Aquatope of White Sand Episode 15: Operation Sea Slug

The real title “The Great Sea Slug Debate” will make sense near the climax of the episode.

Fuuka and Kukuru lunch break

The Assistant Director was at it again this episode. While Kukuru was working her desk job he came out of the blue to come up with an attraction for a project presentation assignment. Naturally she called him a slave driver but Fuuka, her angel, said it’s a good opportunity for guests to learn more about sea critters. This motivated Kukuru and she came up with several ideas. AD asked which one they could do in two weeks time and Kukuru picked sea slugs. She planned to present at least five but AD wanted eight. When she said eight would be tough he said the customers were more important than the concerns of the staff. Remember this for later.

Kai's sadnessLet’s briefly go over the Kai stuff. While Kukuru went around seeking help with the sea slugs she came to Kai for assistance. Naturally he thought this was a great chance to make a move especially after Eiji suggested he do so. As we can see here his hopes for greatness were dashed.

Kukuru happily gathering sea slugsIt was nice seeing Kukuru have fun working if for a brief moment. After all, she got to interact with sea critters.

Kukuru sees the sea slugs aren't eatingI said the fun times were brief as Kukuru came across some problems. First up as expected Kaoru wasn’t pleased with the the eight sea slugs thing arguing with her over the needs of attendants. Then there was the unexpected dilemma of some sea slugs not eating the gathered food despite having done research on what they eat. Kukuru was so worried she almost forgot about her scheduled tour were it not for Fuuka.

Kukuru vs Kaoru debateAt last it was time for the titular debate between Kukuru and Kaoru. I won’t go over every detail but to sum it up it was an interesting one going over the purpose of an aquarium, the right way to care for sea critters and responsibilities. Both sides had good points. It ended in a draw after Kaoru asked “Why sea slugs?” and Kukuru said “because they’re cool” along with a passionate elaboration. Kaoru realized at the end of the day they both had a mutual love for sea critters. Although the presentation wasn’t perfect it was still pretty good. Kaoru was impressed enough to invite Kukuru to a certain shore. Will we get to see their outing? Find out next time.

Good stuff.

I could mention Kuuya’s shock upon learning the obvious “Kaoru’s a woman” fact but the highlight was even Eiji not knowing how to react to Kuuya’s behavior around Kaoru afterward. As for Chiyu I’m like “Let’s get to her backstory or drama already so we can move on”. I still don’t care about her. As I said her drama has to be jaw dropping and even then I don’t know if I’ll warm up to her.

Another good episode, a little light on our favorite couple aka Fuuka and Kukuru but I still liked that they had a moment together!

I definitely like that Kukuru is doing her absolute best which is cute and that she really cares for the animal life in the aquarium. Hopefully she can stick it to that dang manager and Chiyu! Also looks like Kukuru has gotten on the good side of Kaoru which is a good step! You go Kukuru!!!

Overall a good episode and I can’t wait for more!

Yes. Need more of them together.

Kukuru’s doing her best and that’s awesome.

Hopefully Kaoru will be friendlier to her from now on. She’s not a mean babe.

Yes more Fuuka Kukuru is absolutely welcome cause they are absolutely adorable together!!!

Kukuru doing her best always makes me smile!

And yes I think Kaoru has opened up a bit to Kukuru which is great!

Most of the staff in Tingaara have some redeeming qualities with the only exceptions being Chiyu and Kukuru’s boss. Not sure if those two will ever change but if Kukuru has more successes like today then she will command more respect from the other staff. I do think that Kukuru formed an understanding with Kaoru so that was a win right there.

More generally though the fact Kukuru is so hardworking and passionate about her work will resonate with many staff and will allow them to overlook her more stubborn and emotional tendencies.

Things are definitely on the up that I worry there will be some drama or worse, a major road block. Then again such a thing could be a trigger for more Kukuru/Fuuka moments!

So far so good. Kukuru’s career is going as well as we hoped it would. Keep it up girl!

Yes there will surely be another major roadblock at some point which will hopefully mean Kukuru X Fuuka growing even stronger.

It’s unfortunate that Kukuru’s boss is still an insufferable a-hole. The way he reacted to one of the sea slug not being on display and yelling at her. He represents whats wrong with capitalism as he only cares about the all mighty dollar instead of the welfare of the animals. He would rather have the sea slugs starve on display than have Kukuru figure. I hope he receives some type of retribution from his terrible behavior or Kukuru proves herself.

Still, surprising that Kaoru is redeemable. The said sadly can’t be said about Chiyu. She will never change.

    • OG-Man says:

Precisely. He does a good job being an unlikable douche. Hopefully he gets what’s coming to him or SOMEHOW stops being a pain.

Unlike Chiyu Kaoru wasn’t super mean when she first appeared, just focused on the task at hand over being social. When she realized Kukuru and her shared some common ground she lightened up.

I hate that assistant director, or should I say “ASS-istant director”? Because he’s such an ass! Kukuru was proving herself to be useful and was doing her good job, and yet he was saying that she failed him again. All he cared about is perfection, and he claims that she is doing far from perfection. Why do I get the feeling that he is about to fire her?

    • OG-Man says:

He serves his purpose as the antagonistic superior, representing annoying bosses/superiors in real life. He’s supposed to be a pain. I don’t like him either but I get why he’s there.

i thought the anime may have exaggerated the colorfulness of the various sea slugs, but after seeing some real photos online they are indeed as “unnaturally” beautiful as portrayed in the anime.

  6. Nick says:

The ups and downs of the office life continue for our girl Kukuru. She’s hanging in there though, barely making it by, but she’s got help as well.

I’m sure all this drama will come to a boiling point and we’ll learn why everyone is the way they are, but until then it can be frustrating to watch. Kukuru and Fuuka are trying their best but this isn’t Gama Gama and the business side is more noticeable at Tingaara. Hopefully by the end all this chaos will be worth it.

Looking forward to what’s in store next week. Or should I say, tomorrow.
