Warlords of Sigrdrifa Episode 1: Meet The Valkyries

Didn’t know what to expect from this one but despite the skepticism against the director supposedly not being pro yuri I decided to give this show a chance. I’ll follow the “3 episode rule” and see what happens.

Skeleton Dragon

We were dropped into a a dogfight between army doods and alien invaders led by a skeleton dragon. Despite their best efforts it ended horribly for our brave pilots.

Strange Boy

Back at the conference chamber the world leaders were close to losing all hope when suddenly a strange boy appeared. He promised them salvation thanks his “Daughter”, a Valkyrie. How much you wanna bet he’s somehow in league with the aliens?

Valkyrie

We moved forward 5 years later as the Valkyrie led an attack against a Pillar. Think of them as alien nests.

Pillar Readies Counterattack

Valkyrie Counterattack

Yggdrasil Tree

Compared to ally pilots in their advanced jets Valkyries take flight in powered up old school planes. After a hard battle the Valkyrie was victorious (Destroyed Pillars release Yggdrasil like trees. Probably a “Nature vs Technology” metaphor). However, she’s the sole survivor of the attack. We would soon learn this wasn’t the first time. To make matters worse a fellow Japanese Valkyrie was shot down in another battle.

Claudia Salute

Our main Valkyrie, Claudia, was transferred to a Japanese unit as a result. She was afraid that her reputation as the “Grim Reaper” would put other allies at risk were they to join her in battle. Still she accepted her assignment. On her way to the new base her transport was attacked by alien jellyfish.

Team Japan

Fortunately the Japanese Valkyrie arrived to assist them. Claudia couldn’t sit idly and assisted them. Despite teaming with a trio of goofballs the four did well.

Miyako Muguruma

Having arrived at her new base she was given a tour by the genki of the group, Miyako Muguruma. Her boundless energy and optimism brought joy to all, especially one.

Claudia Brufort

Claudia Brufort is our leading lady. She reminds me of Enterprise from the Azur Lane anime, very nice and dependable but scarred by war and afraid of opening up to others because of it.

Sonoka Watarai

Sonoka Watarai. The cute one but also the wildest fighter. She’s the youngest, the glue that keeps the trio together and is the most “packed”.

Azuzu KomagomeAzuzu's ass

Lastly we have the leader, Azuzu Komagome. Super genius and resident tsundere with a very nice body. All four girls have sweet bods but hers is the most noticeable. She is in love with Miyako and does a poor job of hiding it. I don’t know if Miyako is aware (everyone else knows) or is oblivious. Most likely the latter.

Azuzu's weakness

Like I said Sonoka is the glue.

Surveillance GirlsClaudia's superior and European comrades

There are many other sexy ladies among the cast. So far the guys serve the same roles as those in the Kotobuki anime, side-characters who help our heroines in battle and other supporting roles. Hope it stays that way.

More squid monsters

The squids came back with reinforcements and this time our heroines’ strategy from earlier didn’t work. NEW PLAN.

Water Pillar

Lure the water Pillar to the surface and go for broke. in yet another fierce battle our heroines were victorious but Claudia felt an ominous sense of deja vu. Fearing her “Grim Reaper” curse took the lives of more teammates who openly accepted her despite her reputation she’s close to losing all hope.

Claudia's new family

Of course this was episode 1 so it was too early to kill off 99% of the important cast. Claudia finally smiled a genuine smile as she happily joined her new family.

Pretty good start I’d say. Hopefully the show can keep it up.

Really fun episode! Had no idea it was going to be a double length episode, but didn’t feel any of the drag I often feel with those. Pretty excited to see where things go~

Because of some alleged rumor that the Rezero writer is anti yuri? Or that a director that has like 5 projects to their name (I think it was basically just 2, but with different seasons) is being called “anti yuri”? This is based off a light novel series, not an anime original.

Anime girls are the best pilot. I didn’t realize it was 45 minutes show until 15 minutes later. The fight scenes were good. I’m glad there barely any POV scene like in Kotobuki. I have weak eyes, it makes me dizzy. Claudia is gorgeous. Out of the trio, I like Pink more. She seems like a fun character. Azu is indeed has a crush on Miyako. She’s practically bright red when Miyako around. I’m fine with all the guys. They are all supporting characters and old. This is my least hype of all Fall anime but I’ll definitely finish it. It was a good premiere.

It’s for the best the show sticks to far distance views and the enemies are monsters instead of enemy pilots, for now.

I do not have a favorite yet but so far Azusu has my attention in regards to sex appeal. That and her crush on Miyako give me hope.

      So far, so good.

I love this one! At first I it was so ominous and dark that I thought it’s one of those stories where everyone dies one by one, but then it became really heartwarming… so now I’m even more worried that it’s going to end up having everyone die. Auugh ^^

All the girls are wonderful, and I really like the guys too. Azuzu is my favourite, such fun to watch, especially her failed self-introduction and the profuse blush when she hears her loved one talking about her from across the hangar and Miko points out that she wasn’t even talking in a loud voice. Oh how I love this kind of blazing, confused yuri love. Plus she has red eyes. I don’t know why I like that so much all of a sudden ^^

Miko is a perfect little idiot too. Something that didn’t come through in the translation was when Claudia says that to defeat a Pillar, you need to sever its Vandrande with the ground, and Miko twists that into “Bando yarou ze” (“Let’s start a band, yo”). I got a flashback from two of my favourite moments in anime history when Akiha misinterprets Leopard’s fancy animal names in Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo ^^ You cutie Miko, I hope with all my heart that Azuzu gets to have you.

Sonoka’s voice is adorable, and so is the lavender-haired petite cutie’s in the air control. I could imagine her becoming one of my favourites too.

  4. This was like, an almost 50 minute premiere ep. I didn’t notice because of how much fun I had with it.
The dogfight scenes were really good, and so far I like the characters here – the more battle-weary Claudia, contrasting the laid-back Japanese pilots and base staff.

The base commander’s VA is Rackam from Granblue Fantasy and I can’t take him seriously because of it haha

Some shows have 50 minute premieres and conclusions.

      Cool air battles for sure.

I don’t know Rackam but the commander reminds me of the one from Kotobuki.

The story is kinda meh for me but really liking the characters. Doesn’t seem like we will get much yuri but I also dont foresee any het romance because of the age gap.

First ep was decent, I like A-1 Pictures and all but I’ll have to give this 3 eps as well before deciding. Out of the 3 girls fighting giant alien invaders shows I’m watching this season, I’d say this was my least favorite. Assault Lily was excellent and Strike Witches, well it’s got a long track record of being good. I’ll have to see how this goes, but first impressions for me weren’t super positive. But yeah, 3 eps for this.

I have no intention to watch this but then I saw you did a post on it so decided to check it out. I’m glad I did.
I didn’t realise it was a long episode until 15 minutes in. Admittedly the part before the other girls showed up was pretty boring but everything changed when the 3 other girls entered the scene. They are so brimming with life and are such a contrast from what was the show up to that point that it was so refreshing. I don’t really know why but I really like Azuzu. I just love her design, voice and personality.
At the beginning I wasn’t that into the idea of flying battles but I started to like it as the episode went on, Also even though the enemies are clearly CG they actually look pretty good.
The scene where Azuzu told everyone that Claudia was called Grim Reaper in Europe and everyone accepted her was really cute. It’s one of the reason why I like Azuzu so much.
