Otherside Picnic Episode 10: In-Between

I don’t have a hook for this one. Let’s just get right to it.

Foggy mirror image

We joined Sorawo in the bathroom washing up but when she looked in the mirror without her glasses she caught a faint glimpse of “herself” with long hair. Remember, Akari mentioned last time Sorawo looked like Satsuki. This would be brought up again later. Before she had a chance to think about it the phone rang.

Sorawo talks about the soldiers at Kisaragi StationToriko invited her out for a BBQ dinner along with Kozakura and Akari. The latter had Sorawo scratching her head. Once again she’s protective of her one and only spot by Toriko’s side. She was like “Why didn’t she call me?” and Toriko replied “She did but you never picked up.”. Sorawo remembered she hardly answered the phone. Then for some reason she brought up the soldiers at Kisaragi Station because Kozakura was on her way. Sorawo knew Toriko wanted to rescue them. Toriko thought Sorawo said there’s no way back there but she thought about Lady Hasshaku’s hat being a potential portal back there but before she could elaborate Akari called.

Weird phone callLong creepy call summarized, Akari couldn’t find the restaurant, thought she saw our heroines in front of her, couldn’t hear the real heroines shouting “That’s not us!” and hung up to follow them. Left with no other option they went to look for her.

Kozakura complaining againWe learned that there was more than one elevator to Otherside. As they got into the elevator Kozakura rushed over for some sweet BBQ…until changing her tune once the two revealed where they’re really heading. During her delightful rambling the important remarked, seen up there, was asked. Remember this for later.

Akari following someone who looked like SorawoThis remark told me it’s a while before everyone got together for BBQ.

About where our heroines ended up this time. It’s a location called in-between, which, as it’s called, was between “our world” and “Otherside”. It’s like a big labyrinth with lots of creepy imagery here and there such as a a jump scare mirror, the creepy dolls or the eyeless photos. Dunno what they all mean but I assume they signified something. Not sure what but they’re there for a reason. Eventually they caught up to Akari who, either in a trance or not, followed a long haired woman who she thought looked like Sorawo. In the Post-ED chibi skit we learned Sorawo decided not to let her hair grow, hence why I think this episode was set a while after the last one.

Cloud of DarknessThe monster this time was a cameo by Cloud of Darkness. It was too strong to shoot at so our heroines fled. Kozakura even considered sacrificing herself for the team. More on this in a bit. The girls got to the elevator but the cloud gave them a false sense of security before pouncing on them.

Back of Satsuki's head

Sorawo was the first to get up after that. What awaited her behind the elevator though may as well have been the Netherrealm. Sorawo was like “Screw that terrifying lady and Hellscape I’m getting us outta here!”

Sorawo hands Toriko her glove back

We ended the episode with another cute moment as Toriko pointed out how not only Sorawo changed by caring more about others but Kozakura cared too deep down.

Neat episode.

I have to admit that this episode was really creepy. Yes, the in-between world is creepier than the Urasekai itself, which is filled with its weirdness. Still, it’s good that they found Akari. Still, I don’t know why she didn’t stay put instead of go out searching for Sorawo.

Yes, I guess long hair doesn’t suit Sorawo since she looks too much like Satsuki. At least Toriko is okay with her keeping the same hair style. Then again, seeing long haired Sorawo is a bit creepy. Still, I have a feeling the lady in the hellscape might be Satsuki.

A really fantastic episode~ The levels of terror and other stuff felt closest to how the LNs are out of the entire anime so far. If only this sort of technique had been utilized for all the episodes….oh well. It’s been a greatly enjoyable time nonehteless.

    Kozakura is ❤

Every episode is made better by her screentime~

strange things were happening with their otherside attachments this episode. Doesn’t bode well for what they may encounter in the future. It’s amusing that Akari has been the source of jealousy from both ends now (though I can’t recall if the anime showed Toriko’s jealousy or not….so sorry if I brought up something from the LN, it should have happened by now…probably. I lose track of what happened when).

Guess we’re maybe going to finish out with the final chapter of LN 2. Makes it simpler to go straight into reading the LN from where I left off, at least.

Another good and creepy ep this week! The later at night you watch it, the scarier it gets!

I thought it was a bit random for them to suddenly bring up Kisaragi Station as a topic of discussion. It didn’t really seem like they had any deep attachment to the soldiers there, more like they were just others they met along the way in their travels. I mean yeah I get that helping others is good and all, but to suddenly want to go back there again just seems so out of left field all of a sudden.

Akari hasn’t had a good time since joining Toriko and Sorawo on their adventures.

Kozakura also hasn’t had a good time whenever she comes along for the ride too.

Some more cute Toriko and Sorawo moments too that are always nice to see.

Good stuff this week. Looking forward to next time!

Yeah. No idea why they brought it up unless it was connected to the “caring for others” thing later.

Poor dear. At least she can fend for herself and somehow trigger a killer instinct with Sorawo’s ability.

Kozakura having a bad time seems to be a given for her every time she joins our main duo.

      That they are.

      Same.

My best guess is this was the way the director decided to make up for skipping said plot earlier (This should have definitely happened already….). I mean….I was pretty sure they already showed the Hasshaku hat disappear….The LN does a better job of opening up to this arc, but ah well. We did get a neat anime original out of it.

Toriko sometimes does this blank, animatronic response thing, like lights on, nobody home and I dunno if that’s just ‘blonde moment’ type characterization or supposed to be ominous like her perception of reality has been messed with a little.

Didn’t hair+monster Satsuki show up at the station too during that episode? I can’t remember, they might be trying to arrange another meeting with the throwback, hence the heavy-handed Sorawo is selfish dialogue that felt a bit too hamfisted and not at all how I’ve seen her? Jaded and realistic? Yes. But it’s not a bad personality trait to not blindly run to save everyone at the expense of your own well-being.

Didn’t they use the hat to escape from the Otherside and lose it in the process?
