BanG Dream 2.1: Old and New Bands

Word of warning. People who are itching to complain about BanG Dream 2 being all CG can go somewhere else because I don’t care. I’ve wanted more BanG Dream for a while and I got it. I have better things to do than waste my time reading rants about CG. If it bothers some of you, don’t watch it. That simple.

pastel palettes

Pastel*Palettes

We kick off the new season with a performance by one of the other bands in the franchise, Pastel*Pallettes. I don’t know if we’ll get their backstory or info on them and the other bands as the show progresses or it’s expected for some viewers to have played “BanG Dream! Girls Band Party” to get the gist on everyone not in Poppin’ Party.

Kasumi, Arisa and Rinka.jpg

Kasumi, Arisa and Rinko.

After the prologue and OP we were reintroduced to mascot girl Kasumi and her (hopefully still) “Number One” Arisa. They moved up a grade and became 2nd years at Hanasakigawa Girls’ Academy. Beside them was someone readers who saw the 1st BanG Dream OVA may be familiar with. It’s Rinko from Roselia who was the seitokaichou while Arisa was the secretary. Another Roselia member came to check up on them, Sayo Hikawa.

Sayo.jpgHina.jpg

We moved on to Haneoka Girls’ Academy which Kasumi’s imouto Asuka, aka “Aa-chan” enlisted into. There the new students were introduced to their seitokaichou Hina Hikawa from Pastel*Pallettes. I need not state the obvious about these two girls and their different personalities.

Ako.jpg

The Goth Idol of the franchise, Ako. I know Roselia’s a Goth Rock band but Ako’s like the Ranko or Yohane of the franchise.

The next girl in the BanG Dream roll call was the third Roselia member Ako Udagawa, the goofy Goth Idol of the franchise (A personal favorite idol archetype).

Rokka Asahi.jpg

Rokka Asahi.

Next is the clumsy Rokka Asahi. Dunno who she is as I haven’t played Girls Band Party myself due to not having a strong enough tablet. (Update: Looks like she’s an anime original character.) We later learn she works at the new Live House the bands I assume will be performing at regularly, excluding special live shows, Galaxy.

Rimi and Saaya.jpg

Rimi and Saaya.

Next up were Rimi-rin and Saaya. Rimi’s onee-chan Yuri went to study abroad and poor Rimi felt lonely. Luckily Saaya helped cheer her up a bit. Plus she can always visit the bakery for some double sweets…if you all know what I mean.

Poppin' Party.jpg

Poppin’ Party.

Not much else to talk about as the episode was essentially a “Roll Call” and “Demo Reel” introducing longtime fans and newcomers to the other bands that’ll be joining Po-Pi-Pa in the coming 2 seasons.

Some observations from a newcomer:

-Afterglow and Roselia appear to be super rival bands. All the bands are of course friendly rivals but those two are very similar in styles so methinks they strive to outperform each other.

-Afterglow and Roselia’s drummers are sisters.

-HHW’s Kaoru is a chick magnet as she demonstrated on Rimi. However, she doesn’t appear to be very bright.

-HHW’s Michelle is a grouch under the pink bear suit. Update: It’s more like how Arisa puts up with Kasumi.

The episode ended with Po-Pi-Pa and Roselia announcing their own special live shows.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go finish the two Bandori chibi shorts and see what more I can learn about the bands in them. Again I have zero interest in people ranting about the CG.

You’ll notice from the shorts but yeah, Roselia and Afterglow (or more exactly their leaders) are usually trying to ‘outcool’ the other group, but it’s not a bitter kind of rivalry.

Also the girl in Michelle’s suit is actually nice but… well, with three birdbrains in her group she has to deal with a lot

Its not like Yukina and Ran are trying to outdo eachother. They just dont see eye to eye. And the girl you call Rinka, her name is actualy Rinko. Hina and Sayo are twins. The name of Saaya is actualy spelles Sayā.

Nice first episode. Sure, Pastel Palettes didn’t show up at the live house, hopefully Kasumi will see them someday. Still, I I agree that Ako does remind me of Ranko.

Still, it’s nice to see more Kasumi and Arisa goodness. Maybe Kasumi has something to do with dragging Arisa to be part of the student council?

Pastel Palettes already performed at the start of the episode so there was no need to see them sing again.

It wasn’t clear whether Kasumi also joined the seitokai but I’m sure she had a hand at getting Arisa to join.

Very entertaining 1st episode, good songs too. The CG looks beautiful. And it’s great to see PoPiPa again and especially Kasumi and Arisa. We’ll know more about the other band sooner or later, no need to play the game. Also I think Rokka is there to assist the band, not joining the band. And maybe with Acchan too. Rimirin is a big fan of Kaoru. That makes me like Rimirin even more. Ran and Yukina personality is similar, their interaction will be fun to watch. In the game Afterglow and Roselia are friendly rivals, but who knows maybe the writers have something different in mind. And yeah, HHW has three Kasumis, poor Misaki.

Yeah. I don’t think Rokka or Aa will join any band.

Rimi going gaga for Kaoru was wonderful.

Nah. I doubt they’ll take Roselia and Afterglow’s rivalry to the extreme.

Apparently, Rokka is part of Bandori’s latest female band, Raise A Suilen (RAS). Which was formed out of reserve drummers/guitarists for Afterglow and Hello Happy World in real life Live performances, because some of the seiyuus cannot play their instruments at the level required for Lives.

It won’t surprise me that Rokka in anime would reprise her seiyuu’s real-life role, by filling in as a temporary stand-in for band members who can’t make it (for any number of personal reasons, many of which seem to be foreshadowed in this episode), in order to ensure the show can go on.

THERE IS ONE MASSIVE HUGE FLAW WITH THIS SEASON!!!! …Yuri-rin went overseas, which means we likely won’t see her again. 😥 I am saddened by the loss of Mimorin.

RinAko definitely work best when they’re together. When Rinko gets over her shyness, maybe she’ll go full chuuni too.

MocaRan got a brief moment, and Rimi-rin and O-Tae were cuddling up together.

I haven’t seen Rokka in the part of the game I’ve played. It had Circle and… what’s her face from the Pico anime.

    • OG-Man says:

She’ll probably get a cameo responding to one of Rimi-rin’s messages.

I’m sure Ako will eventually help Rinko come out of her shell.

Looking forward to MocaRan. O-Tae wants a yuri harem.

Guess she isn’t from the game.

      • Mauron says:

        I sure hope so.

And Rinko will help Ako with her chuuni lines. The work well together.

I’m looking forward to more of all my ships from the game.

Kasumi and O-Tae both want yuri harems, but they’re “stuck” with Arisa and Rimi-rin.

  6. Ren says:

I don’t think Rokka is part of the game. I play it and don’t think I’ve come across her, unless she’s one of the new characters from RAS or something (RAS is not yet in the game and TBH, I have little interest in them, so I don’t follow them enough to know the names of their characters)

As others have pointed out, Roselia’s keyboardist is called Rinko (little misspelling there)

I don’t have any problems with the CG. I don’t really understand why people make a big deal of it, but oh well…we all have different opinions I guess.

Hope there will be more yuri in this season. I found the first season to have far less yuri candy than the game (although in both cases, goggles are needed).

      Anime original character then.

      Fixed.

      Not interested in CG rants.

The anime came before the game. Love Live! didn’t ramp up the yuri till the 2nd season.

I have no idea how some people think that Arisa is Kasumi’s number one, I mean no matter how I look at it Saaya is definitely Kasumi’s main heroine.

A really enjoyable start to the second season of BanG Dream!. Here’s hoping that we get plenty more yuri moments. More Kasumi & Arisa will be very pleasing, but I also feel that Ako & Rinko are another couple well worth keeping an eye out for. With at least 25 characters, there’s going to be quite a few potentially great yuri couples.
Rokka isn’t in the game, at least not yet anyway.
The winter season of anime has kicked off, not with a bang, but with a BanG Dream!.

Fingers crossed all couples get their time to shine this season or the next.

Haven’t played the games or kept up with BanG Dream media so the couples will be new to me. Very interested in how they all snuggle.

So for now Rokka’s an anime original. Got it.

      Indeed.

  9. The first yuri-friendly anime of the new year. Happy new year, by the way. The CG looks lovely to me but I wish the frame rate could have been better like in 60FPS. I think that is one of the reasons why people do not like CG. I have not gotten into this series for months but this is shaping to take over the year and the first episode speaks for it. Never seen the new glasses girl but I like her very much. The bands are already intriguing, even for those who are new to the series. Kaoru, Yukina, Ako, Sayo, and Hina are some of the girls to look out for. I really hope this anime will be popular enough so Bushiroad can abandon that worthless boy band. There is no need for that.

I enjoyed ep 1, CG and all. It does feel like you’re expected to play to game to get to know the rest of the bands, so I might be checking that out at some point.

Other than that, good first ep. Been looking forward to this for a while now and it’s off to a great start. Looking forward to more.

And as a quick side point, I like the CG and all, but as mentioned in a comment above, having a higher frame rate would probably improve it greatly. It does feel a bit chunky at times but until 60fps CG anime is a thing, this will have to do for the meantime.

We may learn more about the others over time.

      Indeed.

I have experience with 30FPS anime myself but glad to see you’re willing to put up with it in this case.

Great music, probably interesting characters with different personality for each in each group, there will be similarities but I don´t care. This is going to be nice, relaxed and warming show for harsh and cold winter with some little drama as season 1. I´m in 🙂

As for CGI, I think we had the first season mixed, performance was CGI and the rest was normal animaion. I don´t mind it. I don´t watch this show for visuals.

  13. Finally, more Bang! Dream!

First episode was a little confusing at moments partly due to the fact that I haven’t watched the shorts as much as I could’ve and so I kept going “Wait, which band were you from again? What was the name of said band? …And what was your name again?” and such…but since there we’ren’t that many bands, it was fairly manageable, even for someone who hasn’t played the game at all.

More Arisa being Arisa! Just what I needed! In a good way! (because she’s amusing)

And all the other band indeed look interesting and such, especially with the extra info here in the comments and such.

Looking forward to seeing where the season goes and all the performances we’ll see!

…Too bad Yuri is gone far off for a while, though…

And the CG looks pretty great to me, honestly.

Hopefully we’ll learn more about the other bands as the show progresses.

Arisa is love, just like her love for Kasumi.

      Yup.

      Same here.

      Such a pity.

Not Houseki no Kuni quality yet but no complaints on my end.

Me, as I read this: Wait, yuri is gone? I thought the first episode did a good job. Wait, capital Y. Yes, I miss her too.

I suspect this season will get better at introducing the other characters, but the band stories from the game are on YouTube. The shorts worked better as a followup than an introduction.

Great first ep, and I look forward to more!
The shorts were amusing, but am glad we’re finally getting something substantial.
Hoping they work Arisa’s song in!
