391st + 392nd G-view: Survivor Girls + Dumbbell Girls

Both of the following shows are similar in concept thus the reason I am reviewing them at the same time. That being “sexy girls teaching viewers stuff while showing plenty of skin each episode”. “Ecchicational” if you will. Find out what I mean as we take a look at Sounan Desu ka? and Dumbbell nan Kilo Materu?

Sounan Desu Ka.jpg

Alternate Titles:

  • Are You Lost? and How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift? (EN)
  • Sounan desu ka? and Dumbbell Nan-Kilo Moteru? (JP)

Genres: Comedy, Educational/Ecchicational, Harem-ish (Survivor)

Themes: Survival, Exercise, Weight Training

Number of Episodes: 12 (Sounan Desu Ka? episodes are around 10 minutes or so)

G-Rating: 8/10 (Survivor), 9/10 (Dumbbell)

First of all let us go over what similarities both shows share.

  • Both are Girls Club shows, meaning shows centered around a female cast doing whatever they feel like doing.
  • Both have solid soundtracks with nice OPs and EDs. Dumbbell’s OP is one of my favorites of 2019.
  • Both teach viewers a lot about their respective fields. Anime are known to teach viewers stuff but there are the select few who educate more than others. These two shows are examples of such.
  • Both feature beautiful ladies showing off parts of or all their majestic figures at least once per episode. Note the shows are PG-13.
  • Both are colorful shows with nice animation, Dumbbell’s being better personally.
  • Both feature a male guide who is there to educate, not be a love interest/het harem protagonist. Survivor Girls has “Flashback Dad” and Dumbbell has “Machio”, both of whom are not interested in picking up chicks for reasons I will get to when we talk about the respective shows.

There may be other similarities but the ones mentioned are the most noticeable.

Asuka and Mutsu

Asuka and Mutsu.

Right. Time to talk about each show separately starting with Sounan Desu ka? The plot revolves around four girls who survived a plane crash and swam toward an island in the middle of nowhere. There three of the four girls, under the guidance of survival expert Homare, followed her advice as they scavenged for whatever they could find to survive until one day hopefully being rescued.

The three inexperienced beauties of course start off unwilling to get their hands dirty but as the situation becomes more dire and not wanting Homare to do everything by herself they pitch in helping as best as they can. The girls and viewers learn valuable survival tips such as what is or is not edible, how long people can survive without nourishment, how to scavenge for supplies, how to set traps, etc.

By the way, the show warns viewers that although these tips are helpful it is advised not to apply the teachings on a daily, specifically ones involving food and water.

Homare's Dad teaching her valuable survival tips.jpg

The male guide of the show. Homare’s dad seen in flashbacks. He is alive by the way.

Most of Homare’s tips and tricks come from what was taught to her by Big Papa here when she was younger. It is thanks to her spending most of her time traveling with him that she was raised without shame. Viewers will get what I mean watching the show.

Sounan Desu Ka Homare.jpg

Expect to be blessed by this sight on a frequent basis throughout the show.

As I said the show is “Ecchicational” meaning viewers will learn neat stuff and on multiple occasions bare witness to the lovely ladies in some or all their glory like Homare here.

Homare and her harem.jpg

Homare has to make a tough decision in this scene.

Alongside Homare we have her fellow survivors/harem.

Asuka is the brawn. She is initially unwilling but becomes more dependable helping everyone with her strength.

Mutsu is the quick learner. She is the quickest to adapt of the three, willing to do what must be done even in the harshest of circumstances.

Shion is the “weak link”. The reason I put weak link between brackets is because of Shion’s upbringing and her development throughout the show.

Homare X Shion

Shion, aka Homare’s #1.

Speaking of Shion she is arguably Homare’s #1 harem girl. Watch the show to find out why this is.

Overall Sounan Desu ka? is a fun, educational and sexy show that at times pushes the PG-13 rating as far as it can without entering R territory. Recommended to viewers who do not mind watching sexy girls show off their skin and can handle some difficult circumstances.

Before we continue discussing Dumbbell it is worth noting for certain viewers to not go into this show expecting much yuri. This show is for people who want to see sexy ladies exercising and some super manly macho men on the side. If this upsets you then stop reading. On the bright side this is not a het harem.

Hibiki lifting dumbbells.jpg

Believe it or not the question in the title is answered at some point.

Dumbbell is about a thicc cutie name Hibiki who loves eating. One day however, her friend Ayaka noticed she was getting pretty pudgy. Freaked out she tried losing weight on her own. When that did not work she found herself at Silverman Gym where with the help of her school’s bishoujo Akemi she entered the world of weight training and dedicated fitness.

Some readers initially misinterpreted this series as a bodybuilding sports anime where the goal was to become magnificent muscle istresses like Valmet from Jormungand and Tsubame from Uzamaid! when in actuality it is about girls working out, getting into shape and maintaining their figure. While one of the girls does want to become a magnificent muscle mistress this is more part of her character than a main plot point. In one episode some MMMs are featured but of the main quintet Ayaka’s the most muscular. The other side-beauties are all equally splendid when they get to show off their stuff. The show is an Ecchicational comedy where viewers get to relish gorgeous girls working out and learning some tips and tricks on how to better exercise at home or the gym. The key to getting into shape is a dedicated weekly regimen. Bigger is not always better for beginners. Some stuff at home like water bottles or books are as effective as small to medium dumbbells. What is important is having the right posture and breathing properly. Obviously eating properly is important too.

Dumbbell Ayaka Tease.jpg

Best girl Ayaka.

What I mentioned above are some of the many useful tips featured on the show to start begin the road to a better body. Various exercises at the gym and at home are discussed with either Mr Machio or one of the ladies explaining in full detail. During these explanations another of the beauties or on some occasions Mr Machio demonstrates how it is done ending with a steamy image at the end (Not Machio obviously because he is always showing off his inspirational physique).

Dumbbell Nice Bulk.jpg

The leads from left to right: Miss Satomi, Ayaka, Gina, Machio, Akemi, Hibiki.

Alongside the exercising each one of the characters have their moments to shine be it learning more about their personal lives or doing fun stuff together/individually such as Ayaka’s family business and Miss Satomi’s other activity besides teaching. While everyone has their own sense of humor I can confidently say this is one my favorite comedy anime of 2019 thanks to the ladies’ reactions, Akemi’s extreme muscle fetish (Makes my undying love of muscle babes look tame in comparison), Miss Satomi trying hard to maintain her adult image, Hibiki’s love of food and special secret, Ayaka’s straight person approach to everything that happens, Gina being Gina, the supreme manliness in display by Mr Machio and the other buff doods that appear, the cameos (My goodness the cameos), the occasional fourth wall breaking and…

Hibiki Shounen Animation.png

Hibiki in Shonen Vision.

…the “shonen vision” as I like to call it. There are times the characters change visual style to that parodying old-school shounen anime with a modern coat of paint. This is the kind of stuff that has me busting my gut. Other than that it is a Girls Club show at heart with the theme of exercising. Great stuff.

While there is little yuri (maybe one ship) on the show do not fret about people who talk about the girls liking guys. It is not taken seriously here. Every time our heroines are introduced to the Inspirational One they are initially smitten but when his true power is unleashed they are like “Ehhhhhhhhh a bit too much for me”. As mentioned Machio is more focused on achieving god tier manhood and guiding everyone in the world of fitness than anything else.

Overall Dumbbell nan Kilo Moteru? is one of my favorite anime of 2019. It is sexy, hilarious, features very helpful exercising tips and of course muscles galore (mostly macho men but the few muscle babes there are are spectacular). One step away from that all-girl bodybuilding anime of my dreams.

I had to drop Dumbbell the moment the self insert guy turned up (so like 5 minutes into the first episode)… No amount of quality content can ever overcome the cringe that is a self insert character (One of the reasons I despise male characters in anime, there is always one self insert amongst them)… Which is a shame because it looked good.

You have completely misinterpreted Machio’s role in the series. He is not in any way a self insert character in any way. He exists for two reasons only: to instruct the girls on weight-training techniques, and to squick people out in-universe with his insane over-the-top bodybuilding obsession. That’s all. Even the girls who initially find him attractive are quickly turned off by him.

I haven’t misinterpreted it at all, self-inserts are not always the centre of the harem style character that is far too common… It is to fill a fantasy of the viewer, be it the generic harem protag or an idealistic idea of what they’d like to be, in this case, a physically fit gym guru who has the instructional dependency of a bunch of beautiful young girls… The fact they gave him the personality of a retarded puppy to go along side it does not remove him from the role of self-insert. Simply because in reality, someone of that personality would not have been tolerated and indulged in those circumstances regardless of their usefulness… Hence a self insert.

Besides our heroines not that many people in-universe were freaked out by his obsession. Taken aback would be more accurate. You know like “Damn.” reactions Other than that you nailed his role.

As far as what happens in the manga version, don’t know, don’t care.

Not here to start an agreement but rather clear something up. Later in the manga the main girl says she is still attracted and even a crush on him. Just wanted to let you know that.

How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift? is also one of my favorite animes of 2019! I’m on episode 10 myself (fallowing the english dub.)

A Love the “cameos” of 2 of my favorite action stars. Hibiki and Ayaka loving action movies, man women after my own heart.

I liked all the main characters! Hibiki being the sexy dark skinned thicc girl with her love of food and the god of arm wrestling. Ayaka with her goddess physique! Every time those abs are shown brings me life! Gina being Gina. Love the Foreign girls. Miss Satomi with her dopey eyes. And her being a sexy cosplayer! Man I do love me some sexy anime teachers! And Mr. Machio was always entertaining.

The Shonen Vision had me Busting my gut every time! I think my favorite one was the one in episode 10. The that one was more Horror Vision. But thats what made it funnier! And Hibiki and Gina’s reaction to it was also fantastic!

Another thing I loved about this series was the narrator. And this is the english Dubbed narrator mind you.

And finally I really loved the OP and ED! So catchy and they get stuck in my head!

    A fun and hilarious show!

OH MY GOSH THAT CAMEO EPISODE! One of, if not the best.

Ayaka’s beauty is mesmerizing. Hibiki’s thiccness is wonderful to be sure. Two incredible dark skinned hotties. All the ladies on this show are sexy beasts.

Mr Machio is a real man’s man dood.

My favorite one came from the arm wrestling segment. So good. Episode 10 comes close. Never question someone’s fetish. I learned that the hard way.

Like Shamiko’s narrator this one was having a blast in JP. I’ll check out the EN dub too.

They’re full of sexiness and machismo. SO GOOD!

As I was watching the last 3 episodes of Sounan Desu Ka focusing on HomaShion, I couldn’t help but think that “damn, these eps were made specifically for OG!”
My only gripe with that show is that it’s too short, and now we’ve gotta wait for season 2. We need more of Homare’s Harem!

And the big question: does any of the girls in Dumbbell develop visible arm muscles by the end? After this much workout, one would think they should’ve…

Are you lost? has ecchi tag on manga and I am glad I watched it.

The yuri was – due to an all-girl anime – very good, funny and cute and I shipped Homare x Shion, because they were so cute together.

I will continue reading this and the Dumbbell manga, because both are very ecchi and funny.

Are you lost? was a funny survival anime and Dumbbell was the same with gym and good lessons for doing yourself. Ecchi was much, but it was the same amount as in the manga.

Shame about Are You Lost? being a short as I really liked it, but being only half an actual season I didnt get enough of it as we shouldve. Hopefully yuri shows dont get made into shorts as they are already limited in quantity and niche as they are, the last time we need is for them to start gutting their already low airtime as well.

My resistance to the dumbbell show has been slowly eroded so there is a chance I might somewhat hesistantly check it out sometime in the future.

The fact that all the girls are intially smitten with him and him being literally deranged is the only reason they kind of back off is still eye-roll worthy.

It also one-hundred percent reinforces my assertion that the writer has never once come into contact with a real human female.

Although the yuri was quite low in Dumbbell, I really liked how Akemi and Hibiki started realising in the final scene how precious they are to each other. Now start dating, you cuties ^^

Likewise Shion had such a look of love when she watched her savior Homare sleeping. Clearly willing to have such a great girlfriend (and clearly not minding, after the fact, that they had gone through the physical steps of some interesting lovemaking…)

The one thing I want to learn from the survival girls is how to keep my clothes so spotless clean ^^ Especially without any soap!

Agreed that the dumbell opening song was great. Girls: “Mite nasai!” Machio: “…sai? Sai? SAI! SAIDO CHESTOOO!”

Oof, the Dumbbell hate in the comments here.

I’ll save my closing comments for my post (which I still need to start working on….) but all in all both were great shows. I loved Dumbbell a lot more, but SNDK had some great moments too. I’ll leave it at that for now, the rest will be in my weekly post.

This is one of the bigger advantages of anime not based on manga, less ranting about what happens later on in the manga when it’s something they disapprove of rather than enjoying the anime.

As for others who dislike it, period, it is what it is.

Definitely dropping to check out your final thoughts on the Summer shows you covered as I think they all ended the week of this reply.

Having a guy in a mostly girl characters in anime doesn’t have to be treated like a harem show. Guys can be part of the show too. Machio is one of them. This show is for both men and women. The message in this anime is clear. To have a healthy and ripped body. Not manga, anime. For me, Dumbbell is a blessing for people who appreciate it. I’m gonna miss them a lot.

I like Dumbbell as much I like Sounan. I love Homare and Shion interactions so much. Shion is Homare #1 girl and no one can take that away from her. You described Mutsu and Asuka role perfectly. And of course, they have a nice body as well. I have a feeling we’ll get a sequel one day.

I never watched dumbbell, so I won’t say a word on that.
Sounan desuka was certainly something xD At times it was pretty heartfelt, but it was also a pretty heavy fetish show XD Not something you want others seeing you watch ._. I don’t think it’s difficult at all to peg Shion as the #1 for Homare. Another season might be fun. Show was sorely missing a loli type character…..that way they retained water when there was a much easier way just….x_X

A fun show, but not for the weak.

Loved Homare x Shion, but I don’t think it was a good idea to review these 2 shows together going by the replies, Sounan desu ka was so much gayer in the last episodes it probably should have stayed separated from Dumbbell.

I slowly got used to comments sections filled with several people disliking shows I love. Nothing new. I get what you meant but I don’t regret reviewing them together. So long as people don’t insult others for what they like it’s not so bad.

I watched these shows just for the education honest! Ayaka looks much better with her hair down, but the teacher is my favorite of the bunch. I wonder if people who ship Homare and Shion liked or disliked the final episode. They did get awfully close… although it was pretty gross lol.

Of the three teachers my favorite was the evil looking one.

      Ayaka is a treasure.

It’s nature’s “bleep” if you know what I mean. A fan of Bear Grylls said It’s similar to something he attempted in an episode but less difficult because Bear was on his own whereas these two were together. As Homare said “You wanna die? Then ya gotta do it”

      Shion is Homare’s #1.

wouldn’t it be nice if the survivor girls found some dumbbells amongst the beach debris? then they could all build up their “abs of steel” (or “buns of steel”) while not foraging for food, water, etc.

I just started watching Survival Girls, so I can’t really say anything on it yet, except that I’m liking it so far.

As for Dumbbell Girls, I’m with ya on it being the funniest this season and I liked both the OP and ED. It turned something mundane like muscle/weight training and turned it into a masterpiece. Heck, I found myself doing the exercises at the end of the show with them (whether my form was correct is neither here nor there). I really should keep up with some of those exercises, though (saying that would make Akemi very sad, I’m sure). All in all, nice ladies, fit bodies and an awesome instructor that defies all logic couldn’t have made working out any more enticing.
