425th G-View: Houkago Teibou Nisshi

A couple of years ago what looked like a girls’ space fishing anime aired. Unfortunately it was more like a mediocre mobile game JRPG show. I have seen much better. Cut to 2020 when an actual anime about fishing girls was announced. Question is whether it was worth the wait. Let us find out as we take a look at Houkago Teibou Nisshi.

Put simply the show is exactly what a reader would think when they hear “anime about a fishing girls club”, cute girls fishing. Simple as that. The girls go on fishing trips to piers, under bridges and other good fishing locations all the while educating viewers with tips and tricks on how to catch various kinds of fish. Like many anime that educate viewers it goes in great detail on how to hold the rod, which rod and bait to use, how to open up fishes and remove their innards and much more. The best anime that teach viewers along the way are ones one can go back to to refresh their memories in case they too want to take up the activity or sport. HTN is one of those shows.

Hina, Natsumi, Yuuki and Makoto going fishing

From left to right we have Natsumi, Yuuki, Hina and Makoto. If the theme of the show is straightforward then it is up to the cast to carry it on their shoulders with their personalities, interactions and development. Let us go over them, shall we?

First up we have the lead girl Hina. She is really good at sewing and the skill comes in handy on several occasions. However, she is afraid of “creepy things”. For the most part the creepy stuff is what one would expect people afraid of them to be affected by. She also has a bit of an ego and competitive streak though it never strays into cocky territory so no harm done. Also has a habit of losing her soul, which is a blessing for viewers. You will know when you first see it and treasure every other time it happens.

Natsumi is Hina’s childhood friend though it took her a bit before she the latter remembered. She is very energetic and always up for fishing but she is not a genki, just spunky. One would think she is not very bright at first glance but looks can be deceiving with her.

Yuuki is the Backwater Club president. She is the opposite of Natsumi in which she is often out of energy and in no hurry to fish despite being really good at it and teaching newcomers. Fortunately she does fish with the others from time to time. She has a “Southern” accent and is a sly fox. Remember the latter.

Makoto is a gentle giant. She is very strong, the better fisherwoman of the two seniors, knows a lot about fishes and fishing to the point of going on long winded descriptions and has an incredible body. She wears “foggy” glasses so her eyes are never shown. She may go on long explanations about fish but generally she is soft spoken and rarely starts conversations.

Like most clubs in Girls Club anime there is a female supervisor. Here we have Miss Sayaka, a nurse who loves alcohol and gobbling most of the club’s catches when able. She also “swings that way” when drunk.

The girl who goes through the most development is Hina with her fears and fishing experience. As mentioned when the plot is simple the characters are expected to carry the show which is exactly what these cuties and hotties do. Pretty good stuff from all dem lassies.

The presentation is solid. Not much to praise or criticize. It gets the job done, which is all we need from a simple and fun show like this. The OP and ED are fun and catchy.

Aoi X Hinata

Natsumi greeting Hina

Aoi X Hinata are the teachers and Hina X Natsumi are the students. They share a similar relationship though Hina X Natsumi’s yuri development is simpler and less dramatic. Expect many cute moments between the two. As mentioned Miss Sayaka “swings that way” when drunk but it is a rare sight.

Overall Houkago Teibou Nisshi is exactly what I wanted from a Fishing Girls anime, cute girls fishing. Nothing more, nothing less. It is another nice Girls Club show to add to the collection of fans of the Slice of Life subgenre.

PS: For fellow “enlightened” people, be patient. You will be rewarded.

Hina X Natsumi forever, they’re destined to marry ^^

    spoilers for last episode
The last episode was so full of romantic Hina X Natsumi moments that it’s clear the anime producers knew what is the most important part of the show. Very lovely. And they even had a tiny but wonderful swimsuit segment in the ending.

What a great catch this show was although I’m still disappointed that they left out some hints between Oono and Yuuki in the manga, especially when Oono addressed Yuuki as “my dear president”. Oh well, at least I can dream.

Natsumi is still the cutest creature in the show with Oono coming in second, her horsetail alone is enough to cripple hearts of many.

Still, nothing beats Fox Yuuki, who needs cute fox girls when you have them ears and them tails. Also Yuuki is definitely Best Girl, I just love the mix of boredom and smugness in her accent.

Like with most school girl slice of life shows, this show is very enjoyable. I enjoyed all the Hina and Natsumi moments, especially the moments where she torments Hina. Still, the fox ears Yuuki is quite funny and amazing. Also, can’t forget the beach scene at the end of the last episode

It was a really fun and relaxing show~ I saw someone call it the “fishing yuru camp”, and I think it’s decently close (though Nadeshiko is way more aggressive than Hina/Natsumi XD)
A fantastic watch from start to finish! One of the best shows this season really! Maybe the best? If I don’t include Prichan, it would be my #1.

I truly adored this show! So Cute and calming!

    All 5 girls were great!

The Hina/Natsumi are too Cute and Heart Warming! They are too precious for words and need to be protected!

Best Girl for me is definitely (and to the surprise of no one) Is the fox Goddess Yuuki! Everything about her, I absolutely love! Her sneaky wits, her drop dead sexiness! (One only has to look at the last episode to see why.) And most importantly Her beautiful voice! I could listen to her talk forever!

Fun fact about me is that I actually hate fish. I used to have nightmares about fish all the time as a kid.Only the power of Yuri would make me love a fishing anime.

I would love more seasons, just so I can hear Yuuki talk each week. That’s what I’ll miss the most from this show.

This was a very comfy, relaxing watch and it made prepping and eating fish so appealing, even though I don’t really like fish due to how fine their bones are (I still eat it, though).

Hina’s glazed eyes were always a welcome, hilarious sight to behold and I really liked Yuuki’s accent. It worked well with her sly nature.

Some thoughts on the final episode:
It was Hina’s mom’s turn to embarrass her. It’s only fair.
Hina and Natsumi exchanging plushies was so cute and yurific in a very subtle way.
Hey, they managed to get a beach scene not about fishing…even if it was just in their minds.

My family love fish. As do I. The bones of course are something fish eaters deal with every time. Tis inevitable but so worth it in the end.

Her “Lost faith in humanity” gaze was one of the best parts of the show.

      Yuuki’s best senpai.

NatsuHina are set at this point.

      Third time’s the charm.

Ah Fishing Club, you will be missed greatly!

As far as cute girls doing cute things shows go, Fishing Club proved to be another excellent addition to that large catalogue of shows and not only was it fun and enjoyable to watch, but it was informative too, which is a nice bonus too. A few other shows have been like this in recent times and honestly I really like it because I’m actually learning something practical while enjoying anime. And it never feels like they’re beating you over the head with information for 24 minutes straight, they spread it out throughout the whole ep. Really like this aspect of the show.

Characters were all great and enjoyable. I think Hina or Makoto were my favorites. Hina felt very relatable to as she was new to the whole fishing thing and was grossed about the bait and such, throughout the course of the show, you could really see her progression and by the end she’s almost taking the lead for the day.

Audio and visuals were good and on par with what to expect from a show like this. You can really tell they put some time and effort into animating the fishing gear and the fish themselves, as they played such a key role to the show.

All in all Fishing Club brought a lot to the table, in more ways than one, and it’s a show I can look back on, and even rewatch if I ever decide to take up fishing myself.

Exactly what we wanted from the other show.

Hina’s development was pretty cool. Nice seeing her slowly grow accustomed to fishing and become slightly less fearful of yucky stuff.

Loved the older girls and NatsuHina’s development was of course quite welcome.

  9. I wasn’t interested in fishing before this show, but man the girls just made it look so fun haha

Overall its a feel good slice of life show, its great seeing Hina’s growth as a member of the breakwater club.

As an aside if you watched this via Muse asia youtube, scroll down teh comments where this guy who shares his own experiences fishing, relating it to the episode’s “fish of the day”. Really interesting!
