Elma gets the spotlight for more than one segment.
Part 1 featured Elma on a quest to convince the company boss to give employees fairer working conditions. Despite Miss Kobayashi (The narrator of the story) and Bobby not rally minding, possibly a message about office employees accustomed to working long hours out of habit (Not exactly a workaholic), they were like “Elma’s got a point”. However, the boss wouldn’t budge. Elma tried again and again, each time providing stronger arguments. At one point she almost crossed the line of personal privacy.
After several attempts the boss surprised Miss Kobayashi and Bobby by calling them to his office along with Elma. We learned their boss was Shouta the shota’s dad. He had an intimidating presence from the get-go and was quite shrewd. The two worried he’d fire them but instead he thanked them for hanging out with his son. Sadly Elma was again denied her plea.
I don’t need to explain the punchline because this is an Elma episode. Fans of the series should have expected the reason for Elma’s determination being “THAT”.
Part 2 featured the cuties and Shouta the shota paying Elma a visit. They asked her to take them camping because they needed an adult to accompany them. Actually Tohru recommended her to them. Elma accepted so she could show off her reliability to Tohru. More on that in Part 3.
To the surprise of no one familiar with this setup the kids disappeared while Elma was chilling. They went deep into the forest to help Shouta look for specific plants. Elma hoped her clairvoyance power (She could observe up to thousands of people) would help find them but Shouta, who was used to Lucoa using a similar power on him, blocked it. Worried Tohru would mock her for her failure she frantically searched for them, not knowing Shouta planned ahead having a way back to camp.
Fortunately everything worked out in the end.
Part 3 then. Remember what I said about Elma worried Tohru would mock her should she fail to take care of the kids? Well this being an Elma episode the writers decided to continue with her and Tohru’s backstory, specifically Elma’s long struggle. She wanted to “work out her ring rust” with Tohru and had Fafnir and Miss Kobayashi moderate the battle. In reality she wanted to settle something that’d boiled for ages. The day Tohru abandoned her. The betrayal ran deep, made worse by Tohru constantly acting mean to her whenever they crossed paths in our world.
Surprisingly the last straw was when she found out about Tohru still helping the maids at the cafe from time to time. When Tohru brought up Elma’s developing god complex back then she’s like “How could you, a dragon who despised humans, who said she’d only socialize with a select few, suddenly act all chummy with many? You, who looked down on me for wanting to do the same long ago. Why do you hate me so!? WHY CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS AGAIN!?” They made up and had a friendly exhibition afterward. Fafnir thought he’d bare witness to a grudge match but left after realizing he wasn’t needed. Miss Kobayashi meanwhile had a feeling there wouldn’t be any malice in this battle. She was used to seeing dragons clash after all.
Good stuff as always. Next time a Kanna episode, but what’s this? A girl who isn’t Riko?
