When it comes to Isekai/Other World genre I normally show little interest to most shows (ones with male leads) of its ilk…unless they are centered around a female protagonist (preferably a group of girls/women). Some I enjoyed a lot are pre Sword Art Online ones like Maze and the classic Magic Knight Rayearth (1st season. 2nd not so much). The most recent Isekai show I enjoyed was Gun Gale Online. Here we have another one that caught my eye. Let us find out if it is worth readers’ time as we take a look at “title in image”. Let us shorten it to “Abilities Average” for the review.
Alternate Title:
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Isekai, Otaku
Number of Episodes: 12
G-Rating: 8/10
Plot Summary: The main protagonist is a girl named Mile who died and was reincarnated in a run of the mill fantasy other world setting. Her main goal is to live an “average” life. Unfortunately what is considered “average” differs from person to person. Anyway the firs step to achieving this is to become a Hunter. She runs into three other girls who, by happenstance, join her to form a party and accept Quests, rise up the ranks in order to achieve their personal goals, all while strengthening their bonds.
From what I have heard from my good friend Rory (who is big fan of the light novels) the Abilities Average anime is not a page-by-page adaptation of the Light Novels it is based on. There are even anime exclusive episodes. This being a sort of episodic series with a main story eventually showing appearing the exclusives did not feel out of place or “filler-y” in my view. I, not having read the novels found no issue following the show. According to Rory plenty of inane stuff was left out (or briefly summarized in abridged form) but also some neat moments that could have added to certain scenes. Again it personally did not affect my viewing experience but for super fans of the novels it is worth keeping in mind.
Other than that, as a whole Abilities Average is an action-comedy with wacky shenanigans, isekai tropes, dramatic character arcs and plenty of anime references courtesy of Mile the anime otaku. While this meant the mandatory Dragon Ball reference in anime I was surprised how many more there besides the expected Super Saiyan hair and Kamehameha. Besides that she references old and new series from Doraemon and “Rose of Versailles” or ‘Onii-Sama e” to a “certain mega popular romantic animated movie”. Impressive range of titles. Other jokes will be hinted in the character descriptions.
Besides comedy our four heroines embark on several quests that involve protecting citizens, eliminating monsters or character specific quests, just like in a JRPG game, which this world is not surprisingly enough. The character arcs are handled well. They are given enough drama with a pinch of humor to lighten the mood. The serious moments are handled well and the humor is timed well enough to not get in the way of the seriousness…for the most part. There was one episode the jokes and reactions may feel off for some. Viewers who remember “that episode” will know what I am referring to.
The presentation is solid. Nothing noteworthy in neither the casual or action scenes. It does the job well enough. The animation and soundtrack are solid. Some may really enjoy the OP and ED. The character designs are pretty good.
Let us go over the main draw of the show, the leading ladies and their antics.
First up is Mile. Like most Isekai protagonists she is overpowered to a strong degree with very few capable of standing up to her. This for the majority of the show is something that bothers her due to it going against her “average life” goal. Again, “average” can mean different things to different people. Besides that she spends most of her time cherishing her friends, remind herself they do care about her, hid her uber powers and modern knowledge behind the “family secrets” excuse, otaku references up the wazoo and of course get herself into trouble thanks to her big mouth and ego.
Next is Reina. She is a powerful black mage tsundere and the hotheaded “sister” of the party. She has a crush on Mile.
Third is best girl Pauline. She is the “mother”. Very kind, caring and sexy. However, get on her bad side or misuse money and consider your life in grave danger.
Lastly is second best girl Mavis. She is an ojou-sama who dreams of becoming a great knight. Her character is acting chivalrous while being the most feminine of the four and a chick magnet at the same time. She is as beautiful as she is handsome. Of course she is the “father” and Pauline her soulmate.
Like the description length Mile has the biggest ongoing character arc while the others have their own struggles they are taken care of quickly. I mean in one or two episodes. Personally I liked this approach. Some drama does not need more than two episodes to resolve, otherwise you will get something like the overdrawn O-Tae drama in BanG Dream Season 2. These arcs were simple and to the point but still effective. Much appreciated.
The side-characters are solid with the ones who stood out most to me being the innkeeper’s daughter and the party’s first major foe, an anime original character. Her screen time was short and her presence divisive.
The yuri potential is in the above mentioned pairings and Mile’s harem powers and one more character I already mentioned.
Overall Abilities Average will not set the Isekai world on fire but what it does it does well. The main cast are wonderful, the references and jokes usually funny, the action and drama nice, the presentation solid and the yuri potential decent. The interested are welcome to give the show a go.
It appears that actual story plot just started at episode 12 😀

Either a potential sequel or the likeliest outcome, Light Novel lure.

Please can Mile “recruit” the Elf scholar into her harem as well, that’d a wholesome package. Although as potent as Mile’s current harem can be, I’d prefer Mavis and Pauline parting the group and starting a new life elsewhere in the future. Besides, Mile still has 3 more to cuddle with: an Elf (maybe, just maybe), a fire witch and a noble lady, you can’t have too much in this life young lady.
And please for all that is mighty, let Mavis marry Pauline one day.

That would make a lot of sense. Mavis/Pauline and Reina/Mile kind of mess up each other’s dating lives. Split them into two couples, and things will progress more easily.

The elf could be a recurring side-character.
I am certain they will wed in the near future. The writer better make it happen.

It was good anime. Fun to watch Mile and her harem every weeks. But I won’t get my hope up for the 2nd Season which is unfortunately unlikely…

Highly unlikely we get a 2nd season.

I very much enjoyed this series!
Mavis was definitely my best girl for this show! Her pretty tomboyish looks to her cuteness of her pure nature. Yeah she and Pauline are definitely gonna get married one day.
Mile and Reina are a really cute couple too. Tsunderes are my weakness.
The OP was adorable! Love that little dance they do.
Here’s hoping we get a season 2 one day.

Two delightful couples, yes.
The odds are small but we can hope.

A second season would be wonderful.
Mavis definitely needs to marry Pauline, and Reina should have her cute Mile. Although I still find the original Mile/Misato the sexiest by far ^^

OG Mile was sexy. Loved seeing her each time.

Now I’m sure I’ve missed something, because I haven’t picked up even a hint of subtext between Pauline and Mavis… Reina was obviously tsundere towards Mile all along (which was glorious), but for Pauline and Mavis… are my yuri goggles that out of focus?

Due to many reasons, the LN is not on my list of stuff I would recommend others/something I enjoyed. So, when an anime was announced for this, at first I was like “I’ll give it a chance, maybe it’ll turn out better? Maybe without the introspective that anime adaptations normally cut out of LNs, it can work?” But as time went on, and I gave the LN more chance, I had gotten to the point where I didn’t want to chance it. Yet, somehow, curiosity won me over, and I ended up going for the first episode. From that point, I slowly began to believe that maybe, just maybe, this was a kyo-ani level of adaptation, and I could fully enjoy this.
And as time went on, I was in absolute love with the show, and all worries about it were blasted out of the stratosphere~
I really had zero issues with the anime, but probably because a certain scene was even worse in the LN, so it was just a plus for me!
BUT
if 9999 or 10 year old strongest got this level of over ambitious adaptation, I am not sure how I would feel about it. It worked well for Abilities Average, but those two LNs are already near and dear to my heart, and the dark is just as important as the comedy (irt strongest, the dark is on a much higher scale than 9999, but 9999 definitely has its moments)
Plus, they’re already yuri. Just the protagonists are dense XD well, Ferris and Laura are both naive (they’re 1o and 9 years old respectively XD). While Mile is an adult by reincarnation, and 12 even by not.So her thoughts on love/etc are obviously way different.
EITHER WAY
I super enjoyed it, and would recommend it to others looking for fun 😉

Oh, and Reina’s best girl, and nothing you say can change that 😛

I’d also choose Reina over anyone else in this world… But if Misato is an option, then her ^^

Ah, it’s already here. I enjoyed the show very much. Some episodes are more than the other. I like the animation. There are some funny faces and funny drawings, I can’t help but laugh. The humor? some I don’t get. But when it does it’s really funny. Light novels are really not my forte I can’t compare the anime with the light novel. Overall I liked it. The yuri part when you really looking at it, it has the potential to be good. It’s more of two couples than a harem that I’ve always wanted. Which I don’t mind. Although, Mile’s old gang, that’s her harem. Season 2 always welcome.

Twas an enjoyable viewing overall, yes. We got two lovely future couples and a yuri harem on the side. Very nice.
Unlikely but we can still hope for an S2.

I had a wonderful time watching this. I found the action sequences to be quite dynamic, probably aided by how everyone was so into their roles, if you know what I mean. Plenty of laughs to be had also and I got some of the references.
Mile’s a fine isekai protag who just wants to live a normal isekai life but I’m pretty sure she’s not gonna get her wish until after she figures out why them dragons are looking for the lost civilization. Her previous self, Misato, was cutie though and she had such a nice family. Despite Mile’s awesomeness, Pauline’s best girl.
Mile’s harem potential is obvious but Reina has eyes for her, even if she doesn’t show it.
Lastly, in the last episode, when Reina and pals surprised Mile when she tried leaving them behind, I found it funny when it was implied that Reina and Pauline were going to leave Mavis behind since she really was asleep. Poor Mavis, indeed.

Exactly. Pauline #1!
Yup. Reina loves her some Mile booty.
Poor Mavis. So cool yet so pure and innocent. 2nd best girl for good reason.

Just when I fell in love with the entirety of the anime, it has come to an end! I am sad!
I have a hard time liking Isekai anime due to my disappointment from previous recommendations, so I have to say I am very glad I gave this a try. It was easy to get into, and the execution of reference jokes were actually fun to see.
I enjoyed how Miles kept bringing up things from her previous world into her new world, I can’t recall if I have seen similar Isekai characters like her, I would love to see more.
