This was the most intriguing of my Spring picks as I had no idea what to expect. I said that so long as it focused on the girls I’d give it a go. The premiere did just that so let’s see what we got.
We began with a glimpse of the shadow nobles, or whatever their titles were, their living quarters, the black snow like soot outside and emanated from them and other stuff. We then got a a preview of the five Living Dolls who would serve their shadow masters.
The first pair we were introduced to were our main leads, Mistress Kate and her maid who didn’t have a name yet. More on that later.
The reason for Kate’s anxiousness was she felt anxious around her doll. She also didn’t like to be stared at directly as shadows’ faces couldn’t be seen. She also avoided an “Are you human?” question when her doll asked.
Her doll eagerly wanted to serve as best as she could but she’s clumsy and couldn’t read. The clumsiness initially came from not understanding she needed food to function despite being a doll. Understanding the situation Kate gifted her with her quality bread. Her doll said she wasn’t worthy but Kate insisted.
This scene here where the doll overslept after a fun time with Kate the day prior showed Kate’s feelings for her doll grew and her tardiness aggravated her. Sense of loneliness, yes.
After cleaning up her room of soot Kate had her wash up. The reason being besides being their servants the dolls’ other purpose was to be the shadows’ faces, essentially to give them an idea what they’d look like were they to have a “normal” face. In short, they served as their identities. For this reason the dolls must be clean and tidy at all times. Her doll missed a spot while washing so Kate used it as the perfect opportunity to play dress up with her despite it being forbidden to do so. We learned that at some point every shadow noble would get their own doll.
Long story short Kate grew to like her doll and wanted her to feel wanted and appreciated. Neither one felt anxious around the other and Kate’s “sooting” stopped. Not only that but the doll’s wish, to see Kate’s face, came true though Kate disliked putting makeup on. In the end Kate found a name for her doll, Emilico. We ended the episode as Emilico was about to clean a soot outside the window and spotted another master and doll pair. The doll however, didn’t look too friendly.
The show definitely has my attention. Looking forward to more.
I especially want to get to know this pair.
