348th G-View: Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san

The following anime is a case of a show whose entire plot is explained in the title, meaning the saddened were only saddened because they expected much more. Question now is whether the show is worth watching relying solely on the title as a plot description. Let us find out as we take a look at Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san.

Alternate Title: Miss Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles

Genres: Comedy

Themes: Cooking, Food, Ramen Noodles, Yuri

Number of Episodes: 12

G-Rating: 7/10 (personal) 6/10 (overall)

Plot Summary: Koizumi is a high school girl who looks like a cool beauty at first glance, but actually has an unexpected side of her that loves ramen.

Koizumi after eating a big bowl ramen

Koizumi-san after eating ramen.

Put simply the show is softcore food porn similar to the likes of Koufuku Graffiti, but not as hardcore as Shoukugeki no Soma, where the characters eat food erotically or get a joygasm while eating. Basically cute girls eating cute things erotically. That sounds like a fun time and for the most part it is. Why the low rating then? Because other than CGECTE there is, for the most part, little else to fully relish. Let me explain.

Koizumi-san educating Yuu

Expect to learn a lot about the different kinds of ramen when watching this show.

One could say the show would be appreciated more by food connoisseurs, especially ramen lovers who are interested in the fine detail that goes into as many kinds of ramen dishes as possible in the span of 3-4 sketches per episode. I would say 75% of the show is Koizumi-san visiting different ramen restaurants and relishing the dishes she orders with unhindered glee. This would not be an issue if the show were around 12 minutes per episode or so, like Takunomi. or Wakako-Zake. However, it is the regular 20+ minute runtime, meaning that viewers can expect it the show to feel repetitive. Again this is not a problem for viewers who love them some ramen or the sight of yummy food because it gets the job done in that regard (making people really hungry as they watch).

Yuu throwing a tantrum

Koizumi’s (not really) friends from Left to right: Misa, Yuu and Jun.

The repetitiveness does not become noticeable until near the third quarter of the show. Reason being because there is other stuff going on from time to time. That other stuff usually centers around the (not really) friends of Koizumi-san. First up is Jun who will not win many “best girl” awards but serves her role as the megane cutie well. Her “finding my path to the future” storyline can also be related to. The second (not really) friend is Misa who enjoys being the center of attention and is admittedly sexy enough to pull off the “look at me. I’m hot.” archetype. At first she is irked by Koizumi-san getting all the attention but like Jun they both find common ground with her through ramen and realize she is not too bad. There are other one-off and frequenting side-characters who are of varying entertainment, especially a certain foreign little cutie and a cousin. As for the deuteragonist of the story…we will get to her in a bit.

The animation looks pretty good. It has to be in a show where half of its appeal are the yummy dishes. The ladies look nice and most of them get to bless viewers with their beauty at some point. The soundtrack is fitting for the show while the OP is a personal favorite of the Winter 2018 season and the ED is also catchy.

Yuu still narrating

Koizumi-san and Yuu. The two main characters of the show.

While Koizumi-san is clearly the main character at first it did not seem that way. See, that spot was initially perceived as being Yuu’s. This leads us to the yuri of the show. Long story short Yuu falls madly in love with Koizumi-san at first sight to the point of following her wherever she goes. Basically a stalker. Yuu’s role is that of a lovesick puppy who wants nothing more than to be together with her self professed soul mate. Problem is her methods of getting closer to Koizumi-san…are not the most sound. There are times she comes up with great ideas but most of the time her quest ends in failure. On the bright side it is both commendable and fun seeing her never give up. The bright side is that despite Koizumi-san considering her a nuisance she does not outright hate her, brutally punish or humiliate her. She often lets Yuu tag along to prevent her from being a bigger nuisance. Her (not really) other friends give her less of a difficult time. Another noteworthy trait of Yuu’s love for Koizumi-san is…let me put it this way, it serves as preparation for shows starring…the obsessed. It will be made clear when viewers see “that side” of Yuu. Funny thing is the only reason I personally give the show a 7 is mainly because of Yuu. Otherwise it would be a 6. Also there is additional side-yuri from a certain attention seeker.

Overall Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san is an okay semi Girls Club show. Viewers will learn a lot about ramen and be drooling over the tasty dishes and the main cast is neat with a few side-characters who stand out. However, viewers need keep in mind that as the title of the show suggests 75% of it is about Koizumi-san eating and talking about ramen. The other 25% is entertaining but I do not know if it is enough to please everyone. Still worth checking at least once if only to see the delight that is Yuu’s mad quest for love.

Should have just let Yuu go unhindered yandere.

I couldn’t see Yuu’s attempts as “enjoyable” when I learned the extent of how mentally disturbed she actually is. Koizumi will die. that’s the only end for someone like Yuu being interested in her. Barring someone else being able to break her out of that. Cause as much as Koizumi puts up with Yuu, I doubt she’d be okay if she learned that she was part of a cut and paste poster board.

I can’t really figure out whether the studio was trying to make it a “joke” or not, but I couldn’t take it as one.

Moving on, I actually like food quite a bit…but in the end, it was just showing off “ramen shops”, meaning until the day I can visit Japan, there’s no chance of me experiencing all that stuff anyway. And that reality made the show less enjoyable as well.

    I personally loved this show.

The op and ed are my favorite of the season.

And Yuu is definitely best girl of the show. I absolutely love her! And “that” side of her was really enjoyable. Very fun.

And that the mini skit of little 5 year old Yuu was really cute in episode 11. She was adorable!

And Her reaction to Koizumi’s first text was hilarious! Can’t keep my girl down!

    Now i’m sad its done.

Yes, the show was mainly about ramen. So, many, delicious, ramen. It is kinda repetitive but Yuu made the show more enjoyable. And yandere Yuu, well, we’ll get a real yandere show later, so there’s nothing wrong about funny yandere. At least she’s never hurt Koizumi-san. She loves Koizumi-san just like Koizumi-san loves ramen. They’re perfect for each other. Now Yuu just has to learn how to make gajillion ramen and Koizumi-san will be hers forever.

Exactly. Yuu has what it takes to win over Koizumi-san. She just needs to apply proper techniques (such as cooking for her forever) and not rely on her old tactics as much in the near future.
Some would hope Misa could eventually win Yuu over but that remains to be seen. Whatever ends up happening let’s wish Yuu the best of luck.

In the first episode, I decided to treat this as a story written by Rin from Love Live!. It started out as an amusing interpretation, but watching Yuu’s slow decent into madness gave that little idea a weird twist.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see Yuu kill anyone, although her brother barely made it through that one scene.

Misa was amusing, and deserves heaps of attention thrown on her. Jun wasn’t bad, but she tended to not be the focal point of any group scenes. She’d be better off with less insane characters.

That’s one way of looking at the show.

It’s for the best she didn’t.

      That she does.

Jun will be a great contributor to society one day.

  7. Probably a show that would be especially enjoyed by someone interested in ramen and also actually able to go to all the ramen shops they go to in Japan (as I think most of them are real places/actually exist as I understand?)

Yuu was interesting, certainly. Also, the final episode did show that Yuu does honestly care for Koizumi in a more “normal” way as well, and does actually give her a little space when she sees Koizumi needs it…so it could even work out. Eventually.

Also, my personal favorite character goes to Yuu’s cousin. Kansai-ben + older female character + Ueda Kana = ❤

I’m torn on this show, On one hand, I LOVE the “informational” animes like Yuru Camp, where you learn things about a subject while the story goes on. On the other hand, I cannot stand Koizumi, and it’s the same problem I have with Mei in Citrus. Both characters are extremely self-centered and narcissistic, to the point of being assholes to everyone around them unless they take a very specific interest.
I wouldn’t mind Koizumi as much if she was a likeable character with a ramen fetish, and I can even overlook her not having feelings for Yuu, that is fine, but her whole demeanor is so self-centered, that if someone is not talking about ramen, your lower than shit to her. Her type of character really irks me, and if it wasn’t for that, if she actually had a decent, even slightly standoffish, personality, I would have really liked this show, but Koizumi just poisoned it for me.

Koizumi-san just wants to be left alone really. Her not really wanting to hang out with anyone isn’t too bad. As long as she isn’t downright anti-social to important people like teachers and stuff it’s not too bad. Mei is a different story altogether.

Having said that it’s cool that you don’t like these kinds of characters. Wouldn’t want to meet one of them in real life. Then again I would take the hint and leave them be.

Koizumi is loner, indifferent to people, self serving, blunt. But she is never rude or being an asshole. She help lost kid and even treat Yuu ramen and will lend her money for train home.

Also as mihomaho said it’s not like she’s a jerk. She DOES have a kind side to her. Again she just prefers being left alone and expresses her thoughts in a blunt manner. There’s a difference between being blunt and being a jerk.

This show made me crave for ramen so many times 😛
Yuu’s actually on the verge of being a yandere already because of her obsession. Well I think as long as nobody really makes a move on Koizumi-san that won’t happen…hopefully 😀 Anyway, there’s also the fact that Koizumi got more involved with Yuu’s family towards the end by coincidence…litereally despite her avoiding Yuu all the time. Now does that mean she might end up being part of it someday…I don’t know…but I hope LOL 😀

I really can’t recommend this show at all whether for yuri fans or for non-yuri fans unless you are into food porn. . Koizumi is so self-centred and self-absorbed that anyone who isn’t into ramen in her eyes is lower than pond scum. She has no defining characteristic and character development except for the fact she likes ramen. This show was seriously a waste of my time.
