Didn’t know what to expect from this one but despite the skepticism against the director supposedly not being pro yuri I decided to give this show a chance. I’ll follow the “3 episode rule” and see what happens.
We were dropped into a a dogfight between army doods and alien invaders led by a skeleton dragon. Despite their best efforts it ended horribly for our brave pilots.
Back at the conference chamber the world leaders were close to losing all hope when suddenly a strange boy appeared. He promised them salvation thanks his “Daughter”, a Valkyrie. How much you wanna bet he’s somehow in league with the aliens?
We moved forward 5 years later as the Valkyrie led an attack against a Pillar. Think of them as alien nests.
Compared to ally pilots in their advanced jets Valkyries take flight in powered up old school planes. After a hard battle the Valkyrie was victorious (Destroyed Pillars release Yggdrasil like trees. Probably a “Nature vs Technology” metaphor). However, she’s the sole survivor of the attack. We would soon learn this wasn’t the first time. To make matters worse a fellow Japanese Valkyrie was shot down in another battle.
Our main Valkyrie, Claudia, was transferred to a Japanese unit as a result. She was afraid that her reputation as the “Grim Reaper” would put other allies at risk were they to join her in battle. Still she accepted her assignment. On her way to the new base her transport was attacked by alien jellyfish.
Fortunately the Japanese Valkyrie arrived to assist them. Claudia couldn’t sit idly and assisted them. Despite teaming with a trio of goofballs the four did well.
Having arrived at her new base she was given a tour by the genki of the group, Miyako Muguruma. Her boundless energy and optimism brought joy to all, especially one.
Claudia Brufort is our leading lady. She reminds me of Enterprise from the Azur Lane anime, very nice and dependable but scarred by war and afraid of opening up to others because of it.
Sonoka Watarai. The cute one but also the wildest fighter. She’s the youngest, the glue that keeps the trio together and is the most “packed”.
Lastly we have the leader, Azuzu Komagome. Super genius and resident tsundere with a very nice body. All four girls have sweet bods but hers is the most noticeable. She is in love with Miyako and does a poor job of hiding it. I don’t know if Miyako is aware (everyone else knows) or is oblivious. Most likely the latter.
Like I said Sonoka is the glue.
There are many other sexy ladies among the cast. So far the guys serve the same roles as those in the Kotobuki anime, side-characters who help our heroines in battle and other supporting roles. Hope it stays that way.
The squids came back with reinforcements and this time our heroines’ strategy from earlier didn’t work. NEW PLAN.
Lure the water Pillar to the surface and go for broke. in yet another fierce battle our heroines were victorious but Claudia felt an ominous sense of deja vu. Fearing her “Grim Reaper” curse took the lives of more teammates who openly accepted her despite her reputation she’s close to losing all hope.
Of course this was episode 1 so it was too early to kill off 99% of the important cast. Claudia finally smiled a genuine smile as she happily joined her new family.
Pretty good start I’d say. Hopefully the show can keep it up.
