OG’s Winter 2023 Anime Picks

Maybe it’s a little early this season to post my picks but it’s tradition in these parts to do so around Week 9 or 10 of the previous season so why stop now? As always things can change with some shows added and others removed based on my mood.

Picks based on these sources:

Source 1

Source 2

Magical Revolution Cover

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady. Looks like this will be the Super Mega Fantasy Yuri of 2023 following the footsteps of Otherside Picnic and The Executioner and Her Way of Life. Because of that it most likely will be overlooked by isekai purists due to it NOT being the typical “macho fantasy” drivel they crave. Anyhoo I am going into this one as blind as possible basing my anticipation solely on the title description and that it’s based on another beloved fantasy light novel yuri epic.

D4DJ All Mix! PosterD4DJ All Mix. The gay DJs are back but this time they’re bringing in everyone except the new groups introduced in Fall 2022 to the fray. Hopefully they don’t shaft the other groups to maybe one or two episodes at most and instead focus only on the main two, those being “Happy Around!” and “Peaky P-Key”, similar to what BanG Dream S2 and S3 did.

Mou Ippon! girlsMou Ippon! A judo girls sports anime. Nuff said.

Love Live! NIJIYON

NIJIYON!: A small appetizer as we wait for the big Love Live! Nijigasaki Special THAT I HOPE IS AT LEAST AN HOUR LONG.

And these are the only shows I have a pretty good feeling about. Personally shocked how few there are this time.

Reborn to Master the Blade

Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire♀

Want me to check out your isekai? Have a female lead but don’t turn it into an otome het harem. Reborn to Master the Blade is actually a gender swap reincarnation but whatever. I’ll give both the three episode rule. Not expecting to be wowed by either but who knows? They might surprise me.

Ayakashi Triangle ProtagonistsAyakashi Triangle. My one hope for this gender-bender ecchi comedy is all the girls fall for the male lead’s female form and we get a yuri Ranma 1/2. That or give me a superior Kampfer. Three episode rule here too.

NieR Automata Ver 1.1aNieR Automata Ver1.1a: My main hope is for the gayer side-characters to appear on the show. 2B X A2 being the main pairing is a pipe dream because we all know the writers won’t dare ruin the mainstream fav of 2B X 9S.

Other thoughts:

  • Can’t add the Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel anime as it stars an original cast set in the same world. I will watch it of course. MAYBE Rean’s squad will make a cameo along with the lovely Angelica but I’m not expecting more than that from the main gang.
  • Hopefully the new Trigun anime will be good.
  • The GRIDMAN UNIVERSE movie better do the right thing and not piss me off.
  • Pretty sure many will ask “Where’s BOFURI 2?” and my answer is I lost interest in BOFURI.

you know, the merm4id x rondo special has been available for quite a while, you might even be able to find it on youtube

  2. Red says:

    2B X A2 being the main pairing

    2B X 6O, though.

Pretty much the same though I would add Bofuri and possibly Onimai. I dont care to watch nier but may give ayakashi a try. From what I have heard the main love interest does not care if mc is a guy or girl she just loves mc. However considering the source I have just about zero hope of any actual yuri.

  4. I certainly recommend to “Reborn to Master the Blade” this work critiques horny and toxic male attitudes towards women 🙂

I’ve only read 2 LNs of reborn to master the hero’s blade, but it’s probably one of the more yuri friendly genderbend Isekai LNs out there (though Did I seriously get reincarnated as my gag character!? definitely tops it). The MC doesn’t get caught up on what she used to be, partly because she’s actually at peace with her past life, and also because only one thing is on her mind for the most part: having epic fights (due to missing out on that in her previous life)

basically the same as my list, outside I’m definitely watching Onimai, as it may have been ages, but I feel like I enjoyed it. Though it plays with any yuri fan’s heart pretty heavily last I recall. Bofuri’s also a must watch, of course. And I’m planning to try out spy classroom, because I know nothing but curiosity

I should really get to D4DJ….but bang Dream S3’s handling of everything just makes me adverse to giving it the chance I should…

I’ll also be continuing to watch shadow(barring it does something REALLY stupid), but that’s 100% not a yuri show. I just find it entertaining enough that I can look past how obviously het harem it is.

If you (already) know what happened in the Northern War, there will surely be appearances of Rean and Co.

But the anime will be seen from the perspective of people of this region, so it will have an original cast, of course.

Can´t wait to see how close they work(ed) together with Falcom for the animation (quality) and story(line).

There is also a manga of Magical Revolution and its very good and funny.

Can´t wait to see Ani x Euphi.

    Genius x Princess: Wonderful.
Judo Girls: I liked the preview.
80k Gold: I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this for a while. It’s by the author of Average and Potions (no anime… yet), and I love both. Sol Press bought the license and screwed up a lot. J Novel Club has it now, but hasn’t released anything. Anime first this time.
Bofuri 2: More OP girlfriends plz.
    Love Live Chibi: Of course.

Guy Reborn as a Girl: Give me “okies, I’m a girl now” or a drunken “I wish I was a cute girl” or something. Not jumping in on “I’m still a guy with a girl body.”

Seems like this winter season is a little more laid back than previous years. Still disappointed that Birdie Wing got pushed back until the spring, I was really looking forward to that show. One that’s not on your list here but is something I’m excited about is season 4 of Bungo Stray Dogs. Maybe this will finally be the season I work on my Netflix and Prime Video backlog, even though I say that all thr time.

  10. Zack says:

I definitely looking forward to Magical Revolution. I’ve read the manga, and it’s great.

Shame you’re not covering Bofuri season two. I loved the first season, and intend to watch this one too.

I don’t know what to think of Reborn to Master the Sword quite yet, but the positivity that I’ve seen towards the series online makes me want to at least check out the first three episodes.

  11. Magical Revolution and LL are definite watches. Don’t know much about the rest, so I’ll see which catches my attention. I never actually watched Bofuri S1, not in much of a rush, but one day maybe. Kind of curious about Nier, but I haven’t played the game, so not sure if I’d be able to follow this series.

Overall, Winter seems like a light season for Yuri, but I’m looking forward to Birdie Wing’s return in the spring. I of course have other non-yuri anime to watch for the winter, but only a few. Let’s hope we have a satisfactory season with whatever shows we ultimately end up watching.

Will definitely be watching the magical revolution princess anime definitely.

Didn’t know there’s a new d4dj lol. Will check it out.
Also that judo anime seems interesting.

My friend literally messaged me with the saving gold anime saying “hey I’m sure you’ll like this” so I’m gonna take their word for it hahaha

Have my eyes on reborn as master blade and ayakishi triangle, they seem interesting enough! Master blade especially looks really neat basing from the PV.

No real interest in Nier as I haven’t played the game but eh maybe if there’s not enough stuff to watch I’ll pick it up.

Oh hell, Bofuri is this coming season to huh. I guess that goes into my list too.

Hyped for GRIDMAN regardless since I wanna see giant robots smash, but crossing my fingers for akane and rikka? hopefully.

I mostly watching everything on the must watch list, although I need to to marathon through D4DJ of course. Still not sure what to cover for the 4th show yet

Definitely a light season, but the Spring will surely be packed.

    I effing love Ayakashi Triangle.
It takes the best parts of Yabuki’s other works Black Cat, and To Love-ru.

    2 Gender Bender?!
Things not looking too hot this season

    The Gridman movie?
    The literal worst possible thing?
Thats what its doing to do.

Probably doing this BECAUSE so many people saw Akane x Rika when they wanted them to see thems… I mean audience avat… I mean self-inser… I mean Yuta with Rika.

  16. Christen Rutherford says:

I like the fact that more and more I see anime based on light novels that use a female MC, the girls are great and have more chemistry with each other unlike the male protagonists that have never works, it certainly frustrates me that many authors they have such good ideas, but disappointing that they always choose a boring and unbearable boy as the main lead, Index and Railgun are the best example of how the same setting, but with a different protagonist being railgun with misaka makes the story more enjoyable.

it’s been yuri lite for a while, so hopefully Magical Revolution can deliver another Grade 1 yuri (according to your list).

    • OG-Man says:

Probably Grade 2. Depends how important their relationship is to the plot over the titular revolution.

      • SeanDrake says:

The relationship is the driving focus for the story, the revolution is just a side effect.

I believe it’s been toned down from the wn to the ln but the MC is surprisingly hardcore when pushed.
Because she has no magic and her tech only goes so far for emergencies she has a dragon blood tattoo and dragon bone grafts/spinal implants that let her power up for a price

We’ll see what happens when the anime airs. Very excited regardless.

    Off-Topic but breaking news:

“I´m in love with the villainess” will get an anime adaption next year, but no season has been announced yet but there is already a trailer.
