It is time to check out the second season of the interesting new group in the Love Live! franchise. Their first season was impressive. Let us find out how they followed it up in their second adventure.
WARNING! Contains spoilers of the first season. Check out my review of it HERE.
Genres: Comedy, Drama, Idols, School Life, Slice of Life.
Themes: Music, Yuri
Number of Episodes: 12
Plot Summary: After failing to win the Love Live! tournament Liella got right back up determined to give it another go. This time however, an idea swirled around their minds. One of the school idols’ main goals is to be a ray of happiness and hope for people with open arms. Why not consider recruiting new members and make school idols more appealing to more people?
The main draw besides more Liella. The surprise new first years joining the team. From left to right: Natsumi, Dr Shiki, Kinako and Mei.
As mentioned in the intro Liella are an interesting group. My headcanon is they were created as a response to fans who thought Nijigasaki were too different so Liella was here to go back to basics but with their own special touch. Basics as in how the group came together, the goal to compete in the Love Live tournament and of course save a school from closing down. Even the first five members felt familiar to past legends though naturally they had their unique charms that made them more than worthy of being part of the franchise. This time their quest for gold continued but they would not be a five girl group anymore. Continuing the trend of Love Live! traditions they would recruit four new girls and reach the classic number 9. What set them apart from their predecessors was their journey. Instead of simply trying again one of the important themes of Liella S2 was veterans taking in younglings and teaching them the ways of the school idol, helping not only the newcomers become possible legends in the making like their senpai but the senpai too would grow stronger as guides and proper role models overcoming new obstacles along with some unfinished business from last season.
Kanon and Kinako are pretty much the leaders of the senpai and kouhai groups.
As mentioned both newcomers and veterans have their own individual worries all coming together to try and overcome the biggest challenge of all, learning how to work together as a well tuned school idol cruise ship of supreme happiness. Like any good season of Love Live! every member of the group gets their time to shine. Concerned a veteran is pushed into the background? Be patient. Their time to shine once again will come. Another thing I alluded to was unfinished business from last season. Viewers who remember certain unresolved things from last time can rest assured they are tackled this season with very interesting outcomes. Oh yes indeed.
Back to the first years. It does not take long for them to prove themselves worthy of being part of the group, as in most of them quickly become likable.
Kinako fills the previously empty spot of “the cute one”. That is to me she is the most adorable of all 9. Her cute country girl mannerisms also help.
Mei is the lovechild of two school idol legends. Viewers can guess which two by looking at her. She has her mothers’ traits and talents along with her own unique touch.
Natsumi is an interesting one. She has a similar introduction as Mia Taylor wherein we get small glimpses of her character and story until her big episodes. Without saying too much she has a set goal in mind but how she gets to it and what exactly drives her are why her story is interesting. Depending on the viewer they will understand her appeal from the get-go or it may need to get the full picture first. Either way she too is delightful.
Lastly is my favorite, Dr Shiki. A mad scientist with a big brain and subtle sass. Besides her mannerisms and fun inventions there is another big reason why she is my favorite which we will get to in a moment.
There is actually one more newcomer to the show but it is best for readers to meet her themselves. Without giving away too much all I will say is the things I liked about her were her style and gimmick. That is all.
Love Live! fans know what to expect from the presentation by now. Very colorful and vibrant animation and wonderful musical performances. That being said, in case of newcomers who are not used to my G-Views, specifically of idol anime, I am not a good judge of musical talent. I cannot grade a good idol song from a great one. My thoughts on songs are solely based on how they make me feel. In the case of Love Live I simply tell readers whether I enjoyed the performance or not. In short I enjoyed the new performances with the first years joining in. Each one made me happier than the last seeing the girls come together and doing their best to succeed as a growing team. However, one minor nitpick is despite the senpai saying the kouhai have more work to do to keep up with the senpai during certain performances it never looked to me like the younger girls had a hard time keeping up with their experienced seniors. It did not bother me at all. I just did not notice during performances until they mention it. Again it is a nitpick. The important thing is conveying strong emotions and like always for the franchise this season of Love Live! nails it.
I could go on a detailed explanation about the main event but I will keep it simple. We had one last season. Now we have three. Liella wanted to show NijiGaku aren’t the only yuri powerhouses of the franchise. They made a very strong case this season, OH YES INDEED! When they were introduced Shiki and Mei were the newcomers I was most excited to learn about…They exceeded my expectations. As for the senpai, prepare yourselves. That is all I will say.
One last thing I would kind of count as a flaw. The final conflict and finale could have been done better. I get why it ended that way as I will mention in the conclusion but just because it is “tradition” does not mean you have to pull out every single trope.
Overall Love Live! Superstar!! S2 was more Liella greatness that is sure to please many fans of the group and Love Live as a whole. Eight seasons in and the franchise is still going strong. As always the performance quality is up to viewers but to me they were great as always. The four new girls are excellent additions to the team, the veterans have new and interesting obstacles to overcome and the last new girl I leave to viewers to make their own opinions of her. Normally this is where I would hope for a Liella movie to wrap things up but this group made history at the end of the season…by getting a third one! So yes. Let us continue following their journey in the near future.
PS: Ren is still love. Ren is still life. Bless you Ren.
