Plot Summary: Aya Asagiri is a young girl who has fallen victim to bullies at her school. Looking for a way to escape her troubles, she looks to the Internet for distraction, when a mysterious website called “Magical Girl Site” appears. Simply viewing the page is all it takes to hurtle Aya headlong into the deadly world of the Magical Girl Apocalypse. There, it’s fight or die, against a seemingly endless array of savagely adorable, frilly-skirted killing machines, each armed with magical powers and an unquenchable thirst for blood and chaos.

When it comes to my experience with the “Moepocalypse” subgenre of dark shows I am familiar with two kinds: Ones that slowly descend to madness and ones that immediately start off morbid. Magical Girl Site is an example of the second. In fact, the first episode is one of the hardest I had to sit through watching these kinds of shows. It was painful on purpose. Another way this show is darker than most other Moepocalypse shows? NONE OF THE GIRLS WEAR TRADITIONAL CUTE FRILLY MAGICAL GIRL DRESSES! Oh the horror…Throughout the show the darkness rarely faded and when our heroines had some time to relax the reprieve was always short lived as the darkness loomed ever so closely waiting to ruin the girls’ lives at a moment’s notice. Basically the show has its moments that are not as cruel but it does not take long for the bloody chaos to resume and boy does it get bloody and outright disturbing at times.

Other than there being downright cruel and disturbing moments throughout the show, for the most part it is what veterans of Moepocalypse shows expect, the heroines continuously being physically and emotionally tortured as they fight other magical girls to survive. Now I am certain veterans reading this will notice it having a similar premise to Magical Girl Raising Project, meaning it is a Battle Royale with magical girls. It kind of is at first but as the story progresses and more is revealed about what is really going on viewers will realize it is a story with a BR setup instead of it being centered around BR like MGRP was. Also there are quite a few surprises that I personally did not expect or had a feeling it could happen but when it did happen the show added an extra spicy twist to the reveal.
What happened in this scene was a very critical moment for Tsuyuno.
The animation is good. I cannot say much about it. It fits the mood quite well. The ladies range from adorable to fetching and the “mascot” of the show is possibly the creepiest I had seen. No devil hidden being a cute exterior this time around. Pardon my language but Nana is fucking creepy. Because it is voiced by Ryusei Nakao I consistently referred to the creepazoid as Frieza. It was a match made in Hell. The soundtrack is as somber as one would expect. The OP and ED are personal favorites of the Spring 2018 season.
The character development is shown via torture. See, the one spoiler I will give is that the titular Magical Girl Site (obviously) shows itself to girls living miserable/unfortunate lives or have had a very traumatic experience that scarred them for life. The suffering of some is shown while others are hinted as to what had happened to make them see the site. The characters range from likable, somewhat unlikable but not irredeemable, some wastes of flesh, be it a relative or a certain obsessed person…and then there is the one I dubbed Garbage Boy…

Garbage Boy is the kind of villain I despise in any kind of show. That being the kind you are written to be hate and want to see get theirs but it takes a LOOOOOOOONG TIME for them to pay for their cruelty…and it is not always guaranteed they pay for what they had done. I will spoil Garbage Boy’s story because he is not worth exploring…at all. Basically his father is a perfectionist and he beat Garbage Boy up if he did not live up to expectations to the point he saw humanity as inferior, dubbed himself a god among humans and worst of all was how he let out his daily frustration…by brutally abusing Aya. The worst part is that people like Garbage Boy are VERY REAL!
Same goes for Aya’s bullies though it is worth keeping an eye on their admittedly attractive redhead leader.

I will keep the Yuri part of the review short. All readers to know is Aya and Tsuyuno’s relationship is personally the main draw of the show. Well for some is the darkness and the magical girl battles but their relationship is very important. Speaking of these two Aya is the classic Moepocalypse protagonist who dislikes hurting others despite having been constantly hurt herself but even so she is one of the better leads in that despite her passiveness she slowly becomes stronger while still struggling with her innocence. I personally enjoyed her journey and kind of understood her mindset though also understand others disagreeing with her passiveness. Tsuyuno comes off as stoic but unsurprisingly has a skeleton or two in her closet. As I said their relationship is one of the best parts of the show.
I did not talk about the magical girl battles because they are what readers would expect from a dark magical girl show, brutal but worth watching.
One more thing worth mentioning is the conclusion. Unfortunately it is a “manga lure” kind of ending…but on the bright side it ends in a way that, should the show do well enough to warrant a second season, it could easily continue from where this season ended so it is admittedly a good one. Oh and based on our good friend Rory‘s thoughts on the show the anime is faithful to the manga and adapted most of it quite well. The only thing that could have been done better in the anime was a certain side-girl’s development. Nothing major.
Overall Magical Girl Site is as some manga readers said, one of the darkest Moepocalypse shows out there and definitely not for everyone. Even so for viewers who can handle the darkness it is a very good one. The plot may start off as a Battle Royale story but expect some game changing surprises. There are likable characters, not so likable, annoying ones and of course Garbage Boy. The presentation is good, the magical girl fights are brutal and some flashy. I forgot to mention there being some kind of relaxing and sexy moments but they are far and few. Relish the sexiness while you can. Lastly Aya X Tsuyuno is wonderful. Viewers who can stomach the first episode and the other gruesome moments that await are welcome to give it a try. However, I advise people who were upset by what they saw early on not to continue. I have seen enough people forcing themselves to continue only to end up complaining more.
PS: Alongside the leading ladies my favorite secondary magical girl is this one, Sayuki. Actually everyone in the team she is a part of are pretty cool. There is even a transgender girl.
The Yuri Empire 
Aya X Tsuyuno reached Nanoha X Fate status.
A lot of people gave this show crap, and I understand why, but I couldn’t help liking it. Watching Aya and Tsuyuno develop together made it all work, and it worked for me because of all the horrible things happening around them. They literally had lost any reason to live…except each other.
It’s certainly not for everyone, but for what it is, despite its flaws, I think it’s actually pretty good.

It depends on how people respond to strong violence involving cute girls. I dunno. Critics probably wouldn’t have been as harsh if it were older characters going through the same torture But that’s the point of the Moepocalypse subgenre, making teenage girls go through physical and emotional torture and hope they survive the hellish landscape they’re in.

I disagree with the comment about people not being able to stomach the first episode not continuing. I really think most people overblow how “graphic”/”disturbing” this really is. the first episode was probably the peak of that tbh.
It was plenty of despair and tough to watch things, but I really do believe that anyone who could make it through something like say madoka, could make it through this.
And the journey is definitely worth it!

Meduca Meguca nowadays has become the tamest of them all. Heck even Daybreak Illusion is more intense. That is because other Moepocalypse shows ramped up the violence. Depending on who you ask that’s either good or bad.

Ah yes that first episode was so brutal. I’m glad I kept watching, but I don’t think I can watch that first episode again. I can stand scary or gory thing but bullying is too hard for me. And that’s right, if you don’t have the stomach for it please don’t watch, you just gonna upset yourself. I keep hearing people complaining how bad the show is or how the author hates their characters and so on, well that’s their opinion. I liked it a lot. And we have a confession in the end that makes me happy. I’m positive we’ll get a second season.

Not surprised by the exaggerated negative reactions.

The first episode was like a gallery of edge, and after that it become a different, more personal kind of dark. I enjoyed the series – especially how it became a yuri show somewhere along the road, and thought it was very enjoyable throughout. Probably gonna be my aots-

Apparently all they did was remove the “unnecessary” parts from the manga, such as a third boy who merely existed, though one girl’s development was affected. Otherwise the story for the most part was the same up to 11. 12 was supposedly an original finale. Hopefully it somehow gets a 2nd season.

I liked it, for what it’s worth. Maybe not quite my AotS, as Comic Girls and Hinamatsuri exist, but still, pretty good.

More Ayatsuyu confessions and Aya literally saving Tsuyuno with the power of love aaa. Also, everyone actually ended up surviving! I’m amazed, tbh. I wonder if everyone did in the manga?
That lighting sword strike from above, though. Now that was badass.
And it’s another magical girl behind the Admins and their ways, huh? Interesting.

When the twist happened last episode I was worried about the ending but they actually managed to resolve things in a pretty good way.
Aya and Tsutuno’s relationship is great. It looked like one was going to die but I’m glad they didn’t.
The final scene with Garbage Boy was pretty shocking but he totally deserved that.
I strongly disagree with some things that were used only create more drama and edgy thing to happen but overall it was a good anime.

Esto no es un adiós, es un hasta luego. Me gustó la historia aún cuando era demasiado cruel con Aya-chan y justo cuando pareciera que la vida se estaba ensañando con ella, obtuvo su “varita”, si eso fue malo al principio, fue gracias a esto que conoció a Tsuyuno que todo comenzó a cambiar. El TsuyuAya es como un flor en medio de un pantano, porque ambas se tienen la una a la otra por lo que fue lo mejor.
Mi personaje secundario favorito fue Shioi, al principio era una desquiciada pero poco a poco se fue suavizando. Me gustó como molestaba a Tsuyuno no permitiendo que tuviera intimidad con Aya en el capítulo del baño y luego burlandose diciéndole que no se podían bañar juntas. Creo que cada chica mágica del otro sitio (incluyendo a Kiyo-chan) eran los más agradables.
Nomino al “oni-chan” como la peor basura del año, que horror, saco de podredumbre como insulto se queda corto, no es suficiente lo que le pasó al final de la serie. En este caso aplica ese dicho de que el mejor enemigo es el enemigo muerto, ojalá que muera y tenga un funeral barato.
Leí el manga y en comparación con la serie puedo decir que no es lo que esperaba pero estoy satisfecha, la esencia está ahí y lo único que no me gustó fue agregar la confirmación del TsuyuAya y la chica tiburón. La aparición y objetivo de “El Rey” asumo que es un spoiler para los que siguen el manga. Hasta el capítulo 55 no hay nada sobre este personaje ¿que le habrá pasado?
Para terminar quisiera señalar que esos espermatozoides revoloteando como mosquitos se me hizo tétrico y perturbador.

Not for the faint of heart but those who did stick around went for quite the ride. I personally enjoyed this show quite a bit. Yes it had it’s gruesome moments but it had some really good moments too, like the Aya X Tsuyuno side of the show. Honestly I really did like them as a couple and by the end I really enjoyed watching their adventures as they not only drew closer but struggled with all the problems around them. Nice to see Tsuyuno also confess her love, even if it were her dying words. As of now my only draw back is the ending, if they don’t announce a second season. I’d love to see more of this show and see how the rest of the story plays out so I really don’t want this to be a “read the manga” ending. This one also got an 8/10 from me.

It was emotionally draining at times with its more brutal scenes but as you said it had plenty of good stuff going for it and Axa X Tsuyuno’s journey was beautiful.
Oh yes. I too hope we get a second season at some point. It would be a shame for it to end as a “manga lure”.

Dark and gruesome stuff, but I’m weird enough to enjoy it with little reservation. I really enjoyed this show and I feel all the characters had their charm, though Aya and Tsuyuno were clearly the fan favs. I really liked Red and the Psycho too. (Kind of low key ship them) I was so freaking happy to see Garbage Boy get his due in the end and reaping his karma straight up his @ss (literally XD). It ended in a way that could easily lead to a season two, which I hope we get, but if we don’t, I might just consider checking out the manga.

Aya and Tsuyuno’s romance was wonderful.
Shioi has the hot body and fun attitude while Sarina’s face turn helped her be a bit more likable. Plus she too is admittedly hot.
We can hope Garbage Boy’s “rejuvenation” is an eternal one. He deserves all the “therapy” the “investigator” is willing to provide.
Hopefully we’ll get an animated continuation one day.

Final ep:
Whoa, it actually worked out in the end, with both Aya and Tsuyuno coming out of that battle alive and well and Nana obliterated. They get to live to see another day together…a while longer anyway.
Sayuki certainly lived up to the nickname you gave her with that epic lightning slash. She rode the Dragon Stream to victory.
What happened to Kaname at the end…well, he always did say that God blessed him with such an irresistible body. He can’t say that God forsook him now, can he?
The King that the admins answer to reminds me of a very important character from the third Corpse Party game. They almost look alike to me.
Overall, I enjoyed this show and didn’t really have a problem with how brutal it got. Aya/Tsuyuno’s a very good pair and they totally deserve each other. Now I’m just wondering if Magical Girl of the End will get animated.

I almost gave up on this show but am glad I persevered to the end. The Aya x Tsuyuno moments were really sweet and made the entire show worth it. I’m still waiting for the yuri doujinshi about them. I couldn’t stop laughing when Kaname got what he deserved in the end.
