Release the Spyce Episode 9: Spycy Past

We got to learn more about Master Yuki’s Master this episode.

Suspicious Mei is suspicious. Her sitting on Yuki’s lap was nice though.

Yuki hiding in Momo's closet.jpg

Always laugh whenever Master Yuki is secretly watching Momo.

Master Yuki was like “Momo. I went too far at Okinawa so to make up for it I’m inviting you out on a date.”

Momo was like “REALLY!? Wait…at 5:30 in the morning?”

Yuki and Momo selfie.jpg

Couples’ selfie. Master Yuki is a pro at taking them.

There was a very noteworthy scene before this but I’ll let readers see for themselves.

At sunset Master Yuki showed Momo the ruins of Moryo’s first base and proceeded to tell her about her Master.

Nagaho Fujibayashi.jpg

Nagaho Fujibayashi. Must have been related to Sheena.

As we recall Yuki’s family ran a martial arts dojo. One day she was visited by Katrina and her soon to be Master Nagaho. She first wanted to test her potential partner’s combat skills…

…which Nagaho was happy to oblige. Oh yes, and this was of course before Yuki lost her left eye.

Yuki wanted to learn from Nagaho how she got so strong. Her secret was the love she had to protect the city. It gave her the strength to do all she could for it. She called it the Tsukikage Spirit.

There was a time Yuki could express more than two emotions.

All went well…until “THAT NIGHT”.

I guess it’s another one of those “girls losing their superpowers as they grow older” plot points. Not a fan in all honesty. Just because girls grow up doesn’t mean they should lose the ability to lift large buildings upon reaching adulthood.

Nagaho vs Tendo.jpg

Nagaho vs Tendo.

After Nagaho made quick work of the old Moryo leader a familiar evil babe was eventually promoted to leader but not before facing off with our spunky Master in a duel where the sexy mistress of darkness got the scar she showed viewers. Then…IT happened.

We now know why Yuki fears the top of stairways.

Next time both sides will make their move and something bad will most likely happen to Yuki.

  1. Dante Smith says:

Nagaho was such an adorable goof, wish I could see her more or even a later adaptation of the light novel Golden Genesis. But will come must come and it sure hell did for Nagaho, rest easy now girl.

OR, she could somehow survive the explosions and was taken into custody by Moryo’s leader for research in the revival of the Spyce technology. And given that Yuki is among the top tier fighters of Tsukikage, for her to be in such a predicament (presumed in the preview), it’s most likely something related to her emotionally to make her vulnerable. (whispers like an assumed dead team member reappearing on the opposing side)

    Oh and this:
Momo: “Beautiful women still look like beautiful women even when viewing them from behind, right? Like you for example, Mentor.”

Oh girl, u sure know how to flatter (and be gay)

Mei was indeed suspicious at the beginning.
I really thought that Tendo would turn out to be Yuki’s mentor but I guess not. I’m kind of glad because that would have been a bit too obvious. Nagaho could still be alive though.
Momo solving the case by spotting cute girls was amazing.
Yuki also showed signs of staring to lose her powers last episode, that will probably be relevant next episode.
Another interesting bit was that the Space technology was originally used by Moryo.

Tendo being Yuki’s Master would have made no sense.

Her gayness came in handy. Very nice.

      Pretty much.

That was interesting info for sure.

Would be amusing if my first gut instinct actually turned out to be right XD

Some cute scenes. I feel this show has no idea what “international spies” means when they only seem to care about Sorasaki. I just wanted to finally voice this to someone, because it has been bugging me for a long time. They’re supposed to be this “shadow organization that’s been pulling the strings on the world since ancient times”…but they really only seem to operate in a single town.

Moving back to the episode: Guess we’ve finally hit the war.

    • Karandi says:

I’m with you on this question. Sorasaki seems to be in the middle of some fairly big global conspiracies and if Moryo knows that girls are in this town, why not attack elsewhere? Setting up a base in their homeground just seems kind of stupid.

      • K says:

The way I see it is that Moryo’s really invested in wiping Tsukikage out because Sorasaki, for some reason(plot convenience?), is the lynch-pin for their operations worldwide. It might be a “control Sorasaki, control the world” sort of deal. Besides that, there are those other leaders/benefactors that show up at those meetings, but they’re not that important to the plot.

Token shadowy douchebags who more often than not get caught once the big bad of the show is defeated. That or they run off an try to wipe their hands clean of the whole thing. As you said they’re not important to the main plot.

    • OG-Man says:

As K said Sorasaki is a very important city so wiping out Tsukikage will make Moryo’s plans for world domination a cinch. That’s about it really.

  4. Little Viktoria says:

    Poor girls.

This would really have been the time for Momo to hug Yuki, and not just because she loves her.

  5. K says:

I like how Mei casually sat on Yuki’s lap like it was nobody’s business.

Them not taking to the Spyce as well as they used to was mentioned near the beginning of the show but I feel ya. What surprised me a bit was that, from what Ms.Tendo said, Moryo was no stranger to Spyce power. She’s thinking that Spyce is more effective than drug enhancements. On the other hand, Moryo must have moved away from Spyce in the first place due to that critical drawback.

Nagaho went out with a bang…or did she? I don’t why I have this odd feeling but if she survived that explosion somehow, what if she is the “traitor”? If that’s the case, I thinking that she’d be an unwilling informant. Of course, that’s just a chaos theory.

From the preview, it sounds like Yuki’s walking down Nagaho’s path to the T. Hoping it doesn’t go that way.

      Could be wrong.

Ah yes. I forgot it was brought up at the beginning.
My best guess is either Moryo were the actual manufacturers of the Spyce or Tsukikage stole the recipe from them. My memory is blank on that part of the Tsukikage tour in episode 2. But yes, if this whole time Spyce was proven to be an unreliable power up and it has nothing to do with age then that’s a better explanation.

If Nagaho survived the explosion and turned out to be the traitor I’d be somewhat surprised. Not by her surviving (It’s happened before in some shows) but her being the traitor.

Probably. My prediction is she’ll lose her cool again fighting Tendo but Momo saves her at the last minute.

  6. Regarding the spyce growing weaker, perhaps it isn’t age as such, but continued use of it that lessens the effect? Like, the more you use it, the more your body grows used to it, and thus the less effect it has, or such? Though, of course, that would also appear alongside getting older if you keep using it continously.

Momo being a wonderful gay ninja again this episode. That scene with the rice-on-the-cheek. Oh yes.

And that’s how Yuki got her scar, and her overprotectiveness, and lost her Master, huh…and essentially, through her own mistake, rushing at her opponent without a plan, getting herself and her Master in trouble and out of balance…

I do indeed wonder if Nagaho is still alive…we were never shown her body, after all, even if there was a lot of blood and an explosion. The bad girl still survived handily, maybe she did too. And it’s the one way they could have a traitor outside of the current Tsukikage team and with an effect on them too, when it gets revealed…though it could still be Natsume’s old Master too, maybe to protect them in a roundabout twisted way after finding out she can’t be a spyce spy any more due to the spyce losing effectiveness?

And now the leader is known to Tsukikage (though perhaps not that she’s the leader of the Far East branch), and the final stage is set, huh…hyped for the next episode.

And amazing OST again this episode!

That’s also a good possibility. Point being it’s an unreliable power up.

Momo’s love for Yuki is wonderfully adorable.

Important characters surviving explosions isn’t out of the ordinary in works of fiction so it’s possible she survived. Her being the traitor would be a surprising and interesting turn of events. Katrina remains a prime suspect.

We’re reaching the climax, that’s for sure.

      The soundtrack is great.

The pedant within me can’t help but critique Moryo’s schemes. Bringing down every satellite in the world on top of important installations of the world’s major powers? As far as world conquest plans go it’s… problematic. It’d be all too easy for early-warning radars to erroneously register them a nuclear ICBM re-entry vehicles and the results of that sort of misinterpretation would be rather… apocalyptic. Well, it’s not like cartoon villainous crime organizations are that good at thinking things through. The current mind control gas plan seems more solid though…

  8. Platon says:

One important flashback and nice date for them two. With the photo, Yuki was happy taking it even if she was like, we need to do it anyway as part of our cover.

Yukis master can really be the traiter but in this case it might not be willingly or she might not know about it, she could be under some kind of drug. I still think she is dead.

Mei sitting on Yuki’s lap was a great start to the ep.

Nice to see Momo and Yuki going on a date, even if the ep wasn’t really focusing on that, still nice to see them having a good time together.

The backstory segment was good, gave us insight as to why Yuki is so serious all the time. Sad to see her partner die like that as she watched helplessly. Terrible.

Didn’t see you mention it, but that little comment Momo made to Yuki about beautiful women as they were looking through the camera feed was pretty damn smooth.

I still find the Moryo leader to be quite beautiful indeed, even if she killed Yuki’s old partner.

Another spycy ep. Looking forward to more!

    • OG-Man says:

I was a bit suspicious of that but it most likely was just her being smooth.

We got the abridged version of it but they had a good time and that’s what matters.

It was hard to watch. Poor dear.

Definitely should have hinted at that. Others here already did. Momo hitting on Yuki every chance she gets.

Fall 2018 had some amazing heels like Akane from Gridman and the Moryo leader.

      We all are.
