415th G-View: 22/7

Every so often an idol show comes along that features stuff I am familiar with but does it in a way that blows me away after most episodes. Winter 2020 had two such idol shows. The first was OshiBudo and the second we are about to go over right now as we take a look at 22/7.

22-7 reminiscing

Alternate Title: Nanabun no Nijyuuni (Japanese)

Genres: Drama, Music

Themes: Idols

Number of Episodes: 12 + 1 OVA

G-Rating: 9/10

Plot Summary: One day, Miu Takigawa suddenly receives a letter notifying her that she has been chosen as a member of a brand-new project. Half in disbelief, she heads over to the location stated on the letter. There, she finds seven other girls summoned there in the same fashion. The girls behold a giant, top-secret facility. They stand in bewilderment as they are told they are going to debut for a major record label as an idol group. A new kind of idol, never-before-seen, is about to be born here.

Miu with her bangs

Miu.

After the first episode I saw the show as “another idol drama” anime. I was right. I think some people misinterpreted my words back then as me saying the drama was related to the girls having a hard time being idols. No, I was referring to their personal hardships. The idol stuff was secondary. Sure they participated in activities and events longtime viewers of idol media would expect to see in idol shows (concerts, TV shows, photo shoots, interviews, charities etc.) but the drama had more to do with the girls’ off stage personal struggles prior to becoming idols. Did all the girls dream of becoming idols prior to getting the “black letter”? Some but not all. Singing and dancing in public was the last thing some saw themselves doing in the future.

Miyako unable to dispose of the invitiation

The black letter that would forever change the 8 girls’ lives.

So what about the personal drama? Without giving anything away let us just say they all went through A LOT of pain and anguish. Be it family, love or people around them treating them badly they are commended for enduring many hardships. Perhaps some viewers will see a few girls not having suffered as much as others but to me they all deserve praise for eventually overcoming most of it. Naturally what they went through had an effect on whether they could fulfill their jobs or not. Speaking of jobs…

Goda

The manager/producer. Goda/Gouda, or as I like to call him Gorilla Goda/Gouda.

This brings us to the 22/7 company and its staff. Goda/Gouda and most of the staff are awesome. It can be missed by viewers who do not pay close attention but it cannot be understated that the work he and his coworkers put into ensuring the girls’ success is as praiseworthy as the girls’ courage, strength and hearts. They are unsung heroes behind the scenes. From Goda himself to the props people and the girls’ dance instructor. Thumbs up to all of them…except the boss.

Yes. Let us talk about the boss of the entire project. Without giving anything away I will sum up the boss as a douchebag. I can easily see some defending the boss as ultimately helping the girls grow stronger and “their” story purpose. To that I say there were far too many coincidences and reliance on luck. TOO MANY THINGS went “according to plan”. Bull crap. The boss should be counting their lucky stars things went as they hoped. Symbolic purpose aside the boss sucks, period. The only reason “Nice Bird” from Zombie Land Saga is slightly better than the boss was because he had his entertaining moments. Both are jackasses.

22-7 Ayaka and Akane Bikini 2

A mot excellent beach episode, yes.

It is not all sad and serious though. The ladies have lots of fun when not focusing on overcoming their personal struggles. Like other idols girl teams it is like seeing a group of girls who share very little in common (at first) coming together and learning that aside from loved ones (The ones they have to be exact) they are like a second family to each other. Some of them even finding love with each other…

I mentioned the narrative. This is one of those anime that not only gives each girl their time in the spotlight, one character driven episode each, but their backstories are tied to their assignments and jobs. While going through their backstory viewers get to see how the jobs are tied to what they went through and how overcoming personal obstacles helps them become better at the assigned job and being an idol.

The presentation is straightforward. Not much to say about the animation. It is solid. What I can say is the girls all look wonderful. The smol ones are very cute, the big ones are drop dead gorgeous and the middle ones a balance of both. This being an idol show one would expect the songs to be pretty good. They are. In fact, similar to Akuma no Riddle each character episode has the girl in the spotlight sing a solo song during the ED. will definitely collect them as soon as they become available.

22-7 Cast

Left to right: Sakura, Jun, Miyako, Ayaka, Miu, Nicole, Akane and Reika.

Let us finally talk about the girls in the order they are standing. Although my descriptions of their personalities are brief they are huge hints.

Sakura is one I often described as the “Kotori” (for Love Live fans) of the group. She is cute, has a nice body and a sweet voice. Very supportive and usually the most reassuring of the group. She is usually close to or beside Miu. There is a very important reason for this.

Jun is the youngest member. She gave off a cowardly first impression but that was because gorillas initially scared her. She is the most energetic and optimistic. Has possibly the most noteworthy flashback in a show full of hard hitting ones.

Miyako is both the funny one and a the “cousin” of the group. She has a Southern accent and in her own way does what she can to lighten the mood. She has a lot of experience after all.

Ayaka is part of what I like to call the Atomic Trio. She is the most aware of her beauty and is often carefree or cool.

Miu is one of the best main idols in idol anime history. She is a shy to a fault, having great difficulty speaking up or standing up for herself. She lacks confidence…unless there is a specific trigger…While Nicole was the first to push a button Sakura was the first to truly help her grow stronger. When not in the spotlight she is very observant of her teammates. A nice extra is her having a deeper voice than most idol protagonists courtesy of her seiyu, Nagomi Saijo. Helps her stand out a lot.

Nicole is the grouch of the group (Eli and Kanan for Love Live! fans). She is the most gifted and devoted to the idol cause. For the longest time she is the only one to not question the boss’ orders. For some reason is especially strict toward Miu.

Akane is the second member of the Atomic Trio. She analyzes everything in a robotic tone. Can be mistaken for a sexy android. Is OG’s favorite member.

Reika is the third member of the Atomic Trio. She is the most responsible of the group. Tries to act mature but due to her tsundere-ness her true feelings are easy to figure out.

I already gave some hints so no need to go over the yuri.

Overall 22/7 is a fresh take on idol dramas seen in shows like The Idolm@ster franchise and Wake-Up Girls! It is also one of the best idol shows I have ever seen. The idol stuff is important but secondary compared to the girls’ personal struggles. They come from different backgrounds but share common ground. The main group and staff are all wonderful but the boss sucks. The presentation is simple but effective. The songs are excellent and the yuri fluffy. Recommended to open-minded idol fans who do not have specific wants or needs in their idol media. Even readers who found what I had to say interesting can give it a look.

PS: The show hints having supernatural elements at first but there is none, not really, although there is one noteworthy case of a miracle.

One of my all time favourite shows. It plays its mysteries, supernatural or not, just perfectly. I wonder if the ending means that there might be a continuation.

Nicole is my number one girl all season, and that is considering that the season was full of stunning shows and stunning girls. Her accent is just perfect, I love her dancing and singing, and I still can’t tell what’s in her heart… A mysterious beauty.

Miu stands out as one of the most unique main characters of all time, thanks in part to her voice and her wonderful mixture of shyness and fiery heroism. Gorgeous.

    I want to see more!

Hopefully there will be more beyond the upcoming OVA.

Meanness aside her lovely figure and mysterious true feelings are admittedly intriguing.

Miu is top tier idol protagonist.

  2. This has been a great show. I loved the characters and the music is lit.
I loved how the show gave spotlight to each idol and gave them good backstories.
I definitely wouldn’t say no to a second season if ever they want to do it!

So there is an OVA coming in the future, good to know.

Overall I liked 22/7, it was a different type of idol show but I liked that about it. Always nice to see another take on the idol genre every now and then. Now that you mentioned it, I hadn’t considered any supernatural elements to the show, I guess maybe a bit but nothing too much I’d say. Don’t want to spoil too much in the comments though in case someone hasn’t seen it yet or is only part way through.

Hard to pick a favorite because each girl had something to bring to the table. Obviously Reika gets a nod for being a redhead beauty, but all in all I’m not sure who to pick as a favorite for me. As for favorite ep though, for me it’s gotta be the Jun ep. So much emotion in that ep, even though you could see it coming a mile away, it still hit so hard and it left a lasting impression on me. Plus it had me crying my eyes out and it’s not every day that anime makes me do that.

So much I don’t want to comment on as it’s best going in without knowing a whole lot about it. I had a few minor issues with the story here and there, but overall it hit all the right points and made its mark as a different kind of idol show in a genre that’s heavily populated. Would love to see another season of 22/7 though, they hinted at that for sure, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see how it goes.

I assume you’ll be covering the OVA as well, right?

Because of “you know what” some suspected early on the show would be similar to Revue Starlight, hence my bringing up the supernatural thing.

Yes I will cover the OVA once it’s out. It’ll most likely be about the three new members hinted near the end. I think I saw a tweet mention them in early March.

I think it’s too early to rule out anything yet. At the very least, it’s very occult. A “secret society” keeps a watch over children until they’re teenageeers and then makes them idols. There is something really off about it. I really hope another season is in the works, because it’s left way too many glaring holes. And I don’t think a single episode 13 can resolve it all.
The “boss” is a jerk for sure. I have a lot of conflicting feelings about this one. The journey was certainly great, but the finale was very weak, I just know that technically that’s not the finale since there’s an episode 13, but yeah.

  6. Well, I don’t think there’s much I can say that you haven’t said. This was a great review and hit all the points I’d want to make. So, I’ll just reiterate a few key things. Miu is indeed the most interesting idol lead I’ve seen and is my undisputed best girl. I’m sure that she and Sakura are only a couple years away from lifetime commitment, but I wouldn’t count out Nicole as a potential childhood crush based on the last two episodes. I think she might feel that way towards Miu perhaps if nothing else, though it seems Miu still hasn’t realized they knew each other back then. I feel like I’d like that to be clarified if we get a S2. Still, Miu x Sakura all the way. Jun’s back story was also my favorite, though I thought they were all phenomenal. This truly was a unique and interesting idol drama and is definitely a contender for my anime of the year. It definitely takes AoS for me if nothing else. It makes me sad more people aren’t talking about it. I hope we are fortunate to get a S2, as so many questions still need to be answered and I need more Miu.

      Miu X Sakura = Destiny.

Should Nicole have a crush on Miu it could be interesting to see if she’d go for it or hold back if we’re to be blessed with a 2nd season.

Pity the show is obscure in the West. Eh. Japanese sales are usually more important anyway.

      More Miu would be glorious.

That’s how you do an ending! After both Oshibudo and Asteroid ending felt very flat to me this was refreshingly good. Sure it didn’t answer A LOT of questions but they didn’t have the time since they wanted to do an episode for each character. I think it’s the best we could have got within the time limit of one episode.

It was all pretty good but there are 3 moments that stand out to me: the concert at the end of episode 3, the whole of June’s episode and the “rebellion” in the final episode.

Miu is a really cool character and probably my favourite, I really like her voice.

The best part of the show is the music. The songs are really good both the ones in the shows and all the EDS. The acoustic version they use as background are on another level though. They add so much strength to the scene they are used in.

The scene at the end where they show all of them as children while Miu and Nicolle are holding hands was really cute. I’ll also take it as a small win for Miu x Nicolle.

I’m not sure about adding 3 more character to an already crowded cast but I guess we’ll see if this gets another season/ on the OVA.

This has been a unique narrative for the idol genre. I couldn’t get enough of it.

Did you happen to catch the 22/7 ONA’s? It premiered around March 24, 2018 and it’s called “Ano Hi no Kanojotachi.” I just found the eps online…did a google search. They’re like just over a minute per episode so it’s a brief look into a day in their lives. Since this happened to take place before the TV series, it seemed little different but episode 2, though extremely miniscule, happened to hint at a Ayaka/Jun pairing. You can even see some of them in their high school uniforms.

Like Love Live the videos are part of their own continuity. Do keep in mind before being called to the zoo none of the girls knew each other. Well, one remembered our protagonist at least. But yes the videos are indeed worth looking up for some interesting bonus content, yes.

So uhhhhmmm….I finally finished this series and what a shame it was that I didn’t pick it up in the Winter season because damn, it’s really freaking good. (Although I got spoiled a bit from reading G-Views but some moments really hit hard like Jun’s past, hearing the cry of Yuu’s mom is heart wrenching)

OshiBudo was good and all (and gay) but this, this completely changed my opinion on the Idol genre that not all of them are bad, especially Drama Idol. (though I still dislike modern day School Idols)

And I really like Miu, both her character and her voice.

and here comes my yuri rambling. I think Reika hooking up with Ayaka is the logical conclusion, both girls have very supportive parents and Ayaka seems to be the only to get under Reika’s skin (in a good way). Not to mention the economical relief for Reika’s father at home ᵃⁿᵈ ᵍʳᵉᵃᵗ “ˢᵒᵘʳᶜᵉ ᵒᶠ ᶦⁿˢᵖᶦʳᵃᵗᶦᵒⁿˢ” ᶠᵒʳ ᴬʸᵃᵏᵃ’ˢ ᵐᵃⁿᵍᵃ.

Also, Reika is so damn gorgeous and sexy. I rest my case.

        Miu x Sakura

        Jun x Miyako

        Ayaka x Reika

Also, Ayaka teases Reika very often – like Jun x Miyako each other.

I got into the series and the group (who all voice the characters + portray them in music videos and interviews) much later than most other people. I only found them during the summer of 2021, as that’s when I was first getting back into anime.

Being able to look back and see peoples’ hopes and thoughts on everything when the anime was still new feels weird, knowing the current state of the group. Here’s a bit of an update, for anyone who may care

First, quite a few of the seiyu left in 2021.
Chiharu (Reika), Mizuha (Miyako), Ruri (Jun), and Aina (Tsubomi), all graduated. Urara (Yuki) was dismissed instead of getting to graduate.
Due to the characters not being able to be properly portrayed since their seiyu were no longer in the group, the 5 of them officially graduated on December 26th, 2021.

Due to the group now only having 6 members, auditions were held again, and 8 new members were announced on February 27th, 2022. The characters for the 8 new members were announced on April 20th, 2022.

As much as I, and others, want a season 2, I doubt it will happen. It’s been about two and a half years, and there are no official announcements that I know of about a season 3. There have been some rumors about a season 3 coming in 2023, but since it’s close to the end of 2022, I don’t see that happening. Additionally, they would have to come up with some way to explain half the group suddenly being missing and replaced. They could probably just do a timeskip and say “These girls left, and the wall summoned these new girls”, but that feels wrong in a way.

However, I do have some hope for some sort of animation involving the group, as their new single got an animated music video (as opposed to the slideshows we’ve been getting lolol)

Anyway, Sakura and Miu are meant for each other, nobody can change my mind
