Hitoribocchi Episode 1: The Legend of Bocchi

Since it’s Wrestlemania weekend and I went to Shazam (Pretty good movie) my focus is less on anime but I wanted to at least try and talk about the premiere of one of the few shows I’m interested in this Spring 2019 season.

We are immediately introduced to our adorable protagonist Bocchi Hitori as she approached the front gate of her new middle school. However, she wasn’t looking forward to school at all. Not because she didn’t want to study but her great fear of socializing with other people.

Bocchi and Kai's promise.jpg

The promise that started it all.

The reason Bocchi was doing all this (Besides her duties as a growing girl) was to try and keep the promise she made to her childhood friend Kai who was like “If you want to marry me you have befriend everyone in your new class” Essentially it was her way of helping Bocchi leave her comfort and grow as a person.

Puffy Bocchi

Puffy Bocchi.

She REALLY didn’t want to go through with middle school to the point she wrote several strategies on how to complete her mission without socializing with anyone from abolishing middle schools across Japan to tricking her classmates that the class she attended was abolished. Most of them obviously failed. The last strategy was basically “Just go for it!”, which she wasn’t looking forward to but had no choice.

Suffice to say her introduction went horribly but even so Bocchi wanted to try and befriend the girl sitting in front of her, Nako. She got a leg cramp. Off to a good start. She even got a “Ric Flair Flop” in.

She eventually got up, ran off to buy juice for Nako. Unfortunately her words not coming out right and Nako’s scruffy attitude, combined with what happened during introductions didn’t leave her with a good first impression of Bocchi. The latter properly explained herself solemnly sitting down.

Nako felt bad for Bocchi so when it was raining outside she threw hints of the two sharing an umbrella on the way home. Bocchi remembered the “gofer” line, gave Nako hers and ran away. Nako gave chase with the two finally having a conversation, agreeing to be more talkative from now on.

Bocchi remembered the next step to making friends is having chats so she wrote down notes in hopes of successfully getting Nako’s phone number. As the above pic shows she came prepared…only to be surprised by an unexpected response.

Put simply Nako enjoyed teasing Bocchi because most of her reactions were amusing though she made sure not to take things too far. Eventually the two solidified their friendship and Bocchi’s legend had officially begun.

A delightful start. Looking forward to the other girls Bocchi will befriend.

Off to a great start. Will Bocchi marry Kai, or will she find new love?

I saw some people commenting that “no one is that shy” elsewhere, and I can confirm that Bocchi isn’t even the worst case of shyness.

I’d love to see more of Bocchi’s conversational flow charts.

Bocchi is mad cute with her constant struggle at making new friends and it seems that the finally found one. Mya-nee has some competition now.

I like how Nako is just more than half a head taller than Bocchi, maybe she’s tall by default or another speculation is that Nako must have repeated a year or so due to bad behavior (she obviously looks like a delinquent), either way makes for a good kabedon.

Now what we have left to wait is for the last two members of the Bocchi’s har………friend circle to join in, one of which being the foreigner gal.

    Wholesome Saturdays, here I come.

Also is it me or does Nako look staggeringly similar to Kai? I mean both their eye and hair colors are almost the same.

At first I was worried this anime wouldn’t be able to live up to the manga, but luckily there was nothing to worry about. This first episode has the same charm that the manga does.

Also, I have a bit of confession: I actually ship Bocchi with Nako more so than the other girls. Although, I do like her relationship with everyone else.

Super cute. I love that adorable way that Bocchi looks up to Nako in the end. She’s amazing for being so shy and being such a girl magnet at the same time.

I also like that they gave Nako such a soft girly voice.

Can’t wait to see my two favourite characters ^^

Off to a great start with this show. Granted I can’t remember much from the manga, but it was a great start.

I honestly didn’t think of Nako as having blonde hair. Then again it’s been ages since I read the manga so I can’t remember, but I guess the blonde hair does fit her personality.

Bocchi is so cute and must be protected. I hope she makes friends and fulfills her promise!

Didn’t pick up the manga, especially after the anime was announced. You know me. I prefer going into anime adaptations “blind”.

Nako’s cool in her own way.

      Bocchi is precious.

This was cute. This seem like the kind of really chill anime I like. Will definitively keep watching.

I have to admit that Bocchi is cute, although she is a lot shyer than Miyako. Still, I find it funny how she tries to declare her friendship with Nako like a love confession. Still, It’s too early to start shipping her with Nako.

Even so, I feel that Kai is not really Bocchi’s friend by her breaking relations off for a silly promise. Still, I look forward to how Bocchi’s friend making will play out.

  11. ArcaJ says:

Bocchi looks like Mya-nee and Osaka (Azumanga Daioh) somehow had a kid. (Crossover ship!)

She’s weird, and that’s part of her charm. Even though Nako looks like a delinquent she isn’t mean or anything. The fact that she considered Bocchi a friend (even after all the headbutts) shows her good nature.

Great start with a weirdly cute main character. The teacher seems jittery around Nako for some reason…
