Otherside Picnic Episode 2: The Foggy Search

When we last left our heroines they had barely survived another battle against a Wiggle-Waggle. They would soon discover that battle affected them more than they thought.

Toriko X Sorao kabedon

A kabedon already? My goodness Miss Toriko.

Toriko's transparent hand

Not only did Sorao’s eye turn blue from looking directly at the Wiggle-Waggle for a long time but Toriko’s hand became translucent after ripping the monster’s “hair” off of Sorao. They agreed to visit the “Otherside expert” Toriko knew for help.

Looks like Kozakura here wasn’t Satsuki as I previously thought. We would learn a bit more about her appearance later. Back to Kozakura. She reacted as one would expect seeing our heroines’…changes. She categorized contact with “them” as “close encounters of the fourth kind”. Satsuki taught Toriko and Kozakura everything they knew about Otherside. Toriko was close with Satsuki. More on this in a bit.

Kozakura examines the cube

While Kozakura paid them for the Wiggle-Waggle cube she didn’t know enough about “them” to help our heroines with their conditions. Sorao wondered if she was trustworthy and Toriko assured her she’d help them out because Satsuki trusted her.

Jealous Sorao

Sorao was like “You and that Satsuki woman must have been real close, huh?” Toriko was like “Most important person in my life. In fact, I’m glad I met you because now you can help me look for her!” Since then Sorao was mega jelly. So much so that despite being unable to walk away from Toriko she acted cold towards her. Toriko naturally didn’t appreciate it.

Strange man

Before they got into an argument a strange man pointed a machine gun at them. At first he stopped them from triggering a trap but he got weird(er) when he mistook Sorao for his wife Michiko. Clearly a sign of someone who spent way too much in “Otherside”. The “stranded hobo” archetype. Think of movies like Jumanji and Cast Away as examples. Like the men in those movies this guy was barely sane as his wife was disappeared one evening. He looked all over and eventually theorized she’d been “spirited away”. He researched as much as he could until discovering an Otherside portal at a shrine. He figured “they” abducted her and searched for her ever since. Since both he and Toriko were looking for someone important he inserted himself into the group to search with them.

Sorao watches Toriko and the guy walking off

They spotted footprints in foggy woods leading to a mansion. As Sorao watched them head inside she thought she didn’t belong because she wasn’t looking for anyone important…as she solemnly looked at Toriko. However, she noticed the footprints weren’t human and was about to run away but thinking about her harsh attitude towards Toriko changed her mind.

Lady Hasshaku

Inside the mansion the three encountered what appeared to be Lady Hasshaku. Both the hobo and Toriko described Michiko and Satsuki as women with long black hair. The hobo didn’t stand a chance.

Sorao calling out to Toriko

Sorao tried to snap Toriko from Lady Hasshaku’s trance but it was no use. She wanted her Satsuki. Sorao could takes it no more and called out to Toriko.

Where have I seen this relationship dynamic before? Yeah. I know. Some viewers noticed the similarities last time.

Toriko snapping Sorao out of her trance

In a neat twist that made sense it was Sorao who was in a trance. The path to yuri had truly begun for our former loner.

Lady Hasshaku's scary face

Oh dear.

Toriko can make contact with the monsters

With Toriko’s translucent hand being able to make contact with “them” and Sorao’s blue eye they defeated the monster.

It had begun. Good stuff.

You know me. Animation quality is usually the last thing on my mind.

One of the ultra rare times you aren’t praising a loli.

Supposedly the show is currently following the source closely so I assume you’re right.

I mean, Kozakura’s a legal loli. Even if you didn’t notice that with what we’ve seen so far, it’ll become clear with time 🙂

Yeah, I know, and I don’t really get affected greatly by it, just realize that that is one thing that really can affect how successful a show is.

It definitely is following it closely from what I remember. Though we’re getting the parties in that after ED style, which is a slight let down, but ah well. The best parts are being done well, so that’s what matters.

The Zone knows your secret Sorawo, you can’t hide from it. :3

Hope they do Sorawo’s gay panic some justice in the next episode.

I like how they changed Abarato’s looks from tactical to more………..hobo, looks way more fitting for an everyday guy who’s lost in Zone and slowly losing his mind.

Also, Abarato dunking the bolt into a glitch and referring to the Otherside as “The Zone” are direct references to STALKER………makes me giddy.

Yes, Toriko really tricked us thinking that she is going to do something intimate to Sorawo. Still, it’s obvious that there are signs that she is falling for her.

Either way, this episode looked better than the first.

Oh, Sorawo quickly get fixated about Toriko since she probably the pretties and funniest person she meet, and with difficulty to admit in this short time her day were betters.

And here I was hoping not to be a week late to each post. Oh boy…

Chin in hand to open the ep, off to a great start! Toriko is quite assertive indeed!

This ep got pretty scary actually. Not sure if watching this late at night will be a good idea going forward, but that’s the only time I can watch it.

Excited for more of this show and the mysteries it brings!

I really like Kozakura both her design and her voice.
Yes, this seems like it will be a spookier version of Flip Flappers and I’m good with it.
The bluff where they made us thing that Toriko was under the effect of that monster when in fact it was Sorao was really good. Also while fighting a supernatural monster is not the best moment to realise you are gay but it’s a start.
