477th G-View: Love Live! Superstar!! S2

It is time to check out the second season of the interesting new group in the Love Live! franchise. Their first season was impressive. Let us find out how they followed it up in their second adventure.

WARNING! Contains spoilers of the first season. Check out my review of it HERE.

Themes: Music, Yuri

Number of Episodes: 12

G-Rating: 8/10

Plot Summary: After failing to win the Love Live! tournament Liella got right back up determined to give it another go. This time however, an idea swirled around their minds. One of the school idols’ main goals is to be a ray of happiness and hope for people with open arms. Why not consider recruiting new members and make school idols more appealing to more people?

First years accept Sumire's decisionThe main draw besides more Liella. The surprise new first years joining the team. From left to right: Natsumi, Dr Shiki, Kinako and Mei.

As mentioned in the intro Liella are an interesting group. My headcanon is they were created as a response to fans who thought Nijigasaki were too different so Liella was here to go back to basics but with their own special touch. Basics as in how the group came together, the goal to compete in the Love Live tournament and of course save a school from closing down. Even the first five members felt familiar to past legends though naturally they had their unique charms that made them more than worthy of being part of the franchise. This time their quest for gold continued but they would not be a five girl group anymore. Continuing the trend of Love Live! traditions they would recruit four new girls and reach the classic number 9. What set them apart from their predecessors was their journey. Instead of simply trying again one of the important themes of Liella S2 was veterans taking in younglings and teaching them the ways of the school idol, helping not only the newcomers become possible legends in the making like their senpai but the senpai too would grow stronger as guides and proper role models overcoming new obstacles along with some unfinished business from last season.

Kinako gives Kanon some good newsKanon and Kinako are pretty much the leaders of the senpai and kouhai groups.

As mentioned both newcomers and veterans have their own individual worries all coming together to try and overcome the biggest challenge of all, learning how to work together as a well tuned school idol cruise ship of supreme happiness. Like any good season of Love Live! every member of the group gets their time to shine. Concerned a veteran is pushed into the background? Be patient. Their time to shine once again will come. Another thing I alluded to was unfinished business from last season. Viewers who remember certain unresolved things from last time can rest assured they are tackled this season with very interesting outcomes. Oh yes indeed.

Shiki's Running MachineBack to the first years. It does not take long for them to prove themselves worthy of being part of the group, as in most of them quickly become likable.

Kinako fills the previously empty spot of “the cute one”. That is to me she is the most adorable of all 9. Her cute country girl mannerisms also help.

Mei is the lovechild of two school idol legends. Viewers can guess which two by looking at her. She has her mothers’ traits and talents along with her own unique touch.

Natsumi is an interesting one. She has a similar introduction as Mia Taylor wherein we get small glimpses of her character and story until her big episodes. Without saying too much she has a set goal in mind but how she gets to it and what exactly drives her are why her story is interesting. Depending on the viewer they will understand her appeal from the get-go or it may need to get the full picture first. Either way she too is delightful.

Lastly is my favorite, Dr Shiki. A mad scientist with a big brain and subtle sass. Besides her mannerisms and fun inventions there is another big reason why she is my favorite which we will get to in a moment.

There is actually one more newcomer to the show but it is best for readers to meet her themselves. Without giving away too much all I will say is the things I liked about her were her style and gimmick. That is all.

Liella's thank you for your support performanceLove Live! fans know what to expect from the presentation by now. Very colorful and vibrant animation and wonderful musical performances. That being said, in case of newcomers who are not used to my G-Views, specifically of idol anime, I am not a good judge of musical talent. I cannot grade a good idol song from a great one. My thoughts on songs are solely based on how they make me feel. In the case of Love Live I simply tell readers whether I enjoyed the performance or not. In short I enjoyed the new performances with the first years joining in. Each one made me happier than the last seeing the girls come together and doing their best to succeed as a growing team. However, one minor nitpick is despite the senpai saying the kouhai have more work to do to keep up with the senpai during certain performances it never looked to me like the younger girls had a hard time keeping up with their experienced seniors. It did not bother me at all. I just did not notice during performances until they mention it. Again it is a nitpick. The important thing is conveying strong emotions and like always for the franchise this season of Love Live! nails it.

Mei hits Shiki with a lethal attackChisato remembers Kanon's encouragementKeke and Sumire waiting in vain for new membersI could go on a detailed explanation about the main event but I will keep it simple. We had one last season. Now we have three. Liella wanted to show NijiGaku aren’t the only yuri powerhouses of the franchise. They made a very strong case this season, OH YES INDEED! When they were introduced Shiki and Mei were the newcomers I was most excited to learn about…They exceeded my expectations. As for the senpai, prepare yourselves. That is all I will say.

One last thing I would kind of count as a flaw. The final conflict and finale could have been done better. I get why it ended that way as I will mention in the conclusion but just because it is “tradition” does not mean you have to pull out every single trope.

Overall Love Live! Superstar!! S2 was more Liella greatness that is sure to please many fans of the group and Love Live as a whole. Eight seasons in and the franchise is still going strong. As always the performance quality is up to viewers but to me they were great as always. The four new girls are excellent additions to the team, the veterans have new and interesting obstacles to overcome and the last new girl I leave to viewers to make their own opinions of her. Normally this is where I would hope for a Liella movie to wrap things up but this group made history at the end of the season…by getting a third one! So yes. Let us continue following their journey in the near future.

Sumire and Ren pajamasPS: Ren is still love. Ren is still life. Bless you Ren.

Overall it was a fun season with lots of memorable moments.
I like the idea of the old cast being senpai to the younger girls, and the early episodes were they had difficulty recruiting members was something I really liked. Liella had built up such a reputation that it was Kinako, an outsider, who joined up first!
The last episode felt a bit eh since we all know they aren’t shipping Kanon to Vienna, but we are keeping Margarete so all is forgiven! Give me more high ground Margaret in s3 please!

That’s mainly because we read a third season was coming before the finale got subbed. That being said the final conflict could have been better.
Wien better get a redemption arc next season.

The second season is fun and the new members are fun, but I kind of wish they received a bit more character development like the first years, although the pairing moments is nice and Ren’s video game addiction is kind of funny.

Yes, Margaret thing kind of give me mixed feelings, but hopefully she will have a redemption arc in the third season. It looks like 12 might be the magic number in line with Nijigasaki.

Remember. The senpai already told most of their stories so of course the kouhai would get more time to develop because they are new.

Always remember. Ren is love. Ren is life.

The big hope is for Wien to redeem herself next season.

You know Nijigasaki has 13 members.

    GALAXY ¡!!!!!!!!!!!!

    A Fantastic season!

The Mei x Shiki and the Ren Gamer episodes were my favorite of this season!

Mei x Shiki stole much of the season for me! They are SO GOOD!

Happy for season 3! That means more opportunities for more Mei x Shiki moments! And more Best Girl of course!

Best Girl is still Best Girl! Ren is still love, Ren is still life indeed! Bless her!

    Looking forward to next season!

Also, still love Kannon’s pet owl!

  5. I feel like this season tried to amp up the gay and it’s certainly welcome. It seems as though they are getting more comfortable about using the L word, either directly or indirectly with comments made by the other members. Our three couples are wonderful and I hope we’ll see even more great moments from them in S3.

I agree that the finale was a little underwhelming and they could’ve managed certain plot points a bit better. However, I’m grateful we’re getting a S3 and I hope that it will allow for some more character development of the Senpai group as well as newcomers. Overall though, pretty good season and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Liella’s journey.

Best parts of the season were the old and couples’ growth. The new quartet are more than welcome additions.

Yup. The ending conflict could have been better but to say that ruined the season is an exaggeration.

Excited to see what happens in S3.

Summer had a lot of shows that ended in a disappointing way, and this sadly had to make it onto the list. I’m excited for season 3, but the final episode of season 2 just felt rushed and not handled well at all.

It’ll be interesting to see where they take things.

I said this to another friend, but for me, as long as Liella keeps the constant of Sumire and Keke, then I can deal with any changes that come~ Those two are the true stars of the show for me ❤

The newcomers were all great, and I personally would say Natsumi took my spot as #1 kouhai, even if design wise she didn’t really win. but that’s how things go sometimes. She’s just really fun!

I gotta say I’m much happier Kanon stays with Chotose here (where she belongs). Also more Keke (and Sumire) hijinks are always welcome.

  8. Nick says:

I liked S2, it built on the story and showed the progression of the main 5 girls, while also bringing in the new girls and making them feel welcome.

Mei was by far my favorite, but I’m sure you knew that a long time ago. Any redhead in Love Live will always have my attention.

If I had any issue with this season it would have to be with the final few eps and the whole Vienna music school arc. It felt shoehorned into the story and just didn’t feel super necessary. Like I mentioned in a previous post, Wien’s obsession with Kanon for most of the season made little sense because she only found out about Kanon being scouted for the music school at nearly the same time everyone else did. So why was she so obsessed with her before then? I liked your comparison to Mia Taylor and how Wien was just a less interesting version of her, that’s completely true. If Wien was introduced better and had more of a presence throughout the season, then she’d probably have more impact on the show and just be a better character. Oh well, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next season with her.

Looking forward to S3, whenever that will be. Hopefully next year sometime.

Lots of fun was had with the old and new girls.

Another wonderful redhead school idol to love.

Not the best final act and best we can hope for Wien is a good redemption arc.

Excited for S3. Oh yes indeed.

This season is such a mixed bag of good and meh. Honestly that ending was such an anti-climatic asspull it had me busting my gut in laughter.

I’m glad there’s going to be a third season (a first for Love Live), but seriously I hope they have planned things out better than they did in this season.

  10. K says:

To be honest, I was not happy with how the finale ended up. I’d be like Wien and not accept this outcome, even 😉 . It makes all that drama about going abroad or not utterly pointless and it especially makes Chisato and Kanon’s dilemmas one big joke to me. On top of that, it makes that Academy seem like they made a mistake scouting her or something, hence they really don’t think much of school idols. Thinking of it that way, to me, is very frustrating!

That bad landing aside, this season was enjoyable as expected of this series, even if I would place it lower than NijiGaku’s 2nd. The kouhais were nice additions to the cast. Of the new recruits, Kinako’s my favourite and Natsumi my least but she’s not unlikeable. Wien on the other hand is lucky that there’s a 3rd season as she gets a chance to become more than a plankton in my eyes.

Speaking of, Liella’s quite the history makers, aren’t they? They are the first group to get a third season and due to that they return as defending champions. As such, they are in a prime position of winning it all back to back, a historical feat no one else has achieved. That’d be wonderful to see.

Not the best season finale, no.

Hopefully Wien redeems herself next season.

      Kinako is precious.

Would be fun to see them become the first ever televised two time Love Live champions.
