351st G-View: Slow Start

I was instantly hyped for this show when it was first announced because it looked like a Girls Club show that was right up my alley. Let us find out if it became another Girls Club show worthy of aficionados’ time as we take a look at Slow Start.

Slow Start

Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Yuri

Themes: School Life, Moe

Number of Episodes: 12

G-Rating: 11/10

Plot Summary: Unbeknownst to her classmates, 16-year-old Hana Ichinose was a year late in enrolling into high school. Although it may not seem like a big deal, it is a big deal to her. She wants to catch up with everyone else someday.

Tama treating Hana ice cream

Tama, or as I dubbed her Tomato, serving Hana some ice cream.

Right off the bat I want to say that I am so glad episodes of Slow Start after ones of Citrus. Why? Because it balanced out Citrus’ heavy drama yuri with its lighthearted yuri that at times got pretty steamy but not raunchy. Basically this show was the perfect palette cleanser and it made me very, very happy every single episode. At its core it is another show about cute girls doing cute things and it was not ashamed of this in the slightest. At its core this is a show about a girl with poor social skills being afraid of socializing with fellow students due to her situation. I imagine that mainly people who can relate or experienced what Hana is going through can feel for her and understand why it is so difficult for her to tell her soon to be friends the truth…even though the audience quickly realize she has nothing to worry about. Again stand in her shoes to comprehend her personal pressure. Besides Hana the other girls, especially a certain college student introduced in the second quarter, also have their own personal struggles they must overcome such as separation anxiety and nervousness to share a hidden talent to name a few. Nothing spectacular but it does not have to be for a show like this. Grounded personal problems are more than enough to enjoy see how the girls find a way to solve them.

Eiko's personal hairpin

Smug Tomato is smug.

When not thinking about their personal problems the girls do what members of Girls Clubs do best, be adorable and fun to hang out with. The usual stuff can be expected such as eating sweets, talking about cute stuff, being happy go lucky and just enjoying life to the fullest. There is not much else to say regarding story content. On the surface it is a run of the mill Girls Club show but like every other great Girls Club show out there Slow Start features a wonderful cast of cuties to brighten everyone’s day. We will get to them in a bit.

The animation and soundtrack are solid. The girls are cute and sexy.

Update: Fans who are better at noticing animation quality than I am have rightfully pointed out the stellar fluidity of the characters in motion. A lot of detail went into their movement. I apologize for making light of the detail put into the animation.

The soundtrack along with the OP and ED are fun to listen to. Speaking of animation pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to the school statue whenever it pops up.

Now on the main four characters and the side-characters who stood out to me personally:

Exhausted Hana

Lead four from left to right: Eiko, Kamuri, Hana and Tomato.

First up we have lead girl Hana. She plays the role of “straight person” in the comedy quartet. Initially it looks like she stands out the least of the four but that is intentional and part of her character. She does not want to stand out but rather make friends. Of course being timid alongside her personal grievance and it will not be easy for her to lighten up. Thankfully her two friends and future wife help make every day fun and chillaxing.

Next is Kamuri or Kanna from Dragon Maid’s human counterpart. She has a bottomless stomach is soft spoken but tends to make fun and witty remarks. There is also the possibility she is even more timid than Hana. Again personal situation. Thankfully her childhood friend and love interest Eiko is always there to give her a helping hug. Also she is a “shortie” meaning she is older than she looks.

Third is Eiko the hunter/chick magnet. She has a natural born charisma that she MIGHT be unaware of. What I mean she easily attracts girls and women to her by being herself. She does not have to pretend or roleplay at all. Girls just naturally gravitate toward her. She builds a harem of her entire classroom (Not counting Hana and Tomato)…except for one woman…Whether Eiko is fully aware of her GOD given gift is unknown. I leave that to viewers to answer for themselves.

Lastly we have Best Girl Tomato. A genki yuri otaku who is always full of energy and the first to make friends. She also likes using yuri game/manga/anime similes and metaphors when wanting to get a point across, leading to her friends sometimes being unable to follow her. It can be anything from “leveling up” to dating sims or romance routes. Also look forward to the episode where her family is introduced. Let us just say Slow Start made anime history.

Shion's overwhelming magnificence

Hana and Hiroe thinking about Cousin Shion’s “assets”.

As for side-characters who stood out we have Shion, Hana’s cousin and lovable adult figure, Hiroe, a college student with a personal issue many current and former college students, myself included, can relate to and lastly Miss Enami, the gang’s homeroom teacher. All I will say is pay attention to Miss Enami whenever she pops up.

Tama comforting Hana

The yuri is everywhere in this show. Be it the Super Mega OTPs, Eiko’s harem (especially her top two love interests) and the side characters. Like I said, this show served as the perfect palette cleanser after watching Citrus during the Winter 2018 anime season.

Overall Slow Start may look like a straightforward Girls Club show at first glance but it quickly proves to be much more. The characters are adorable, the animation and soundtrack are solid, the character development is simple yet very effective and the yuri is much stronger than initially perceived. Highly recommended to Girls Club aficionados and yuri fans who want something lighthearted but also quite effective.

PS: The premiere episode can be “slow” for some. That was pretty much the point of the premiere but this is worth keeping in mind should readers choose to watch the show.

    Was a great show~
i’m not sure how to feel about it overall, as the whole Kamuri and teacher thing was kinda eh…I’m just not a fan of ntr almost all of the time. especially when one is left out cold. But it’s hard to see where things will go I guess.

But everything else, especially everything with best girl Tamate and Hana was ❤

Really nice to watch the characters grow! And everything Tama did was amazing. And of course, that fact about Tama’s family, quite the shocker, but 100% welcome.

I would have been 100% fine with it if someone was there for Kamuri. And, tbh, I started to see an interesting trend in the second half/last quarter. That being an OT3 with Hana, Tamate, and Kamuri. Those two were slowly freeing Kamuri from her Eiko dependence.

I really just think the problem is it needs a second season (if the author is going for that)

I really liked this series. At first I didn’t care for it, but as it went on it became one of my favorite anime of the season. It had great characters and great moments.

And there was a lot of good yuri moments as well. Most of them came from Enami x Eiko. I do like Eiko x Kamuri as a pairing, but looking back on it I think Eiko saw Kamuri more as a little sister. Her interactions with Enami on the other hand seemed much more like a crush.

It’s not too surprising that there was yuri. The mangaka who created the series has written a lot of yuri doujinshi (most of them for Saki) so they’re clearly a fan of the genre.

    Anyway, here’s hoping for a season 2.

I definitely found it enjoyable enough, and was pleased by the yuri being used as more than just bait, but I just don’t see myself caring about or remembering this even a season from now. Surprisingly good production value and some very fun moments but ultimately this just felt pretty forgettable.

This anime was great. The kind of really relaxed and really Yuri show that’s always enjoyable, kind of like Yuru Yuri.

About the last episode, the candy scene and dream scene were both amazing. I’m kind of sad that Hana didn’t actually tell the others her secret but it’s not a big deal. We all know they wouldn’t care about it and go on as usual.

      Precisely.

      Those were wonderful scenes.

I imagine that will happen near the end of the series. And yes it won’t be a big deal. I actually expect Tomato to give her a hug and kiss after telling them.

So much sweet and delicious and innocent yuri in this series. Drama free and happy yuri is just the sort I like.

The animation in this series was actually pretty amazing. The art was fairly average, but animation, especially in certain scenes, was incredible, with the characters MOVING so much. Lots of extra movement that you normally wouldn’t see in a show like this.

Anyway, this was a nice, sweet, fun series, and I definitely hope to see more. I need more Eiko x everyone!

It’s a good idea to have both happy and drama heavy yuri side by side as both have an audience. Not all of us in the Yuri Nation can embrace both unfortunately.

Very nice observation dood. Then again you are known for spotting those extra details whenever you drop by.

Oh yes. Eiko’s harem power is most commendable.

With Eiko and her Teacher, i don’t even know what’s going to happen when they are together. The suspense is too much when it is just them.

Season 2 when? Someone license the manga already!

Eiko is fully aware of what she is doing, and will add Hana’s mom to her harem once she gets a chance. The final boss remains undefeated at this moment.

I still suspect the gap year reveal will happen after a dramatic introduction by Hana, with Eiko, Kamu, and Tama going “oh” and Tama wondering what the big setup was supposed to be for.

Shion should have pushed a little more for the shark photo.

What can I say, it is a slow start…
    I see myself out.

Anyway, Season 2 When!? Need more Eiko x Sensei!

    And about that particular episode…
I remember replying to a blog post of how I want more adult yuri, but I don’t know if I am ready for an elder yuri, and then just a few days later in Slow Start…
Well, I suppose it is already here whether I am ready or not.

Good anime, better than I expected, and I want more of it.

  10. Such a wonderful, fluffily Yuri-filled show I didn’t know was going to be like this at the start of the season!

Personal super mega OTP probably goes to Shion x Hiroe tbh, especially with the festival scenes, and then the tiny blink-and-you-miss-it moment of them cuddling in the final post post-credit scene illustration, and also their interactions in general.

Also, so proud of Hiroe’s final big moment in the season! She succeeded! Hurray!

    Also Tomato’s family is amazing.

While I still don’t know how much I like Eiko x sensei, that candy scene in the last episode got me much more on board with them than previous ones. Eiko having had gap years and being older, or the story going on long enough that Eiko gets older would also get me more on board though, I guess.

Hopefully one day Hana will tell her friends. And then there will be even more snuggles with Tomato.

Young adult couple FTW without a doubt.

Hiroe’s character arcs was one of the strongest for sure.

Student X Teacher couples require extra concentration to fully appreciate. It is not for the softhearted. Besides, of course Miss Enami would wait for Eiko to finish high school before making the next move, should that be the direction the writer is heading. If not Kamuri works too. Either route is good.

      Indeed.

I felt EXACTLY how you did about the show! The constant warmth this show gave my heart and smiling through out the episodes. I absolutely love this Show! I was Constantly squeeling from the lethal doses of cuteness this show has! I nearly died watchin this show! But there are worse ways to go. 🙂

My favorite pairings were Hana x Tama and Shion x Hiroe.

“I got held back alot so im actually 20.” “We’re ants to Shion’s mountains” My favorite lines of the last episode.

This show and Colors are a great palette cleanser for me personally since i had recently got done watchin Devilman Crybaby. So so good but oh so soul destroying!

      Excellent choices.

Those were fantastic lines to end the show on.

Still gotta finish that one. Probably do a Yuri Quickie on it.

I was so glad to see that score. Some sites out there rate it lower than Citrus, but this show was the best yuri of the season and nobody will tell me otherwise.

Time to read the manga, a new chapter comes out every 3 days, and more Eiko x Sensei is waiting there. I do enjoy Kamuri being blatantly gay even if I don’t pair her with Eiko.

It’s certainly blessed us quite a bit. You know society craves heavy drama. Oh well. I go where my gut tells me, not to which shows are rated higher by the majority consensus.

      Enjoy.

This was a quality show and I loved it for its cuteness as well as the yuri. Kamuri was as sweet as her counterpart in Kana was, so I loved her and she was probably my favorite character. As far as her being paired with Eiko I have to agree with some others, that I see her as more of a little sister. So that is to say, I think they will always be together, but in terms of romance, I see Eiko and Sensei being more likely and so I’ll have to settle on them for a ship.

The otp is certainly Hana and Tama. All and all, it was a sweet and enjoyable show and I’d love a season 2 to expand on everything.

My best show of the season. It got everything. Cute, sexy, yuri, harem, you name it. For shipping part, Hana x Tama OTP. Hence Shion brought Tama gold and Tama silver from the river for Hana to pick. Eiko x everyone for me. With Kamuri and Sensei are #1 girlfriend. And I can’t choose team, I really can’t. Shion x Hiroe also cute together.

So yeah, it was a great show. I hope this will be like Gochiusa. A show this cute need more seasons.

  16. I love this show to bits. It became one of my all-time favourites around the time of Eiko’s little night adventure + Kamuri giving her a wedding ring. Thank you OG-Man for introducing it to us! I will definitely draw Tamate with Hana…

Like with most Manga Time Kirara shows, this show does not disappoint. The characters are very enjoyable and cute along with the pairings. You know, Hana and Tamate, Eiko and Kamuri/Enami.

But yes, time to read the 4th and 5th volume for more goodness.

…Wait, what? There was something about the statue? I didn’t pay close enough attention to it.

Anyway, Slow Start was standard as you said but it was enjoyable as expected of a Manga Time Kiraranime. The production values were top notch (must be that Aniplex money at work). One of the best parts was how fluid the animation was to me. It gave everyone a lot more life.

Eiko’s already a tough contender for Harem Queen this year. She’s just that good. However, Enami-sensei’s adult charms always threw her for a loop whenever she thought she had the upper hand. That was always a treat to watch.

Tama had some nice smug smirks but I liked Kamuri’s smug smiles better.

Yes. The school statue was a subtle highlight of the show.

So used to Girls Club shows being pretty that I made light of how much detail went into the animation. My bad.

Miss Enami remains Eiko’s greatest prey. Will she successfully seduce her one day? Who knows? It can happen.

Smug Kamuri was also quite smug, yes.

Oh God thank goodness I thought you totally weren’t gonna watch Slow Start cause you weren’t posting any episode reviews initially for like a good half of the series. I’m glad you finally have seen the light. Good OG-Man. That last episode where the teacher legit just took that candy out of her mouth and plopped it into Eiko’s like HOLY SHIT WHY DOESN’T THE TEACHER HAVE ANY FEELINGS

I had high expectations but in the end, this show did not meet my expectations. There’s no real progress and direction in the story and there’s too much yuri baiting. People have been talking about Eiko x Kamuri but this relationship lacks passion and is more like a big sister taking care of her small sister. Eiko x sensei has passion but goes nowhere. Was expecting Hana x Tama and Shion x Hannen to go somewhere but in the end it was just yuri baiting.
    Disappointing.
