Ever since watching Taishou Yakyuu Musume I have been looking for another all-female baseball anime that can make my heart race. Princess Nine got a sweet hit but was not quite the homer I was looking for (Still a really good baseball anime). Cinderella Nine had potential but it only managed first base. Next at bat was the show we will be talking about in this G-View. Is this the one that got the homer or did it strike out? Let us find out as we take a look at Tamayomi.
Theme: Baseball, Legs, Thighs, Yuri
Number of Episodes: 12
Plot Summary: Yomi Takeda was the pitcher of her school’s team in Junior High, but due to miscommunications they did not get far in a professional league. Yomi quit baseball and enrolled at Shin Koshigaya High School. To her surprise she reunited with her childhood friend Tamaki “Tama” Yamazaki. Together they reignite their passion for baseball and begin their campaign to form a new team to go pro.
Before we get to the show itself there is one obstacle viewers MUST cope with before deciding to check this show out. The animation is not great. What I mean is a lot of movement on the field is in CG from running toward a ball, catching fly balls, sliding etc. Think of the CGI in shows like Kemono Friends Season 1 and The Magnificent Kotobuki. It reminded me of the CGI there, meaning viewers who were okay with the CG there should not have much difficulty watching them. Naturally the internet has a stigma against Japanese CGI so viewers who already cannot stand it will find little to change their minds here, especially after the (for some reason) prematurely rushed first airing of a certain episode. It was replaced later but the rushed tape left a very bitter taste for many.
Personally the girls all look great and the most important part, the thighs and booties are all nice to look at. Plus I can only imagine how much better and more detailed the muscles will be in Blu-Ray. They already looked glorious during the TV broadcast. Not quite the level of other shows but good enough to worship. Point being, the animation gets my (Will surely look better in the Blu-Ray) pass. The soundtrack gets the job done. Nothing noteworthy but the OP and ED are wonderful, especially the ED with its old school anime vibe.
Now for the show. To be honest there is not much to go over in great detail because the show is pretty straightforward. While this sounds like a negative it is far from it. It means the show stays on course without straying far from the message it wants to send. It is a show about gay baseball thighs, aka a definitely gay baseball team training hard and playing hard while facing personal struggles on and off the field. That simple. The girls deal with struggles such as a poor past experience, lacking confidence, difficulty communicating with others, underestimation etc. Basic sports anime character arcs. Again, this is its greatest strength. It maintains an enjoyable balance. All 11 Shin Koshigaya team members are easy to like with their fun quirks and sexy figures (Not counting ones who prefer their ladies petite because there ain’t any smol guns here chief). Each player, coach and supervisor get their time to shine and struggles to try and overcome by their own will and with the power of teamwork and love.
The other thing the show gets right, like any other sports show, is it makes the sport exciting to watch for fans of it and ones who are not. I grew up in a baseball loving family so I had an easy time getting into the show and enjoying it quite a bit but others, like with Rifle is Beautiful, had some difficulty getting into it initially bust most of my peeps interested in the show warmed up to it. Speaking of RiB the ultimate secret to Tamayomi’s enjoyment is the lovable cast and how passionate they are about their sport. So much so invested viewers want to see root for them despite them being fictional characters. A well done sports anime/show/movie/ etc is one where even viewers not into the sport can enjoy watching the story. That and each game/match should be more exciting than the last, which this show succeeds in doing.
Like most Japanese all-female sports anime/manga/game Tamayomi has yuri goodness to relish. There are several couples besides Tama X Yomi though not all of them get a lot of time in the spotlight. Some are shown being all cuddly a couple of times but besides Tama and Yomi there is one other surprise couple that gets some very surprising buildup culminating in a blaze of glory. I noticed these two show signs but needed more time before deciding whether to embrace them or not take them seriously. Well…the waiting definitely paid off.
Overall Tamayomi was definitely the home run show I was looking for, especially because unlike TYM it focused entirely on girls playing baseball (As much as I love TYM the secondary plot, while logical for the time period, irked me)…so long as viewers can cope with the mostly passable animation and CGI. The cast are wonderful, both the main team and their opponents, the games get more exciting, the plot is straightforward in a very good way and the yuri is delightful. Again viewers who are okay with the animation and want to see sexy gay baseball thigh action will most likely enjoy this show.
Would love a continuation but based on the mainstream reception it is unlikely, which sucks but have seen happen all too many times. It is what it is.
