GRANBELM Episode 10: Tragic Truth Bombs

No point hiding it any longer. The show was like “Yeah we’re done sugarcoating. This is a Moepocalypse show”.

The episode began with the shocking post-ED Mangetsu scene from last time.

Mangetsu the Doll.jpg

Mangetsu the Magical Doll.

Suishou took great delight dropping the tragic truth bomb about Mangetsu being a doll created by The Magiaconatus for Ernesta. More on that later.

Kuon getting the upper hand.jpg

Kuon getting the upper hand (or so it seemed),

Let’s wrap up Kuon vs Suishou first. It looked like Kuon figured out a strategy to take Suishou down and she gave it everything she had but alas the seductive witch had yet another trick up her sleeve and our determined avenger was robbed of her wish of avenging her beloved onee-chan, suffering the same fate as Anna.

Mangetsu in really bad shape.jpg

Mangetsu in really bad shape.

Back to Mangetsu. After Night 5 ended things went from bad to worse for the poor dear. Not only was she becoming what she feared most, a background character, but everyone other than the final two mages and Nene-Nee’s family could remember her. This was because all Mangetsu’s memories were false. Kibou never had a big sister for example.

Mangetsu at Nene's.jpg

Mangetsu at Nene-Nee’s.

Mangetsu, feeling lost and broken sought Nene-Nee for guidance. First up the reason she could compete in GRANBELM was because the Magiaconatus willed it. Second it was sadly confirmed that most of the past GRANBELM mages were erased, specifically ones who died in battle. The big mystery was what was the real point of GRANBELM? We would get that answer shortly.

We cut back to Ernesta wrapped in guilt over Mangetsu’s suffering. Suishou took this opportunity to play some nasty mind games with her.

Suishou's horrific mind games.jpg

Suishou’s horrific mind games.

Suishou spilled the beans to Ernesta. She was like “Wanna know why you don’t have parents? Why Anna was corrupted by roid rage towards you? Why your one true love turned out to be a “magic robot”? It was all part of a test by the Magiaconatus because it chose you to become the Uber Mage. Me? I’m here to show it’s full of cat dung by winning the whole thing”. She was going all this while cracking Ernesta’s little “foreshadowing symbolism” doll we repeatedly saw throughout the show.

Back to Mangetsu. The sisters recommended she talk things through with Ernesta before deciding what’s next. She wondered whether it would be best for her to be erased along with all other magic so Ernesta’s wish could come true. However, as we’ve repeatedly seen Mangetsu had the “Hollow Soul/Pinocchio” character arc in which a inorganic being wanted to be human. Mangetsu wanted to continue living like a human despite being a magic robot. Will she be “Tidus’d” or is there hope? We’ll find out in the coming two episodes.

Shisui.jpg

Suddenly a wild Shisui appeared.

Next time we’ll hear what Shisui has to say about her beloved erased imouto, what advice she has for Mangetsu and how our heroines will prepare for the (most likely) Final Night.

Good stuff once again. I am getting Final Fantasy X vibes from this story all of a sudden.

Incredibly scary. I’m sad to see Kuon go.

Poor Mangetsu and Shingetsu. There was always something so strange about their names being connected like that (full moon and new moon). I even wondered several times why Mangetsu was named the way she was, if her little sister is Kibou (hope) – such unrelated names.

This show just forces you to count days and hours until the next episode ^^ What remains to be seen is whether it all ends in despair, or in some kind of reconciliation and happiness. I’m a softie, so of course I want Mangetsu to be with her beloved Ernesta, and Kuon to be in her sister’s arms. Hoping so much for a happy end.

Basically, Mangetsu is gay for Ernesta because Ernesta want her to be… Wow… What a revelation! What an amazing episode!

Good God, someone please give Mangetsu a hug, she’s going through a lot right now (talking to you Ernesta). So essentially Mangetsu is created by Magiaconatus because it(?) favored Ernesta’s wish for a companion, not sure if that’s benevolent or malevolent.

And now a bigger conundrum is facing Ernesta, enacting her wish and Mangetsu will disappear or using it to re-write reality so that everyone will be back to normal.

Poor Kuon, she tried bitterly only for Suishou to be like “sike” and stabbed her through the abdomen, erasing her completely just when our little priestess is about to shine. And oh yeah, Shisui is gorgeous as hell, hope to see her encounter with her ex-g………archnemesis Suishou.

This show really is a hidden gem this season.

Hopefully she’ll get a big hug next episode.
It’s easier referring to the Magiaconatus as “it”.

Tensions rising as expected from a Moepocalypse show, yes.

Poor Kuon. Interested in what Shisui has to say next time. Yup. Many of the ladies are sexy.

I can´t believe that I predicted right again, because – and thats really true – I wrote the Pinocchio comparison on a certain anime site right after watching the episode there. I knew you would think the same thing.

Don´t worry. Power of love will save the day. Either we see and hear the confession in ep11 or 12 for the grande finale.

It seems that Mangetsu has reach the grief and despair of Madoka Magica and.I felt bad for Mangetsu. I guess my prediction that she is a creation of the Magiaconatus was right. It only took a few clues such as her immense powers that she is not an ordinary mage. Still, hopefully things will resolve itself and maybe Ernesta will use her new powers to make her in an actual human.

Still, what Suishou did is evil, probably several times worse than what Akuma Homura did with placing a curse on Kuon’s sister and now murder Kuon. It seems that she is the complete opposite of Madoka/Ultimate Madoka. I guess the powers of the master mage can compare to Ultimate Madoka herself since it can control all the magic. This makes me wonder if Ernesta will go ahead with her goal, even if this means that Mangetsu’s existence would go away.

For much sadness for Mangetsu this could be, it was actually the best twist of the year explained her feeling of emptiness and not just a silly thing of a a teaanger. reveling that the protagonist is not even the protagonist,

Rough ep for Mangetsu this week, man things aren’t going well for her.

Lots of bombs dropping in this ep as the truth is finally revealed. That scene with Suishou and Ernesta on the roof top got pretty crazy when Suishou started playing all those weird mind games with her. Wild stuff.

Kuon vs. Suishou was a good fight, although sad to see Kuon lose in the end. She went pretty hard there and I thought she had it, but of course Suishou would have one last trick.

We’re fully in the endgame now, excited to see how this will all wrap up in the final few eps!

I really don’t like this not exist thing. Poor Kuon. Damn you Magiaconatus or whatever you are. Ernesta will not give up on Mangetsu, she’ll fight for her. Mangetsu needs to know this. I hope Shisui still remember her little sister and fight Suishou to revenge. Oh man, Suishou is so scary. Let’s see how the show’s end. This is what I like about original anime. We don’t know what will happens and we’ll get the ending. Not manga bait.

  11. K says:

Well…that despair train ran roughshod over Mangetsu’s very being, to say the least. That ABSOLUTE DESPAIR nectar was very bitter, indeed.

I really thought Kuon had Suishou right where she wanted her but I should’ve known better and now she’s as dead as Anna…and several other participants, apparently. Sad.

So, Magiaconatus was all like “You want this magic? You can have it! All of it is gathered in one place. You’ll just have to prove yourself!” Turns out that message was ONLY for Ernesta and no one else. In other words, the Granbelm was just one huge farce because Magiaconatus had chosen a champion already. Of course, Suishou’s there to prove that it chose poorly. How wonderful…

You know, in a more straight-forward story, I think Ernesta would’ve been the overpowered one loved by the universal force of that world and Suishou the underdog trying to take her down with lots of grit and effort. Of course, with a blackheart like Suishou’s, she would’ve been the Hero Antagonist rather than the Protagonist.
