Summer has been a most interesting season to say the least. While I’m not covering every show I’m still watching rest assured I have yet to drop any show I talked about at least once this season, even curiosities. In the sense of fairness I’ll briefly share my thoughts on the other shows I’m watching so fans can find out if anything has changed since the last time I talked about them.

Chio-chan and Manana. Best friends, possibly more.
First up we have my reigning #1 comedy of the season, Chio-chan’s School Road. It’s still the best of the four comedies I picked up. Chio-chan and Manana are definitely best friends. They bicker and fight a lot but when push comes to shove there’s no one they could rely on more than each other. Chio-chan’s crazy predicaments she gets to on her way to school remain hilarious along with her inner monologues. The side-characters are also fun but the one who stands out is a certain true hero.

Madoka Kushitori. A true hero.
Fans watching the show with me shouldn’t be surprised that Madoka Kushitori is my favorite character. An inspiration to lesbians and tachis everywhere ever since her debut. She doesn’t show up very often but when she does I am blessed by her brilliance. As for her critics…I don’t see what’s so bad about the dozens of Madoka Kushitoris in the world compared to the thousands of anime males who I argue are usually much worse than she is. I won’t stop critics from bashing her but to tell me she’s one of the worst of her kind is BULLSHIT. There’s good reason I call her an inspiration and those who get it know what I mean.

This was fun.
Asobi Asobase is still my #2 comedy. For some the comedy lessened over time because it didn’t make as much sense. For me I knew what I was getting myself into after the premiere, random stupid comedy. Random stupid comedy is my jam along with the still fabulously crazy facial expressions. For those wondering I find things like fart jokes and making fun of het romance amusing. None of it is mean spirited after all.

A snake demon, her gorgon girlfriend and a “basic” naughty babe.
Jashin-chan Dropkick is #3 (may become #4 depending on how the 4th comedy I’m watching goes). The streak continues of it only getting me to laugh moderately hard once (twice if lucky) per episode. Slapstick comedy is hard to get right for me. I’ll go into more detail when I review the show but I don’t find Jashin-chan very funny. Case and point. Mei Tachibana. Why does Madoka Kushitori work but not Mei Tachibana? Because Mei Tachibana is (so far) simplistic. Apart from her being a PASSIONATE collector of random stuff her yuri-ness feels…plain compared to others of her and Madoka’s kind. There’s something missing is what I’m saying.

One of the few times I laughed hard.
Like I said above each episode so far has managed to have one or two segments that made me laugh. The best one in the show so far was the one the above pic is from. It showed signs of brilliance…That and I enjoy well done jokes at the expense of humanity. Let’s face it, the human race sucks and us getting ridiculed is wonderful when done right like it was in this segment. From the victim of Jashin-chan’s righteous fury and that one random guy. It was admittedly well done.
Favorite character is Medusa because she’s gay for Jashin-chan and a pure soul. Least favorite character is Pekola because I don’t like her style of “comedy” at all. Also, unlike our future ruler Satanichia, Pekola doesn’t have anywhere near as much charm as a character.
Next up is Hanebado. I’ll keep this one simple. So far watching this show feels similar to how I felt watching Stella Women’s Academy Group C-3. The sport itself is great. The badminton itself and the attention to detail on the ladies’ sexy muscles remains fantastic and the main reason to watch this show. However, like C-3 the drama is “take it or leave it”. Personally it’s not the worst drama out there but not something I’m particularly invested in. Basically I came for the sexy badminton and am staying for the sexy badminton. As for “Yandere Ayano”…Satou’s much better. Ayano, again, is great on the court but her story arc is whatever. Nagisa (after calming down), Riko and Elena are my top 3.

Miku is delightful.
Lastly we have Ongaku Shoujo TV. I will go into more detail when I fully review the show but unless people are furious that the original songwriters aren’t involved or just aren’t feeling it I would say OS TV is an interesting take on the idol genre. It’s like where the show is going, the kind of development the girls have, it’s all different from the norm somehow. The most recent episode as of this writing, starring Miku, is proof of that. Sure there are some familiar elements such as Uori as a character but other than that it’s different enough to be considered a “sleeper” of the season.
The only reason Western fans would say Revue Starlight is the “sleeper” is because the show is on HiDive and not many people are willing to invest in HiDive as far as I know.

Hinata watching Aoi working.
Oops. I almost forgot Yama no Susume 3. My bad. Anyway it’s still delightful and relaxing seeing the girls climbing different mountains as Aoi prepares for her big rematch against Mt Fuji. It’s also nice seeing the girls doing other things like working, studying or making new friends. It sounds better in motion than described. Also Aoi X Hinata is as strong as ever. The most recent episode (as of this writing) was an excellent one because we usually see the relationship from Aoi’s perspective. This week (as of the date of this writing) we got Hinata’s, which was wonderful.
My Summer 2018 Power Rankings are as follows:
- Harukana Receive.
- Revue Starlight
- Happy Sugar Life
- Chio-chan
- Yama no Susume 3rd Season
- Asobi Asobase
- Ongaku Shoujo TV
- Tie between Jashin-chan Dropkick and High Score Girl (the 4th comedy I’m watching but it’s het so won’t discuss it here)
- HANEBADO!
Hugtto! PreCure and Aikatsu Friends! are technically not Summer anime as they premiered earlier in the year but both are really good.
I also plan on jumping on the Cells at Work bandwagon but it’s more of a het show so no coverage until the end of the year. There’s another show I’ll be checking out soon but I’ll save that as a surprise.
This season is really great for comedy anime.
Asobi Asobase is currently my favourite anime of the season. I usually find this kind of comedy really hit or miss but there is something about it that really works and it’s been a solid show so far.
Chio-chan’s School Road is also really good. I do like Kushitori but I thought that her appearance in the last episode was bit on the creepy side (especially with old man).
Another good one (although not yuri in the slightest) is Mr. TONEGAWA Middle Management Blues.
Music Girls is pretty interesting and nice to watch. I like that the MC has more a manager role instead of becoming an idol herself. Also the glasses are a LIE.

Nothing new when it comes to pervy characters. At least she likes girls around her age.
Pervy old man being there is the oldest trick in the book.

Madoka is a true lesbian hero indeed. I mean, after days on camping and brutal training she accepts her true identity, Kabaddi player and girls’ loving. I found that very noble. Too bad the show has a lot of side characters, she didn’t get a lot of screen time. Just give me at least one full episode about her, I’ll be happy.
Asobi is my most favorite comedy this season. Even though sometimes the jokes are weird and stupid but still makes me laugh a lot. I don’t know, I like the voice acting in this. Of course Chio-chan is hilarious as well.
I need to catch up on Jashin-chan. I still on episode 4, Medusa is my favorite. She’ll do anything for the person she loves even when people think that person isn’t good enough for her, that’s normal and it happens a lot in real life. But Jashin-chan is a lot of work, huh. Good luck Medusa.
Hanebado, I agree with everything you said. I’m fine with heavy drama, but at least give me some happy times so I don’t get bored. And Ayano, I still haven’t figure out her character s yet. I liked her in the manga though.
I’m planning on marathoning Ongaku Shoujo when it finished, so let’s found out then. But what’s ‘sleeper’ means?

Exactly. You got the message of that segment. She’s one of those side-characters who stand out in anime but sadly don’t get much screen time. Let’s hope she’ll appear again soon.
The voice acting in Chio-chan and Asobi are excellent. Chio-chan’s seiyu helps make her inner monologues even funnier than they already are.
Oh yes. Medusa is best girl and her relationship with Jashin-chan is one only they could understand. On the surface it’s very unhealthy but deep down there’s so much more between them. But yes Medusa’s patience is godlike to love someone like Jashin-chan.
Some fans of the manga say the anime is a disgrace due to it not adapting her properly or going overboard with the drama. Still a decent watch thanks to the sexy badminton.
Good idea. So far it’s been interesting and enjoyable but we’ll see how it is by the end.

“Sleeper” refers to sleeper hit.

Chio’s School Road: Fun and bizarre. While I like a good pervy girl, I prefer they either have just a dirty mind or a willing target.
Asobi Asobase: I miss the puppets! I’m glad someone finally explained the rules to Shogi. Still practicing, but I’ll get it down.
Jashin-chan Dropkick: I find it funny while I watch it, but it never leaves a strong impression on me.
Hanabad: The drama’s a little over the top, but it’s still keeping me interested.
Ongaku Shoujo: Meat rivals are great. Needs more cats beating people up. A certain character is rather useless, and almost feels redundant with the MC.
Yama no Susume: Always a great show. I liked Aoi’s choice of song in the karaoke episode. I haven’t caught the latest episode yet, but I probably will tonight.
BanG Dream! PICO: Having played the game, it’s fun watching some of the other bands be goofy on screen.
Cells At Work: Very informational. Platelets are adorable and tiny.
Planet With: An interesting series that keeps me wondering what they’re going to do next. Also Harumi and Miu make a cute couple.

Embrace the naughtiness. Purity is blind.
Best of luck. That or watch Shion no Ou.
Sexy badminton is good.
True. That character is useless but it could have been worse.
Watch the latest episode and be elated.
It’s a fun little appetizer along with the Pastel Palettes shorts.
Gotta watch that one.
I’m waiting to see what’s said about Planet With once it’s over.

I enjoy both embracing and naughtiness, but a happy target is always better than someone desperately trying to flee. Both are reasons I assumed Nijimin joined the idol band Dog Play because that’s what she was into.
Shion no Ou does not appear to have people firing lasers from their butts.
I caught up on Yama no Susume. Poor Hinata was lonely without her Aoi.

I came here to say that yes, indeed, Madoka is amazing and should be regarded as a hero of the nation. Others’ “creepy”=my “hilarious”. Sometimes you just gotta lighten up your perception and bask in the lesbian glory, you know?

It’s not like she’s eyeing little girls either. Gotta stop thinking all lesbians are pure of heart because we all know that isn’t true.
So yes, relish the naughtiness and applaud Madoka’s acceptance of her true self.

On the note of Chio-chan’s school road, I’m fairly sure that Yuki (the exhibitionist runner girl) has a thing for girls too. Maybe a thing for Chio as well (notice that right after she rejected the guy’s confession and he asked if she knew anyone interesting, she immediately brought up her meeting with a certain very cute girl. I have a hunch that she witnessed Chio doing her usual shenanigans and realized that she’s another ‘secret outlier’, which prompted her to seek out her companionship). Furthermore, the face she made when Madoka embraced her while explaining the rules of Kabaddi was embarrassed yet intrigued (in a “dunno what’s going on, but I don’t hate this” way.)

Excellent observation dood! Yuki may very well lean more towards women.

Yes, Asobi Asobase is definitely something, mostly because some of the comedy is dumb. But yes, the characters are fun.
Ongaku Shoujo is still fun to watch and it’s nice to see a different approach. Still, kind of interesting that Hanako’s online friend happens to be Uori herself, despite initial resistance from her in the first few episode. Yes, the producer is kind of useless.

Random and stupid comedy is my jam.
True that. OS TV is a good kind of different.

Yama no Susume seems like it will need special coverage next week, with the ending of the latest episode, things might get serious.

Maybe. We shall see.

Ok, I was a bit off in this prediction, it seems drama started, but it will truly kick in next episode, seems to be a two-parter.
Jashin-chan on the other hand went full serious this week without a punchline that damaged anything that happened, so maybe that show needs coverage now, because I doubt another episode will get as serious as this one. Or maybe if not specifically Jashin-chan, a post about “abusive” relationships and how they work together in general?

Chio is my current comedy of the season as well! I personally like Chio/Manana more. Probably Chio the best. I cannot not laugh at this show XD
Jashin-chan is also pretty hilarious, but I think it has less of a comedy lean than Chio, yet I still find myself very consistently enjoying it~ I like Pekola, Yurine is my personal favorite character so far.
Ongaku Shoujo is easily my surprise of the season. It totally floored me at the end of the first episode, and it’s provided such a different take on the usual formula and it’s so very enjoyable~ The producer is basically Hanako’s figurehead. Since she’s not an adult yet, she needs an adult to be the mouthpiece that the MiS (Men in Suits) will listen to. So he does have a purpose…until Hanako is to the point where she’s respected properly for all her amazing talent and knows the full ins and outs of being a “producer”.
It was very sad watching the recent Yama….but at least there were a few really sweet segments to help offset that ;_;
My Rankings probably (many of these fight each other fiercely for spots, so don’t take huge stock in what is where.):
1. Revue Starlight
2. Harukana Receive
3. Happy Sugar Life
4. Chio-chan
5. Ongaku Shoujo
6. Jashin-chan
7. Bang Dream PIco
8. Yama
Everything else is stuff that started before this season. Overlord 3 has been kinda….okay. Hoping it picks up soon.
Ongoing Shows rankings:
1. Hugtto Precure
2. Kiratto Prichan
3. GeGeGe no Kitarou/Aikatsu Friends
4. Hero Academia
5. Black Clover

chio-chan is great.
Ongaku Shoujo will be the “sleeper” of the season. I’m sure of it.
Good rankings there dood. Collecting GeGeGe episodes to marathon when I’m in the mood.

When you do, just be prepared. 1: Yuri in it is at best just a shipper’s fantasy. 2: The show is very heavy with material at times, and is not afraid to explore the darker parts of this world

I know it’s not a yuri show. Hot kitty has it in for the male lead if I’m not mistaken.
I’m used to the darkness.
