have met that is a Yuri fan to maniaclly chatter about Yuri with. since Yuri is lesser known in many parts and considered “rotten” by the public, just like with Yaoi, thanks to a certain illogical philospher’s influence years back.

Also fighting my boredom by watching the latest Doctor Who Series8 episodes, but now I’m kept in (first world problem) suspense of the next episode next saturday which means that I have to go suffer my school tests and homework for this week and fight on till Saturday.sigh.

Why doesn’t someone make some big “online cafe/chat program” or something where it’s only for us Yuri fans to gather with avatars and just talk Yuri? Gawds, I can’t imagine the codings needed to make something so advanced tho (my image of the yuri cafe program: can be used on smartphones, mostly meant for PCs, graphics and avatars are basically Pangya quality).

I’d say that yuri in selector WIXOSS is actually grade 2 rather then grade 3. Apart from really obvious subtext there is a 100% canon Aki X Ulith pairing which literally drives the second season. And, yeah, there was a CENSORED KISS /screw the goddamn censorship oh god why/, scars licking, Aki’s yandere obsession, lots of huggs and cute hair stroking stuff. Their relationship is quite important throughout selector spread WIXOSS, therefore it does play a role here.
Also I would mention the relationship between selectors and their LRIGs (almost every boundary is a yuri-ish one apart from Kuro X whoever and Ulith X whoever), Hitoe X Yuzuki X Ruko relationship, as well as Kuro-Shiro-Mayu X Ruko (perhaps the most important plot line for the whole show) and “Girl meets Girl festival” /sorry I just had to xD/
It could be that I forgot something, but stil I consider WIXOSS to be a yuri show, not that it’s just a minor plot line. That is~

      • “Reader” below mentioned (amongst many others) “Tenshi no Drop”. That one’s probably easy to check out, as it’s only a 5 minute short OVA, and I was a bit surprised not to find it on the list. This should be grade 2 yuri with low intensity (kissing attempts, some hugging/teasing, but that’s it).

Also, I thought it was weirdly awesome with all the fetish stuff, even though most people hate it… Would love to get more (of the Manga as well).

Hello, firstly, I want to thank you for this blog; it helps me a lot for discovering the yuri-world, so thanks you!

But, I’m wondering: did you know the anime called “Hourou Musuko” or “Wandering Son” in English? It’s not a typical yuri, but I think it could appears on this list. It’s a slice of life anime about a trans-girl, a trans-boy and a cis-girl who enter in the puberty. The 3 of them are forming some sort of “broken love triangle”.
I guess it’s a “grade 2/Medium” anime, because the main focus is about the trans-identity issues of two of the characters, but there is definitely romantic tensions between “females” inside it: The relationship with others and the romance prospects are two big issues for trans-people.

But I understand if you don’t want it on the list, because it’s very genderblind, you have to be far more open-minded than for Kashimashi. I’m not sure that many yuri fans will like it.

In any case, thank you again. 🙂

Just a small correction to Murder Princess: the manga (atleast Vol 2, the last chapter I’ve been able to find, basically) ends in an even less conclusive way than the anime version does. It ends basically just as the final battle we see in the anime (or the manga equivalent of such) starts, and without resolving any of the plot lines the anime leaves unresolved. Having read/watched both, the anime definitely has the better conclusion (namely, a conclusion to something, at least). Mostly due to the creator never getting the budget to finish the whole story/continue it further sob.

  128. Finished Qwaser finally. Super serious question: Is it worth reading the manga after you finish (any) anime? I’m asking because in the final stretch, things started to get confusing.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I can’t say for Qwaser, but generally “it depends”. There are examples where I’d prefer the Anime to the Manga, e.g. Sakura Trick. But there are others where I consider the Manga a must read, not because it’s really that much better or anything, but just because the Anime won’t cover the entire story. And there are some beautiful (Yuri) stories and especially endings that I wouldn’t have want to miss, prime example: Sasameki Koto. The Anime stops at about what… 10% of the story? 15%?

So yeah, it depends.. Typically I’d just read a few posts about the differences between Manga & Anime online, and then make a decision.

  129. Looking through your list again now, I notice the part about Murder Princess having no animated conclusion, and the manga having one…I honestly think you might want to change that…I’ve both seen the anime and read as much of the manga as I can find online, and the anime actually finished at least part of the storyline while the manga ends in the middle of basically everything, just before the events of the anime’s final parts (at least based on what I’ve found…there may of course be an untranslated chapter of the manga somewhere that I haven’t seen). It’s the problem of course with a series that was published in a magazine that was shut down and thus had to end before it was supposed to, but I at least felt the anime’s ending was far more conclusive than the manga’s.

Before discovering this list, most of my knowledge of anime with yuri was pretty much limited to many of those in Grade 1, like Strawberry Panic, since those seem to be some of the most famous, but now I feel as if I’ve jumped from a pond to the ocean.

I have a lot of catching up to do, so I’ll probably go through all of these anime one by one, well, the ones in Grade 2 and grade 3 anyway. The ones in Grade 4 and Grade 5 can be left for another time since they don’t seem to have much.

I’m currently jumping between watching shows in grade 2 and grade 3, and after watching Scorching Ping Pong Girls I’m surprised to see it being listed as a Grade 3 when it feels more worthy of Grade 2, even more than some of the shows listed as Grade 2.

You don’t need goggles to see that the two main leads are clearly more than friends, to the extent that they’re being shipped by other characters in the show, which led to one funny scene where sexual innuendos were made.

That whole relationship between the antagonist and their club captain was blatant as well, the writer didn’t even attempt to hide their intention there.

    Some recommendations:

Sword Art Online II: Grade 4, low intensity. 24 episodes + recap episode that nobody counts. The last arc by itself deserves to be higher, but the series as a whole drags it down.

Anime-Gataris: Grade 4, low intensity. 12 episodes. Opened up with some great Minoa x Arisu moments, but went up and down on how much focus they got.

Mangirl!: Grade 5, low intensity. 13 episodes + OVA. Super awkward title. When Aki’s motivation for joining Hana’s company is “because I love you”, it should be easy to get a higher rating, but they barely touched on yuri themes after that.

I want to suggest adding Scum’s Wish to the list. In my estimate it would be a Grade 2: High Intensity. It’s a romance anime where one of the more important relationships it explores is yuri and it is consummated rather than just implied in subtext. It’s also not H. It’s about on par with Citrus for intensity, but unlike Citrus the show does not entirely revolve around a single yuri relationship.

Because it isn’t the entire point. That happens around the halfway point. It’s similar to Meduca Meguca where Homura’s quest for Meduca isn’t made apparent until the halfway point or so. The main plot of both shows revolves around their setting and circumstances than the romance. Hence their Grade 2 Yuri category.

With the show’s recent ending, I think Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online deserves a spot in either G3 or G4. It had at least one openly bisexual character (in episode 9, also that a yuri kiss on the cheek happened), while other one is debatable (Pito/Elza). But more importantly, in very unexpected turn of events just as the show is about to end, a yuri kiss happened between (Elza -> Karen/LLENN) with emphasis given into it. May be unrequited, but I’d consider it.

Hello! This is probably only category 3, but in Qualidea Code a couple of Hotaru Rindou with Maihime Tenkawa, in Seven Knights Revolution: Eiyuu no Keishousha, there is just an excellent storyline and love line of Shirley with Ellen, well, the third is Granblue Fantasy The Animation Season 2, a whole story arc of Katalina Alize with Vira Lilie.

The guy who made Kuttsukiboshi is making another anime, hopefully it will be free of executive meddling…

hello can you make a list from recent to previous because i want to list it all and i think it will be hard to find the new ones when it updated… but it’s fine if you put the new one’s (soon one’s) on the last every level? do you update it like that?

Hello again OG-Man, I have another suggestion, though this time it’s shorter, with only 1 episode clocking at 6 minutes and 30 seconds. It’s called Massara, it’s an anime for the song of the same name (by the artist Kiyoe Yoshioka). You don’t have to review it, but I’d like to know what you think of this short anime :3

I’m curious. What is your logic for yuri “intensity”? “Low” if girls hold hands? “Medium” for kisses scenes? “Overheat” for sex? I’m really really curious what to expect from the anime looking at the rating from you.

Is the yuri in the P4 video game the same because I can´t find it in your video games list and the anime based on it.

Does the same go for the golden remake?
