We were treated with a double feature premiere of horsies. Our mission to find as many gay horsies as possible has begun.
After learning this show set in an alternate Earth where horse girls exist alongside humans we joined our heroine Special Week (Race horses are known for having unusual names but I have a theory why our lead cutie was named that) looking for the school she would be attending, Tracen Academy, but got lost. A nearby attendant helped her out a bit and then asked if she wanted to go check out the race track. She figured since there was plenty of time before curfew she would accept. #Foreshadowing
At the track she would meet the horsie that would forever change her life, Silence Suzuka. One of the best newcomers in the current generation.
Unfortunately she also met this guy who “professionally” checked out her legs to see how strong she was. As long as they keep his perversion to a minimum and/or he gets destroyed often like in episode 2 I’ll tolerate his presence. Anyway they saw Suzuka easily dominate the race and Special was left in awe.
So the first excuse to include idol performances in this show is that the top three racers would have to perform a song after the end of the race.
The next day Special tried to make a good first impression but failed. she met some of her classmates, the one who stood out was El Condor Pasa because she’s American (Probably from Texas or Mexico), is NOT BLONDE (The sky must be falling) and wears a kind of luchadora mask. Possibly ship her with Grass Wonder.
The other two horsies who quickly approached Special.
There are other horsies who popped up throughout the two episodes which tells me this is going to be another one of those shows where the cast is huge but a select few will get the spotlight. Anyway they talked about the teams and Special mentioned wanting to be on the same one as Suzuka. Grass Wonder said there would be a qualifying race to join the group Suzuka was in. Special entered immediately.
Before the race the coach asked the girls what their goals were. When she got to special she said she wanted to become the best horse in Japan as a promise to her mom which got the others to laugh at her. It didn’t help that Suzuka wasn’t there.
After the whistle Special had a delayed start. Luckily for her she spotted Suzuka watching from afar. She remembered the technique Suzuka used in her race and used it herself to the surprise of everyone. Unfortunately due to her delayed start she came in 2nd place. El Condor Pasa won the race just as Grass Wonder hoped from the looks of it.
So yeah. Despite not winning the race and being “horsenapped” Special got her wish of joining the same team Suzuka’s in, Team Spica. Suzuka explained her goal of inspiring everyone to follow their dreams by watching her race. Special was touched by her words and joined the team. Not only that they got to be roommates. The trainer/coach/whatever then told Special her debut race would be the following week shocking our heroine.
EPISODE 2
After a funny dream and a day of class discussing Triple Crown Winners Special was called to meet with Symboli Rudolph, a Triple Crown Winner. Like special I didn’t pay much attention to what she said. Probably motivating Special to give it her all at the academy or something like that.
The two things worth pointing out from the scene with Rudolph was the introduction of Tokai Teio, who dreams of being a Triple Crown Winner like her dearest Rudolph.
The other thing was this saying. I imagine it’ll play an important role later on.
All throughout the week Special was really nervous. The dorm girl asked Suzuka to be there for Special because where she was from she never got to make friends with other horsies. One night as Suzuka saw Special nervously adjusting her hoof shoes and asked her about her goal of becoming a Top Horse Girl.
Special explained in detail that it was a promise made to her moms. The Horse Mom who gave birth to her asked her human wife to help train Special to become a Top Horse Girl before passing away. Anyway I think Special Week’s name comes from the week she was born being a special one.
Thus human mom did what her late spouse asked of her and trained their beloved pony as best as she could, bruises and all. One day we WILL get another anime featuring a daughter raised by her lesbian moms and BOTH OF THEM BEING ALIVE! Nanoha cannot be the only one. Also #Foreshadowing again during the training montage.
Moving right along the big day had arrived and Special was still nervous. Trainer Guy asked Suzuka to give her the bib he intentionally forgot to hand her. Suzuka reminded Special of the promise she made to her moms and told her she’d be there to help her achieve that goal. Special was comforted by Suzuka’s support and her nervousness washed away.
During the race Special faced her first rival who played dirty. Thankfully Human Mom’s training paid off and she was able to use what she learned to dodge the opponent’s attacks to win her debut race.
Before the end of the episode Trainer Hana, pissed off she lost Silence Suzuka to Trainer Guy’s team most likely, to tell him she wasn’t impressed by Special Week’s victory. Trainer Guy told him to keep a close on Special from now on.
I imagine these two are a foe-yay ship.
For now these are the ships I noticed. We’ll see how many of them become OTPs or even Super Mega OTPs.
I was thinking the same thing when say she have two moms

Urgh, that male-coach-in-a-all-girls-team cliche was an absolute bummer for me so I’ll have to wait to see how things go in the next few eps.
Kinda wishing for 1 of the girls to actually back kick him so hard the damage is permanent.

A pain he is but as long as he keeps his hands to himself from now on it won’t be too bad.

Oh please, you are merely postponing the inevitable. This is idolmaster with horse girls and a trainer guy. I am so sick and tired of these yuri fans going after CGDCT (/w self-insert (male)) series. Accepting that yuri will be secondary to het. That is why Japan does not take yuri seriously.

Beside the pervy trainer it was a fun 2 episodes. Special and Suzuka easily the first one I ship. Yes I too want a show where the two moms are alive. Hopefully we get to see the human mom, since she seemed fun.
The winners got to perform on stage was interesting. Although they should’ve train Special some dance moves. I guess noone thought she’s gonna win. The last couple you mentioned is indeed a potential ship. I think they’ll have their own episode.

Currently he’s just a nuisance so not too bad.
One day we’ll get another anime like that. I’m sure of it.
I’m hoping for something along the lines of “How I met your mommy”
There’s definitely potential.

El cóndor pasa is a Peruvian song from the Andes and in our country we breed a special kind of horse called the “Peruvian Paso” which are famous worldwide because they’re trained for their 4-times waltz like gait (special type of way a horse gallops and moves) they’re used for performances. So I’m guessing that girl must be a Peruvian Paso horse!

Ah. Very cool trivia right there. She is currently one of the horses I want to know more about.

Fellow peruvian here! I doubt the horse is peruvian. The real racing horse is american, he was named “El condor pasa” due to his owner meeting someone who studied in Peru (around the time the horse was born). It’d be nice to have an anime series that features a Peruvian Paso.

Nice start to the spring season, wish the weather would finaly follow, I had fun, it is light, looks like no serious drama, so far so good. The trainer is probably not going to be a problem and I actualy like him as a character, somehow, he fits in there. But we will see if the writers are not going to mess with our nation yet again. But how the hell we get ourselves girls with horse power and speed? I am probably not crazy enough to come with something like that :).

Would have preferred a nice female trainer but we already have a mean female trainer so it is what it is.
It surprised me it took them this long to introduce horse girls. We already got female centaurs but only now did we get horse girls, unless Kemono Friends had a zebra.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Well, Centaurs are mythological creatuers, so no surprise there, but horse gilrs was a little.
As for the trainer, he is getting his but kicked almost all the time, so unless this changes, I am happy with that.

I am lovin this show already! A great start!
I love the designs of all the horse girls! Cant choose a favorite yet! They’re that good!
In my head Specials 2 Moms were an actual couple. Though the show just might show them having been just friends or something.
Her human mom seems to be amazing! I love her already from the limited time we have seen of her.
Once again you’ve picked a show ive liked. Keep up the good work my dude! 🙂

Where do I even begin?
I watched the first two episodes and will not continue watching this for a variety of reasons:
Too many characters, I guess that’s a give since this is from a mobile game. None of them seem particularly interesting.
They race to be part of a concert, that is so out of place it made me laugh so much
The plot of the first episode was so predictable
The male trainers destroys any change of Yuri (there might be some very light undertones but why bother?)
I highly doubt we will se anything more about the “two moms”
Bottom line I don’t think it’s interesting
I will still read the post here to see if it gets better

Male characters in shows do not mean there wont be yuri. There are plenty of yuri heavy shows with prominent male characters.

First, the coach isn’t a “pervert”. At least, I haven’t seen anything to that effect yet. What he was doing is perfectly normal, just normally it’d be done in a less out of nowhere way.
I like the trainer so far tbh. He doesn’t have to be abused, he gives good advice, and he is helping the SS ShizuSpe get afloat. He OBVIOUSLY planned to have Shizuka give her it from the start. That wasn’t the face he made when he realized he forgot to tell her how to dance, or how to handle the opening stage thing. that was a “oh geez, I can’t believe I’m so clumsy, guess you’ll just have to deliver it to her” face.
Really enjoyed the first two episodes! The racing is really intense, helps that the sound direction is really nice so far!
Look very much forward to more! Would talk more, but off to play family games, and only had so much time.

Still not a good introduction for the guy despite him having good intentions.
Other than that the show looks to be very promising.

A yuri fan defending a male self-insert? The absolute state of yuri and its fans. I guess we live in a timeline where Idolmaster is more yuri than Yuru Yuri.

He is definitely not a self insert, not with those looks.

The fact that you flat out said that you like the guy makes me question the mentality of yuri fans in this generation. We have so many yuri-friendly series like Yuru Camp, Slow Start, Yama no Susume, possibly Starlight Revue, and freaking Tachibanakan Triangle. And yet, there are “yuri fans” that dig for yuri in self-insert/harem shows, even either when the shows are not meant for them or when yuri and yuri fans get treated like trash.
This is just so disgusting on so many levels. A yuri fan who not only defends a self-insert (male), the one guy who serves as the anti-yuri poison, but flat out says that they like him. Facepalm.jpg

he’s not a self-insert, and I can accept the obviously ruined relationship between two girls just because they get together even when a male is around. Truly a tragic circumstance.

I didn’t like the way the coach was introduced. Hopefully that was just a one-off incident, because he didn’t seem entirely terrible after that.
I definitely enjoyed everything else about this show. I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for Special Week; particularly how her relationship with Suzuka grows.

Yup. As long as he’s kept on a leash it’s no big deal.
Special Suzu FTW!

Such a shame that this had to be another Idolmaster clone. That useless male trainer just makes me sick to my stomach. To be fair, I knew this will turn out into another CGDCT + >male self-insert and it happened. I am not looking forward for another Two Car. I am done with series like Idolmaster, Kancolle, and Uma Musume. As a yuri fan, I do not want series where yuri will always be secondary to het and self-insert. Why ship the girls together when at the end of the day, they are meant to be with the >male self-insert character?

One more thing: I wish Starlight Revue, an upcoming anime about girls and stage plays, does NOT join Uma Musume as an Idolmaster clone.

The first two episodes are fun. Have mixed feelings about the male trainer, but as long he doesn’t interfere in the said pairing, I think it will be fine, unless the next few episodes say otherwise. Still, it’s a promising start.

Protip: if there is a male self-insert existing, regardless of his relevance, just drop it. Stop trying to pretend or make a silly excuse for yourself that he is not important or does not exist. Do not get yourself baited like Hibikek, LWA, and Two Car did to you.

Ugh Hibike, sniff, you had to mention that 😦 but they got nice hair, so I’ll still watch, dropping series is free so I’ll risk it.

To clear up some confusion I’ve been noticing: the show specified that they’re named after real-life horses (to be specific “horses from another world” as in, they’re from our world), and their abilities stem from those horses.

Time to kick of the spring 2018 anime season (with snow on the ground). This is a mixed bag for me so far.
The Good:
– Characters with goofy names.
– Special Week’s misinterpreting of people’s intentions, including thinking the station employee was a pervert.
– The two moms. More scenes with them, please.
– Special Week running out the door with a carrot in her mouth.
– Early ship potential. I’m really hoping for a Gold Ship ship, just so I can talk about Gold Ship shipping.
– Winning racers immediately perform a concert.
The Bad:
– Too many characters for me to remember all the names. Give me a cast of four and I’ll remember them after a couple weeks. With larger casts I tend to lose track of everyone.
The Ugly:
– The pervert. I was sick of him by the first kick, and sadly that wasn’t the end of it. He also drags down anything he touches (ick). Twister training and Special Week being recruited in a bag were dragged down. I won’t bother repeating that line at the end.
The good is good, but the bad and ugly may kill this for me.

If I were you, I would drop this show. And no, that is a good friendly advice. That pervert is going to be really relevant. If you are a real yuri fan, drop this anime.

I believe it’s one time unintentional pervy gag. Episode 2 ans he is just doing her job with non of perv act. I’d say he is less center character than admiral of kancolle or producer of Cinderella girls (what is he again? prince who looks for idols). And pretty much girls are indifferent to him.

Is this the same Horse Anime I remember seeing announced back in 2016?

Yeah but sadly, if you are actually looking for yuri in this anime, forget it. There is annoying perverted trainer guy and really no yuri at all. This is Idolmaster meets MLP, so forget it.
Also, I hope you guys have no plans of picking up Hanebad just because the badminton players are women. There is a male coach and the manga has no yuri. It is Two Car with badminton.

Hmm reading the comments on pervert coach kinda discourages me BUT I did sit and watch Hibike even tho it was disappointing for me and I dropped it before the end, so why not, there will be so many titles I’ll drop in my life, I like horsey hair styles, they somehow resemble dogs a bit more, or is it me? lol, and two moms? I gotta watch it anyway!! We’ll see how it goes, thanks for covering the show

Up to you. I stopped letting “male interference” ramblings get to me after seeing how far some are willing to go to throw fits over it every time it happened. I have dropped some shows when they went too far but I don’t think this will be one of those shows. Again what you do is up to you.
I was never on the KumiRei badnwagon so what happened in S2 had no effect on me. Besides, I had my eyes focused on someone else worthy of Kumiko’s love and it ain’t that waste of flesh guy.

So you did not cover for every episode of Hibike because of that bait-and-switch-lesbian trope but you are covering this one even when it has that as well. This is very much yuribait like Hibike.
See, this is the issue with yuri fans like you for over a decade all the way to this time. You “yuri fans” love to eat scraps from series that see and use yuri as a marketing baiting tool. Yuri is accepted as long as it is just subtext. >”I have dropped some shows when they went too far but I don’t think this will be one of those shows” Oh freaking please. Yuri fans sure love jumping to the conclusion. We will see how this anime will treat yuri and yuri fans even with the presence of the dreaded male trainer. Oh wait, no respect whatsoever.

Now, for my thoughts, I really liked the premiere! It was fun and different and the yuri potential is there, no matter what others believe and despite the male trainer (who I’ll also admit to liking, sue me) being involved. The two moms was a super plus for me, as I’ve said it many times now, domesticated lesbian couples are my thing. Really great start and I’m looking for more. I will be watching every one of these episodes, bait or otherwise.

Considering most supposed “yuri” in anime and manga (except the Yuri genre, for obvious reasons) tends to be either just fanservice used to tease yuri fans without committing or people reading between the lines and seeing what’s not there (aka “Shipping Goggles”, as TV Tropes would call it), I usually do prefer something a bit more concrete before drawing conclusions.
I don’t really see this as a show that concerns itself with romantic stuff, anyway.

Two episodes at once, that surprised me. I thought I missed the first one or something. Anyway, Special Week’s really cute and I love her kicking the trainer. I do hope he’d stay on the sidelines. I really like the scene when Special was asked about what her goal was by Tokai Teio and then thought of Suzuka LOL. That could mean she wants to be as good as Suzuka or it could also mean that Suzuka’s her goal. I like to go for the latter one 😛 And Special’s human mom deserves an award in my opinion :D. All those hard trainings she gave to Special paid off in her debut and despite being the one badly hurt in those trainings she still didn’t give up. I hope we’ll see her again 😀
Overall, a really good start for this show and really excited for next week.
