A couple of years ago what looked like a girls’ space fishing anime aired. Unfortunately it was more like a mediocre mobile game JRPG show. I have seen much better. Cut to 2020 when an actual anime about fishing girls was announced. Question is whether it was worth the wait. Let us find out as we take a look at Houkago Teibou Nisshi.
Alternate Title: Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater (English)
Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life
Number of Episodes: 12
Plot Summary: Hina is an indoor-oriented girl who likes crafts and moves to a seaside town to continue with her high school education. She meets upperclassman Yuuki as she walks along an embankment and joins the mysterious “Embankment Club.” Hina dislikes sea creatures, but she fishes with her fellow club members and eats their catches. She gradually starts to appreciate the appeal of the ocean.
Put simply the show is exactly what a reader would think when they hear “anime about a fishing girls club”, cute girls fishing. Simple as that. The girls go on fishing trips to piers, under bridges and other good fishing locations all the while educating viewers with tips and tricks on how to catch various kinds of fish. Like many anime that educate viewers it goes in great detail on how to hold the rod, which rod and bait to use, how to open up fishes and remove their innards and much more. The best anime that teach viewers along the way are ones one can go back to to refresh their memories in case they too want to take up the activity or sport. HTN is one of those shows.
From left to right we have Natsumi, Yuuki, Hina and Makoto. If the theme of the show is straightforward then it is up to the cast to carry it on their shoulders with their personalities, interactions and development. Let us go over them, shall we?
First up we have the lead girl Hina. She is really good at sewing and the skill comes in handy on several occasions. However, she is afraid of “creepy things”. For the most part the creepy stuff is what one would expect people afraid of them to be affected by. She also has a bit of an ego and competitive streak though it never strays into cocky territory so no harm done. Also has a habit of losing her soul, which is a blessing for viewers. You will know when you first see it and treasure every other time it happens.
Natsumi is Hina’s childhood friend though it took her a bit before she the latter remembered. She is very energetic and always up for fishing but she is not a genki, just spunky. One would think she is not very bright at first glance but looks can be deceiving with her.
Yuuki is the Backwater Club president. She is the opposite of Natsumi in which she is often out of energy and in no hurry to fish despite being really good at it and teaching newcomers. Fortunately she does fish with the others from time to time. She has a “Southern” accent and is a sly fox. Remember the latter.
Makoto is a gentle giant. She is very strong, the better fisherwoman of the two seniors, knows a lot about fishes and fishing to the point of going on long winded descriptions and has an incredible body. She wears “foggy” glasses so her eyes are never shown. She may go on long explanations about fish but generally she is soft spoken and rarely starts conversations.
Like most clubs in Girls Club anime there is a female supervisor. Here we have Miss Sayaka, a nurse who loves alcohol and gobbling most of the club’s catches when able. She also “swings that way” when drunk.
The girl who goes through the most development is Hina with her fears and fishing experience. As mentioned when the plot is simple the characters are expected to carry the show which is exactly what these cuties and hotties do. Pretty good stuff from all dem lassies.
The presentation is solid. Not much to praise or criticize. It gets the job done, which is all we need from a simple and fun show like this. The OP and ED are fun and catchy.
Aoi X Hinata are the teachers and Hina X Natsumi are the students. They share a similar relationship though Hina X Natsumi’s yuri development is simpler and less dramatic. Expect many cute moments between the two. As mentioned Miss Sayaka “swings that way” when drunk but it is a rare sight.
Overall Houkago Teibou Nisshi is exactly what I wanted from a Fishing Girls anime, cute girls fishing. Nothing more, nothing less. It is another nice Girls Club show to add to the collection of fans of the Slice of Life subgenre.
PS: For fellow “enlightened” people, be patient. You will be rewarded.
