Looks like the show will follow a similar episode format as Season 2 where the next couple of episodes will focus on the new girls’ story and eventually we’ll rejoin the Hero Club. For now we’ll be following the “Mebuki Kuzunoki wa Yuusha de Aru” spinoff novel.
As always no spoilers of the novel in the comments.
After a recap of the last moments of the last episode we got a flashback of the new girls centered around the lead girl, Mebuki. I assume this flashback took place sometime after Gin fell in battle. The Taisha reps summoned the candidates where only one would be chosen to become the next Hero. Mebuki was a super serious type. Based on her flashback she devoted her youth to training to become a Hero so she could prove it’s all worth it and she could get the recognition of her father. One of his lessons she took to heart was to not become anyone’s stepping stone.
During training she’s approached by a prideful ojou-sama, Yumiko. Her goal to become a Hero was to bring pride to the Miroku family name. Mebuki didn’t think much of her goal but kinda found her amusing.
Yumiko considered Mebuki her #1 raivaru until her attention was grabbed the next day by a familiar warrior, Karin. Seeing her awesome skills she declared her her #1 raivaru. Karin was like “Whatever makes you happy”. Karin noticed Mebuki focused on her.
That night Karin approached her to have an exhibition but Mebuki felt she wasn’t at Karin’s level yet. Basically both wanted to prove that all their intense training was worthwhile but it was clear Mebuki was more fixated on winning than becoming a Hero.
During a serious match Mebuki bested Karin. She’s convinced she’d be chosen but to her shock Lord Yusha chose Karin. Again Mebuki was more focused on winning while Karin’s focus was more in what they’re looking for. Mebuki took the Taisha’s decision well.
Sometime after the end of Season 1 all the girls not chosen that day were summoned again. They’re shown the world beyond the wall and told the reason for their summoning. As the newly assigned “Sentinels” they were to explore the world beyond and find a new one to plant another “Tree of Life” so humanity could find another fertile habitat.
Two more of the main five, Shizuku on the left, who seemed like a “If it is the will of the gods it shall be done” kind of girl and Suzume on the right who was a coward.
The last main character was Aya the miko of the Sentinel force. There isn’t much to say yet about the five girls because after the three were introduced we skipped ahead to the Sentinels set to embark on their mission. I assume their relationships will be explored in the coming episodes.
The rest of the episode can be best described as Starship Troopers: Teenage Girls Edition as the Sentinels were attacked by a swarm of Stardust type Vertex as soon as they exited the barrier. Lots of intense action and terrified girls with the leader Mebuki no longer being self-centered doing her best to lead the troops to victory and ensure no lives were lost. It’s better seen than described. Intense stuff.
I look forward to learning more about our five new heroines next time.
