Heart of the Woods Now Available

The wait is over doods and peeps! The highly anticipated first release by Studio Élan, Heart of the Woods is here! For people who are new to this title, one of the many reasons there was lots of hype around the game is because it is by many of the staff who worked on the highly regarded Highway Blossoms.

Heart of the Woods

Plot Summary: Heart of the Woods is a fantasy yuri visual novel about paranormal investigation, ancient mysteries, and a love between two girls that transcends life and death.

Maddie Raines has had enough. After years of serving as manager, editor, and general business-handler for her best friend Tara’s popular paranormal vlog channel, she’s finally ready to move forward with her own life. But when she agrees to take one last trip with Tara to the mysterious village of Eysenfeld, she’s suddenly swept up in a dangerous supernatural crisis that will change the course of both of their lives forever. A strange young woman named Morgan has promised them undeniable proof of real paranormal phenomena, and what she has to offer eclipses anything they’d ever seen before.

However, out of all the strange occurrences the three of them bear witness to, one in particular captivates Maddie in a way she’s never been before: the ghost of a young woman. This woman is Abigail, the victim of a centuries-old injustice now bound eternally to the forest surrounding Eysenfeld. Drawn to Maddie in a way she can’t explain, Abigail reveals herself to another person for the first time in more than 200 years.

While Tara and Morgan investigate the mysteries surrounding the village itself, Maddie begins to form a bond with Abigail that grows to be more intense than any bond she’s felt before. As she learns the truth about Abigail’s death and imprisonment, she realizes that it falls to her and her friends to break the curse that has ruled over Eysenfeld for centuries. But more importantly than that, it falls to her to finally free the woman she loves.

This game doesn’t have a sad ending, does it? It looks interesting, but I don’t want to do sad endings.

  2. Just finished it yesterday, and it seems I got the best / true end.

I expected a great deal from this VN for a long time, but in the end it even beat my expectations! Just wonderful, absolutely great work, art, music, writing, everything! Love it!

It’s right past 4AM where I live and I’ve just finished reading this one. And what I have to say is this: hot damn.

Heart of the Woods was certainly more than I expected, and well worth the asking price. It might not be Flowers in terms of visuals, but it does come pretty damn close at times. Writing-wise it’s among the best VNs I’ve ever read, and the music… it’s just gorgeous. Truly, a VN I didn’t know I needed in my library.

I am actually playing this through a second time. Not to aim for a different ending: I’m deliberately going for the same good ending I already got the first time (why would anyone be so cruel as to WANT to inflict a bad ending on these wonderful girls?). No, I’m playing it again because I find this so well done, the characters so compelling, the music and the artwork making the story so immersive, that I just want to experience it all again from beginning right through to the best ending.

I don’t usually do that: your average visual novel just doesn’t tend to speak to me enough to make me want to experience the whole story over again. But this one does.

I’m on chapter four and I’ve already cried twice.
