OG’s Winter 2019 Anime Picks

On paper the Winter 2019 season doesn’t look as hot as Fall 2018 was. On my end that’s because I don’t know what to expect from most of my picks. Even so I’m raring to go once it starts. As always the list isn’t final and is subject to change.

Picks are based on these two charts:

Chart 1

Chart 2

Endro Poster

Fantasy themed Girls Club show with characters designed by Namori. That’s all I need to dub this my #1 hype show of the season. Endroooooooooo!

BanG Dream 2nd and 3rd Season announcement

BanG Dream! 2

First of two new seasons. While I’m pumped to see Poppin’ Party again, especially Arisa, I’m more excited for the mainstream debut of the other bands. We already got glimpses of them in the bonus OVA and chibi shorts but this will be their time on the grand stage.

Kemono Friends Drawn Cover

Kemono Friends 2

I know some fans are worried the new staff involved with season 2 will mess up the awesomeness established last season, mainly because the Director left, but I’m willing to give them a chance.

Kakegurui 2.jpg

Kakegurui 2

Similar to Kemono Friends 2 several Nation members are worried this season won’t be as favorable due to how the first season concluded, or that it would harshly affect a certain arc in the manga they’re eagerly hoping would be done justice. Normally I’d add this one to the Curiosities section but like KF 2 I’ll give the writers a chance to do the right thing.

Magical Girl Spec OPS Asuka

Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka/Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka

The “Moepocalypse” show of the season. Be sure to mentally prepare yourselves this time, lest some of you want to be emotionally scarred/enraged like what happened with Happy Sugar Life. Honestly I’d recommend these people take a breather from Moepocalypse shows after that but…like in real life…when do people ever listen to me?

Manaria Friends Poster

Manaria Friends

The long awaited Shingeki no Bahamut spinoff centered around two lovely ladies. Hopefully like other spinoffs starring female leads it’ll be an enjoyable viewing experience for most of us in the Nation.

Kouya no Kotobuki.jpg

Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai

Japanese CG has never bothered me. It didn’t bother me watching Kemono Friends nor will it bother me here. Looks like an interesting show about female pilots. There’s another anime about cute and sexy girls flying air crafts but it reeks of het harem so I’ll stick with this one. Hopefully my blind faith won’t fail me.

Other stuff I’ll definitely check out are:

  • Maerchen Maedchen Episodes 11 and 12. The Blu-Rays show the animation has greatly improved so that’s a good sign. Most fans have understandably turned their backs on the show because of the backstage disaster involving mistreatment of staff among other things but I still believe in it and hope it has a satisfactory conclusion.
  • Ikkitousen: Western Wolves. It’s Ikkitousen. I love this series. More OVAs is a good thing.
  • Star Twinkle PreCure: 16th season of the Pretty Cure franchise.

Pastel Memories.jpg

Pastel Memories

Circlet Princess

Circlet Princess

Both these anime are based on mobile games. Fingers crossed they end up being easier to enjoy than the sheer nuisance that was Space Fishing. Give me something like Battle Girls High School or Schoolgirl Strikers and I’ll be content. Sure they won’t be amazing shows if that’s the case but at least they’d be watchable unlike Space Fishing.

Bermuda Triangle Anime.png

Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale

What’s the most logical step after an anime about zombie idols? Why an anime about mermaid idols of course! It’s a spinoff of the Cardfight Vanguard series. The girls look cute so that’s a step in the right direction.

Ame Iro no Cocoa Side G

Ame Iro no Cocoa: Side G

If previous seasons are any indication then the episodes will be very short. I’m mainly curious about the two hotties on the right.

Speaking of Shorts Mini Toji looks neat. It’ll hopefully be as fun as other chibi shorts anime.

I mentioned the former Director of the Kemono Friends anime leaving the project. Well this is his new project. I’m intrigued.

Update: Kemurikusa turned out to be a het anime.

Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!

I will be watching this anime but I have no plans on covering it weekly nor discussing it anywhere online, especially not via Private Messages. I just want to watch this one quietly and review it when it’s done.

Other shows I’m curious about: Flying Babies. A Girls Club about hula girls.

And there you have it.

    Must watch:
Endro: Only thing I can say about this that isn’t already here is ear nibbler.
Bang Dream! 2: I hope Pico lasts until the week before the premiere.
Third Aerial Girls Squadron (Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai): I’ve been curious about this one since I heard it had some Shirobako staff on it.
Mini Toji: More Toji no Miko stuff? Yes please.
Finally, the Final Two Episodes of Maerchen Maedchen: I’d pick up the light novels if I could.

    Will try:
Magical Girl Special Ops Asuka: I’m always curious about dark magical girl shows. Or non-dark magical girl shows.
    Manaria Friends: Could be interesting.
Pastel Memories: The manager worries me, but it sounds interesting.
    Circlet Princess
    Mermaid Idols
    Ameiro Cocoa
Wataten: I probably won’t be keeping up with this one, but I’ll still give it a try.

    Sword Art Online: Alicization
    Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken
    Fairy Tail: Final Season

Don’t force yourself Wataten if you don’t want to.

I’m not watching either of the fantasy leftovers myself though I do need to check out the Fairy Tail series at some point.

      • Mauron says:

I’m giving it a chance because of the yuri, but I suspect I’ll drop it quickly.

Fairy Tail is fun, and I’ve seen a couple decent yuri ships from it… and plenty of terrible straight ships.

  2. Kaylee R Smerbeck says:

Kind of a meh season tbh

  3. Umedyn says:

I’m happy Maerchen Maedchen episodes 11 and 12 are getting released, I had such high hopes for the show! I’m reading the manga for Wataten because yuri, and… it’s…. interesting? Kinda ewwie, but not overtly so, certainly not as blatant as another show out right now. I need to actually sit down and finish Kemono Friends, but REALLY looking forward to Endro~!

    • OG-Man says:

It’s been really good up to 10. Not perfect but quite enjoyable. Now with the improved animation it’s easier to enjoy the second time around.

Muscle Maid ain’t for everyone. That was made clear when the show was announced.

Hope you like the rest of Kemono Friends.

Endrooooooo! will be enjoyable for sure.

      • Umedyn says:

Muscle Maid sure isn’t for everyone (obviously) I still watch it, because yuri, but the main story isn’t my thing (the First Lieutenant is my favorite character, her chase I can get behind, and even though she is an EXTREME masochist, she at least has some common sense.)

    • OG-Man says:

      Midorin is love.

  4. Mike says:

I do feel we were spoiled this fall season but there are still some good options in the winter. My only complaint would be bang dream is going to be 3dcg. Hopefully it won’t hinder my enjoyment of the show too much.

  5. tsubasasfamily says:

Wow, lots of moe goodness to look forward to… as usual I’ll mostly be using Yuri Nation to decide what to watch. Right now the ones I’ll be checking out are:

    -Bang Dream S2
    -Kemono Friends S2
    -Kakegurui S2
    -Magical Girl Spec Ops
    -Manaria Friends
    -Bermuda Triangle
    -Pastel Memories

I’m pretty excited for all of these, with slight reservations with regards to how Kakegurui decides to proceed, but as long as there’s Yuri content there for me to enjoy I’m sure I’ll have a good time. Also hoping that, as much as I love the girls’ club vibe regardless, we’ll see a shoujo-ai tag and get some maintext in one or two 🙂

    • OG-Man says:

      Good choices.

Hopefully Kakegurui 2 will be as enjoyable as S1.

We’ll most likely get crushes as usual. If we’re lucky we may get some surprises like in every Girls Club show that aired in 2018.

  6. chikorita157 says:

Judging from the screenshots of the Blurry version of Maerchen Maedchen, it’s better and not a disaster as seen earlier this year. I kind of wished that they got it right the first time.

Endro, Bang Dream, Kemono Friends, and Watashi ni Tenshi are the obvious choices, but will only really cover the first two in full posts and the latter two in a weekly post. That said, I plan to read the source material for Watashi ni Tenshi.

    • OG-Man says:

Will watch the show again once the last Blu-Ray set is released next month.

Wataten I heard is less dangerous to watch/read than Muscle Maid so you’ll most likely be okay.

  7. Umu. It seems like there’ll be quite a few interesting ones to look forward to, indeed. Though I’ll reserve my hype for after this season ends, and maybe entirely until I’ve seen the first bits of the new season, and can tell for myself.

  8. Zack says:

Out of all of these shows the two that I’m most looking forward to are Endro and Kakegurui season 2.

Endro because Namori is working on it, and Kakegurui season 2 because I really liked the first season.

Speaking of Kakegurui: As much as I would like to see it get adapted, I get the sad feeling that the Tower of Doors arc from the manga won’t be adapted. Unfortunately, the anime original episode of the first season took its place. Luckily, it looks like this season will be adapting the Student Council Elections from the manga, and that has a lot of good moments.

I’ll probably give Kemono Friends season 2 the three episode rule, but I’m still upset over them firing the director. Fortunately, he’s also coming out with a new show this season. One that will hopefully live up to the spirit of the first season of Kemono Friends if this season can’t. The show is called Kemurikusa.

    Must Watch:
Bang Dream! 2nd Season – Loved the original, ready for more!
Endro! – I don’t think I can properly use words for the hype~
Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! – Not as hype as I was for UzaMaid, but It definitely should be lots of fun!…hopefully
Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai – The PV made it look very enjoyable, and there are cute girls, and pilots are kind of something I rather like, and yeah~
Kemurikusa – Forgot it was from the Kemono Friends director, but even without knowing that I was hype!
Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastale – Cute mermaid aidorus~ I’m not sure what else to say there

    Will watch:
Date A Live III – 2 had the worst character in the series, and was not nearly as good as the first season, but I’ve read in various places that the LN gets very good from this point on, so i will give it a shot
Tate no Yuusha – A good friend recommended me this, so I will give it a shot
Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka – I am bound to always give magical girl shows a try. There shouldn’t be too many raising projects in there.
Kemono Friends 2 – Still no Kaban-chan that I’ve seen, and many other reasons to be worried, but I will give it a shot nonetheless.
Grimms Notes the Animation – I love fairytales! Especially ones that are kinda morbid. Am curious how this will turn out and whether it’ll be an “easter egg” sort of show, or will end up melding the ideas together.

    There is interest:
Kakegurui XX – But I still haven’t seen the first season….>>
    Revisions – Could be interesting.
Pastel Memories – Description and PV screams that it will probably be harem, but maybe just maybe it won’t!
Egao no Daika – See Revisions
Circlet Princess – Am wary cause no loli, but it might be interesting.

Endro~! is one of my most anticipated shows of the season, and for very much the same reason as you.
Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka is another one I am looking forward to a lot, particularly as I have been collecting the manga.
And I guess I’ll round out my top three most anticipated shows with BanG Dream! 2, because I can never have too much Kasumi.

Maerchen Maedchen may have had its production issues, but I am happy that we will finally be able to see its conclusion.
I’ll watch Kemono Friends 2, but the lack of Kaban has only dulled any enthusiasm I had towards it. I’ll guess we’ll just have to see what happens with that one.

Of course, I am also looking forward to PreCure’s 16th season.

As is usually the case, I am interested in watching most of the shows you have highlighted here.

Hopefully Backpack will return in S2.

      Magical Spec-Ops looks pretty cool.

      More Bang Dream!

      Very excited for Maerchen’s conclusion.

Excited to see what PreCure 16 will have in store.

      Yes indeed.

I’m a little wary of kemono friends since they’ve shown everyone in the cast except the “child” which usually means a surprise Male in a cgdct anime.

  14. Giack31 says:

For now the only one that I’m sure on is Endro.
From the trailer Wataten didn’t really give me much lolicon vibes so I’ll probably check to out.
I have S1 of both Kemomo Friends and Kakegurui on my watch list so if I watch them before then I’ll probably check out S2.
I’m unsure on Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka. It looks like a dark magical girl show but more of a magical girl vs monsters than them fighting each other like usual. I think it’s more interesting like that.
Finally the last episodes of Maerchen Maedchen. I don’t have very hight expectation for them but i’ll definitively watch them. Do you think they will actually air or are Theo only in the blue-rays? That might make them harder to find.

One anime I’m super exited for is Black Fox. The trailer looks so cool. Too bad as far as I know they haven’t given a release date yet, right?

With the exception of Kemono Friends 2 and Manaria Friends, I’m watching everything else on the Must Watch list. Out of all the Must Watch though, Kakegurui stands above them all for me. Loved S1 and I’m super hyped for more of that.

On the Curiosities list I see a few that are on my considering list, but for the most part I’m not watching many of those. If any are worth while then I’ll take a look, but as for now it’s looking like a no.

As for my full list as of now, watching and considering:
    Egao no Daika
    Girly Air Force
    Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka
    BanG Dream S2
    Date A Live III
    Kakegurui XX
    Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai
    Ueno-san wa Bukiyou

I’m also continuing on with SAO as well from the fall. All in all there are some interesting looking shows, but overall it’s not as stacked as previous seasons it seems. I don’t know, maybe there will be some breakout show that will catch my attention, but as for now that’s what my list looks like.

I cannot wait for season two of Kakegurui. Hopefully the show made by the former Kemono Friends director does well. From the stuff I read he was treated very harshly by his past employer.

  21. LuzeriP says:

Here’s my Winter list. All of these are a must watch the premiere list. Watch couple episodes then decide later. Tho I rarely drop anime I’ve started.
    – Kakegurui xx : I loved the first one.
    – Manaria Friends : I’ve seen the first episode and I’m sold.
    – Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka : I’m ready for another Moepocalypse show.
    – BanG Dream 2 : I’d love to see more Kasumi x Arisa. And the other band member.
    – Girly Air Force : I’ll drop this if there’s an indication for a het harem route.
    – Kemono Friends 2 : I feel bad for the former director but I just have to check this one out.
    – Kemurikusa : Of course I have to check this one too.
    – Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! : Why not.
    – Endro : My most hyped. Looks gayer too, it’s Namori we’re talking about.
    – Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai : Compare to the other female pilots anime I kinda like this one.
    – Pastel Memories : The game is cute. And it’s all girls so of course I’ll watch this.
    – Circlet Princess : The girls look hot.
    – Mini Toji : It’s gonna be cute.
    – Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastrale : I never pass on any kind of idol anime
    – Ame-iro Cocoa: Side G : Too short, but I really looking forward to this.
    – Ikkitousen: Western Wolves : I’ll work my way on to this one.
    – Marchen Madchen : I’ve seen episode 9 and 10 blu ray version and it looked great. I can’t wait to see the rest of it.
God, it’s a lot. lol. I might pick up some from outside this list.

  22. LuzeriP says:

As for Pastel Memories, like many other mobile games, there’s a name calling for the player. Like Producer in Idolmaster or Admiral in Kancolle. I think that description is for the game. In the Pasumemo anime, I don’t see any male cast. I checked everywhere. I read somewhere that the anime is about a group of girls together trying to protect Akihabara. Even if there is a manager there’s a possibility that the manager is self-insert. Anyway, I might be wrong, it’s better just wait and see.

  23. FantasyGirlKanna says:

Top 3 I most definitely have my eyes on are: Kakegurui 2, Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka and Manaria Friends 😀

Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen, another bloody magical girl show, I read the manga before but that was a long time ago and I’ve already forgotten most of it since the manga hasn’t updated for a while.

For Wataten hmmm…Muscle Maid is more fun for me but I’ll still watch this.

  24. I think for Winter 2019 I’m gonna wait till the season’s more then half over to start any. I think doing that was key to how I enjoyed Winter 2017 so much. And none of these shows are particularly grabbing my attention right now, so it may be good to wait and see what the community is most compelled to Meme.
