Adachi and Shimamura Episode 1: Water

The most highly anticipated show on the blog is here at last. Let’s check out the premiere and see what awaits.

As always, no manga or Light Novel spoilers in the comments. Not even a passerby remark.

Adachi mesmerized

Indeed.

We started the show with our heroines Adachi (blue) and Shimamura (blonde) playing ping-pong on the upper floor of the gymnasium. Just two girls skipping classes to chill. To their surprise it was gym period. As they took cover Shimamura jokingly suggested they jump out of the window. Adachi of course worried over broken bones. However, she was briefly mesmerized by Shimamura’s lips. Time went on.

Sweaty Adachi

A nice touch was the episode switching between Adachi and Shimamura’s inner narration. For the majority of it we followed Shimamura.

Hino groping Nagafuji

Later we were introduced to Hino (petite) and Nagafuji (stacked). They serve the role of “buddies of the lesbian protagonist”. Shimamura, in short, described them as her silly friends. Hopefully they can be shipped together as more than gal pals with benefits, mostly on Hino’s end.

Shimamura pondering

Let’s focus on the inner monologue for a bit. Of our two leads Shimamura seems to be more open (in her head) about her feelings for Adachi but is understandably not ready to make a move because she’s worried about what happens between people who are very close.

Lots of visual metaphors and gazes that speak louder than words throughout the episode.

Gay delinquents

#GayDelinquents

It didn’t matter that they were delinquents. They enjoyed chilling together. On a whim Adachi gave Shimamura a ride to her place. She now knew where she lived. Also I think Adachi can drive but doesn’t have a license yet.

Awkward

The next day the two were at their usual spot when they got a surprise visit from Hino and Nagafuji who figured out their hiding place. This scene up here speaks volumes, especially for people who can relate to Adachi. I can. I’m 32 years old and still find myself in moments like this. I need not go in great detail. It’s something both simple and deep at the same time.

Adachi arrived in time

After that day Shimamura seriously thought it was over between them. Adachi didn’t help matters by not talking to her and only running into her by pure luck. There was nothing to worry about. Just teenage awkwardness.

Pretty ShimamuraAdachi mesmerized Again

Again Shimamura is more open with her feelings but Adachi got bit by the gay bug too. She’s just shy and socially awkward around everyone but Shimamura.

We had a feeling this would be a slow burn love story and this premiere confirmed it. The difference between this and OshiBudo is OB is a wacky comedy while AdaShima is a chill romance. It’s nice to watch a show like this after being bombarded with shows where lesbians have to put their lives on the line in hopes of finding love at the end. Here the struggle is real but a lot more grounded. Pretty good stuff. The mainstream love the wackiness but hopefully there are enough of you in the mood for some chill gayness.

Adachi and Shimamura lewd

Oh but worry not. The ED and next episode preview assured us it won’t be too long before the heat slowly cranks up between our heroines.

Loli astronaut

PS: I hope to learn more about the mysterious loli astronaut in due time.

  1. Highly anticipated indeed and I was not disappointed. I think it’s obvious that this is going to be the highlight yuri of this season, possibly even year. What I do want to appreciate though is that Adachi and Shimamura are really unique as far as yuri couples go and I don’t think we’ve seen another pair quite like them. I really like their delinquent bond and their dynamic is also very fresh. Seeing their relationship progress in time will surely be a treat, so I’m not even perturbed by the slow burn. The preview for next week has me very excited, as it seems things will definitely be heating up faster than I expected, but of course I’m sure our journey will still be an expansive one. I’m sure it’ll be worth it though. Shi’s two friends seem pretty fun too and the astronaut loli is intriguing.

Honestly, the slow burn is what drew me to the story to begin with and the anime captures that perfectly. There doesn’t seem to really be a “we were strangers and now we love each other” moment. It seems to flow (like water, excuse the episodic title reference) much more slowly and, in my opinion, naturally. In short…I LOVE IT!

Solid first episode, tho the pacing was a bit, off but that can’t be helped unless they wanted to stray a bit from the source material. Still, it was great to see the scenes come to life on screen, especially the ever-so-thirsty Adachi.

I’m good with the slow burn as long as I know upfront it’s gonna take the romance somewhere. Like OshiBudo, that was a fun show, but we kind of knew from the outset it was never REALLY gonna get serious. BiY, on the other hand, just kept raising the temperature in such a tantalizing way I couldn’t help but love it (still praying for season 2!).

So I’m hoping Adachi to Shimamura will be closer to a BiY sort of progression. Excited to see more!

    A great premiere!

Man this show is really pretty to look at.

I really like slow burns, as long as it is told well I’m totally down for some slow burn.

Looking forward to more and of course the loli astronaut.

The show looks absolutely beautiful, the girls are gorgeous, and I want nothing more than for them to have a slow-developing but passionate love without any unnecessary side complications. This will definitely be one of my favourites and could even become one of the all time yuri anime… especially since I find both heroines very attractive and charming and mysterious, something which was not true (for me personally) for many of the other yuri shows (like Bloom Into You, Citrus, Aoi Hana or Sasameki Koto). Finally another yuri anime where both girls are ultra feminine and adorable! ^^

    Just one thing:
If the TV broadcast is of this quality, what is blu-ray going to be?

Somebody, anybody, please protecc this cute Adatsi creature, she’s going through a hard time. Although she’s incredibly cute, I still prefer her longer hair in the manga.

Nagafuji, oh Nagafuji, what’ve they done to her. I feel like she’s been purposefully sexualized in the anime with her disproportionately large boo-boos which is VERY off putting in my view.
    psssst, read the original manga

also, as for her “portrayal”, keep in mind this is what Shimamura thinks of her, it’s not necessarily true. When someone is off your radar/not really on your focus, you can get a very different impression of them. EIther way, I’ve not read any of the manga nor LN, so I have no idea what goes on. Just, the episode presented very clearly that in Shimamura’s eyes: You have plain girl, and big boobed glasses girl.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re that one dimensional (and that’ll probably be a plot point at some juncture)

I don’t see how the licence bit is relavent? Even if she had a licence, or a car, the cycle is a good, practical transportation option capable of carrying many types of passengers of all ages. Given the right infrastructure, like is given in excess to drivers. And they come in many forms like cargo. And she can choose not to drive, up to her preferred max distance. This nuance is sorely missing from North America, Oceania, etc.

It’s not “missing”, the option is always there. No one has to drive. And no one needs a license for a bike. Lots of people bike instead of driving, but lots of people also have to commute across very long distances to work, and using a bike would mean riding a bike for at the very very least, 2 hours there, and then 2 hours back. Some could go as high as 5 hours there and 5 hours back. And you can see why bikes aren’t as big a thing. For people who live closer to where they go, walking/biking are actually pretty popular.

I may have misunderstood what you were stating though, so I apologize if so.

The first episode was fun, but it’s not too surprising to see the relationship develop gradually given how shy Adachi is. Still, the moments with Adachi and Shimamura are fun.

Yes, the preview does kind of make the next episode a bit more interesting with that scene.

Oh, this probably will be the most detailed about the proceed to fall in love, that why is had a lot monologues and metaphores, the scene when Shimamura pretend to ignore Adachi was a bit painfull until they resolve

I think I somehow missed the memo that this was going to be a slow burn romance show. Yes I watched a PV for it so maybe I’m just forgetting about it or whatever, but this didn’t go how I expected it would. But of course that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it.

I liked your point about it’s nice to have a more grounded love story that’s chill to watch after having a lot of “shows where lesbians have to put their lives on the line in hopes of finding love at the end.” It’s a nice breath of fresh air I think and one that’s not going to get me all worked up while watching before bed time. Although all the hand holding might get me acting up…

The spacesuit loli reminds me of Yashiro from Denpa Onna who was also a spacesuit loli, but I guess only time will tell if this spacesuit loli has esper powers. I’m starting to think she might too.

Lovely animation in this show too. Fits the story well and the character designs are great too. I think this will be a show where people get too annoyed with a slower premise and will drop it because of that, but those who stick with it will be rewarded for their efforts. But who knows, I’m just an anime only guy so I’m in the same boat.

    Looking forward to next time!

The trailer indicated it would be a slow romance.

Oh yes. As great as many of the “life threatening” love stories are I’ll gladly take a grounded one when given the choice of which to watch first. But yes do expect things to get steamy over time.

Would be awesome if she did have powers.

You know I slow down for no one. Whoever choose to drop this one it’s their call. I’m not begging anyone to “stick around” or “give it another episode”. Not my style.

I will postpone my opinion on this one until next episode since I fell like nothing much happened both in the Yuri from and on the plot front and it’s not enough to make a fair assessment of the show. Next episode looks like things will pick up though.
