My most anticipated episode of the season had come at last.
We joined our heroines stretching as Ren mentioned an upcoming meeting between club presidents. The girls realized they hadn’t picked a president of their own yet. Naturally because she’s the orange haired one Kanon was unanimously nominated by everyone but Kanon herself.
Once again we saw Mei drooling over her favorite idols from afar. The good doctor casually helped her listen in on the conversation. When the lovely redhead noticed she went into tsundere mode again denying Dr Shiki’s “You better join them before it’s too late” with “Are you kidding?! I’m not cut out to be a school idol!”. The important part was Mei saying if she joined Liella the Science Club would get gloomier. Remember this.
Meanwhile Kanon’s still wondering whether to become club president. The reason she hesitated had something to do with thinking about reinventing Liella. She suggested Chisato go for it but the bun cutie said she wasn’t cut out to be the prez. Remember this too. We ended the scene with Doc approaching the girls with a request.
This is revealed later in a sneaky sneak scene over at Mei’s apartment but the reason she has a “scary expression” every time Kinako brought up school idols was because it’s her focused face, as in she had poor eyesight. She couldn’t see very well from a distance but most likely refused to wear glasses.
After Kinako ran off Mei looked for the doctor who left earlier. She went to her laboratory and thought she saw her. We learned Doc was a loner in Middle School before she met Mei and that she promised to open up to more people in high school. As we can see that wasn’t Dr Shiki.
Mei’s vision was narrow but the doc’s was sharp enough to know her sweetie found the double.
Mei couldn’t hide forever and blew her own cover. Dr Shiki introduced Mei as a fangirl from afar but when Kanon asked if they’re friends she didn’t answer. Mei didn’t know how to respond but once she saw Shiki looking glum at her possibly joining Liella she quickly asked if she’s joining them too. When she said “I’m not sure” she stormed off.
This. Just this.
This was from the aforementioned sneaky sneak scene at Mei’s apartment. She’s definitely a diehard Liella and Love Live fan. As mentioned Mei’s narrow sighted and also had a sharp tongue.
Kanon again commented about how well Dr Shiki knew Mei and them being good friends. Doc wasn’t sure as she told their backstory. She’s often alone when one day Mei invited her to go home together. She refused. To the doctor’s surprise Mei again came to her. She said crowds were complicated and felt more comfortable being around her. Mei playing along with her science experiments despite them creeping her out made the good doctor very happy. Chisato realized the reason she joined Liella was for Mei’s sake. Plus she knew part of the reason Mei didn’t join herself was her not wanting to leave Shiki alone. Doc wondered why force herself to stay by her side. Later she confronted Mei about it ending with the doctor pushing her away. Classic “Set them free the hard way” argument.
During the argument Chisato heard Mei say she couldn’t become a school idol because she “didn’t have what it took”. It reminded her of when she too didn’t believe in herself. Thanks to her future wife she found the courage to go big. That same courage led to her big swerve of becoming the club president, breaking tradition. Then again Kanon’s still team captain so technically not broken. NijiGaku don’t count because their leader has black/green hair. Anyway Kanon used her experience as a gay senpai to guide her gay kouhai to find her big brain girlfriend and make up. She knew full well Dr Shiki didn’t really not want her around. The fact was they’re made for each other because they’re very much alike. Fellow loners afraid to open up to others, including themselves.
To sum up their glorious scene Mei gave her big brain sweetie a taste of her own medicine and they joined Liella together. Both had the skills but needed each other to push them forward to greatness.
Worth the wait. Love Shiki even more now and the two are a great couple.
I haven’t talked about Natsumi’s brief appearances because like Mia I’m waiting for her episode to reveal her story. We won’t have to wait long because it’s coming next time. Most likely about her struggling content creator career.
