D4DJ First Mix Episode 1: Jungle Girl in the DJ City

The time has come to talk about the premiere of the last show on my Fall 2020 watchlist. Let’s find out what awaits.

Note: The animation is by the same studio that worked on BanG Dream Seasons 2 and 3 so the characters are all CG.

Note 2: The “D4” in the brand stands for “Dig Delight Direct Drive“.

Note 3: Strobe lights warning.

Hanayo and Nico cameo

Dood! Kayo-chin and Nico cameo!

Fancy school

A recurring theme this season in Girls Club shows has been really fancy schools as if the anime want to tell us “See? No need for the ‘save the school’ setup here yo.”

Rinku Monkey

Rinku, our main girl and the “Kasumi” of the series. She was born in Japan but because of her parents’ work (a zoologist and an entomologist)

Puffy

We may have found the “Arisa” though will she fall madly in love with Rinku remains to be seen. Most likely the black and gold haired girl will be her soul mate.

During lunch a sweet beat played on the radio. Rinku recognized it and dashed to find the source.

Rinku scolded

Because it’s in the genki code of ethics to be a lovable troublemaker. She does have a solid excuse for her hyperactivity and lack of media knowledge. She spent most of her childhood in the jungle with monkeys. Later the two, Rinku and Maho(pi) got better acquainted. Don’t get why we had to see Rinku’s silly first impression a 2nd time but no biggie. It’s funny. Anyway Rinku wanted to know about the music but when Maho tried explaining what DJs (disc jockeys) were all about she had a delightfully blank stare. Best have her see it in person.

Peaky P-Key

Conveniently a concert was in full swing so she didn’t have to wait long to see a DJ and performers in action in “Peaky P-Key”. Rinku was so amazed she’s like “I wanna do that too!”

Rinku paying Maho to help her

Maho said it’d be really difficult but Rinku’s like “Oho. You require payment, do you?”. Unfortunately “jungle currency” wouldn’t fly in Japan.

Maho took them anyway

But Maho took them anyway. They were shiny seashells after all. Still, she saw the spark in her eyes and agreed to help.

Happy Around!

Rinku’s catchphrase and victory pose. She’s no idea how she came up with it. They went to the music studio and we learned the school prided itself in “Thuganomics”. Not exactly that but as long you visit this blog we shall refer to it as that.

Rinku's gift

While Maho gave her a crash course in Thuganomics Rinku revealed her gift, music synchronization within her body. Basically she could “feel the beat” in her body.

Cool Chicks

Hopefully we get to see them on the show and not just as background inspiration characters.

Next time Maho will find out if Rinku’s power is the key to superstardom. Good premiere. I like what I see. No gayness yet but there’s plenty of time. I’m sure some already plan on shipping Rinku with Maho.

Very cute, especially the seashell currency. It was adorable how the value of the final spiky shell was clearly shown on Rinku’s face ^^

CG works perfectly for this show. And that reminds me… Still dreaming of a second season of Houseki no Kuni ^^

Betcha Maho would be super rich back in Tiotio.

Hopefully one day we will suffer once more. Surprised you crave more pain.

I’m also surprised that I crave more of that pain… it seems to depend on the story. Perhaps it just depends on how it all ends ^^ I liked the pain in 22/7, whereas Madoka Magica and Happy Sugar Life left me mostly sad. Higurashi was amazing but I decided not to go through that again this year. And I detest Neon Genesis Evangelion with all my might. Difficult to say what the common thread is, but there we go ^^

I also want another season of Houseki no Kuni so that I can see more of that darling Obsidian, although I’m of course terrified that something might happen to her.

The final hype show of the season is finally here!

Enjoyed this opening ep. Rinku is cute and full of energy, she’ll be a blast to watch, I can tell.

The attention to detail in the DJ equipment and the laptop is insane. They really went all out with it. Nice to see they putting that effort into a show about DJing.

I get the feeling there will be a lot of great music in this show and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the full versions of the songs.

Hyped for more, even though I’m guessing it’ll be a 2 week wait as ep 1 will officially air next week? Could be wrong though.

Oh and not sure if you knew about this, but the Twitter hashtag for this show (#D4DJ) has it’s own little icon that goes with it. Really cool. Wish more shows did that.

Kasumi passed the baton to a worthy new genki protagonist, yes.

Quality CG animation here. How far it has come. So nice.

If the songs in this episode were any indication then the insert songs will be sweet for sure.

Yup. Most likely will have to wait over a week for the next episode. Was worth watching early though.

Oh yes. I saw it. Maho’s head is a cute touch. More anime should incorporate cute heads in their hashtags, yes.

I enjoyed the premiere very much. Great CG animation. Catchy music. I don’t know about DJ so I’m ready to learn more about it. Another fancy school. With DJ live room and DJ booth. The school put a lot of faith in DJing. Now we don’t have to see Kasu-, I mean Rinku broke because she has to buy DJ equipment. Not much to see regarding the yuri yet, still a long way to go. Although Maho x Rinku seems cute. Fun fact, Peaky P-Key singer, cool performance by the way, and Kasumi shared the same seiyuu.

      Good stuff so far, yes.

Fancy schools appears to be a theme this season.

Especially since Rinku came from an African island.

It took a bit for the yuri in BanG Dream to take off too so let’s wait and hope for the best.

Nice fun fact about Kasumi and the PP singer.

Honestly for me the most shocking part is how good the show looks. I’m usually not a fan of this animation style but this company seems to get better every season. I just rewatched bang dream season 2 and seems like they have come a long way. And definitely shipping the main duo.

  6. Rinku is basically a genki girl, but IN OVERDRIVE and I love her for it.

Interesting so far and with great music.
Not a massive fan of the CG characters but I guess that just takes a bit to get used to it.
