Yuri Talk: goo Ranking’s Best Heisei Era Yuri Anime Poll

What do you say we take a look at another yuri poll. Kim Morrissy posted on ANN the results of a goo Ranking Japan poll to to determine the best yuri anime that aired during the “Heisei Era” (January 8th, 1989 to April 30th, 2019). Basically it’s another “Greatest yuri anime in recent memory poll” like the one conducted by the Akiba Research Institute which we all discussed HERE. What makes the goo poll interesting is how different it is from the ARI one. This time it’s a Top 20 list instead of a 30+ one and the total votes cast were around 2222. How amusing.

I’m also reacting to this list because it gives me an excuse to share my thoughts on the anime included in this poll that weren’t in the ARI one. Oh, and because it bears repeating:

The following are MY OPINIONS. ME, YO, IK, MOI, AMI, EU, BOKU. Nowadays certain readers need to be reminded of this to avoid unnecessary complaining.

Madoka Magica Grasslands

1) Puella Magi Madoka Magica (231 votes)

2) Revolutionary Girl Utena (201 votes)

3) Maria Watches Over Us (133 votes)

4) Is the order a rabbit? (118 votes)

5) Yuruyuri – Happy Go Lily (73 votes)

6) Bloom Into You (72 votes)

7) Girls und Panzer (68 votes)

8) Kakegurui (64 votes)

9) Happy Sugar Life (63 votes)

10) A Certain Scientific Railgun (60 votes)

11) Love Lab (53 votes)

12) Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles (52 votes)

13) Sound! Euphonium (51 votes)

14) Sakura Trick (46 votes)

15) Aikatsu Friends! (44 votes)

16) Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya (42 votes)

17) Saki (41 votes)

18) Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (39 votes)

19) Kinmoza! Kiniro + Mosaic (38 votes)

20) Citrus (35 votes)

Like last time I’ll talk about each of the shows. However, I won’t go into great detail on some I already gave my thoughts on in the previous list unless necessary.

Citrus Cover

#20: Citrus: From the #1 in the ARI poll to coming in dead last here. Not much else to add that I haven’t last time. Nothing against Citrus fans. I just find it amusing.

hello-kiniro-mosaic

#19: Kiniro Mosaic. Like I said last timethere are many Girls Club shows worthy of being in a Top Yuri Anime list. KinMosa is funny enough part of what I like to call the “Triforce of Moe” or the “Manga Time Kirara Trifecta” alongside GohiUsa and Non Non Biyori. It’s my favorite of the 3 and is Top 10 worthy.

The Ayaya

The Ayaya needs more love damn it!

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Cover

#18: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. You’d think this show would be ranked higher. I certainly would have. Anyway this is (so far) the closest we’ve got to an anime starring a lesbian family in Miss Kobayashi, Tohru and their baby girl Kanna. Nanoha took until Season 3 for that to happen and technically Subaru and Teana were the main characters of StrikerS. Maybe the lameness of the Lucoa X Shouta the shota subplot (Cool characters individually. Their gags together suck) is what dragged the series down for Japanese voters. I dunno. Great series worthy of a any Top Yuri Anime list.

Saki Zenkoku-hen cover

#17: Saki. I’m pretty sure if the voters were made aware of the recent bombshell dropped by the mangaka, Ritz Kobayashi, that more than half of the SakiVerse population are lesbians, 10% are bisexual and scientists discovered a way for lesbian wives to give birth without sperm donations this series would have ranked higher…Or maybe not. Who knows?

Fate-Kalied Liner Prisma Illya Cover

#16: Fate/Kaleid liner Prisma Illya. First of all viewers need to put up with the “Assface Emiya is a chick magnet” bullcrap. Oh and of course naughty lesbian lolis. If viewers are okay with that then Illya X Miyu is wonderful and Kuro/Chloe’s hunger is deliciously kinky. Let’s also not forget the miracle that was Mimi’s subplot. Bless you Mimi, the ONLY STOOGE I like. Then there’s arguably the best season by far “3rei”. Good stuff. Not Top 10 worthy but Top 20, sure.

aikatsu friends.jpg

#15: Aikatsu Friends!: While I haven’t watched the previous two Aikatsu series I’ve been informed that “Friends” is the gayest entry yet. I agree it has it’s wonderful moments and the 2nd season looks to be ramping things up quite a bit in the yuri front. Even so I personally would have added either Doki Doki PreCure, Maho Tsukai PreCure or Hugtto! PreCure. For the time being I’m waiting for Friends to end before ultimately deciding if it’s Top 20 worthy or not.

Sakura Trick Main Cast

#14: Sakura Trick. I still stand by my words of ST being a Top 10 yuri show.

sound-euphonium-2-cover

#13: Hibike! Euphonium. Waiting for the end result of the 2nd movie. Otherwise I stand by what I said: If Mizore and Nozomi were the main characters instead of Kumiko and Reina then absolutely this belongs in a Top Yuri list. For now I’m not so sure.

ms-koizumi-loves-ramen-noodles

#12: Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san. This show being on a Top yuri list tells readers right away this is a Japanese voting poll. As a show it’s decent. Nothing amazing. As far as yuri goes I’m not gonna lie. I have a soft spot for Yuu and her yandere love for Koizumi-san. Misa initially being jealous of Koizumi-san taking away Yuu’s attention was kinda neat.

Love Lab Cover

BZZZT!

#11: Love Lab. As an anime it’s pretty good. As a yuri show though, no. This is the only show on this list I would give an “X” to. The Riko X Maki ship is cute but nowhere near enough to warrant this show being in a Top Yuri list.

Top 10

10th G-View: To Aru Kagaku no Railgun

#10: A Certain Scientific Railgun, aka the only series in the “Certain” franchise I care about. Kuroko is a “hit and miss” character. In all honesty I care about the other girls much more than Mikoto herself. She’s badass in combat but that’s all. This one being a Top 10? I leave that for readers to decide.

Happy Sugar Life

#9: Happy Sugar Life. I was admittedly enthralled with this show in 2018 though I enjoyed Magical Girl Site a bit more. It was interesting delving into the depraved minds and seeing all the twisted definitions of “what love was” depending on which psycho Satou confronted. Plus I enjoyed her developing romance with Shio. The ending, like it or not, made sense, or as a longtime fan said “was the likeliest outcome”. I imagine many would disagree with HSL being in the Top 10. I would rank it somewhere between 15 and 30 30 myself if I ever made a Top Yuri Anime list.

Kakegurui 2

# 8: Kakegurui: A tweet by my lovely friend Loli-Tsubasa sums up this show quite nicely.

“Kakegurui went from ‘Local Horny Women Enjoy Playing Deadly Games’ to ‘Local Horny Women Enjoy Playing Deadly Games and Having S*x in The Forest’.”

This show being in the Top 10 depends on whether the reader relishes the above description or not. Me? I think this show is delicious and worthy of a Top 10 spot.

Girls und Panzer unleashed

#7: Girls und Panzer. If the show were as gay as the above image then yes it belongs in the Top 10. However, shows like Strike Witches and Kantai Collection and even Kotobuki were gayer on screen than GaruPan. Having said that there’s plenty of shipping potential on the show, so yeah. Plus it kicks ass.

Bloom Into You Scan

#6: Bloom Into You. As I said before, Top 10 Yuri show no question.

Yuru Yuri Slumber Party

#5: Yuru Yuri. Once again it’s the most mainstream friendly yuri series currently in existence.

Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka

#4: Is the Order a Rabbit? The most popular of the “Manga Time Kirara Trifecta”. Why? This equation should explain it:

Maids + Bunnies + Mega Moe X Loli X Imouto Fetish X Tiddies : Yuri = Cash Cow.

Top 3

Maria-sama ga Miteru

#3: Maria-Sama ga Miteru. It’s a Yuri Classic for sure but Top 3? Maybe because of its cultural significance in the Yuri Nation? Whatever the case may be it deserves a spot in any Top Yuri Anime list. Top 3 I leave up to readers to decide.

Utena beach

#2: Revolutionary Girl Utena. I bet several people who saw the ARI poll were like “That’s more like it” when they saw this one. Another culturally significant series so I totally get why it’s ranked so high.

[Meguca]_Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_Part_III_-_Rebellion_[BD][h264-720p_AAC][06B21A44].mkv_snapshot_01.49.37_[2015.11.23_19.12.54]

#1: Meduka Meguca. People must REALLY love Homura’s legend. I get why people love it so much but I still don’t consider it a Top 10 yuri show, much less #1. Top 20, sure.

For some reason I consider the “goo” list more casual or mainstream than the “ARI” one. I was asked what my overall thoughts were on THIS list compared to the last one and “casual” and “mainstream” were the two words that popped in my head. That’s all I got.

Share your thoughts on this list and how it stacks up against the ARI one in the comments.

PS: I already mentioned these shows in the “ARI” poll but as a reminder here are some shows I would add to my own Top Yuri List (When I eventually make one).

  • Izetta: The Last Witch
  • Flip Flappers
  • Rinne no Lagrange
  • Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku
  • Symphogear
  • Harukana Receive
  • Yuki Yuna was Yuusha de Aru
  • Mouretsu Pirates
  • Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl

I liked Girls und Panzer a lot. I would have loved seeing a version like that image. Wow!

Aikatsu Friends! being on this list pleases me a lot. With the way the second season is going, I think it has the potential to be top ten worthy. We may only be six episodes in at this point, but it has just been that good.
Disappointed at the lack of any PreCure. Doki Doki, Maho Girls and Hugtto! would have all been fantastic choices.
Personally I would put Kiniro Mosaic, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid and Sakura Trick higher up the ranking – I think at least top ten for all of them.
I’d also include Symphogear and Harukana Receive in my personal ranking. If we’re including OVAs, Kase-san is a given, too.

I think Bloom into You is more deserving of the number one spot than Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but both are incredible experiences in their own ways.

Reason I didn’t include my own additions this time is because I already did last time. I’ll edit the post by including them again.

Yup. Those 3 are the gayest PreCures and worthy of making a Top Yuri list for sure.
Definitely need to catch up on Friends.

Definitely. The AIR list is better in that regard than this one in my opinion.

BiY is Top 10-5 without a doubt.

Taking out my triggering memories with Hibike I can respect that list. Something I would like to see is the new Tier Lists that everybody is making but with yuri anime or manga. Doesnt seem to have any of those.

When I discovered the rankings, it’s definitely interesting that Madoka is number one. From the anime alone, outside of Kyouko and Sayaka, Homura love for Madoka doesn’t become very obvious until the Rebellion movie, which I reviewed a few months back. Will Magica Record give some more yuri moments, especially with Iroha and Yachiyo? We have to wait and see.

Haven’t seen some of the shows on the list, but it’s nice to see Yagate Kimi ni Naru on the top 5, but still surprising to see Gochuumon that high. Yes, there is Sharo who has a blatant crush on Rize and there is Cocoa obsessing over Chino (also, Megu and Maya), but the yuri is tamer compared to other Manga Time Kirara series. Kiniro Mosaic has a bit more yuri with the obvious Shinobu and Alice (and sometimes Karen( and Youko and Aya. Even I can argue that Slow Start has plenty of Yuri, especially with Eiko trying to make a harem of her own. Yes, Sakura Trick is obvious, but I would like to see more yuri genre Manga Time Kirara adaptations like Swap Swap maybe.

Hibike is debatable over whether or not it’s yuribait since at one point Reina has a crush on the music teacher. Sure, there is Mizore and Nozomi pairing which is more believable, but they aren’t the main characters, although there is a movie centered around them.

Homura’s love for Madoka became obvious when we got her flashback, meaning long before Rebellion. For some it was before that even. Hopefully the Magia Record anime will deliver on the yuri front as well.

That’s a reason why I like KinMosa the most. It’s the gayest of the trifecta, but as you saw in my equation GochiUsa caters to more fetishes, hence its high placement.

Team KumiAsu BABEH! That’s the reason I wasn’t very upset when Reina went gung-ho over the teacher. Again I’m waiting to see what happens in the upcoming movie.
      Yup.

how Friends got in, but Pripara did not I’ll never know. Easily more yuri than Friends and you talk about “Lesbian moms and their daughter”, and you get the three best characters in the entirety of Pripara (though she was more an “adopted daughter”.) And that’s just the beginning. Show was so crazy yuri friendly…..

I guess people just didn’t put it up there because it seemed too kiddy for them? Looks were very deceiving though……

    Anyway
How Saki was so low….and the list in general was eh. Some good ones, but yeah, dunno how Love Lab got so high…I feel like if Yuri Danshi got animated someday, It’d be up on one of these lists for whatever reason (even though it was anti yuri….)

My Aromageddon/Garomageddon knowledge so far is based on word of mouth.

      No idea.

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit. If it did happen it’d be the answer to the question, “What anime/manga could be worse than Maria Holic?”

Agreed with you on Love Lab. Love the show, but yuri? Nah.

Happy to see Aikatsu Friends make the list even though I don’t think I would have voted for it.

I had the same thoughts on ‘Love Lab’. I saw this on ANN was a bit confused on some of the shows being at the rank their at, but ‘Love Lab’ shouldn’t be on a yuri list.

A lot of shows on here that I’ve seen and enjoyed, but also a lot I haven’t and am now interested in checking out at some point in the future.

Not too surprised that Madoka took the top spot. I mean sure it’s a good show and I really enjoyed it, but giving it the number 1 spot seems a bit much honestly. I have no idea what else I’d put in its place, but all I can say is that it’s not Madoka.

Do give the ones you’re interested in a go.

Meduka Meguca is a top tier show for many but of course nowhere near worthy of the #1 spot, especially when it comes to yuri.
